new year, new thread

post 'em up...

It's no longer 2012, but here's my first AutoX of 2013, BMW CCA Golden Gate chapter at Marina Airport. No car classifications or points yesterday but they did have timing. My best time was 53.002. Best drivers with similar cars were running around 51. Best BMW M3 drivers (E36 and E46, coilovers, and stickier tires) were running 47 or 48 seconds. This was my best lap.

Gotta love concrete, and the massive understeer that comes with it

OK, same 2013 AutoX but with a slower time. Here's what happens when I use too much throttle in a turn, watch from 52 seconds in.

Hey Derek, I moved up to the Bay Area in June and brought the BMW up in August. Thought I mentioned that in another thread somewhere.

Feel free to critique my line and driving skills, on the first video (where I wasn't sliding the back end like mad). My car should have been able to do a 51-sec run, maybe even 50-seconds, if driven properly.

Initial thoughts from looking at the first video (good run).

0:12 seconds, you end up going way too wide after the slalom, which ends up setting you up poorly for the quick 3 cone lane change. On the exit of that slalom I would hug those cones to the right, and when you approach the cone on the left it's just a quick jerk of the steering wheel right and left. Instead you make a long sweeping turn, which doesn't set you up for the upcoming right sweeper. Not setting up for that right sweeper results in an unbalanced car, and understeer

0:39 seconds, you kinda coast here. I'm still guilty of this, it's a hard habit to break. You should ideally be on the gas hard, up to the point where you trail break to plant the front tires and turn.

0:43 seconds, it looks like that should be a double apex corner. You make it 2 different apexes, breaking the turn in between. Continuing to hold that steering angle completely through is faster than steering, then steering again. You scrub more speed that way.

Hey guys, I'm looking forward to getting involved in similar autox/track events this year, live in NJ though - Anyone here offer up some good ones in the area? I've seen some of the events listed on BMW CCA but not the autox so far.

Cheers.

Look into local SCCA regions for events. They should have them listed

a bit sloppy towards the end, but still enough to take the win in DS.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flGuBPJ_o_c

Car is a 2004 BMW 330CI ZHP 6 speed coupe classed in DS with 245/40/18 Federal 595SS Tires. Time was a 64.583. After reviewing the footage, it's apparent that the back stretch was very very sloppy and could have been cleaned up. The car should have been in the high 62-63.xxx range. Still this was good enough for first place in DS that day.

Hey Derek, I know you're just polishing off your rear end swap, or is it done? When is your next planned track day? There is a BMW CCA AutoX on April 20th at Marina Airport, near Monterey. Also one this Sunday, April 7th, at Candlestick, but it's already sold out.

Damn. Into 3rd quick, then stayed there. What was all the squeeking about?

I went from 1st to 2nd quick off the line to gain torque and eliminate looping it with that off-camber turn...and then stayed there.

The squeaking is from my HP+ pads. It was rather cold (50*F) so brakes and tires never got to temperature. That lead to trouble with power down, and brakes that were loud.

Delaware Valley SCCA Chapter is the one that is closest to me, I'm in South Jersey very close to Philly. I will be sitting this season out though due to my current condition, but I've met quite a few BMW owners that speak very highly of the group.

Car and I survived 2 days at Buttonwillow running 13CCW. My first time running that direction in the dry (ran 1CCW in the wet 1.5 years ago, which is almost the same config). Had two instructors, both drive '88 Mustangs (one races, other does time trial)--both very helpful. I think I got a little faster. Here's a picture of my Saturday instructor in his Mustang.

LivesNearCostco
04-08-2013, 09:23 AM
I did okay, got a little faster but still a slow learner. I am faster than most of the HPDE1 folks but not all. There are a few guys with 1/4th the experience (number of track days) in HPDE 1 or 2 who drive as fast or faster than I do.

NASA packs a tight schedule with HPDE, races, a 3-hour enduro Saturday evening, etc. You can see the weekend schedule here (http://socal.drivenasa.com/SchedBWApril13.pdf). They get people on and off the track very efficiently, but HPDE also gets only 20-minute sessions (one 25-min session on Sunday). Still much less expensive than running with BMW CCA.

Two photos of my car from VanHap, the Track Photographer.

First autox of the season for KC Region was this past Sunday. I'm co-driving a friend's 99 M Coupe again. Words can't describe how fun this car is to drive. The handling is so much more neutral than any other E36 or E46 I've owned.

