So......anyway, I don't know how much I can say about this as I don't know how much is in the public domain. But.... I can say it is a low cost "power adder" and I'll know more in 2 weeks :shifty:
Long story short, I know the guys at ESS and their main US office is down here in AZ a few miles away. One of the guys called me up and asked if he could use my car for a few weeks for an "install/test". I said sure, since i travel and my car usually sits at the airport for most days. He said I could keep it + cash after they are done with it.
So this is just a place holder post (or teaser post?) for now.
EDIT: The car goes to the shop on Tuesday afternoon. I will have updates to this thread throughout the next couple of weeks as they do install, pics, testing, modding, dyno, etc....
EDIT 2: I don't have any information yet on Dyno numbers, costs, install timeframe, etc.. As they are building this up and taking pictures, doing the install, dyno testing, tuning, etc.. I will have more information to pass along. I talked to the installer guy and he said all said and done, the entire kit that you see below shouldn't take more than 2-3 hours of install time. When I walked through the kit with the guys, we lined up the bracket and everything and I can see where after removing the air box, it really won't take much time at all to install this system.
EDIT 3: I will have to put my Gruppe M intake up for sale, since I can no longer use it with this kit. :( :) I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing yet

Update:
Tuning is happening now but there was an issue where they didn't like the original hose and intake setup. So they have been playing around with some different setups on the intake. I'm not sure how I feel about this..... the first thing that comes to mind is inadequate, but hopefully that is just me.

haha I don't think it will be a "lite" version. It is a vortech system that they have mentioned will get numbers very close to the twin screw TS 1/2 system that they have.

Maybe peak but you'll never get the low end gains out of a centrifugal supercharger.

Oh i completely agree with you on that one. I even mentioned that to them yesterday. However, due to the fact that a) The manufacturer for the twin screw setup went out of business and ess picked up ALL their stock, so they only have less than 200 units available and then....thats it, twin screws are no more. And b) most lower end systems are using the vortech superchargers now for "cost to dollar bang" (lower end doesn't mean weaker or bad in this case, it is more of a cost per HP type of statement)
ESS can do some phenomenal things with tuning and I think they will be able to pull of some pretty impressive numbers when they are done with this kit. I personally am looking more for the torque numbers than anything else.

:D I LIKEY. The good thing about using a vortech charger is this. https://jonbondperformance.com/ I know they rebuild mostly the muscle car guys vortech chargers but they are the main guys for rebuilding a vortech charger outside of vortech themselves. My buddy is actually rebuilding his Dinan Vortech e36 supercharger with them since Vortech will most likely say its not rebuildable.

"Low cost"
It is priced below the TS1/2 systems that they. By how much? I don't know.......actually I have a really really good idea of the price because we talked about it yesterday, but I won't voice that here (yet). It is not a lowball cost by any stretch but it is a lot lower than their higher end system available right now and listed on their site.

Very interesting, I did not know that. I think 200 is A LOT though for a nearly 10 year old model. Hopefully they got a smoking deal on them and will blow them out at some point. The number of people buying twin screw superchargers that cost roughly 80% of the Blue Book value of the car has got to be pretty tiny.

Self-contained oil system? Check
Oil cooler? uncheck (no)
Intercooler? uncheck (no)
System contains a line that is the drain hose for the oil changing. It is hard to tell on that middle picture but the bubble wrapped thing on the main unit is the oil drain line. You will want/need to change the supercharger oil on each and every time you do a standard oil change on your car, however for better life of the unit, you will want to change it every 5-8K miles. The unit contains the drain line, a dipstick and an oil fill plug.

I think that tuning might come out that there isn't enough airflow. I don't know, i'm just putting that out there as a possibility. I asked him about a number of different filter choices and he even mentioned that I could run the original design like you see in that other pics above, where the intake tube runs really low into the engine bay/fender/bumper area. I don't really like that either due to possible water suction on some semi/deep puddles.
Anyway, the tuning is happening now and i've thrown out some suggestions on filters so between him and I (and us) we can probably come up with a more workable solution. But again, tuning will probably tell us more on whether or not the more larger air requirements of the supercharger is going to need a more robust air filter.

As for the intake that goes down to the bumper. I've been running a custom intake that goes down to my bumper behind the fog lights. I've gone through some scary puddles, that i thought i might have hydrolock my engine. However, thinkg 4-5 years later, I'm still running same CAI with no issues.

