View Full Version : Interior Rattling

If there's one thing that bugs me, it's something rattling in the interior of a car when driving.

Around 1.5-2k RPMS, there's something on the passenger side, in the rear seat area that buzzes. That's the best way I can describe it.

I don't think it's related to a loose speaker or anything. Speakers aren't blown, and the 'buzz' sound happens despite the radio being on or off.

Could something be loose inside the door panel?

Thanks!:roundel

Yes, entirely possible. I would advise that you have somebody sit in the car with you in the other seats and drive around so they can figure out exactly where the noise is coming from, that way you're not just opening up stuff and chasing the noises. You should have the person that helps you make a list cause there will probably be more than just that one noise.

Rattles and squeaks drives me crazy...

and whats more aggravating is that my wife "cant hear them"...

The description sounds like the buzzing rattle that mine has which is from the front passenger seat belt mechanism. I've have seen a forum post that describes installing a shim to eliminate the noise. I haven't got around to it yet, it's on my long to do list for this car. I thought about just adjusting the mechanism lower to see if that helps.

I just spent a few hours tracking down a rattle in my front passenger door yesterday. Turned out to be the cable for the window actuator banging against the door. I put a bunch of butyl rubber stuff in there while I had the door apart.

Goodluck finding the rattle. I have been very impressed with how solid and rattle free my 7 year old BMW has been since Ive owned it. I figured the horrible San Francisco streets would have made quick work of it. Maybe my car lived an easy life previously.

Ive got a few. I found that a lot of them are in the door panels. Sometimes sliding a little folded piece of paper in between the panel and the metal will stop noises. I would try doing this at the bottom and side of the panel.

Thanks for the replies, guys. How hard of a task is removing the door panel?

Rubber insert...? If I recall, Mine came with a few extra pieces (I have since thrown them away) that I tried to hook up with the mount but nothing seemed to fit so I hooked it up however I could. pics?

Will go take a pic.

Edit: OK, here's the pic. See that rubber insert winged thing behind the main mount? I installed w/o it and it rattled, so I put it in. Should have come with your mount.

If you do it like the way I did, you won't have any rattles:

Thinking any slim rubber insert will do. Off to Home Depot Dane!

EDIT: In fact, you don't need the wings part, just the middle. I should just cut those off.

Probably a piece of Sticky Felt would work.

On a recent road trip I found one of the annoying rattles was my brake pads. Does anybody know off hand where to get the anti rattle clips?

I actually still have that rubber piece for my phone mount and I never knew what it was for. My new phone doesn't fit in the mount I have anymore so I need to get one that is wider. A buddy of mine told me but I can't remember the site that sells the wider mount grip thing.

my rear deck rattles and it drives me nuts. absolutely the #1 day-to-day gripe i have with the car. that, and the spacing of the stop intervals on the coupe doors. takes 3 feet of space to the left before it will open to the first stop.

those are awesome DIYs and much appreciated, but at the end of the day im not going to tear apart my car like that and the labor cost for the shop to do it is way too high. i did try the tennis ball in the trunklid trick and that had no effect for me. pretty sure the rattle is coming from the plastic piece at the end of the deck/bottom of the glass.

I've got one somewhere near my passenger seat, and one in the top-left side of my glovebox, particularly when it's cold.

I have what sounds like a window rattling on the passenger's side B-pillar on certain bumpy or grainy roads. I haven't exactly determined it yet, but part of me wants to take the B-pillar apart and see how tight the rear window bolts are.

Bimmian sells the mounts.

Unfortunately theirs doesn't accommodate anything wider than an iPhone.

GS3 won't fit.

If anybody finds one that works for wider phones I'm in.

Interesting, didn't realize the GS3 was so wide. My Droid4 fits fine, but I lost the inner side cushions so now it pops out. I haven't gotten round to replacing them.
