I was going for 224466 880.0. I actually remembered to hit the trip odometer reset this time, but being a creature of habit, my finger AUTOMATICALLY pushed the trip odo reset button when I next got gas, and as a result my plans have been ruined AGAIN!
So, I only managed to snap the actual odometer without the trip.

32mpg is not hard, just gotta know how to play the game. I was up to 32.6 indicated earlier but the hills destroyed it and ended up at 31.4 before filling up. The whole drive is very hilly, so it's not like the conditions were ideal. Under ideal circumstances, 33-34 can be had with relative ease.

Funny you say that because on the entire trip TO and FROM, I didn't see a single speed trap anywhere. Neither of the states I drove through, including Ohio, had anyone sitting beside the highway for speed trap reasons.

agreed, it is not hard, i regularly average 32mpg with the family in the car and the A/C on for highway trips. also, i live in a fairly flat area... when i was in vermont last week, i was averaging about 24mpg. :) lots of twisties, lots of elevation changes. my old driving roads...

I'm going to say VA takes the "crown" for that one given that they are the ONE state that bans the tool used against speed traps, have the harshest penalties, and have counties with the largest number of police per square mile than anywhere else...

Couple the two factors of being in field sales and my daughter living an hour away, I rack up the miles easily. 1,000/week is a little high though. I average just about two tanks of gas a week.

Well, it's actually more than that, per actual driving day. There were some down days due to unexpected repairs in Skagway, AK and a ferry crossing in the inner passage of AK. I thought it to be a sound idea to drive from CT to AK and back. I only got one speeding ticket the whole trip.

8000 miles in 40 years? I don't understand the purpose of that.
Really? I totally understand. Lemme try...
It was driven sparingly (obviously). It was saved for special occasions. Car shows. Weekend cruises. It was something to be loved, cherished and savored, not "used". It's, for the most part, almost exactly like it was when it was sitting on the dealer showroom in 1966. It's a time capsule. It's like sipping a fine wine or savoring a dessert as opposed to wolfing it down as fast as you can. Driving it once in awhile (as opposed to all the time) is like denying yourself that cheesecake you love because if you had it everyday, it wouldn't be special anymore. It's an heirloom to be passed down as opposed to something to "replace". It's something to be cared for and loved rather than "used up". It's a collectible, like a gun that's only ever fired a few rounds.
You can drive a car and you can put 100,000 or 200,000 miles on it. When it's 30 or 40 years old, you can repaint it, you can put new suspension parts on it, you can put new glass in it you can get the seats and dash redone, but it will still be a restored car. It will never be like it was when it had 8,000 miles on it. Ever.
Preservation isn't for everybody, but thank God some people do it, or almost no cars would ever be around 30 or 40 years later, since like washing machines or refrigerators, they'd reach the end of their useful life, be all be used up, and eventually recycled into raw material. That raw material would go to build a new car many of us here wouldn't love as much.
I get driving a car, and I get preserving one.
SC

07-20-2015, 03:00 PM
BTW, here's my personal experience with preservation:
My old man has an '87 Buick Grand National. If you don't know much about it, I'll give you the quick run-down: By today's standards, it's nothing special performance-wise, but in 1987 it was pretty damn special. It was a Buick Regal - a Buick. The quintessential GM grocery-getter. This one was different, though. It had a turbocharged and inter-cooled V6 that made it faster down the strip than any production car built that year, including a Ferrari. It came in exactly one color: Black. The only thing on the car's exterior that wasn't black were the chrome wheels (also black), and the chrome/black badging.
We drove it... For the first few years. Not a lot, but plenty. We took it on a few road-trips and drove it on weekends. He did some light, reversible modding on it (chip, CAI, exhaust), but kept it otherwise pretty pristine. Not much later, he parked it and only took out for those special occasions I mentioned.
Now, almost 30 years later, it's probably one of the nicest Grand Nationals anywhere. There are a few extremely low-mileage cars, even a few that were hardly driven, but they're damn few and far between at this point. Many were turned into sub-10-second drag cars, and most of the rest have 80, 90 or 100k miles on them, along with the door dings, rock chips, swirls, chalky paint, and interior wear/tear that goes along with the miles and years. My dad's is just shy of 20k miles and looks damn near like it's brand new. The paint is beautiful, the interior is almost perfect, and it's never seen salt, snow, or even much rain. It was a little special in terms of automative history, but it's even more special now.
Eventually, I'll buy it from him, and I'll take care of it the same way. I'll drive it sparingly, and those times in the car will be special. Memorable. In 20 years, it'll be like that Mustang.
If I ever really come into some serious money, I'll buy its meaner brother, the GNX, so it has some company, and it'll be in a sweet garage with a couple of M3's. :)
Cheers,
SC

