Pics of completed work below. Planned list is as follows.
1. New rims-BBS CH or Forgestar F-14's.
2. KW V2's.
3. One panel needs reupholstered on rear seat.
My story goes like this. Its not a story of luck...or love.....but a story of determination. Determination to save an Imola Red ZHP from a life of abuse, and neglect. When I initially started looking....I was looking for a 330i manual. I had found one in New Jersey, and one in Arlington, VA....and had about 8 or so others that I was going to look at....but they all ended up sold.
So....the one in New Jersey was an AW 330i ZHP with cinnamon interior. Truly stunning car with 78k miles....but I didn't want to make the drive....and was keeping that one in my hip pocket.
So....I ended up at a place in Arlington, VA. They had a 330Ci.....and I told them exactly what I was looking for...and they said they would find me my car in 30 days...and to take the Black 330Ci. I paid $15k and was out the door, with what I thought was a pretty sweet car....
This is the black one (while I was in Manassas...seeing friends on my way home from the purchase)

This was it about 4 hours later...hehe

Fast forward to day 18 with the black 330Ci. Dealership not getting back to me at all....I kept calling and they said....that "we are still looking". Mmmmph! I was getting worried. So....a couple of days pass and I see this imola 330i show up on their lot....and its a zhp. Initial deal was for $15k (They told me I could bring back the black one and I could do a direct swap...for $15k)....they lied...and told me I would need $19.8k to get the ZHP....and I ended up settling on $17.2k due to availability and I just really wanted the car. Obviously getting the car up to snuff...is not something I would shy from.
The car did not have style 135's....swirl marks were evident, stain on the drivers seat, passenger side mirror was black, someone had glued something to the roof...that had been removed, drivers side mirror was rusty, Passenger side foglight was cracked, and I got an SES light 100 miles outside of Arlington (how convenient). I replaced the battery 2 days after purchase, along with DISA, and upper and lower intake boots. I immediately did an oil, diff, tranny fluid swap. Over the past 6 months....I have done all of the below. I feel as though I have nursed it back to health with my love for these cars and my superb attention to detail. I have also learned how to properly detail the car, and have purchased the necessary Porter Cable and pads. Front bumper had a little bit of damage going on.....and that's why you will see I have painted the lower portion of it black. I actually kind of like i that way.....and since its a DD...I don't need to worry about rock chips and what not.
Current issues that need addressed...are: Passenger side front wheel well is a lil messed up (no biggie), Needs sunshade pull (no biggie), need new pre-cat O2 sensors, and I think I will need new FCA's soon. Other than some modest wear (It has 116k miles on it) the car is flawless.
Now please join me on this journey through time.....with a car being resurrected.

Then came the body work to bring the car back to 100% condition. Respray roof, Hood (couple of small dings repaired), rear passenger door (I swear I think a deer ran into, based off geometry of dent), and rear bumper (where previous owner had "bumped" another car as evidenced by "circles" from license plate bolts).
I paid $975 for roof/hood respray. Front and rear bumper respray with some small ding removal, and he pulled the dent outta the rear passenger side door. Is it perfect? No. Is it better than what it was? Yes. I still plan to have him re-shoot hood on Friday. There is one small fisheye on the roof, I would like to see him correct as well. He did the front bumper for free. The guy was trying to help me out...and I rushed him, as I needed the car back on Monday. He did what he did from Friday night.....to Monday morning. He needed the work as well. He guarantee's his work for as long as I own the vehicle....which is more than I can say for most body shops.

I too am slowly nursing my ZHP back to health. The paint right now is the worst part. In some spots the clear coat is so dull that it looks like someone took sand paper to it. I think I'll take the plunge and get a full 3 step paint correction detail this Spring. She still needs a little work (front and rear bumpers mainly) but coming along nicely.

Different textures/finishes. It kinda shows off her work. IDK....I appreciate the offer though.....just gonna roll like this until I can't stand it...then I may hit you up.

Missed the update on the fairing over here.
What length did you end up getting?
IIRC the Thule fit guide says there are two sizes that work for our cars.
Or did you measure across instead of using the fit guide?
danewilson77
03-18-2011, 03:22 AM
I could have gone 32" or 38". 38" extends to the inner edge of the roof channels. IMHO, that looks like waht I had......and when I measured, 32" looked like a tophat (too small). A 32" would have sat about 3-4" inside the roof channels...
billschusteriv
03-18-2011, 03:39 AM
Cool. I followed the Thule fitment guide, which said 44" - and was way way too big.
I ended going with the 38" also - which sits inside of my factory rails.

There you go....whew. I was looking for confirmation on that.

