So I had my ballast go out pn my AL headlight and finally got another one today. I installed it and the headlight turns on now but the high beam won't turn on. So the shutter won't open.

Any ideas? It was a new ballast I put in.

Cycle the mirror manually. Sometimes they get stuck (dust and all). DW posted a tutorial on this a while ago.

Yes, check the shutter & shutter solenoid to be sure that they are not stuck. Also, if you haven't already done so, be SURE that all 4 wires are plugged in tightly as they can be tough to get into place at times. Are you getting high beam function on the opposite side?

Ok I'll check that tomorrow. I checked the wires and yes, the high beam on the other side does work

Alriht I'll look around for it. I woke up this morning really sick. Must have gotten sick from my weekend trip so I'll check that when I get better. May be a few days

Likewise. He's good. Still trying to figure out if he can make it to the meet. I'm hoping he can so he can showcase Karen.

He can make it. See? That wasn't so hard.

I'll inform him that he is now going haha.

Is that video on your ZKW headlights? I don't remember seeing anything like that on my AL's when I had them apart to replace the ignitor but maybe I just didn't notice it.

No actuator on the ALs.

Did you clean all connections and double check that all four plugs are pressed and snapped in?

If you wish to cycle the shutters, you need to remove the Xenons and with the eraser end of a pencil, gently press them forward through the bulb hole. that should free any binds up. If it doesn't give, I DO NOT recommend exerting any force you don't feel comfortable with.

Ok that's what I thought. Thanks for clarifying. I did double check the connections that they were snapped in but did not clean them. Tomorrow I'll try to swap bulbs and clean connections and see if I make any progress.

Thanks

Change them both if one is bad. Osram CBI 5000k bulbs seem to be the best on the market right now.

Yes....this was during the ZKW era.

Burned ZKW

AL Bowl > I see the plunger, but I don't see the shutter?

Plunger is energized and retracts pulling the shutter downwards. The bowl in your pic is upside down.

OK. I guess what I meant was....I don't see what I "pulled" in the video, on the AL's.

It has to be there though...right?

Hornung418

Nope. Look at the solenoid and you will see it attaches to the cut off shield. You can't physically pull it. Simplistic design with fewer moving parts.

Did you complete said ordered and diagnosed directions?

Sounds like you made sure everything was tight....but you really need to now move on to trying to detremine if something is bound up with the high beam mechanism.

BTW for anyone wondering, last time I had the headlights apart to replace the ignitor I must have not seated the bi-xenon plug fully as it had come out which is why the high beam wasn't working. Stupid me :facepalm

At least it was an easy fix! Had the same thing happen with one of my fogs, thought it was out but the connector had just popped off, nothing better then an easy fix.

Exactly, Jon (Jupiter) noticed it when I was changing my headlight bulbs at the meet. Thanks again Jon for noticing that!
