View Full Version : Considering Selling the ZHP -- list on forums?

I think I am going to be selling it this summer. As I have come to know, most of the people here wouldn't touch a salvage title "with a 10,000 foot pole." (forgot who said that :p)
Anyway, you guys thinks it's even worth listing it on here and E46F? I know it'll be on craigslist, but I don't want to waste my time with people bashing salvage (on E46F, I know people here will be nice) without knowing anything about car repair.
So from you guys, who have been on online boards much longer than I: Do you think it's worth listing it on forums?

It's worth listing as long as the price is commensurate to condition and title.

I for one, am sad to hear you parting with her. I hope you stay on the forum afterwards! I would say go for it and post here (and I am one of those that would tend not to buy salvage, but would never think of bashing anyone [I believe I speak on everyone's behalf here on the latter at least]). Also place it on zhpregistry.net

Sad that you are moving to a different vehicle. What are your reasonings behind it if I may ask? If in reality you wouldn't be able to sell it or get much of your money back out of it would it be more beneficial to simply hold onto it?
Im not real familiar as to how much the title would affect the value but I know that with it being salvaged you are going to have a narrower group of people who would be open to getting it. As long as the price is right considering the condition of the vehicle im sure you would be able to find a buyer but would more than likely take more time to sell as a result. If you are needing a quick return you will pron need to list it at a lower price. Then again there may be someone who doesn't care as much or depending on how the car was totaled in the first place wont consider it a major problem to begin with. I don't know the specifics but if you make that known in your listing it should keep the bashing to a minimum. Best of luck with whatever you decide. As always we hope you stay an active member.

I have no intention of leaving this place. I have come to realize that I look forward every day to reading this forum and partaking; and 99% of my participation isn't even related to the ZHP.
Bavarian, I have no worries whatsoever of being bashed on this forum. I worry that if I list the car on E46F, that 19/20 of the responses are going to be useless or stupid (yet it still may be worth it considering how large the base is). I know ZHPMafia will be absolutely respectful and kind, as always.
To everyone: I want another ZHP. I love this freaking car, and if I am going to buy another car, I want another ZHP.
Here is my reasoning about this car, however. Right now, I am into it about $8500. 2003 Silbergrau Sedan, 6MT, leather seats, silver cube, no navi, no cold weather, but it does have folding rear seats.
Knowing the salvage market (I filed paperwork on hundreds if not thousands of salvage title vehicles when I still worked in the car business full time), the typical hit on value is 20-35%. Realistically, with how hard it is to find a ZHP with low miles, I think I can readily get $10.5k-$11.4k. Within that range, I won't know till I try, though. Not enough salvage ZHP's to exactly make a statistical guess.
Here's what, though. There are upsides and downsides to salvage buying and fixing. In this case, it's maintenance/car flaws, but mostly cars fault, not PO.
To get the car in the shape I would want it to be, I would need:
Reflash DME to fix 2800rpm stutter issue.
Service the VANOS.
Replace FCABs. (Possibly RTABs as well, haven't looked into them.)
Needs to shocks already, but I'd rather go with a whole suspension for about $200-$300 more.
Needs a new steering wheel.
Needs new rear tires.
I get the feeling my sunroof is about to die, creaks like a mofo.
Also, I started my car today at school and got a really loud chattering noise; not my fan or anything engine related. I think it's my flywheel or something clutch related. Time bomb.
Needs new rear brake pads (and possibly rotors).
As it stands, I am set to make about $3000 on the car if I sell it. (Profit was my original intention until I fell in love. Kinda like taxes and marriage.)
If I were to get all of things done, say goodbye profit margin. Me getting a car with such little maintenance done was luck of the draw, however. What I was planning on doing was selling this ZHP and fixing another one. Probably higher mileage. My profit margin from my current ZHP plus the lower cost of fixing a higher mileage ZHP = money for mods/maintenance (possible S54, I see a ZHP for sale soon with 215k miles, perfect candidate).
Not to mention the guy who did a great job painting my last car did a shitty job prepping my ZHP. Paint it already chipping in front like crazy.
For example, my friend just fixed himself a 2005 330ci ZHP with 77k miles, well optioned, 6MT. His cost him around $9k, but his is in great condition mechanically, unlike mine.
This is my logic. Please tell me what you think.
But seriously, ZHP = awesome and I'll be back for more.

Sounds like it's going to need $2k in maintenance to bring it current? That going to eat a lot if that $3k profit. No?

I guess it would be around 2k. Sadly, all that maintenance would not raise the value of the car because salvage title is the limiting factor for sale price. The idea here is that if I sell this car and fix another ZHP cheaper, I would combine the profit from my last car and the smaller cost of my next car.
I would put the maintenance into the current one if it raised the value of the car, but it does not.

Yeah, sounds like you know what you are doing. If I were in your shoes, I would sell her off now and maximize profits. It's never economically beneficial to perform preventive maintenance on a car that you are planning to sell. Good luck!
I would sell it and move on. And I know you wanted one that did not have leather.

I am different - I bought my ZHP knowing that it had been in a wreck and most people on this forum would shy away from it. However, I knew it would be a daily driver and I bought it at a good price to drive - not to admire. It served me well until it was totalled - I did well on the insurance and bought another car. If you were closer to GA I would be very interested in your car.

Well, what do you know. Dad randomly offered me a $250 monthly to help me out (since I am not working and going to school). Looks like I'm staying in the silver gray, because I doubt I'd find another 63k mileage ZHP.
Mileage is not an issue if proper maintenance is there. But yeah low miles are nice too.

Thanks! Vasya that is true, but I don't want to go through the heartache of fixing another car if I can afford to keep this one and maintain it.

Keep it, fix it, love it, it is a ZHP. Seriously, as long as you disclose, price appropriately, who cares what the haters say.

honestly... keep it and wait until you find a salvage E60 M5 and swap it.
I'll get you the BAR tag.
salvage title stock ZHP is not worth selling with a minuscule profit point, keep it and have fun. Beat that engine into the ground so you can upgrade everything. E60 M5's are not that expensive at the auction considering how many exist in SoCal. Let me know, I've looked into this swap for a while now.

I've considered this. First, parts for an E60 are bat shit crazy expensive, so it depends on the damage.
More importantly though. I don't work, I work with. The only way for me to ever afford an M5 would be if I kept flipping cars and making money off each. If I drive my zhp into the ground, I also drive my capital into the ground.
This decision essentially says that the zhp will be my DD for my university years, and possibly medical school if I get into one locally.

Thanks! I really love my parents for being so supportive of the risk I am taking by approaching such an intense career choice as an M.D.
They are investing in their future, because if it pans out, I'm their retirement.