I'm signed up for April 20th AutoX with Golden Gate CCA at Marina Airport, and contemplating Buttonwillow with Central Cal CCA on Friday June 7th. Or the cheaper Buttonwillow option that doesn't require taking a vacation day is NASA at Buttonwillow June 1-2. Maybe if I don't have to work our company's user conference in early May, I could do AutoClub Speedway and/or Willow Springs May 3/4/5 with CCA Los Angeles and/or SpeedVentures and/or NASA. My daughter's spring volleyball season just started so it's a little harder to get away on Saturdays until her season is over.

What's your next track day, Thunderhill or Sears Point? NASA or TrackMasters? NASA is at Thunderhill this weekend and May 18-19, then at Sonoma June 15-16.

I attended VCMC's Velocity 1 school last Saturday. The format is 3 runs in the morning to set a baseline, 3 different exercises during the middle of the day to build skills (sweeper, G circle and slalom), and then 5 runs at the end of the day to see if you've learned anything.

Here's my first run of the day, a slow 40.355:

http://youtu.be/c02CX4VOgyo

For my second run of the day, I let my instructor drive my car to show me what it was capable of. He ran a 33.3XX.

http://youtu.be/ZSIg-fBBF8o

Here's a couple of vids from the G circle exercise. First clockwise:

http://youtu.be/e99tMvTiXBo

And then counterclockwise:

http://youtu.be/QlN65oxo3nY

Here's my 2nd best run from the afternoon, a much improved 34.146:

http://youtu.be/QlN65oxo3nY

I ran a 33.051 on my last run of the day, beating my instructor's time in my car. Unfortunately, my GoPro battery ran out before then, so I don't have video of my best run. :mad

On raw times this run put me 11th out of 30 students. On indexed times, it put me 6th out of 30 students, so I'm pretty pleased with that. :rockon

Funny enough, 5th place on indexed times was another 330i driver (non-ZHP) who beat me by 0.025 seconds.

Was going to do Thunderhill with NASA on May 19th (while y'all are partying at Dane's house) but have just changed that to attend a friend's funeral the Friday before.

Now planning on Buttonwillow Friday June 7th with BMW CCA. Then either Sat/Sun June 1-2 with NASA at Buttonwillow or Friday May 24th at Sonoma Raceway with Trackmasters/SpeedVentures. Any of you California folks thinking of going? Derbo? Hermes?

Oktoberfest still seems to have a few open slots for the Saturday driving school. Or you can take a group tour to Hearst Castle.

Am so tempted to do Trackmaster/SpeedVentures at Sonoma this Friday. Have never driven Sonoma. But it appears to be beyond the May budget, and I'd have to take another vacation day (took one last week, taking another one on June 7th). Instead, looking at June 15-16, either with the Alfa Romeo Club of So Cal at Buttonwillow or NASA at Sonoma (Sears Point/Infineon).

Has anyone run with the Alfa Romeo Club of Southern California?

OK, no Sonoma tomorrow, but I signed up for a 2nd track day at Laguna Seca during Bimmerfest. There were 12 spots left for the Saturday driving school as of Monday night. So good news is I'll get 2 consecutive days with instruction at Laguna. Bad news is I pay for it now, don't get to enjoy it until late August.

AutoX this Saturday at Marina airport with CCA. Event is full, but I heard Porsche Club (Loma Prieta Chapter) is looking for more autocrossers to drive in the same place on Sunday. With Memorial Day they probably had too many regulars gone for the weekend.

I short shifted around 5k right before I started my first right turn, it would of been a huge mess if I tried to hold first gear any longer and would of kicked out the rear end.

At the end of the "straight" into the quick right hander before the chicago box, as they like to call it (because it looks like a C), I was doing around 55-60 MPH. Just based on exhaust note...I was cooking it pretty hard through that section.

Funny note, you can see some nice tire marks going into that chicago box...that is what happens when your brakes are a bit too grabby and you lock up the wheels. This is what it looks like when you see the picture...whoops

I've got some cone marks from event 2. I need to figure out how to get rid of them. Normally I'm anal about my car, but cone marks are a bit like battle scars, so I'm just a little bit proud of them. :-)

That first section looks fast. If I may offer some advice... one of the things they taught at autocross school was to shuffle your hands on the steering wheel rather than cross them over as I noticed in your video. It's hard to be precise when your hands are all crossed up, and you have less strength in that position. (EDIT - Checked my own video and noticed I wasn't shuffling! :-) Add that to my list of things to work on for the next event.)

