Might as well replace all your bushings (if you haven't done this already) while you're there Tony :thumbsup

I will be replacing the bushings

so did you buy this donor?

I didn't purchase it. It was on Craigslist and I only inquired about the lcm as hoping it had the 4.0 or 4.5. Eventually in 2 weeks I got this great deal to do the project.

Tony,

No need to drop the subframe to replace the RSM's.

It's easier ;)

If you stare at that subframe you can tell its a little "different" :)

Sweet, where did you buy this, copart.com?

Someone else is parting it.

Dude that M diff/subframe is going to be sweet! Congrats on the work.

Sure will be with the ///M brakes too

Jealous you got the front brakes to pull apart at your disposal too.

Did you remove the abs sensors as well?

Yep pulled everything and it should be a easy swap once I replace all the bushings at the same time.

No I don't have the funds for the S54. I would rather super charge the ZHP rather then doing a engine swap.

Thank you but only 1/3 of the work is done for now. I still have to drop my rear and have it reinforce. Replace all the bushings and then swap in the subframe and brakes. So lots of work left and probably won't get to it till June.

looks great, tony. good call on getting the entire M3 rear end.

how are you reinforcing the rear floor? i'm going to do the foam fill, it makes the most sense to me (assuming i have no cracks larger than 20mm), and also install poly rear subframe/diff mounts as well (also makes sense, to better distribute the load).

Subframe reinforcement from tuner and welding. I probably will just do oem rubber for comfort.

I'm comparing two subframe reinforcement kits right now. One from tunermotorsport which seems like the overall recommended one. The other is from AKG since everyone has been talking about their bushings and stuff.

http://www.turnermotorsport.com/image/suspension/TDR4675412_E46_rear_chassis_reinforcement_kit_subf rame_mouting_m3_330_325_328_323.jpg (http://www.turnermotorsport.com/showproduct.aspx?ProductID=91&SEName=e46-rear-chassissubframe-reinforcement-kit)

http://www.akgmotorsport.com/catalog/images/RSR46lg.jpg (http://www.akgmotorsport.com/catalog/catalog.php?category=e46%20Chassis%20Reinforcement )

Overall they both seem pretty well made. Does anyone got any other recommendations for a subframe reinforcement? I am planning to get all this done probably around June time.

Hornung418

AKG. And you should look up the foam fix as well. It can be found on e46f with JeppeJ's name on it.

yep, in my mind the plates are only a temporary fix - if you examine the cutaways some folks have done of the rear floor assembly you'll see that plates alone do not seem like the best fix. filling with the BMW non-expanding foam, assuming your spot welds are still intact, seems like the best solution.

Alright I'll have to see how my car is after grinding down the paint to see if there are any cracks or anything. Last year when I dropped it there was nothing but I also been traveling to New York a good amount of times so I'm sure there may be something this time around. Time will tell once I get everything apart. I'll have to ask my parts guys to get the foam to do all that at the same time. Man I can't believe that it only has been a year and I'm on the path to do the lsd and brakes (non-zcp). Thanks again everyone and Derek for providing me info on the install/parts needed.

Tnhl1989
04-30-2014, 06:10 AM
I'm thinking that the whole install will be happening around June. I have to gather my funds and get all the parts. Prepping the subframe is key so it will be a easy swap over. Currently looking into akg subframe mounts, m3 rear trailing arm bushings and oem front diff bushing with possible akg diff rear bushings. Along with that I'll be using the tunermotorsport subframe reinforcement and getting everything else needed to weld up everything. Does anyone have any insight on what I need to spray over the subframe after the welding is all done?

Hornung418
04-30-2014, 08:29 AM
Its called a seam sealant. Just seals the welds so they don't corrode.

Plans for this Sunday includes swapping over to the ///M front spindles with calipers along with the Z4M FCABs. Changing out the sway bar and reinforcement plate as well.

Hopefully get some tools to push out some of the bushings for the rear subframe while we are at it.

Few good updates over this past week. I was able to source set of AL headlights and also swap in my ZKW lens as well. It would seem to me that my driver side headlight is not adjusting level when I turned it on though. I'm not sure if I connected something in correctly or whatnot. Either way the light output is super amazing compared to the burnt ZKW headlights I had prior. Thank you Joop for the detailed youtube videos on disassembly and Charlie for guidance and photos as well. It was quite a easy swap after watching Joop's video a few times.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaQfWLe528U

Secondly I rewired up my GPS antenna behind the cluster. There is a perfect spot right behind the cluster for any receiving device. I would suggest that spot for anyone interested in adding GPS or Sirius. It doesn't seem to affect the reception to anything.

Third I was able to get my windshield replace with a pilkington with the rain sensor. I'll have to double check to make sure that it's functioning properly and coded correctly.

Day finished after getting windshield replaced.