SC gets it! Love the story about the GN. When I was growing up, my dad had an 87 Buick Regal TType Turbo Limited (mechanically IDENTICAL to a GN). Seated 6 with the velour bench in front. Damn thing was FAST. He had a GN up till about 7 or 8 years ago when he sold it... with 7k miles. Made some $ on it.
Really wish he still had it.
Anywho...
The Mustang has no seatbelts, no AC, no power assist brakes.
It has 4 wheel drum brakes, and high beams you actuate with your left foot on the floor.
The AM (only) radio has only one original speaker in the dash. It works perfectly. It pulls in baseball games, the news & weather, talk radio, and that crazy Spanish channel that always makes me hungry for burritos. LOL.
Everything works perfectly on it... like it was in the 60s.
I drive it, but my wife won't ride in it because it doesn't have seatbelts.
Can't put my kids in the car... because it doesn't have seatbelts.
I just might have to get some bolt-in seatbelts so someone will ride with me. haha
Then it may get a few more miles.

In an ideal world, I might keep both, but I hardly drive enough as it is to justify the car, on top of the other 2 cars we have in the family (wife's car and family minivan). Plus, I need to make space in the garage. :(

I have no problem with the traction control being disabled. All it does is hinder me on the track and in the snow. I just wish there was a way to keep it disabled without having those idiot lights on. Lights being illuminated on the cluster drive me bonkers!
I can't stand the fact that my windshield washer light has been on for the better part of a year now, and that I have no idea what to do to fix whatever leak is present (even though I don't see any fluid anywhere after I find it empty).

Those last couple of pics remind me - I think we have one of the best BMW instrument clusters of all time. Classic looks, clear and legible, simple yet functional. I despise the gray faces in my M5 cluster - there's not enough contrast between the white numbers and gray background, making it difficult to read in daylight in many situations. White-on-black may not be "special" like the gray signifies in M cars, but it sure works better, and looks great too.

Agreed. The fact that the new M cars have white backlighting peeves me, and the LCI F30's now have white backlighting on the climate control and maybe elsewhere. Why is BMW switching from the best (proven) color for the eyes to something that strains the eyes more??

They did? That's a shame. I thought BMW always did their signature red dials and cluster because they knew red is the best light for night vision. But it seems a lot of German manufacturers have gone that direction. I'm pretty sure Audis, Mercedes, and VWs do.

VW has been white for a few years now. I remember when their blue backlighting came out around 2000, and a lot of people ooh'd and aaah'd at the new look. But then I read that blue dials/red needles was horrible ergonomically. I'll stick with my vintage BMW look (did I just call the E46 "vintage"?), thankyouverymuch.

Not quite. I'll give you a hint: we're working with very precise numbers in this situation. This mileage is more than 3x the mileage I bought my car with (3x would be 227,889). I can safely say this is not the answer I was looking for. :)

Hmmm sounds like someone doesn't tighten their e brake cables often ;-)
I seem to have to tighten mine once or twice a year as my brakes wear is my guess.

I was thinking of doing not just that, but the speed, RPM, and MPG as well, but then I had the thought of just doing 257257 257.2. :)

Yup, from his introduction thread:
I learned that the seller purchased the car in February 2014 from EAG. It had 6,103 miles at that time. As I understand the history, it was originally part of the collection of an extremely wealthy 72- y/o gentleman who passed. All his vehicles were sold at the same time to a dealer from whom EAG acquired it.

My last name is of Scan origins. Viking blood (along with some Irish to go along with the Swede and Norwegian) is in my veins. I will update my will to reflect my wish to be burned in one of my cars. A tumulus of old Roundels shall mark and adorn the site of my funeral. That would rule.
To get back on topic, I hit 100k on my ZHP last night.