I think I need to figure out how to tune my tire pressures. I was running 40psi front and back. Car was pushing, so the tire gods say to increase front pressure or to lower rear. Gonna try lowering the rears to 38 or 39 next time. That will affect the relative balance.

What I'd like to figure out is if 40 psi in the front is right or not from an absolute perspective, and then adjust the rears for relative balance. Any tips on how to tune the front pressures to their optimum?

I don't know who told you to shuffle hands, but i've never heard of the same, and the same applies to track. Shuffling hands just equals poor inputs and you have a difficult time trying to be constant in long sweepers, slaloms...etc. I've been able to transition better from eliminating shuffling. It has also been easier to recover from oversteer.

Here is Andrew Pallotta, multiple time national champion co-driving a Corvette in SS

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Y9E1I-zVOA&feature=youtu.be

I do agree certain places where you need to shuffle on a tight corner, but I didn't see any benefit.

For tire pressures, you need to mark your tires. Assuming that you have arrows to indicate rollover.

I mark my tires with chalk

https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/1040195_10200466308688478_1819604867_o.jpg

The RS3s have arrows which indicate rollover, and you should be at the arrows, which would tell you if you have enough pressure, too much pressure...etc.

Now this event was kinda weird, because I went to my lowest pressures I've ever been at. I just flipped my tires to fresh outside shoulders, so I ended up running 34 front PSI and 31 rear PSI (Usual pressures can be around 36 front, 34 rear). I can take close up pictures of said arrows if you need to see those.

Conventional wisdom would say to lower the rear pressures in your case, but by doing so you're going to be adding more grip in the rear, and push more in the front as a result of the added grip. It is really a law of diminishing returns, as in stock classes with limited camber you can't do too much. Most likely you're running some toe in on the front tires, which isn't helping the solution.

I would check the rollover on the tires and go from there. I've set my car up to become throttle oversteer happy, and actually just added more toe in on the rear tires to keep it a bit more planted. IF I do encounter understeer I usually just get on the throttle sooner to get the rear to start and rotate, that is how i've attacked the situation.

I do agree certain places where you need to shuffle on a tight corner, but I didn't see any benefit.

For tire pressures, you need to mark your tires. Assuming that you have arrows to indicate rollover.

Conventional wisdom would say to lower the rear pressures in your case, but by doing so you're going to be adding more grip in the rear, and push more in the front as a result of the added grip.

Agreed. Shuffling isn't for every corner, just the tighter ones. I noticed your hands pretty crossed over at one point which is why I mentioned it.

I've got Bridgestone Potenza RE050A PP's in the front (S04 PP's in the back) which do have the ^ rollover marks. I'll chalk my tires next time and see what happens. Guess this means I'll have to bring an air compressor so I can increase pressures if need be.

You mean the conventional wisdom does not work on our cars? I was thinking of lowering rear pressures based on Tire Rack's guide (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=58).

You likely won't be able to work out understeer with tire pressure. That will take tweaking to rebound, springrate, sways, etc. Generally set the front as low as you can go without destroying the shoulder of your tire (as determined by wear marks or chalk) that still provides you with good turn in and quick times (play around and see if you gain/lose time by adding/dropping pressure). You can go too low, but not likely with the amount of neg. camber you're running. Then, adjust the rears to season-to-taste the oversteer. Generally, more pressure in the back means less grip, means more oversteer.

Never ran on concrete with RS3s, so I over pressurized the tires and decided to become an understeer king. Yesterday was limited registration, with only top drivers running. Stiff competition.

Results from yesterday:

#2/6 RTR
#20/60 in PAX

Today I dropped a ton of pressure with the help from my co-driver. I had my co-driver take his runs first, while I would finish them (instead of swapping back and forth). Course was damp in the AM and was drying up, which I thought by the time I ran I would be dry. Well my first run was dry, followed by 3 wet runs. Kinda sucked but showed I can have a decent result with 1 good run. I was the 5th fastest in Heat 1 Group (which consisted of 40 cars). Considering most got at least 2-3 dry runs...i'll take it

Results from today:

#3/25 RTR
#28/164 PAX

Codriver was:

#2/25 RTR
#21/164 PAX

Videos and photos to follow tomorrow.

Ran a regular season event on Jul 6th. Tried having the Go-Pro on the left side in the morning and the right side in the afternoon so I could see how close I was getting to the cones. Interestingly, I'm closer on the right side than I am on the left. Finished 6th again in the novice class, but a smaller field of competitors this time, so it felt like I was moving backwards. That said, it was mostly the same guys in front of me as the last time. It was a technical course and I never really got the feel for it. Hopefully the next course is different.

