I just purchased a UltraGauge for the ZHP. I was looking to add a Digital Coolant Temp gauge that would give a more accurate reading. When I found the UltraGauge I knew it exactly what I was looking for. This thing reads and clears engine codes, resets the "Check Engine" light, can monitor several parameters via the OBDII port. You can set alarms for the parameters being monitored which is really nice! If the engine coolant temp gets too high a beep sounds and the screen flashes. Very impressed with the quality and features with a unit that costs $70.

Fuel Mileage
UltraGauge continually calculates real-time Miles Per Gallon as you drive. UltraGauge displays real-time and average MPG to help adjust driving habits for maximum savings.
With Real-time MPG, UltraGauge can quickly answer those age-old fuel efficiency questions specifically for your vehicle:
Is it better to drive with the windows down or use the air-conditioner?
Tailgate up or Down?
Do truck tailgate & bed accessories help MPG?
Is MPG significantly affected by tire inflation?
Which gear is best when climbing grades?
Which speed delivers optimal MPG?
Does engine braking use more fuel?
Does MPG change based on altitude?
Although dangerous, does drafting really help?
and many more....
With UltraGauge it’s instant and easy!
Unlike MPG gauges found in high-end vehicles, UltraGauge is not limited to displaying a maximum of 99 MPG, UltraGauge displays up to 999 MPG.
Alarms
UltraGauge features fully configurable alarms for every gauge. Both low and high alarms may be set and the trigger value of each alarm is completely configurable.
UltraGauge continually compares real-time gauge values against configured alarm values. If the alarm thresholds have been exceeded, an audio and visual alarm will occur. The alarm window will display the set value and the current value. While the alarm is occurring, the particular alarm may be easily suspended and will no longer trigger for the remainder of the current driving cycle.
The alarm siren may also be disabled to provide only visual alarms. Alarms may also be globally disabled so that both visual and audible alarms are disabled.
An alarm may also be assigned to trouble codes or pending codes. Should a trouble code or pending code become posted while driving, an alarm immediately occurs. This can aid in the diagnosis of intermittent problems.

It looks cool and price is certainly right. I'll have to check that out when you're in LA.
That kind of thing is why I keep thinking about the Android based NAV units so I could run the torque app

I suppose either OBD II doesn't offer that info? Still this would display coolant temp and voltage, two of the items a traditional gauge set would show. This could be an alternative to Coolant Snitch, or combine this with the LeatherZ gauge package. The intake air temp would be interesting--could use that to see if the aFe air scoops lower air temp. The MAF output could be used to show how much extra airflow from a BMW or aFe intake vs. stock.

I do believe the difference is year dependent. Earlier OBDII models can only give certain parameters. I have the Edge Insight CTS on my 2008 Duramax and it will display Oil Temp and Pressure. I was wanting to get one for the BMW but it's size was an issue. The only place to mount it is up on the dash with a suction cup windshield mount.

UltraGauge supports the gauges described here:
http://www.ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/TEN/gauges.htm (http://www.ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/TEN/gauges.htm)
However, the actual gauges available to UltraGauge is vehicle dependent. The available gauges vary based on Year, Make, Model, Engine Size and sometimes even based on the transmission. For example, a 2004 Ford Mustang with a V6 may support different gauges than a 2004 Ford Mustang with a V8. Unfortunately there is no way to know which gauges are truly supported without physically attaching UltraGauge and discovering the available gauges. However, Gauges such as MPH, RPM, Intake Air Temperature, Coolant Temperature, distance gauges, Run Time Gauges, and Mileage gauges are commonly supported.
In an effort to help alleviate this issue, we have provided a Vehicle Gauge Availability Estimator. Please read the important information contained on the estimator page before use. The estimator can be found here:
http://ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/support/gaugelookup.php (http://ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/support/gaugelookup.php)

Seems to be a nice unit - gonna read up some more...
One big advantage of the competitor "scan guage II" vs the UG that I noticed is the size of the SG II is very slim, and the display color can be changed to match any car's dash illumination (a whopping 63 different colors!)
...if UG had THAT feature, for the price it will be a HUGE winner...
SG II is a lot more expensive though...

Ageed. There are two different ScanGauge's available, one is $100 and the other is $170. Reading up on them they are more geared towards fuel mileage efficiency. They do not monitor nearly as many parameters. Click on the Cooling Fan & OBDII Monitor in my sig for more info.

