View Full Version : Rusty Paint Chip - Simple Solution?

Hey guys,

I have a small paint chip under the Hofmeister kink section of the window trim. The window trim is broken, and so I think the paint got chipped from the trim moving around when it was loose. I have taped it back for now, and it seems to be holding up well. However, I still need to fix the paint chip. It is already rusting :(

I was going to get a sanding pen to sand down the area, thus removing the rust.

What do I do next? The chip is so small, so I don't really feel like buying the BMW paint kit just to get the color matched; I'm mainly concerned about stopping the rust from spreading. Is there some cheap over-the-counter lacquer or clear coat I can just put over the chip once I sand it down? Or is BMW touchup paint and clear-coat the only way to go as far as durability?

Lol, that's more expensive than the BMW paint. Thanks though. It looks like it works pretty well.

Heed Dane's advice, mortal.

Seriously, you want the best touch-up available. Just because something is BMW brand doesn't mean it's the best. Take for example Sonax and BMW Wheel Gel. Sonax is more expensive. Sonax is much better. That BMW wasn't very good, I might add.

Hm ok, I'll probably get it then.

It doesn't seem to come with clear coat, though. Or is the "SealAct" stuff clear coat?

Thanks.

For today, cover it with clear nail polish. Rust cannot continue to occur of it doesn't have oxygen as a source, so seal it with wife/gf/sister's clear polish until you figure out what you want to do. When time to finally fix it, nail polish remover first, then remove rust, touch-up paint, and seal.

Hmmm... it looks like rust that has already been touched up?

Iron X Gel and a soft toothbrush will get rust out of paint chips.

I'd go with the Dr. colorchip kit as Dane advised. I just used that kit a few weeks ago and have no complaints with it. I believe the kit is good for a year or so after its been opened so it will be handy for any other chips that you may get in the future

Hard to tell, but is there any rust under the paint? Have to be very careful and remove all the rust that's there, or it'll spread like cancer...

I might suggest going with your initial thought and getting the fiber glass rust pen to really get all that stuff out. Then follow up with iron x (or similar) and top with dr. Colorchip (great investment, btw).

Good luck!

Awesome, thanks for all the input guys.

The rust doesn't seem to be under the paint, no.

I need to buy this stuff ASAP. I've been procrastinating it...

Good advice here. I have a similar spot on my passenger side A-pillar... guess I'll order some stuff.