Tried chalking the tires and playing with tire pressures. I was up at 48 psi and still getting rollover.

-----

This past Sunday, I attended the Porsche club's event to get some extra practice. They are a more casual club, so they just track raw times. No pax multipliers here. Finished 20 of 41 cars, but when I look at some the cars finishing ahead of me (1 boxter and 4 911's only beat my raw time by 1.2 seconds or less) I know I would beat them on pax. I mean what's the pax multiplier on an Ultima GTR anyways? :-)

Results Sheet (http://www.pca-cwr.org/forums/official-pca-events-and-issues/scoresheet-from-july-14-2013/)

Not believing what the chalk from the last event was telling me, I bought some white shoe polish to mark the tires. Same deal, I had the tires up at 48 psi and was still rolling over a bit.

Here's my fastest run:

Stewbie, I suspect a stock ZHP is going to roll tires onto part of the sidewall in hard-driving Autocross no matter what pressures you use. The harder you corner (and the better your tires grip) the more the car will roll, giving the outside front tire less negative (more positive) camber. The way to fix this is more negative camber, more roll resistance, or both. Have you tried knocking out the alignment pins in the strut mounts and getting as much camber as possible? I think I got up to -1.3° that way. You can also get stiffer springs and/or stiffer anti-roll bars. (Edit: Or camber plates, if that doesn't take you to a class you don't like.)

Lowering the car with stiffer springs or coilovers should help up to a point by lowering the center of gravity, though they say on the Internet that lowering too much without a roll center correction kit makes the roll problem worse.

Other than that, some tires have stiffer sidewalls than other. I think the Dunlop Star Specs are reputed to have stiffer sidewalls than most tires.

M0nk3y
07-16-2013, 03:39 AM
The question is how much rollover? Are you rolling over to the extent where you're on the sidewall? I'd doubt that.

Rollover is perfectly fine, you just need to control how much via pressures. On higher performance tires, there are arrows which where the rollover "should" be.

http://www.trackhq.com/forums/attachments/f296/5064d1351591398t-hankook-rs3-hot-tire-pressure-recommendation-30-psi-7897217222_b4109828ec_z.jpg

Now I say "should" be, because that always isn't the answer. My fronts actually roll past the arrows, and my rears rollover right on the arrows. As you can see, this person isn't getting enough rollover, and should probably drop some pressure to increase grip.

With that amount of pressure you're running, I'd suspect rollover is non-existent. You need to drop those pressures IMO. I don't know what tires you are running, so the pressures will vary a bit.

Just as a small, unimportant reference, I'm running 30 PSI on my front tires and 27 PSI in the rear. And when I'm in a corner this is what it looks like:

Look at the left front tire. The top of the wheel and then the bottom of the wheel. Pretty cool huh?

I should have taken pictures on Sunday, but here's what's left today.

Tires are Bridgestone Potenza RE-O50A PP's in the front and S-04 PP's in the back. 255's all around.

Note that it was a counter clockwise course, with a counter clockwise crossover in the middle, so I was putting a more pressure on the right side tires as they were doing more work. I started with 42 psi cold all-around and brought 3 gallons of air with me.

Left front - This looks about right. I think I brought pressures up to 46 psi hot.:

How stiff is that sidewall? Usually on a stiffer sidewall the rollover is usually uniform even with a wide variation of pressures. I still say drop them and see what happens.

The arrows are for a reference, not a golden rule. I roll my front tires past the arrows about 2/3rds of the way.

As well, those front tires don't look like much uniform wear, much more the tires are skipping and the rollover is being "faked". When I mean that, the tires could be skipping, gripping with a quick rollover and resulting back to full-sidewall. You shouldn't see a wear pattern like that with groves. It should be the same as the rest of the tire.

Stewbie
07-16-2013, 07:36 PM
I'm not sure how to determine sidewall stiffness. I see conflicting reports from Google searches as to whether load rating is an indicator or not. What am I looking for?

When you say skipping, are you referring to what the Lada did before Top Gear handed it over to Lotus to tune the suspension:

http://paultan.org/2005/07/21/a-lotus-lada/

Amazingly, this segment isn't on YouTube. This was the only place I could find it on the web. The pre-tune test is from ~ 1:30 to 2:00 in the video.