I got it from a buddy of mine that is a stage hand. They have several different shades of Orange and Red. I had to use two Orange sheets as one just wasn't dark enough. Red might be perfect. I have plenty of the Orange left I could send it to ya. Or get some Red.
I used a business card cut down to size as a template. Then tapped the card to the colored sheet and cut it out approx 1/8" larger all the way around.

Gary: can you give some more details on exactly how you mounted yours in front of the shifter?
Thanks!
- Remove the shift knob.
( Put the gear selector in Neutral, car off E brake on. Grab the knob and yank up REALLY hard. Don't break the Sunroof ).
- Remove the shift boot.
- Remove the console piece, bezel I suppose?
- Flip over the bezel and approx 1" from the corner I used a rasp file (round) and filed a grove large enough for the cable.
( When you do this file down away from the top otherwise it catches the aluminum trim. Make sure it's where you want it. On mine the grove is just to the left of the long plastic inner edge. I also had to slightly file the face of the ashtray lip, it's under the bezel out of sight).
- Route the cable with the plug end down thru the side of the center console. This is tricky because the plug is huge, I used a small pry bar to help get it thru.
- Route it up underneath the dash and use a drill or the round file and cut a grove in the cover close to the OBDII port.

Ya he gave me R22 last time (orange) and this one is R25 (red). The Red one is also a tad thicker so it doesn't bind up easy when trying to slip it under the edges. The sheet he gave me was used so it has a few blemishes on it. There is enough on one sheet to do about 8 screens. I will try and get a new one from him.
Just let me know who needs some R25 (red) and I will mail it out for Free!

Obviously this is not a GROUP BUY thread, however I am sincerely interested in this product, and it seems like others are as well. I went to UG's website and found this here: http://www.ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/support/FAQ.htm
Group buy Discounts?
Although UltraGauge is offered to the public at wholesale pricing, we do offer volume discounts primarily for automotive forum group buys.
Discounts are offered for group purchases of 50 & 100+. All previous forum group buys have easily exceeded 150 units.
It does require that a member of the forum take the responsibility to gauge preliminary interest, and then manage the overall group buy at the forum end. Note that all shipments are sent to the individual forum members and not as one large shipment.
If you are interested in managing a group buy for your forum and would like to learn more, please create a support ticket and request more information: Support Ticket
I mean - it's a relatively inexpensive unit, however if enough members were interested, this could potentially work.
Just providing the information in case anyone wanted to orchestrate something of this nature down the road.

I have it set at 210, it's a tad low but I prefer a early warning rather than almost too late. The operating range of our cars is approx 88-96 Celcius or 190-205 Fahrenheit.

I purchased the windshield mount and was intending on mounting it above the left vent. It's perfectly visible there and the length is good but I didn't like the look. You can really see the suction cup from the outside and it clutters up the clean dash. So I tried to find a area to use the velcro mount. There is two areas on the dash trim to the left and right of the steering wheel that would work. The only problem is the steering wheel blocks the view, you have to lean to the side to see it. Also to access the 3 buttons on the back you would have to remove it. You could 3M tape it to the dash and as long as the tape isn't too thick the buttons would work by pressing on the front corners of the unit. I can do this where mine sits on the ash tray, tricky but it does work. I thought about using the standard swivel mount and screwing it to the homelink cover but routing the cable would be a bitch because of the large OBII plug on the end.

So the air frame and the UG will be both in a horizontal position, right? The UG cable is connected sideways, but I think the AF should still be able to grip it without the cable being in the way...
or are we thinking of using the AF in vertical position, gripping the UG from top and bottom and not from the sides?
would LOVE to see some pics (esp. how much the AF and UG will block the vent) if someone installs the UG with the AF -
I hate blocking a vent, but it looks like very little of the vent is blocked by the AF/UG...

Glad your happy with the color, tried to match it a close as possible. It took me a few days to get comfortable with the Ultra Gauge, once you do it's pretty easy. Don't forget to set the alarms. BTW do not set a low fuel alarm! It will beep every minute and drive you nuts! The coolant alarm was the main reason I bought this unit. I have mine set to 210 degrees. Let me know what temp your car runs at on the freeway, curious if its the same or not. I get 192.2 degrees.
What camera did you use to take that photo?
I have you beat on the work time, I'm clocking in at 4:50am, up at 3:30! It Sucks!

