Hello all. I am new to the forum and I have introduced myself on the new member page. I have just aquired a ZHP and I am still in my initial honeymoon period. As my user name suggests I have previously owned a 323 as well as some Volkswagens and Audis in Europe.
I will do my best not to make this too long winded but I am completely in love with this car. I got the car from my brother who gave me a very good deal on it. He has maintained the car very well and has kept it in quite immaculate condition. The car is Silver with Alcantara interior. The car is auto and has 194,000 miles on it but drives like it has 50,000 miles on it. So there is hope for all of you low milage ZHP owners out there. It is a California car and most of the miles are highway miles as he commuted 150 miles a day to work each day. He is quite handy with a wrench so has replaced most of the obvious culprits such as cooling system at 120,000, control arms. The Vanos and Oil Separater were done about 1,000 miles ago. When he did the Vanos a screw broke off and left him without a car to go to work. So that prompted him to go out and buy a new car. He chose a Mazda :facepalm When he was able have time to work on the car again and get everything sorted he decided to sell the car to me. He had planned to get 300,000 out of the car and I have no doubt he would have succeeded. I had concerns about getting a car with such high milage on it but as I knew the history and I knew how rigid he was with the servicing.... He put shades in the windshield everyday and as a result the interior is not the least bit faded. Just a bit of wear on the drivers side seat from getting in and out of the car. I suppose my only concern would be if the GM auto transmission will last the duration. He did change the fluid and filter every 60,000 miles with Redline so I suppose there should not be a problem.
Coming from the 323 standard this car is in another world and another class. It is very hard not to want to drive fast. It is just so much fun and feels like a whole new level. The auto is taking a while to get used to as it seems like you just can't take it easy and drive at a leisurely pace from a stop position. I am not a fast driver but I just can't seem to resist the temptation of going from 0 to 35 quickly. Some of you may gasp but I had driven my sisters 2013 3 series with the turbo 4 and IMO I did not find it as exhilarating and satisfying as driving this ZHP. I was getting about 28 mpg in the 323 on the freeway and he claimed he was getting about 26 in the ZHP at 80 mph. It seems a bit thirstier than that to me so I will have to see. I do have the dreaded dim hid problem so that will have to be taken care of soon. I want to upgrade the stock Sat Nav and he is giving me a hard time about it but it is crucial that I have bluetooth in the car for phone and music streaming. It seems a shame to have to butcher the car (cut into the air duct for a 2U) and I am feeling a bit guilty as he has kept the car in such good stock condition for so long but I will be spending quite a bit of time in the car and the stock HK system is not doing it for me. I really want to start with the interior and I have ordered some Bimmian leds for the dome as well as leather boots to replace the shifter and parking brake Alcantara ones. I know some of you may frown on that but it is taking me a while to get used to the Alcantara. Some days I find it very elegant and others I scratch my head and wonder if I like it. I have also replaced the worn euro tray with the cup holder as I was used to the cup holder there from my 323. I guess I know if I don't do these things in the beginning I will never get around to it once the car becomes familiar and I also think it needs some tlc and appreciation that a new owner can supply. If you have made it this far thanks for humoring me. I suppose only other ZHP owners will know the feeling of how exciting it is to be new to the car. I look foward to sharing my experiences with you.

Yep, you're definitely hooked like the rest of us. I agree, it is a LOT of fun to enjoy a new car, even though its not new. The ZHP is just such a timless look and experience, really fun to drive. Enjoy the car and the mods you have planned. You can always ask questions here and people will help with just about everything... Good luck!

Yes. I could never figure out why his car looked so much more elegant than my old e46. I knew it had another body kit on it but I never noticed how different they really were. I certainly notice now. I don't think the car looks dated at all.

A few pics. I will try to get some pics up of the interior. I did the new owner duty and washed a couple of times and waxed. I will do the claybar thing after a couple more washes. I spent forever on the rims and had to resort rubbing between the spokes with my fingers. But as you can see the paint has held up remarkably well for a car with almost 200,000 miles on it. I am so grateful that he took such good care of the car. No dents. It is begging for a new emblem on the front. I always thought waxing was to make the car shiny and have only recently learned that it protects the paint.

I'm sure you'll love your car considering the care that your brother put into making sure it ran great. lets see if I can answer some of your concerns:

I can easily see getting 300k and more out of that motor

when the tranny eventually dies just swap a 6 speed into it

if he was driving 150mi/day I can see 25mpg, I can easily do that on a trip to Vegas (not driving conservatively). Shorter/non-freeway heavy trips will be considerably worse on mileage.

any other questions?