Wouldn't you feel this in the car? The car felt smooth as silk. In particular, going round the last sweeper before the final slalom, it felt like it was right on the knife edge of maximum grip (i.e slipping ever so slightly).

OKAY!

Sorry for the delay, but here is what I got:

(0:09) The first section off the start. Don't approach that like and arc...hit it with a straight line and just do a quick shimmy of the wheel to get the car through. You should be able to lift the throttle with little brake and get the car through it seems.

Because you take it like and arc, you end up wide left for that next pointer cone...if you attack it straight, you'll set up perfectly for that next cone. It isn't the end of the world going a bit wide, but you'll still end up pointed in the direction you need to go a lot sooner with a direct attack

(0:16) Personal preference here, but I would of done a late apex and be able to end up wide and set-up for this next turn @ (0:19)

(0:20) You end up going a bit wide here, which ends up having that right cone come into play. You need to lift and take away your momentum because you're going to hit it. If you took a late apex here, and sort of aimed directly at that right cone (this would be easily done by setting up wide for this turn) you would of set up perfect for the following left hander @ (0:22)

(0:45) I'd again set the car up a bit more wide and take this up coming turn like a straight. That way you don't need to shimmy around the wall of cones to your left...you can just blow right by them (PS - I don't like those cars there)

(0:54) You could treat this as a double apex. You seem to go a bit wide to carry speed...it all depends how you set the turn up but IMO I don't think this is bad

(1:03) That pointer cone to the right is suckering you in. And you fell for it. You should track out to the pointer cone on the left up here, and go dead straight towards the slalom. Instead, you leak to the right side pointer cone and you end up entering the slalom at an angle, which kills your speed.

(1:08) You got suckered out again by this right side pointer cone. Stick left! There is no need to be this wide. You enter the next slalom section at an angle again, killing speed. Hitting this whole section should be a straight line.

(1:13) You start turning here which ends up for a slow finish. Track out wider left, IMO and attack this upcoming turn like a straight. Apex LATE

(1:15) You realize you turned too far right and need to correct to the left. There is ample room to attack these 2 walls as a straight line. You'll finish on the left side of the finish (and probably end up in that dirt section...which is a shitty finish design)

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need clarification

Hopefully I'll be able to get back on the track next year at either Road Atlanta or or Barber Motorsports Park, now the closest tracks. With the ZHP out of the daily driver routine, it should make it a no brainer.

You also need to spend some time at Nelson Ledges, the facilities and track are not as nice as Mid-Ohio but, the track layout is great. I've been told is the fastest in the circuit and I think its a blast.

Unfortunately I have not ran the club course with the bus stop. Personally I would like it better. It gets kinda boring on that front straight.

The car is a tank in 3rd, there was probably more speed I could harness in the turns (you could here a little squealing from the tires) but yea does pull decently hard. The thing that impressed me the most is that it was hunting down EVO X cars like no big deal. The Evo would power out of the turn, but once I got past 6k in 3rd I slowly closed in and by the time I was out of 4th into 5th I was right up behind them again.

I think my next track day would be Putnam Park in IL. I would like to spend time with Nelsons, but I'm scared of that pavement. It has progressively gotten worse, IMO.

I might head down to Road Atlanta or Barber next year. We will see.

That rough pavement has its advantages; going down the back straight there is a fair size dip before you get to the carousel. Full out till you feel it, then hard brake for the 90 deg left, works every time.

Very true.

Until they fix the run-off areas, I dunno if that is a safe bet for me to go run. I know someone who lost brakes and had no where to run off and ended up on the tires.

Rivals look promising, but don't know how they do on higher HP cars. Next year I'm going to sell off a set of wheels and run my autocross/ track tires all the time. The rivals don't look like good wet weather tires, which does really concern me

Last event of the season tomorrow and the forecast is for rain. This will be my first wet event. Should I be doing anything different with tire pressures for the wet? Ross Bentley says lower them slightly, unless its really wet in which case go higher to create a crown which resists hydroplaning.

If you have double adjustable dampers, reduce bump settings and possibly also reduce rebound. If you're willing to adjust swaybars, make them slighty softer (or so I hear, as I just got adjustable swaybars and haven't had a wet track day or AutoX for 6 or 8 months). Be smoother with the steering and throttle inputs.

I've always raised pressures if it was wet.
Helps make a bigger footprint so to speak, for tires to help channel water and get more tread on the ground.

If you have anything adjustable, soften it up

Thanks guys. Stock suspension, so other than the tire pressures, nothings adjustable.

