Anyone know where to rent this tool? Or remotely cheaper than $300? Those subframe bushings are killing me right now

What are the bushings doing? Aren't those solid rubber? How can they go bad in 10 years?

They go bad. Its not uncommon. Especially a problem on e36. Its not as bad on our generation but still occurs.
I have a tool that dad made but it needs some tweaking in order to be used again. I need to get a new bolt long enough and strong enough to handle an air wrench. Only way you'll get the old ones after they've seated.

Burn them out.
But i still need a tool to put them back in. Though this sounds fun :)
I'm actually replacing the bushings on the M3 subframe.. :whistles
Putting them back in use something with the same outer diameter and beat them in.

If no access to another car:
Buy a subframe off of eBay (less then $100 shipped)
Have shop press new bushings in
Sale old subframe on eBay for same price.
It you have access to a second car, then remove your subframe and take it to have them pressed.
Doing it on the car is a bear, especially without the tool.

Or you could go with upgraded urethane bushings. Was still a little difficult to get each side seated in but was still much easier than to replace the stock ones.
Powerflex is what I went with when I did mine.
