This last pic shows how the offsets look. I had a set of 10mm spacers on the back, but I've removed them to verify good fitment and also do a little more fender rolling. Then I will refit them and post more pics...

Jon you've made this car look incredible. Those wheels with the spacers and drop look awesome! Great lighting for the photos too because you can tell the paint has been cared for and just looks like it has depth. You have my favorite AW car on the forum. Nothing against the others, but the AW with sedan trim just makes my mouth water.

The alpine white with brown interior is probably tied for my favorite BMW color combo with jet black with brown.

Haha, well, the long format of that story is that my original ZHP was a true AW/NB sedan... But, sadly, I totaled it and now have this car, which originally had black leather. I managed to save the NB interior from my last car (swapped in some black, non sport leather)...

Anyway, this is my favorite combo, so thanks. Black with NB would look good too, but no thanks trying to keep a black car clean...

Alright, so the latest update was a set of brakes... I did all of the basics with a few extras as well. Initial reactions are great. The brakes are quiet and even after the whole weekend at Sebring, I have very little dust. The pedal was really firm, but after I did the bedding process of the pads, the pedal is a little soft. I think I need to bleed them again, and then I should be good to go. Overall though, really happy with them! Specs as follows.

Stoptech/Centric cross drilled rotors
Stoptech Ultimate Street pads
Stoptech stainless braided lines
New front calipers
New caliper clips (for that shiny look!)
Turner Motorsport Brass Caliper Bushing Upgrade Kit

Step 1: Remove all the old parts... Thoroughly clean the hub, a very light film of never seize and install the new rotors.
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k166/jdinisio/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/Brakes%20Install/IMG_2271.jpg (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/jdinisio/media/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/Brakes%20Install/IMG_2271.jpg.html)

Step 2: Clean up and paint the calipers... Mostly for aesthetics, but also makes cleaning them easier, and gives them a great look.
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k166/jdinisio/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/Brakes%20Install/IMG_2272.jpg (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/jdinisio/media/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/Brakes%20Install/IMG_2272.jpg.html)

Step 3: Fit the brass bushings. Such a nice product!
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k166/jdinisio/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/Brakes%20Install/IMG_2273.jpg (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/jdinisio/media/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/Brakes%20Install/IMG_2273.jpg.html)

Step 4: Put the calipers back on, don't scratch the paint!
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k166/jdinisio/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/Brakes%20Install/IMG_2274.jpg (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/jdinisio/media/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/Brakes%20Install/IMG_2274.jpg.html)

Step 5: Install the stainless brake lines and bleed the brakes. Then install the wear sensors and caliper spring clips.
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k166/jdinisio/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/Brakes%20Install/IMG_2275.jpg (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/jdinisio/media/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/Brakes%20Install/IMG_2275.jpg.html)

Step 6: Put the wheels back on and admire the much improved look!

The rotors are designated left and right. The holes on the rotor face and not "directional" to the point where it matters. The important part is the cooling vanes between the two rotor faces. That being said, the front rotors on our cars have radial cooling vanes (which means they are straight from the center outward). The rear rotors on the other hand have direction cooling vanes, and they are such that when rotating in the forward direction, the vanes will curve from the center, outwards. There are pics online, or I can explain more if you need.

Well, they were a pretty snug fit on their own, the snap ring is just there in case they slide towards that end. But, no, there won't be any force loading on the snap ring...

Thanks so much Eric... I honestly have been sidetracked lately, so I haven't had a chance to do any more mods, but I will get on my project this week and hopefully have updates very soon...

Time to BUMP this thread... I haven't seen my car in 2 and a half months, I miss her... Besides, I figured it was time to drop a teaser pic of the secret project I've been working on for months now....

So, here you go... :rofl More pics will come as I get closer to completion. I will be home in 10 days where I can do some REAL work on the project to get it done, and then I'll do a full reveal.

You guys are terrible... Dane, just trying to have fun with the fact that I don't want to reveal it until finished... But unfortunately, other stuff has gotten in the way and I haven't had ANY time to work on the project.

To be completely honest, I feel that its way less cool than the hype it has been given. Its a pretty neat mod, and one that I'm proud of... I just hope it all works out like I hope it will... I've actually installed part of it already, but if I showed a pic, it'd give everything away...

So, be patient, and let me suffer from WCOS as Dane likes to call it... :facepalm :biggrin

Well, I finally have an update for this thread! Of course, no pics, so really not that exciting... BUT, I managed to pick up a 3.46 rear differential from a local source, so I changed the seals, swapped the flanges, and filled it with fresh Redline 75W90 gear oil... The thing is buttery smooth, quiet, and seems to be in great condition. And the new ratio really woke the car up. Definitely feels a lot snappier, and it seems to pull harder in the top end of the rev range. Of course, the car isn't any faster, but the quicker rev is really fun. Definitely think the ZHP should have had this ratio from the factory... :thumbsup

Sometimes I think I should've went this route with a aftermarket LSD. :)

In theory, the 3.46 ratio is 12% faster acceleration, and the 3.62 is 18% than the 3.07

///M3 Mirrors

Wait, seriously!?! That's it?? Well, yes and no... Let's try again...