Fastest run today:

Very fast course. Hit the limiter in 2nd gear, which is 69 mph. You can hear where I hit it

Lol thanks. I actually had a 50.848 on my 3rd heat which is 0.005 seconds slower than the video above, my 5th heat.

So I don't know if the announcer was looking at my previous runs, but it wasn't much faster ;)

Looks like Kyle had better weather for his event today than I did for mine. The morning was rain, and the afternoon was a wet but drying track.

Here's my fastest run of the day, which also happens to be the fastest novice run of the day. For the last event, the club held the "Beat the President" Challenge for the novices, and I took first place! Still waiting for full results for the day to be posted to see how I did in my class and on overall PAX.

Looks like a solid run, smooth inputs is very important, especially on wet.

Toledo Express Airport. The same venue where the ProSolo is hosted every year

Thanks!

The final results are in. 1st in the novice group. 4th of 68 on PAX for the event overall. I'll have to wait a few more days for the points spreadsheet to be updated to see if 1st was enough to move me up from 4th place to 3rd place in the novice championship.

I'm trying to figure out why I was so much more competitive in the wet than I have been in the dry. Is my driving style more suited to the wet? The only thing I've done to the car between this event and the previous one was to flush the brakes with Motul 5.1, replace the lower intake boot, and a 4 wheel alignment. The alignment may have helped a bit, but it wasn't grossly out of spec.

Probably you're a more lower HP car that can put power down in the wet. What class were you registered as?

I'm classed as D Stock. This class includes Integra Type R's, pretty much all 3 series, V6 5th gen Camaros, V6 Mustangs, Genesis Coupes, Infiniti G35/37, various Minis, to name a few.

Yea but you're running RTR as D Stock, which means you have a real soft PAX

You forgot your main competitor, the Impreza WRX

There was some discussion on this after the event, whether the RT guys had an advantage in the wet because of the RT PAX modifier. As somebody pointed out, an ST car won the event and there were 6 ST cars in the top 12. They seemed to do all right without the modifier.

Points have been updated. Winning the last event was enough to finish the season in third place in the novice championship!

Next year will be tougher as I leave the novice pool and swim with the sharks. Should be fun!

^Good luck tomorrow!

I forgot to bring the GoPro but pics from last autocross were posted today, I placed third in class but I think I should have taken first. I was running 6cyl stock, the guy who got first was running R-Comps so he should have been bumped to mod, and the guy that took second was in a F30 328 so he should have been in either Turbo Stock or 4cyl. Anyways, here are pics:

oh, and this is my buddy's M50 swapped E21... Matt's car is soo much fun!

My touring. Any recommendations on a starter helmet?

http://www.saferacer.com/zamp-racing-fsa-2-sa2010-auto-racing-helmet

This looks appealing to me, and the reviews look solid.

Not comfortable enough with Dad's car, I have only driven it a handful of times.. haha

Not sure about that one but it should work. I personally am planning on buying a Bell this Christmas because I find them the most comfortable for my head shape

Have you checked to see if they have helmets for rent where you're going? If they do, just do that until you find one that you feel comfortable wearing.

I heard that Zamp is mfg'd by Bell but I'm not 100% sure..

I might rent, that is a good idea.

Guys, are the AutoX rules as strict with helmet Snell ratings as the high performance driving schools? I haven't autocrossed in years and was just curious.

From what I know, yes but not as strict. Track days usually seem to require the newest Snell (2010 at the moment), but some autocross will let you get away with the last two (2005 or 2010)

SCCA allows 15 years IIRC, so M2000 is still allowed.

Depending on what organization you track with, SA helmets are usually required. Every event I've went to, helmets are one of the first thing checked.

Hi run Stewbie! Where was this at? Port Moody? or Boundary bay? I used to live in Vancouver (Richmond to be more specific) and did a few auto-x days at Boundary Bay on my, then, DSM.

Question for all you guys running autocross; how are you running your DSC? I ran it all three ways today and it was like driving three different cars.

I turn it off all the way so it doesn't kick in and mess me up

Thanks, I need to try that. Turned it completely for my last run and ended up over correcting, loosing it into the cones. I was very surprised as my RE11s rarely kick out even on hard pushing.

I'm either all on, or all off. (My all on acts like M-Track Mode).

Anyways, I have it turned off all the time. Only time it is on, is when I'm on the track and it is wet.

Turning it off will help you rotate the car around with throttle and help the car track-out without robbing power.
