Are there any consequences in doing that? I read that it will make the engine a bit louder. I'm all for that. But will it make the hood hotter or damage the paint?

Mine's removed; pulled it out when I attempted re-inserting the little tabs at the edges & they just crumbled in my hands. So far no noticeable difference / problems . . . so far.

Did the ZHPMafia hood liner project ever get traction?

I thought Marcus put the brakes on anything bearing the mafia name without his approval. And since he has been busy my guess is that they never got traction and were given up on.

JP is still heading this up. They won't be ZHPMafia.com hood insulators. They'll say BMW on them I believe.

I'm guess the roundel will not be included as it is a BMW trademark...

I could use a new hood insulator. Mine has shrunk slightly. Side tabs barely go in.

Still up for the new hoodliner, regardless of what it says.

I check to see the thread and was surprised it was already two pages.... now I see why.

But on topic. There are no faults to removing it? Also, is the engine sound louder? That would be the only reason for me doing it.

Oh and would I be able to put it back in if I wanted to, or do the plastic pieces break apart.

I pulled mine, no ill effects, nor did I notice any increase in engine noise. Only downfall, the hood isn't completely painted underneath...

Not true. I believe JP's guy will put on whatever we want.

Haven't you been waiting the better part of a year? Might it be worth just moving the group buy to another forum altogether? E46fanatics seems to be more friendly towards that kind of thing.

Marcus' last post on the matter sounded pretty damning

Right. It was when we were a BMW CCA SIG though as well.

Can you elaborate on what being a SIG has to do with whether or not JP is allowed to host a group buy here?

No. I'm not going to elaborate. It doesn't matter.

The motor is a bit louder with it off. More noticeable when standing in front of/outside of the car than when inside.

I think it would be a great advertisement purpose. We have stickers for the windows, but hut why not under the hood? Say you're at a meet and everyone has their hood open, yours says ZHPMafia.com...so what do they do? Pull out their phone and look it up. Seems like a great advertisement opportunity to me. :dunno

From a GS3, this was sent.

it doesn't make that much of the difference. had no place to put it on my cf hood so i left it off.

Be careful, removing your under-hood cover can let some of the powarrrr leak out.

Don't say you haven't been warned :shifty:

Pulled mine out 9 months ago. No issues here. The car knows better than to give me issues.

Anything with a BMW Roundel on it won't be sold through the site. We won't be contributing to trademark infringement.

If e46fanatics doesn't mind, then I'd definitely suggest doing the group buy there. I certainly won't be offended if you guys do it there.

If a hood insulation product ever gets off the ground here, and doesn't infringe on anyone's mark, jp knows where to find me.

I agree. The engine is a little louder from behind the wheel with it off. One of the things I really like about this car is the refined sound it makes. There's a delicate balance between engine and exhaust sound that is thrown off slightly without the hood liner.

My old hood liner is terrible though. It's shrunken and droops down onto the engine. I'm looking at two option. Zip tying the tabs to the hood or replacing it altogether. I'm thinking about going with something like DynaMat's Dynaliner. Has anybody tried it? How is it at sound absorbing?

My hood liner is good, but not great; showing some age. Regardless if or where this is done, the liner can be designed to hold a legit Roundel, just like an aftermarket hood, although design may be trickier. For that matter, liner can be designed to hold any sort of display item that is heat-resistant.

Mine collapsed long ago. I've not had it for thousands of miles. Took the under tray off as well

I did not like running without insulation in the summer heat so I picked up $20 worth of GT-Mat which is similar to Dynamat. Works well.

Dave, is it fire retardant?

Dave1027
06-15-2014, 10:10 AM
I'm not sure. It's has an aluminum facing so I would assume it to resist fire. I can tell you it does a good job of spreading out the heat. The area directly over the exhaust side is cooler than it used to be. It also sounds better than running without. Much less engine noise. Now, almost all of the sound comes from the muffler. That's the way I like it. More of a refined sound.
