Picked up the new toy this morning.
The transaction went off without a hitch. Previous owners drove about an hour from their home in rainy sleety conditions to meet me at my hotel. They represented the car as mechanically up to date and cosmetically excellent, and it exceeded expectations. Flawless paint, unbelievably clean and well maintained interior. Steering wheel needs a little rehabilitation. I drooled over the car for a while, we drove to their credit union, and title was transferred quickly and efficiently. Oh, gosh, all of a sudden, she's mine. Big thanks to the POs, nice, honest folks, and a pleasure to deal with. A little air in one tire, topped off with some expensive 93 octane, and I got a 260 mile shakedown drive from Asheville, NC to Richmond, KY. Mountains would have been even more fun if it weren't raining all day.
So, this car and my 325i steptronic are technically both E46s, the same year, and virtually the same mileage. Certainly are different in character, in every way possible. The ZHP sounds incredible, handles like a BMW should, and it's not an M3, but it sure puts down power like a 325 could only dream of. This is my first BMW manual transmission since my '84 E30, and I may have forgotten just how good they can be.
I was torn between a sedan and a coupe, and I have to say, I'm very happy I went with the coupe. Nice change from the sedan I already have. Especially in Imola, this is one very attractive car.
So far, couldn't be happier. Might drive it another 3 or 4 hundred miles tomorrow
