First of all i have a new respect for those who do DIY videos, i did all of the video taping from my phone one handed so sorry about the blurry and shaky video

This is me replacing the Oring on the DISA in a 2004 BMW 325i
this is for educational purposes

I tried doing this to fix my P0171 and P0174 codes (system too lean in bank 1 and 2), but they came back. Hoping to find the true solution soon, although this may be what your car needs won't know till you try.

there are many other options though, as far as who or where to buy them i believe it is a size #140, but don't quote me on that

I did read that VITON is the material you want your o-ring to be made from

BE SURE TO HAVE YOUR TOOLS PLACED IN A SAFE AREA, they could fall under the engine as did mine and lose them

The entire process took a total of about 1 hour and that is including me filming, so it could take you about 45 min considering you have all the tools ready and how much of the old gasket you plan on scratching out, (i took out all of it)

You can also pick up a Fel-Pro gasket at your local Advance as well for an o-ring replacement. It DID fix my lean conditions bank 1 and bank 2. Fel-Pro PN 35489 it's for a Ford Probe

With the Fel-Pro gasket, you can just run down to the local store and get'er done that same day.

I just happened to stumble across that O-ring on e46fanatics one day. It's what fixed my lean codes.

So I had to have a shop help me replace an exhaust cam shaft position sensor as the head was stripped, and was hoping that was the cause of my bad idle. The shop said my DISA oring was bad, but not the DISA itself. I bought the oring from G.A.S., but whats a good way to tell if the DISA valve itself is bad, indicating I should by the DISA fix kit as well?

With the DISA valve out if the car open the flap all the way and hold your finger over the Diaphragm hole. Let go of the flap and if it closes all the way with NO resistance the DISA is bad. (See video below)
Also I highly recommend the rebuild kit GAS has for the DISA.

Thanks for the vid! The shop I had my car at was pretty sure the valve should be in good shape, he just said "you've got a massive leak at that o-ring", so hopefully the mac-daddy o-ring from GAS is all I need. However, if the valve is wonky, I'll likely go ahead and get the rebuild kit then from GAS as I've heard nothing but good things about it.

Any recommendations on the grease to use? GAS site just says to use the supplied "synthetic grease", I figured I could use something similar at a local parts store, but want to make sure I do not get something that might be corrosive to it.

Ya that is good, or any Teflon based lube. I lubed mine a year ago when I did the GAS kit. I removed it the other day and was suprised how hard it was to get out. The oring was still good, luckily I did lube it otherwise it would of been a beouch to remove.

I can't view the video right now, but I imagine all that I need to remove is the air intake plumbing, just for access to the two screws, right?

Yes. Air box and the first intake tube. Then the 2 screws and electrical plug. Just hold everything out of the way and pull the DISA out. It's kinda snug but it will come out.

If you are going to pull the Disa, my advice is to definitely get the GAS kit.

It's basically a redesign which fixes the shortcomings of the stock disa in three different aspects. First it upgrades the valve flapper from plastic to aircraft grade aluminum. 2nd, it has a completely different method for the pivot rod, one that is impossible for it to come loose and get sucked into the intake! 3rd, the sealing o-ring is upgraded to a thicker more heavy duty one.

What is the time frame that these usually fail? Mine is an 01, and from what I can tell was never replaced. Will they all sooner or later fail? Am I past the usual fail point? For now, I only have just the gasket coming, and will go ahead and just replace only that. If it's simple enough, then I may go ahead and order the refresh kit just preemptively.

When I started researching this issue the failure rate was unpredictable. Some guys have 150K on their stock DISA and NO problems. Others have reported failures at 80K. I didn't have any issues with mine I just wanted the piece of mind that it would come apart and get sucked into the engine. The GAS DISA kit for $85 gave me that and the car runs better. Apparently the previous owner had issues with the oring on the DISA sucking air and decided to use forma gasket to seal it. I almost couldn't get it off. If money allows I would do it. Pretty simple upgrade.

Yea, until a few more weeks, cant drop for it just yet, but as mentioned, if I can get this done fairly easy, then I will go ahead and buy the full kit in the next couple weeks and swap it out again... maybe I'll email GAS and see if I can order the kit sans o-ring.

Welp, as Murphy's law would have it, I pulled the DISA valve off and the flap fell right out. I just went ahead and got the beefy replacement. On a side note, when trying to get the intake plumbing out of the way, the port that the weird F-shaped hose connector sticks into... it ripped. Can I just use some high temp super glue to fix that? I think that whole intake tube section only costs like $30 bucks, but for a temp fix, I figured some good glue would suffice? I attached an image and the red line is where the tear happened.
