So with spring and the Mafia meet fast approaching I would like to get some painting done on the car, more specifically the front bumper and side skirts. They both have some rash from curbs and what not but are still structurally intact. I had a guy that does good work quote me a price of $400 prep and paint on all three pieces and was wondering if that seems like a fair price to you all. I know he does good work based on a friend of mine having his car completely repainted. I know silver is going to be a PITA to match up right but hopefully he can blend it well enough.

That's fairly reasonable, although I'd be more comfortable around $300.

I would think the same other than im not really sure how much prep is needed due to the scrapes that have happened. Its not major but will be more complicated then just simply stripping the paint.

$400 for bumper respray, and side skirts? That's a pretty good deal... ASSUMING they are a decent painter.

My point, sometimes you DO get what you pay for. Have you seen any of this persons previous work? I'd had for you to have a ton of orange peel or something after it's done.

That's a bargain if its a quality body shop. The issue is how much prep they do and based off of that- the paint adhesion- specifically on the front bumper.

Usually a rough estimate is around $150 per panel.

He did a buddy of mines 07 Si after the factory paint went to hell. Looked immaculate after he got done with it.

Adhesion is another concern I have considering part of the reason it needs a respray is due to the paint peeling from primer a couple months after my dad and I painted it to begin with. Part of it may be that I didn't allow sufficient time for it to cure but I got impatient wanting to see it on the car and needed my ride back.

I don't know anything useful about automotive paint prep other than painting plastic/poly parts requires putting flex additive into the paint. But my front bumpers, hood, and side skirts also could use a repaint, and my mirror covers. If you're paying him to do the big stuff, see if he'll do your mirror covers for free. One warning is when you remove the mirror covers it's easy to break the little retention tabs. Either remove glass first then gently pry loose the 4 retention clips from inside the mirror, or buy two new mirror covers so they can be painted at the same time. And if your hood has road rash in front, maybe take it off and ask him to do that at the same time?

I've got a guy, that is fixing some clear on my car, small ding on vertical section of boot lid, and removing front bumper to paint after de-seaming my front splitters.

Splitters will be gloss black, bumper will be fresh Imola

= $475.00

I'm going to see if he will additionally take care of the small rust spot (common rear passenger side wheel well area) for maybe a $500.00 package deal.

I have a scratch in the rear quarter that needs respray. I was quoted 300 and 375 to respray the rear quarter and blend through mid passenger window (no rear quarter panel breaks on the 1).

Yea, that seems like a good deal.

Excellent thoughts. My hood has got some rock chips down to bare metal and a few scratches. I may end up just waiting and having him do all these other things as well considering im sure he will want to bump the price up.

We added a flex agent when we sprayed the bumper. My guess is we went wrong somewhere in the prep work on the primer. It's fairly easy to chip off the paint from where its already started. Im guessing it just didn't bond correctly?

Here is a recent pick to give you all an idea of what's going on. Always good to have visual aids :)

What's not shown is the rash on the passenger lower corner where the curb bit it one night in a snow covered parking lot...

Wasn't suggesting you forgot the flex agent! Which would probably cause cracking, not peeling. I know primer adhesion (or print-to-primer) can be an issue but don't know how to do it right or wrong. Is it the type of primer? Type of paint? Drying time? Does primer need a light sanding to roughen in up before painting? I'm just clueless about those things. But I assume a good body shop would offer some kind of warranty against peeling.

There's going to be a ton of prep work just in your bumper. With the paint peeling from the primer, it may indicate you used incompatible paint and primer. My guess is it was the wrong primer. Every bit of the paint will have to come off the bumper. The primer may have to be removed as well, or there may be a fancy trick pro-painters can do to allow the wrong primer to adhere to the right primer. Also, with plastic body pieces an adhesion promoter, like bully dog adhesion promoter, is needed to get the paint/primer to stick to the plastic. My bumper was primed from the retailer, we wet sanded with 800 grit, wiped it down with alcohol, then a tack cloth, and then sprayed it with the adhesion promoter. When dry, we sprayed with the paint.

Then you say there's rash on your sideskirts. If you're wanting that filled, there's going to be a lot of labor there too.

If you trust this painter, and are sure they're going to do a good job, $400 is an amazing price.

I offered to do the prep work myself but he assured me that he would do it himself and quoted me $400. This is all over the phone so he didn't see it personally but from what I've heard he does excellent work. I spoke to him originally last year about it so we will see if he is still willing to do it for the same price.

I had an estimate done today for the E82. Same shop that helped Ry paint Lucy. (same painter actually----thanks Ry) Here is it. I have a small scratch in the passenger rear quarter-panel, and some ***hole swiped my bumper last week....so i need about a 1ft square paint repair on it and a full respray of the bumper. Total. 827. 3/5 of that was bumper. See attachment for the full quote. Hope it helps.

Did you get to talk to Eddie? And I guess you're going insurance route?

Dang. I hope he doesn't bump it up that much. If so it would be hard for me to justify shelling out so much on a car that's worth probably under 5k now...

Ry-
I did not meet him but he is going to do my car starting 8am tomorrow. Said it would be ready friday evening. Unfortunately insurance isnt playing a factor in this. I bought the car with the scratch, and the bumper is a $500 out of pocket expense for someone being an ***hole that cant drive.

It cost me $470 to get my front bumper resprayed, which was the cheapest quote of the top-tier body shops in my area. It cost my relative $300 to get a rear bumper puncture fixed- most shops wanted ~$800. For places other than the front end, color match is what's important imo. For the front end, prep/adhesion is way more important than elsewhere on the car. No one wants a resprayed bumper peppered with chips a year later. If the body shops you guys are using are good (and the paint holds up) you are getting some very good deals!
