So I've noticed a few pictures of water beading on people's cars so I figured we'd make a thread about it. But let's post what wax we're using and how long it's been on the car.

For instance, this is just CG V7 spray wax/sealant that I put on 2 weeks ago. No other protection on it. The pic is from last night after it rained for 30 mins or so. Crappy iPhone picture.

Here's one from a couple months ago which is also just CG V7 after a couple weeks.

Here's CG 50/50 wax after 3 weeks

That's what it is advertised as, a lifetime clearcoat enhancement sort of thing. but really it's just a sealer. Essentially it's a synthetic, long lasting wax. It will make your paint bead for about three or four months before it breaks down.

Seal then wax the paint. That's what I did and my car still beads up nicely.

I used Wolfgang's Deep Gloss 3.0 paint sealant then topped with a paste wax of my choice.

Here's a good article I found!

Some detailers find that a polymer sealant tends have a flat, silvered mirror look. Adding a Carnauba wax to the surface provides depth of shine, gloss, jetting (the so called ‘wet look’) and a warmth to the paint surfaces overall look. Bear in mind that how a paint surface ‘looks’ is very subjective and tends to invoke an emotional reaction rather than a logical one 95% of an applied wax comprises out gassed solvent that is wiped away, whereas 65% of a polymer sealant that is applied remains.

Detailers who prepare show cars will often layer a Carnauba wax on top of a synthetic wax; the synthetic wax acts as a gloss layer, while the carnauba wax adds depth and a so called wet-look (jetting) appearance

Polymer sealants

Need a porous surface to bond to, they initially adhere by surface tension and then after a period in which the solvents /oils in the carrier system vaporize (outgas) the polymers cross-link to form a covalent (molecular) bond to the surface. This process usually requires 12-24 hours, which are time and temperature and / or humidity dependent.

Note that drying and curing are two different processes. Drying generally refers to evaporation of the solvent or thinner, whereas curing (cross-linking) refers to polymerization of the binder, which imparts adhesion, binds the pigments together, and strongly influences such properties as gloss potential, exterior durability, flexibility, and toughness.

When polymer chains are linked together extensively by chemical cross linking - the formation of covalent bonds between chains; the polymer is harder and more difficult to melt. Curing is required to allow the monomers (polymer building blocks) to attach to the surface and to polymerize into a crystal-clear, impervious film.

It is very important to allow polymers to cure for 12 hours after the haze has been wiped off. If the coating is exposed to contamination such as oil, rain, water, cleaners, etc. before it has cross-linked, the contaminants may interfere with the film, preventing the polymer from achieving its maximum performance and durability. A polymer, unlike wax forms a molecular bond with paint once it’s had enough time to cross-linking, usually 12 – 24 hour.

A unique aspect of polyurethane chemistry is that the hydrogen bonding acts as an additional crosslink, but also allows thermoplastic flow, which helps the paint surface to retain its elasticity and its tensile strength to relieve mechanical stress. The basic structure of a polyurethane clear coat features a soft segment (polyol or tetramethylene ether) which gives it flexibility and elasticity. There is also a hard segment (polymerization) that has high urethane density, which gives the coating hardness and tensile strength

Carnauba wax

Carnauba in today's wax formulas functions mostly as a carrier; it’s used to keep the polymers and oils on your car's surface. Only a small portion of your vehicle's shine comes from the wax itself. Carnauba is translucent at best with only minimal light reflection. It is among the hardest of natural waxes, being harder than concrete in its pure form. Its major disadvantage is its lack of durability compared to a polymer or nano coating, for this reason its usually used for its aesthetics

This sacrificial barrier is all that stands between the environmental contaminants and the paint film surface and this renewable barrier is probably less than 0.1 ยต (100 nm, 0.000 4 Mils or 0.000 004 inch) thick. An applied paint protection product is the barrier that provides protection for automotive paintwork besides the clear coat paint.

An organic wax also provides a sacrificial surface that will resist acid (salt brine, bird excrement, acidic rain, etc) better than a polymer, which forms a molecular bond with the paint, whereas a an organic wax forms a semi-hard protective shell (although it lacks durability)

Paint Surface Protection

Paints that is subject to ultra violet radiation (UV-B) and environmental contaminant (acid rain industrial fallout, brake and rail dust, road salt brine, etc) exposure leads to gloss and colour instability (photosynthesis or photo-oxidation) and surface stains.

• An organic wax, contrary to popular opinion, or marketing, does not contain natural UV protection; the wax protects the leaves due to its thickness and the fact that it’s opaque. It does however provide a sacrificial surface that will resist acid (salt brine, bird excrement, acidic rain, etc) better than a polymer, which forms a molecular bond with the paint, whereas a an organic wax forms a semi-hard protective shell (although it lacks durability)
• Polymer sealants are resistant to UV-B radiation and offer durable protection for a paint surface.
• Nanotechnology coatings due to something called the Lotus effect offer resistance to dirt as they do not allow adhesion, they are also scratch resistant.

It's after a fresh Mother's clay and World's Best Wax last week and a wash 3 days before. Then she sat out in the pollen for those next 3 days as the sun burned hundreds of tiny orange bugs to a crisp against the black paint. This stuff is keeping the bugs and pollen under control. This was my first time detailing all on my own and had extremely limited equipment and product to work with. I clayed with a Meguiars clay bar and then put this Ardex stuff on it. Then I put a coat of Rejex on it by hand.

This was as halfass as a detail can get, unfortunately. I'll be buying my first detailing products in a couple of paychecks and then I'll do a full detail with a lineup of Adam's products.