Not sure if the whine is that audible. It was one of the installers/sales guy that sent me that video, so i have yet to hear it in person, both inside and outside of the car.
The puff of smoke was from a little oil that was on the exhaust manifold. Evidently, when I did my valve cover gasket after my vanos repair, one of the valve cover bolts broke and I didn't realize it, so a small amount of oil had seeped through. They found it and replaced the bolt but a little bit of oil had gotten on the exhaust, so it was from that.
I am still waiting for the dyno sheets to show up but i'll post those up as soon as I get them. But for the time being, i started at 192 at the wheels and the supercharger added 100HP to the wheels, so 292hp at the wheels. Although they are also going to do drop in some 93 octane fuel (for those outside of AZ that can get higher octane gas) to get the tuning done on that as well, so the HP numbers should go up just a little bit.
I should know pricing here shortly but I think they are waiting to see what the numbers are and the final tweaking on the software side. But as soon as I hear something, i'll update the main posts as well.
They have been doing some drivability tests on it and say that it is very subtle when not on the gas/non-aggressive driving, but opens up very quick when you want the power. I think this is mainly due to the additional lower end torque that this provides more than anything else. I guess there was a semi-annual AZ BMW meet on thursday (I couldn't make it since i was flying back from work at the time) but I guess they brought it to the meet and everyone was pretty impressed with it so far.

Sorry guys, been MIA from the forum for a little while, busy at work :(
I am supposed to pick up the car on Friday and they should have updated Dyno sheets to give me as well as an install guide and (crosses fingers) an updated website. I still don't know cost or availability yet but they really wanted to get it ready to sell by the end of the year.
To answer your question flavo, yes this kit is putting down more power to the wheels than the TS1 kit was doing. This was very surprising and exciting for them as they were expecting closer numbers but this new vortech puts down a lot more power. They have it setup with 9.4lbs of boost with our 91 octane (sadly) that we have here in AZ. If you have better fuel, I am sure you will be able to get slightly better numbers. They did test it with (what we in AZ call) race fuel, which is 93 octane and tuned it for that, but I don't have the dyno numbers for that either yet.

UPDATE ..... Car is back in my hands.
First impressions
Damn dam DAYUM The throttle response on the car now is absolutely INSANE!!!!! I mean, this is what it felt like when I had my M3, there really is absolutely no need to plant my foot down for ANYTHING. Half throttle is more than enough for everyday driving, but I have dropped my foot a few times at 3-4K RPM and it flat out hauls ass.
It is kind of hard to explain the throttle response now but i'll try. If our normal ZHP's have a nice smooth(ish) throttle curve then this supercharger completely snaps it like a rubber band to an almost straight line instead of a curve. But the response is very clean and not sudden jerky at all, it is a very smooth linear response all the way up to the power band. But when i am in our power zone and I give it a little more gas? Watch out!!!! Because now it is completely awake and will both put you in your seat and a couple hundred feet of ground disappear under you in a heartbeat!
Feel free to ask me questions about the kit if you want. I think I can start talking more openly about it now. However, I still don't know exact dollar amounts yet, but I can tell you it will be cheaper than the TS1 kit and it puts down more power than the TS1 kit does as well. When they were tuning and dyno'ing the car, they said the ZHP torque settings are extremely friendly to this kit and that is the reason they were able to get a solid 100RWHP gain out of it. They are very excited about this kit and what it can do. As soon as I can get him to release the dyno sheets, i'll let everyone see. Also, install of this kit on our cars can be accomplished in probably about 3-4 hours tops.

Yeah I've always wondered about running this on higher mileage engines as well. I figure by the time I can afford this I'll have close to 300k on mine (just give me a couple of years :) ) so the plan was to buy one and then rebuild the engine, then slap on the kit. Soooo much $$ though to do all that... [sigh]

Leakdown test would be a first indicator on what state your rings/pistons and valves are in. Similar to a compression test but it determines how much compression is lost not just how much it will build up to.
Others might have further tests but that would be where I'd start.

I'll try to get the exact boost number from the guys this weekend and update you all.
As far as high mileage goes, I am sitting right at 104700 on the clock when I got the car back. So I am relatively (or should I say realistically) high mileage but am on top of maintenance, like most of us are on the board here. In fact, I am pretty anal on my maintenance and do stuff even though it may not need it, like plugs and filters every time I change oil every 4-5K miles. All in all though, I don't think this kit is two things:
1. Aggressive - Could they squeeze more power out of the unit and pull higher numbers to the wheels? Absolutely!!! But what they (ESS) wants it to have a very very easily installed kit that is a very very drivable and user friendly; i.e.: no need for boost gauge or oil coolers
2. Invasive - As with the first point, the kit can be installed in less than 4 hours with minimal changes to the engine bay. All that needs to be removed from stock is the stock (or other ) intake and the injectors replaced with the higher flow ones they send. The system is also very easily disassembled and pulled out if need be. For those of us with ZHP's we will need to send in our ECU's to them to have them program, as of yet (and don't quote me on this one till I can confirm), I don't believe they have a OBDII programmer for this kit.

Once they have filled all that info out for me, I will be putting up an official Review thread on here, E46fanatics, Bimmerforum, etc.... Pics will also be updated on their Facebook page and website as well.
The kit will officially be for sale when I post up the review threads on the internet (i assume since i will be posting up prices)

This is a good question and I really don't know about the DISA valve. I may just need to replace the DISA as I haven't checked it, in about 30K miles. I think there is a more robust DISA valve out there? Or at least I saw a better than stock one. Maybe it was the one on DR Vanos that I was thinking of.

Oh, I didn't know it was a Vortech system (maybe I missed it in an earlier post or forgot).