Power folding, sedan fitment (no door or mirror base triangle modification needed), carbon fiber ///M3 mirrors

Ok, how's that?? :biggrin

Details in the next post, with pics. :biggrin

Firstly, let me apologize as I know this is a long read and the end result is pretty much a let down. I will get this project 100%, just will take time to acquire the correct parts. I'm pretty bummed that it didn't come together 100%, but I'll get it done soon enough...

Ok, so a while back, I bought a set of CF mirror caps for the OEM ZHP mirrors. I never had a huge desire to do ///M3 mirrors on my car as they were just too expensive, and while they looked great, I felt I had other, better places to spend car money. But, the carbon fiber caps seemed good. Well of course, eBay part, eGay quality... So, they came off the car as quickly as they went on. But, by now, I was somewhat hooked... The next thing that hooked my desire was a free pair of M3 mirrors in the pay it forward thread, a set that I was lucky enough to grab. Well, sure enough I received them and they were not only beat up, but not OEM fitment. They were the unpopular (and understandably too) replica M5 "dumbo ear" mirrors... Yep, they were ugly. So, they sat on a shelf until I helped Devlin retrofit his M3 mirrors. When finished, I saw the look and knew I had to have it. So I started to mess around with the mirrors I had... Then I noticed something, there were wires sticking out... Hmm, why? Well, turns out these mirrors had power folding motors. Hmm I thought. The bases looked correct, and they fit a sedan perfectly, so I wondered if I could make a set of frankenstein mirrors using OEM housings with these base triangles..

Project launched!!

First step was determine what I needed to keep or throw away... Base triangles and motor assemblies were kept, the rest wouldn't fit into the OEM shells I would get.

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k166/jdinisio/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_2744.jpg (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/jdinisio/media/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_2744.jpg.html)

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k166/jdinisio/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_2767.jpg (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/jdinisio/media/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_2767.jpg.html)

Here's a pic of the folding motor assemblies completely opened up. I inspected and cleaned everything and verified the motors worked.

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k166/jdinisio/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_2765.jpg (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/jdinisio/media/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_2765.jpg.html)

So now it was time to start acquiring parts. First I would need the mirror housing arms and the adjustment motor plates. I was able to get these from a guy on one of the forums. I also purchased a pair of CF shells from Turner Motorsport as I wanted CF mirrors to round out the other CF I have on the car.

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k166/jdinisio/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_2909.jpg (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/jdinisio/media/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_2909.jpg.html)

Now, start making it work... Keep in mind, I was on the ship doing this, so I didn't have a car for perfect fitment, nor did I have ALL of the parts to ensure correct fitment. But, I had a full shop with infinite resources for making stuff. The only part left (aside from glass) was the adapter plates for the adjustment motors. I saw many people making them out of plastic, whether it be thin plexiglass or other cutouts, but to me, this wasn't good enough. So, I used some thin sheet metal to make mine. It would be absolutely permanent, and more rigid.

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k166/jdinisio/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_2884.jpg (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/jdinisio/media/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_2884.jpg.html)

So with that done, it was time to see if I could mate all the parts and actually make them function. Which I did, everything seemed to be working ok.

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k166/jdinisio/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_2910.jpg (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/jdinisio/media/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_2910.jpg.html)

Somewhere along the way while on the ship, I also acquired this little guy, brand new on eBay! A good score...

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k166/jdinisio/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_3148.jpg (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/jdinisio/media/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_3148.jpg.html)

Ok, so far so good... Now I just needed to get home from the ship so I could work with the car. Still lots to do... Once I got home, the first thing to do was paint work on the triangles because they were in pretty bad shape...

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k166/jdinisio/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_3153.jpg (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/jdinisio/media/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_3153.jpg.html)

With that completed, it was time to get everything mounted up, glass installed (ordered the wide angle lenses about a week ago, received them yesterday, and test things out...

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k166/jdinisio/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_3208.jpg (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/jdinisio/media/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_3208.jpg.html)

Improvise when you're all alone and realize you can't reach the tools on the bench at a critical moment!!! :biggrin

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k166/jdinisio/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_3210.jpg (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/jdinisio/media/2003%20330i%20ZHP%20Pics/CF%20Folding%20M3%20Mirror%20Install/IMG_3210.jpg.html)

So once I physically got everything installed and fairly well situated, it was time for the electronics. One thing I learned and was pretty happy about is that the power folding motor connections are already installed in our cars. There is an extra connector inside the mirror that controls the extra motors. Lovely, now I don't have to run wires into the doors. And then there's coding. Actually not too big of a deal. First, I had to add the correct option to my VO and then turn on the features. I turned on the main folding feature, as well as the fold during lock/unlock (comfort access). Wow, way too easy I thought... But sure enough, a quick test of the new button on the door and they work!