Man that is early!!
I just used the camera on my phone and turned the exposure up in order to get the lights to show up. Color is spot on! Is it still pretty visible during the day with the colored film over it? Seems to have brought the brightness down some at night. Which I'm not complaining at all due to at stock its a little too bright for my tastes driving at night.
For some reason my car is continuing to throw a P1620 code. Which I believe has to do with the thermostat but it has always stayed rock solid in the middle since I replaced it last year or so. I had to disable pending and fault code alarms for that reason. I haven't decided on the coolant alarm yet but will do so tomorrow morning after my drive to work. Also noticed it doesn't seem to be able to detect my fuel level so I have to manually put in when I fill up. Other than that I am very happy with this little rig.

The UG doesn't detect the fuel level, bummer. Basically you tell the UG what size tank you have (which is I believe 16.6) then when you fill up just enter that under the fuel management as a "Full fill up" and it will adjust.
Have you checked your speedometer compared to the UG yet? For some reason the UG isn't even close to what my speedometer reads.

Got my Ultragauge yesterday and installed it today. I went with the windshield suction cup and arm mount. The arm is actually quite stiff so you can't bend it while the suction cup is attached. Its more like bend, hold up to windshield, figure out the next bend you need, take down, bend some more, etc.
Now I just gotta spend some time with the manual figuring out what all the different gauge options mean and which ones I want.
I had my car into the shop just two weeks ago and they said there was no codes. But when I hook up my ultragauge, its telling me I've got a code P0461. According to this website http://www.cardiffspecialists.co.uk/tabid/82/BMW-OBD-Codes/P0461/Diagnostics/BMW/Default.aspx , this code has something to do with the fuel level sensor. This makes sense as my fuel gauge went wonky about 6 months after I bought the car. I have to rely on the trip meter to know when to put gas in the car.
The other interesting thing is that on the initial hook up the Ultragauge detected one protocol, but every other time its detected the 9141 Protocol. Is this the same one that everybody else is getting?

In the box was a notice telling you to go to the Start (http://www.ultra-gauge.com/start/) page. When you do, it walks you through some educational info, which includes a link to the Manual (http://ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/support/UltraGauge_user_manuals.htm). This is also how you complete the paperwork for the "reward".

It's funny I use to look at the temp display all the time when I did my fan swap last summer and this year I really don't much. When the alarm went off it was a reminder to pay attention to the temps when it's 114 outside! This is well worth the money when my wife drives the car as she will not be as aware of the coolant temps as I'am.

I thought about getting the gauge but now I just turn on the OBC temp display when doing long/hard drives.
Maybe I'll get the gauge some day, as I know there's other useful things too. Like an alarm!

In love with this gauge. Really helped when I lost the fan belt and had to periodically run the car to get it towed and moved around the dealership. Its also great to see the intake air temp and its effects on the air density

Have you thought about just reprogramming your temp guage so its shows the actual temp instead of a huge buffer that starts to budge when the car is already overheating?

Totally! The other day when it was 114 here my IAT was 163 and coolant temp was 208 sitting in traffic. My alarm is set at 210, it went off and I shut the AC off untill the temp went under 200. Love it!

Read the temp exactly? Than fix the gauge. Stock the buffer for dead center is 75-115C. Thats useless. Mine right now is 90-100C

I have had mine for a couple months now. Just checking back in to give a shout out to the UG's durability. I have mine mounted on the dash just left of the instrument cluster, and needless to say, it gets exposed to a lot of sun. While I remove the gauge if I am going to be away for an extended period of time (multiple days), I have left it baking in the sun for more than reasonable amounts of time. When starting the car after such a torture tests, UG beeps warning me that it is well above it's maximum heat tolerance.... yet it soldiers on. :)

And the UG EM Plus is now on sale: $70
I am trying to decide which way to go. I think I like my phone to remain dedicated to normal phone stuff, and not having to jump from app to app (task to task) and just have the UG completely separate....
What do you guys think?

Ever sort out the p0461?
Popped up on my car along with small vacuum leak codes.

I have the bluetooth Ultra-Gauge and use it with my iPhone. So far, so good. I also have an Intravee and have it feeding system information to the nav screen while driving down the road and listening to tunes on the iPod. The Ultra-Gauge shows the coolant temperature 1 to 2 degrees F higher than what the Intravee is collecting and putting up on the nav screen. Anybody have a guess why there would be a difference since the information feed is coming from the same internal car network (Can-Bus)?
