Hey folks!

My son Ian and I were on our way to a Cars and Coffee meeting this past Saturday in Williamsburg when, by chance, we looked over and saw this gathering of beautiful bimmers. We, being in our newly acquired E46, decided to head over and check out the gathering. There, we met some of the friendliest, most helpful folks ever, the ZHP Mafia. It was a pleasure talking with you guys and we look forward to being part of the Forum.

Ian and I are track rats. We love cars but we LOVE being on the track. Ian started racing karts at 11 or so and has won a few league championships. He even teamed up with Tony Stewart for an endure once.

Ian and I have raced (separately and together) in the ChumpCar Series. I had the great luck of being a member of the winning team of the inaugural 24 Hours of VIR in a 1990 Jetta (believe it or not).

We have also raced an RX7 and most recently and awesome little E30. With ChumpCar we have been on some really fun tracks for some great wheel-to-wheel competition.

As for our daily drivers, we had an incredibly fun 1998 E36 M3. We tracked it regularly.

We parted with the E36 this past Feb. and have just replaced it with an ILB E46 M3 ZCP. I drove it to Williamsburg from its previous owner in Portland, OR just last week. There's no better way to get familiar with a car than a 3,000 mile ride home.8514

We look forward to being a part of the Mafia.

Tommy and Ian

Welcome to the group and great meeting you. Perhaps my favorite E46///M is the one you now own. Beautiful car, even more amazing color combo.

Enjoy the new car and looking forward to more posts of that amazing machine!

Gentlemen, welcome to the mafia! Great story, and I am loving the photos from Oak Tree corner @ VIR...one of my most favorite places on earth! And you even have them taken with the proper Boston Green shade of M3/4/5! Have you determined whether you prefer second or third coming out of that corner yet? :biggrin

Congrats on the newer M. Hope that she treats you well, and you are able to take her to the track on occasion. Any HPDE events planned for the season?

Thank you everyone!

Brett, we will be at VIR this Thursday for some charity laps. No quite a DE yet but we have some money to spend (track tire/wheel combo), and some time to invest to go over the current setup to make sure it (and we) will be fine. Chin, NARRA and NASA all have dates in July at VIR. Chin is at Road Atlanta in late June as well - not sure which ones(s) we will do (if any yet). I also have ChumpCar 24 Hours of VIR in the E30 - gotta spread the love out a little. ;-)

Enjoy VIR this week for me! I missed getting there last season, but I hope to be able to make it down this year. Understood on the cost of getting ready & going to the track - it is not a cheap thrill, that is for sure. Perhaps sometime in July/August/September I will be able to make my annual pilgrimage down there. It's been too long. Haha, I bet that ChumpCar 24 there would be a ball, and having driven an E30 at VIR, I bet you are having a lot of fun with it. Please post some photos of your visits for us all to enjoy.

What an incredibly fun car!!! We lost the car in an accident this past February. The short version involves a rural road near here, a deer, an embankment, a tree, a well-built German car, some firemen and a very luck 18 year old.8516

Wow, glad to hear all is ok. More and more I hear of pretty serious accidents and people walking away, due to the structural integrity of BMWs. Really makes me glad my girls ride in only BMWs.

Welcome Tommy. That was crazy to hear about your son. I'm so glad for you guys that everything turned out ok. I'm sure you'll learn a lot about your car here and be a great addition to the mafia. It does however sound like you have tons more track time than most here. Maybe you can give some pointers here and there. I know Ryan wouldn't be opposed!!

Holy cow on that accident. I'm glad everyone (excluding the deer) made it safe. You said you tracked the car often, were there a reinforced roll bar cage in the car? I know some people that eliminate even air bags and such. Either way, glad you're still with us.

I know some people that eliminate even air bags and such. Either way, glad you're still with us. We did not have a cage in the green M3 - we ran it in DE's (not races or time trials) with NASA, TrackDaze, Chin, and NARRA and would pack up our tent, spares and everything else in the trunk and backseat and drive it home when we were done and the next day drive it to work/school - It was factory engineering, luck and some divine intervention that kept the driver safe in this crash.

Depends how you define 'SPECIAL'. Compared to a stock 330 it's special. To an M3 not that special. Compared to a Hundai very special

Amazing accident story. Luck was on your side. I think I'll 'back off' for awhile. With a story like that I think the mods can bypass the mandotory ZHP Mafia membership underwear check

Man, what is it with "Dem Dare Deer" and Boston Green?! :eeps This is an old pic of my 318ti...after a deer came by for a visit, though the car was repaired and is still my DD. Sorry that your E36 M was not as lucky, but thrilled that the driver was ok!

Ti ouch!