Ok, all done right? Well, not really... Here's where the problems came up...

1. I found that the OEM housing arms have different stop points for motion than the aftermarket motors I have. So, the mirrors fold up into the stowed position just fine, but if allowed to unfold, they will just keep rolling around until they're all upside and backwards... After very detailed investigation with Devlin, I realized there is NO fixing it. Its a design difference in the parts. Completely halted my folding dreams, at least for now. Devlin had to seriously talk me off the ledge on Sunday!!

2. Even after countless hours with these mirrors, I never damaged a ribbon cable, until tonight, ripped the passenger side one... So now that mirror has ZERO electrical power, which also means I lost my courtesy tilt when it reverse.

3. I realized that when I made up the plates for the mirror housings, I drilled the passenger side one backwards, which meant the adjustment motor unit was 180* out of whack. All operations were backward. Luckily, I was able to flip the motors around and redrill the holes...

So, where do I stand? Sadly, not where I want to. The mirrors don't fold, and now the passenger side one is completely out of commission. So, I'm in need of some ribbon motors at the moment. Also, the folding doesn't work, and will not work correctly until I get the right parts. That's ok, just need to think about it and figure out what my next steps are...

Until then, I do still have carbon fiber M3 mirrors. And I'm very pleased with the sedan fitment. Trim and stuff all sits and looks pretty awesome. I did a pretty decent job painting the base triangles, but probably not 110% perfect like I would like.

Overall, I'm pleased so far with the project... Very disappointed it wasn't 100% on the first try, but will give me something to hunt for next time I'm on the ship.

Oh it will... I have close to 200 hours into these mirrors... You can bet your ass I will succeed... Now, it'll just cost me what a set of OEM M3 mirrors cost me in the beginning. But even then, I'll still have the carbon fiber and folding.

Those mirrors look great on your car. I was honestly looking into this EXACT project last night but as I read more, I learned that it wouldn't be doable without some modification and I definitely have no idea how to get any of that done lol. Big props to you!

I need to stop bullshitting and come see your car before I head back up.

:facepalm Seriously?

Yeah. Something wrong with that? I never liked the cutting, hacking and the not-quite-exact fitment with coupe mirrors.

Figured that the M5 mirrors had the same angle on their base, which is obviously a direct e46 sedan fitment.

To be honest, I wouldn't recommend these aftermarket bases. I'm not too pleased with the sturdiness of the mirrors...

As for copying my mods, it's whatever. Just kind of a pet peeve when I spend hundreds of hours doing a custom mod and then a ton of people copy it over with hardly any effort. It's all good, I get over it.

That's a silly mindset. You shared it with us and you don't want someone to replicate it? Are you expecting some kind of compensation for doing this?

Thanks for your hard work! :thumbsup

Interesting discussion. :shifty

Not really all that family oriented or in holding with the rules at ZHPMafia.com.

I'd appreciate it, if it stopped here.

I would say this, and I'm not taking sides here, but....we share mods here, so that others may gain the information to replicate, or to merely congratulate one another on a job well done.

If one does not want a particular mod replicated, just show us completed pics, and don't post a DIY.

Interesting. Love the look. I wonder if there would be a way to stop or limit the motor engagement. I've seen applications on flip up headlights that limited the amount they opened by using shorter control arms. For some reason I'm having trouble visualizing what part is causing the increased movement.

328ioc
08-06-2014, 06:37 AM
Cam,

There are no control arms or anything. The motors are barrel shaped as seen in the pics. And the outside of the motors are "keyed" to fit into the mirror arms.

Unfortunately the "keyed" part which double as the bump stop is off about 180°.

This is why it will stop in one position but spins much to far before it hits the bump stop going the other direction.

Yep, it looks like its an issue because the motors are aftermarket. OEM motors should drop right in fine, the issue is now finding some.

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". Without guys like you that can figure out how to make these kinds of mods work there would be a LOT of guys out there with plain old cars. (Or guys that would have to spend a ton of $$$ to pay someone else to do their maintenance/mods for them). I completely get that you want your car to be different than everyone else... But there's always going to be those that don't agree with what makes you happy (in my case it seems to be my decision to go with matte white paint :-)... Obviously none of that matters if you car is how you want it. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to share your experiences with all the mods you've done. When you finally get your mirrors figured out you can help me do mine, right? JK :-)

I've had OEM M3 side mirrors on my ZHP since before the 2nd reunion meet and still love the look of these mirrors. Wouldn't have it any other way. Glad to see Jon getting his done. They look awesome, especially with the carbon fiber mirror housings. Well done Joop!

Honestly, kudos to you Joop. I thought about doing a mirror install and figuring out a way to do it without drilling into the car. I think your solution works pretty well and I think once the kinks are out for the folding mirror you are set! :D