Hi. Thanks for the reply. Is there any reason an auto tranny would not go to 300,000? I must admit I am getting quite spoiled by the auto.

Welcome! I have a high-mileage ZHP too - mine is at 214k :)

Hi. Thanks for the reply. Is there any reason an auto tranny would not go to 300,000? Is is cheaper to put a 6 speed in it than to just put another auto in?

Knowing PO did his homework on the fluid changes, I wouldn't be surprised if it lasted to 300k. They're notorious for failing around 150k when following BMW's "lifetime fluid" policy.

323, I can relate to how you felt going from your last car to this. In my case I went from my 323i to my ///M... talking about a world of difference ;) I happened on my ZHP and for a daily driver, it's perfect :biggrin I am happy to hear you're enjoying your ZHP and you should! I would recommend you keep all required maintenance current then mod as you like :thumbsup

You will find many of us are knowledgable as well as true enthusiasts here on this awesome site. Awesome story, thanks for sharing! :thumbsup

:foottap I'm am eagerly curious how you got 28mpg out of your previous 323! I'm only able to manage 24 on the hwy. My guess is it's the mountains.

Again, congrats! The new to you ZHP is beautiful, and it's wonderful to hear it's been excellently maintained, and you still have contact with the maintainer. I also love to see high mileage e46's still running strong. My Lucy has ~198k.

It did have a 5 speed and that was on the freeway. It did not have the OBC so I would just fill the tank and when I refilled I would do the calculation by how many gallons I used vs. how many miles I drove. As I said previously I am not a particularly sporty driver, so that may have something to do with it. However with the ZHP the temptation to utilise all of the power is just too great.

Ryan, racing stripes are bad for mpg. Das why.

Welcome 323toZHP,

What part of CA are you located? I know what you mean about the temptation to speed around from stop. I also have the auto-step and find it really fun. When I began looking for a ZHP I first thought I would get a 6 speed but after testing driving some decided to get the auto. Maybe I've gotten old but I had thoughts of crawling in bumper to bumper traffic on the freeway with the clutch. I guess I just like a sweet shifting automatic more in a daily driver. The step manual mode takes some getting used to. I was on the freeway and wanted to punch it so I did a quick over and up but the rpms did not come up as much as I wanted so I knock it up again and the rpms jumped over 5k. It sounded real nice and took off smartly.

Welcome...

Nice looking ZHP! You need the "Rando Sprint Booster Mod"!
Sprint Booster in SD is perfect, the way the car should of came from the factory. BTW I get 25.0 mpg on the freeway at 75mph.

Funny you mention that I was looking at quite a few threads here and saw the Sprint Booster mentioned, but I didn't know what it was. Sounds like a cool mod. I am in Ventura CA, but I am also in LA quite a bit. As far as the Auto goes, I was a bit reluctant to go back to a stick a year ago when I got the 323. However now I have the Auto I kind of miss the stick. Almost like the ability to drive at a leisurely pace has been taken away from me. Now that I have lived with the Auto for a few days I am slowly remembering how convenient it is. It is a very smooth Auto as well I must add.

Ok maybe this belongs in the what did you do to your ZHP today thread but I put some gumout in the fuel tank on empty today. I drove it for about 15 miles and the idle went up from about 550 to 700 where I think it is suppose to be. I probably should have asked here if it was a good idea as I don't want to melt any seals or anything. However after I filled up and drove another 20 miles the idle went back to 550-600. Is this anything I should be worried about?

:) I am in that new car mode which usually wears off quickly and I was at Autozone. It was on sale so I fell for the hype.

A heart warming welcome! I acquired mine in Nov and it still feels new to me, and you're dead on about the tendency to speed. I find it a little bit too easy, especially with the desire to hear that deep exhaust note. Post up some pics of the interior once you have time. :-)

I will try to get some pics of the interior up tomorrow. I thought the excitement would wear off after a week or so but I always look forward to taking the car for a spin. You are right about the exhaust. I took it on the freeway today and didn't even want the stereo on. I don't remember feeling this connected to a car ever. Its the perfect combination of performance, style and luxury. As silly as it sounds I doubt I would prefer an M with more power and stiffer suspension. Speaking of the suspension it still has the original shocks on it. They are still pretty stiff, and there is no bouncing when you push down on them. I have always heard you should replace shocks every 60,000 or so, but if they don't leak is there really a need?

Awesome, congrats! I replaced my shocks/springs at 60K but you can ride on it longer fo sho depending on how it was driven, roads, etc. And, SB mod FTW.