He used to work at a place like it. It was basically a crappy used car lot that one of the partners in the bigger dealerships around here made for himself that also do detailing (which is probably the worst detailing work I've ever seen). Its specialized in crappy used cars that he bought from auction with the company money to sell on his lot. If they sell, the money goes in his pocket. If they don't, the whole company writes it off.

Then the cars sold at the dealership I work at (BMW) get driven there for their get-readys once sold. Another $100 bill in his pocket for every car.

The whole company is Porsche/Audi in one location, BMW in another, and Kia/Subaru in another. Then this guy has two of his own crappy used car dealers.

The ZHP has been outside for a couple days while I help my brother clean up/paint his brakes on his S2000.

I use Meguiars Ultimate liquid wax and Rain-X on the glass. Love both of the products.

And speaking of detailing, my new Griot's polisher just arrived, along with a bunch of hex pads from Chemical Brothers. Stoked!

Yes, two coats make it even smoother. And If you use something like a California Waterblade after washing there's like 5 minutes of drying and you're done.

Crappy Iphone pic (and used an Instagram filter to get the water beeds to stand out a bit for clarity, as it's hard to see on AW. )
This is with just ONR wash about 4 months ago, and Sonax Brilliant Shine quick detailer applied about 2 weeks ago. (NO waxing or anything done after that ONR wash 4 months ago.) - Recently just dusted it off with a California duster, and applied Sonax detailer right after that. (Terrible detailing ethics, I know - but I was so curious to see what the Sonax BSQD would do...): for just a QD, I think it did ok...

I wetsanded to reduce some acid etching, micro pitting and orange peel. The car is borderline ridiculously glossy now. I didn't need a finishing polish after m100 on this color. It jewelled up beautifully.

Yes, M100 has more initial cut, less dusting and more work time than M105. The difference is M100 seems to have some diminishing cut and you can work it in for a long time, but after a few passes you lose cutting power. This is nice though as it allows you to finish down better than 105 and I generally find I don't need to do a 205 pass to get great results on most colors.

My old e90 is below. I did a clay bar, Meguiars Ultimate compound polish, and Mequiars NXT job on it.

I have some work to do on the new ZHP soon. Think I am going to just do the EZ-Cream Glaze followed by Blackfire Wet Diamond. The seller already had a claybar/polish done to it before I bought it, so it looks pretty good already.

You want to seal with a polymer sealant like rejex on bare paint, otherwise its durability is only as good as the substrate you applied it to which is that layer of finishing wax. Just in the future I'd recommend applying sealant and wax in the reverse order. Also polymer sealants need cure time. I like to wait 12 hours before topping...though in all honesty, these days I've given up double layering as I get better durability, beading and depth using blackfire wet diamond only. All my other sealants and waxes are dusty.

It's not technically a 'sealant' as in the context of todays products, it's just a wax. I've been using it on my cars for close to 30 years.

Depending on what type of wash agent you use, it'll last a year, but of course beading won't stay like this, it'll degrade with age. Shine stays pretty damn good tho.

All I do is wash every week with No.7 car wash(using that longer than Fleetwax, tested in my detail shop with my regular customers over several years and does not degrade waxes), wipe down with Meguiar's Gold Quick Detailer afterwards.

One key is a second coat after a week or two, works nice, stays nice and smooth. Best way to check smoothness of the surface is to run your nails over the surface, you'll feel more that way as opposed to just using your hand\palm.

I've always applied it with a water dampened bonnet(in AZ I use bottled water cause our water sucks, too much calcium), allow it to set for a minute and buff off several times to assure full removal.

I need to post a picture of my car when it rains next time. I had great results with Sonax Poly net Shield. If it's dirty it won't be a very good representation of the beads, best pix are after a fresh wash. Even a thin layer of dirt will affect how the water lays.

What do you guys think about spray wax vs. paste wax? I'm fairly ignorant when it comes to types of waxes but both seem to provide the silky soft feeling afterwards. Obviously the spray takes 1/8 the time. My ZHP is 11 years old the original owner has NEVER waxed it with traditional (paste) wax, only used the spray kind and it feels/looks fantastic.

I wouldn't use either. A synthetic sealant lasts significantly longer than a standard wax does.
The Menzerna PowerLock sealant I use lasts anywhere between 3-6 months realistically, depending on what season I'm using it in. In the winter, it won't last as long due to all the crap associated with winter driving, but in the nicer weather I still get beading 4,5, sometimes even 6 months later.

A standard wax won't last nearly that long.

i've used zymol wax for years, which is not really either - it's gooey liquid stuff. i've always liked it and get 2-3 months of protection with it.

CQuartz Ceramic coating one year ago. It parks outdoors 99% of the time. Daily drive it and give it washes with running water over the glove when I start to see dirty. I sometimes use the California blade over it when I'm lazy even if the car got freshly rained on. I haven't done anything to the coating since it was professionally applied.

It does cost a bunch but once it's done, maintenance doesn't take much time.

The detailer needed a full day to 2 or 3 step polish the clear coat. Then the next day to apply ceramic and cure. So if have the finances to dump into the finish that'll last minimum of two years, then you will probably make the money back doing productive/priceless things instead of constantly detailing.

Yeah don't do ceramic coating on an uncorrected clearcoat. It needs to be perfect under the ceramic to shine.

Permanent coating is not cheap. The car requires a full paint correction usually then applying the coating and having it bake under lamps.

I have no idea. I buddy who details cars for a living did it. I'm sure whatever the best one is. He has a reputation to uphold and he is flown internationally to do cars! So it can't be second place. [emoji51]
