Great progress so far. Some day I will be pulling my motor for a rebuild (depending on how the oil consumption gets. Will be following your progress :like

Removed the Oil Filter Housing, oil dipstick tube, and two remaining hard coolant lines. Those are hard plastic and cracked off inside the block when I removed them. Also removed the knock sensors. I think I was leaking a little oil from the Filter Housing lol

Also removed the water pump. The only thing left is the thermostat housing. Can't remove that yet because one of the bolts holding the housing on also holds the lift point for the housing. I'm going to have to get creative.

I also finished draining the coolant from the block, and I drained the oil.
That's all the progress for right now. All in all it's going pretty smooth, and I'm having fun!

Tried taking the exhaust manifolds off and now have a couple nuts that are rounded off. Looks like a trip to get some grip right sockets is in order next week. The nuts were so corroded that I was pulling out some studs with the nuts seized to the studs

It's normal for the studs to come out with the nuts. Just replace them all with new when rebuilding...

Having trouble getting the 22mm bolt off that holds on the harmonic balancer.
Just ordered the new block, and will be ordering all the other parts soon. I'm going to be replacing the piston heads but I'm waiting to find out if I'll need standard or oversized pistons.
Things are coming along and I'm having a lot of fun!

Did you get the bolt out of the harmonic balancer?
Not yet. I'm thinking I may reinstall the flywheel and put the locking pin in and use a breaker bar. My impact didn't budge it one bit.Quote:

Sprayed with liquid wrench and let it soak while I disassembled the head. Then I hit it with the impact. Didn't work so I sprayed again and then hit it again. Alternated like that for a couple minutes and then it finally broke free!

The plastic on the timing chain guide and timing chain tensioner is so brittle there is no way to get them off without breaking the little clips dang it.

Looks like fun! If that plastic tensioner and guide didn't break I would of been surprised :) Some day, my engine is going to go and I'll be doing the same thing Great to watch your progress...
I'm really enjoying doing this. The experience is really making me love the car even more, plus in the end I'll have the satisfaction that I did it, and I'll know exactly how it was done and what parts were used. Hell after this I'll know how to fix almost anything on these cars, and that's a great feeling. Who needs mechanics when ya can do it yourself. Definitely cheaper lolQuote:

This is the kit I'm getting off eBay. You just tell them if you need standard or over sized position heads, and what color main bearings you need when you order it. The only thing you have to order separate are the connecting rod bolts.

The block will be here tomorrow :) then it will be off to the machine shop with it and the head. I'm probably going to have my valve seats and valves ground while it's there. The new piston heads and old rods will be balanced and so will the crankshaft.

Are you going to have them deck the block and head?
Just honing the cylinders will not put them back to round and untapered.

I'm going to have them look at everything but the head isn't warped so it won't need decked. The cylinders look like they are in great shape. Better than my old block. I'm going to have them check the cylinders and if they are within specs they will just need honed and not bored. I may just have them bore the cylinders .5mm bigger to be safe and go with oversized pistons but we will see what they say when I take the block to them.Quote:

Just pulled the block out of the box. Not too happy.
The top of the block along the front has been damaged. Almost beveled all the way across with a nice chunk out of it.

I'm hoping the machine shop can fix that by just resurfacing it.
Also one of the bottom bolt holes on the back that the bell housing bolts up to block has a bent guide.

In the process of returning the block. I found even more damage. It is definitely not in good working order with great cylinders.