Dane - I was wrong. My memory is shot.
I am rocking the 32". But its only so I can fit it in between the rails behind my sunroof. This is based on placement of my car top carrier. Pic to follow.
I also bought the 38" - it fits in front of your roof rails and sunroof; which is where you want to put yours (I think).
The Thule fit guide say 38" and 44" fits - but after seeing the 38 - 44 is too big IMO.
danewilson77
03-18-2011, 04:48 AM

Nope. Do what you want.
My thing is.......I sanded it.....three coats of black, and a coat of clear. That was a few months ago. It's already jacked....so....imho.....spending money to paint this bumper (the right way)....with all the driving I do is a waste of money. I will in the future. I consider it a replaceable wear surface at this point in its life.

http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af278/nicee46/Imola%20Bimmer/ext43_oops-vi.jpg
Directions for later....
a) Refinishing:
• Remove the damaged wheel from vehicle.
• Clean the damaged area with PrepSol and then sand the scratched or damaged area with Norton 3X Sandpaper (p-graded aluminium oxide grain,) 60, 80 or 100 grit sand paper, sand wet or dry with a wooden sanding block.
• Use a tack rag and wipe the area, using a light pressure
• Fill any minor indentations with Bondo Lightweight Filler 264 and Red Cream Hardener, allowing approx 30 minutes before you shape / sand
• Sand the wheels until you've removed the scratches, `kerbing' marks and/or smoothed the Bondo filler.
• Continue the sanding process using finer and finer grades of UniGrit paper, 220 or 320 grit and finally with 500-grit paper.
• For small hard to reach places use a Dremel Tool and a suitable sanding bit
Note- If the above cleaning method don’t finish to wheels to your liking have them bead blasted
Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, VW, and most other European OEMs use a cast aluminium alloy wheels. They're usually painted silver and have a clear coated finish.
b) Repainting (cast aluminium ) Wheel Surface• Prepare the surface by removing all sandpaper residues with a tack rag, wash surface and then dry thoroughly. .
• Use 3M Painters Masking Tape between the tyre and the wheel rim (or use Vaseline to mask the tyre from paint overspray)
• Wipe-down the wheels with DuPont Prep Sol and allow to air dry.
• Apply a thin coat of 1z 'Haft-Grund' Self-etching Primer to stabilize and provide an etched surface.
• Use at temperatures between 70 – 90.oF degrees Fahrenheit (.Do not use this paint in damp conditions)
• Shake the can well for at least a full minute
• Push the spray nozzle as you sweep across and release at the end.
• Spray on, spray off. Spray on, spray off; apply as a very fine / thin coat.
• Paint the wheels with two thin coats of silver alloy paint (Wurth German Alloy Silver Wheel) to ensure complete coverage
• Allow air-drying; 1-2 hours between coats and then lightly sand finish, then leave to cure overnight.
• Finish with a clear lacquer paint (Wurth European Blend Lacquers) apply two or three thin coats of clear with about 20-30 minutes of drying time between coats to seal the silver metallic paint and add depth and gloss
• A allow clear coat to air-dry and then cure for 4-6 ours
• Apply a sealant for protection
• If your axle/ wheel centres (hats) are cast iron, you may want to consider painting the hat area with some hi-temp black engine paint

My leather wheel looked fine.....but I had a wheelskinz in the TiAg, and installed it, more to keep what looks good looking good, more than anything. I love the way they look and make the ///M3 wheel even gurthier. I went with the euor-perf option and had to call in my measurements just as a heads up...though...with a 323..you can prolly just handle through the site. Unless you have an ///M3 wheel.

He doesn't have splitters. The bottom part of his bumper is just painted that way. Makes it look like he has splitters though, which is really cool.

I was just doing some TireRack "what if" scenarios last night myself. Very interested to hear what you think of the DWSs.
I've got two sets of Style 135s now, so I've been kicking around going to a square setup on the new car. Which opens up a whole can of worms - all fronts? all rears? Tire size? Summer or A/S? I've also got a set of brand new 17" Beyern CSL reps with all season Kumhos I could run for winter, assuming they fit over the bigger brakes on the ZHP. Too much to think about. Might go work on my taxes - that's simpler.
Friday appointment at 0900 for install and alignment.

They mounted, and balanced everything and did the alignment. Went to pull my red card out, and he told me to put it away. They quoted me $196.00. ;o)

A shop about 2 years ago ran them over and damaged one. They wouldn't buy me a new one and wouldn't fix it properly, so three spokes have been painted silver.

Dane, where'd you source the piano black kidneys? I've been looking at either Piano Black, or Imola painted frames for mine.

Everything I hoped they would be! Was the removal easy? Those pieces in the interior are always a pain to remove.

Pain in the ass somewhat. They are just rivets that pop into holes for the fronts. On the rears......you pop the aft most rivet, then pull the trim piece toward the rear of the vehicle.
I got all four of those pieces in 9.9/10 condition, shipped for.........................

Dane's Imola ZHP sets the standard for the rest of us :thumbsup

Nope. I appreciate the comment, but there are many nicer examples of the ZHP on this forum and other places.
My car is getting pretty beat up at >180K miles.
I'm just trying to stay caught up on aesthetics, and maintenance (preventative and corrective) which as you know, takes quite a bit of time.
I appreciate the kind words fella's.

I think Dane does set the bar for what any of our cars should look like after 180k.