So this past weekend I successfully converted my front end to the m3 front end. After a previous weekend not realizing all the parts I needed to do in the first place. Anyways following kalim's swap here http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showpost.php?p=14272323 it was pretty easy along with Derek's help. The swap was very similar to Kalim's. Needed was tierods, spindles, calipers, and rotors. It really gave the front of the car a wider track. From www.bmwpkod.com/Media/Default/documents/2003-04_fastfacts.pdf states that the track of a standard 330i is front/rear 57.9/58.4 and the m3 is 59.4/60. In all it added a whole 1.5 inches to the front end and really makes it flush.

Overall happy with the way the brakes and everything turned out. There is a pretty big difference with the braking force from the new setup. The only thing left is to go with the ZCP route.

It is. The rear provides LSD, the front allows you to go ZCP rotors. :)

Tnhl1989
05-26-2014, 08:44 AM
I think overall it is worth it since it would be more cost effective to go zcp over a big brake kit later on. Plus the pads and rotors were recently changed on the m3 before so there is so much life yet before I even consider to do the Zcp route. In the mean time I'll keep my eyes out for some brackets as well.

So probably when I come back next week the plan is to do the m3 mirrors drill base so at least I will have the mirrors on the car. Already got the m3 mirrors painted and just need to modify it a bit to get everything to all line up.

Secondly I'm considering a set of M parallels for rims. Any suggestions on how to get them to fit correctly on the zhp? I know the offset is a tad different as well and pretty aggressive overall. Looking to hear feedback from all. Thanks!

Considering you now have an M3 front setup, you are a lot more limited in your wheel choices because of the offsets...
I don't think you'll be able to get them to fit. :dunno

What exactly is the offset on the M-Pars? I know they're low, extremely aggressive for E46's even in stock form...

MPars are ET13 Front and ET25 Rear. I'd say that's a tough fit, running aggressive camber and fender work. There are better wheels out there, Tony.

You also need hub converters as the E39 ones are 74mm?

There are few versions of the M parallels but their fitment is very aggressive for a Non-M sedan.

Your new M stance really limited your selection of wheels. Short of getting wider fenders (or reverting to your prior setup), unfortunately it isn't going to happen.

i had 7' snowbanks lining my 150' driveway last year... which was a crazy year, but where i grew up in VT, we'd get a foot of snow overnight and school would still be on for the next day. whereas where i was born in CT, school gets closed after a few inches. :)

Talked to the seller a bit to see why he didn't sell them yet and it was because a lot of people wanted it shipped. Three hours down and up and two hours in the shop to get it installed. Used the lift at work and just hand tools. Would've been quicker if I was using the power tools. Loving the sound it makes and I can't keep my foot off the pedal anymore. Now I know why everyone is getting the exhaust. Installed at 141265 miles.

Well, it means you have to hack somewhere on the UUC or a exhaust manifold to get it to bolt on..

There is no PDC button for the E46. PDC equipped cars have it on permanently with no option to silence it.

Not really too hard. Would just need to figure out the setup and wiring for the PB. However I am already happy and won't have room for the pb retrofit if that ever happens since I'm doing the pdc button.

I'm looking for a front pdc setup as well to add to this.

Replaced my ball joints and lower control arms yesterday with Turner Motorsport adjustable ones. I didn't have the BMW tool to remove the ball joint so I tried to make a few different things that didn't work and broke. Reason for the change was because a tow truck person strapped the hooks around the control arms instead of the tow hook like I put on for her.

That totally didn't work and I spent a about 4-5 hours on it till my buddy said he just hammered it out.

20389

So that's pretty much what I did. Had a friend stopped by to give me a hand and it was done in a matter of two hours. Should've had someone there in the first place to give me a hand it would've been so much easier.

Just use a 4 pound hammer and a socket.

Not for a alignment and I'm almost all set!

Guess the suspension work and rear end work really threw my alignment out a lot. Glad it's all fixed now :)

Yeah I still can't believe I only had the Zhp for three years. I do have to say thank you to everyone on the forums for making it happen for me. I really couldn't manage owning a car like this without all your help. To me the Zhp will always live in my heart and if anyone has any questions feel free to reach out. The f80 is a amazing work of art however the way I had my Zhp setup was just a like a little pup with a nasty bite. The f80 just mature it to a full wolf which was a wonderful upgrade. Cheers to all and Merry Christmas.

You know I would just code out the washers however BMW is covering the washer fluid. One of the perk for working at BMW.

Yeah I keep forgetting how easy it is to go from 60 to 100 on this car.

Of course I will try. Not much to report on this car since I won't be modding it much.

No, I am leasing it currently as it was a great deal and it made sense to me because I was waiting for figures on a m2. If the numbers make sense for that I can get out of this car early and into that however I don't think it will since the residual value on the m3 (four door) kills the 2 and 4 series.

Congrats Tony!! Sweet looking M3!! [emoji106][emoji106]
