Hey any time you and Dave want pics of any of the BMW performance accessories, let me know... I think Kpro's 135 has them all...

I also Di-NOCd some of the interior pieces if you guys want to see what that looks like...

I want a bmw perf exhaust like Marc has! I was at the dealer friday and my buddy who is a mechanic there started up on in the garage. Holy shit!

And, to stay on topic, i just did a golf t mod to my 135. Haven't driven it yet, but expect it to be louder and slightly gurgle below 3k rpms now.

Holy crap indeed. If it were any louder it wouldn't be my style, but as it is it's great. The crackling and popping are amazing.

Yeah. It was super loud in a glass enclosed room at the dealer. He floored it to 7k rpm a couple times, and it popped and gurgled all the way back to 800rpm. I about had to change my pants. And yes, it is at the edge of acceptable loudness without crossing line ( for my tastes at least)

Not enough to justify the cost; it just wasn't as polished a product as I felt it should be (e.g. finicky touch recognition, poor iPod interface UI, kludgy Android "integration", buggy Android software, etc.).

I agree, though the update helped a good chunk it's still not totally refined. I noticed a lot better sound quality out of the stock HK system though.

Just curious; how come the previous thread was retired? Because it had over 10k posts?

Washed the ZHP today and to my dismay forgot and remembered that my ONR detail spray doesn't work in these cold temperatures... so my car is going to have to stay water-spotted until the spring. This is crap...

Anyone have a way I could wipe off the dried water-spots off my car fresh out the self-car wash "drying" process without having to use detail spray?

Also swapped out my mix & match black/silver cube and made it all silver again, with the exception of the broken dash trim. That one's still black. :shifty

Here's a pic of it in the X5. I did this last spring to cover all the wood trim. It's a raised vinyl sheet that looks like CF. If you get sick of it or you need to get it back to stock, you just peel it off.
I did the dash in the 135. I'll try to get you a pic of it tomorrow along with the back of the car with the CF spoiler and CF diffuser

Not to go all mathematician on you, but I believe your 1er had the silver hex trim. I mean, I think being called a one dimensional hexagon might be offensive to the 3 dimensional cube. Especially the white whale unicorn of the silver cube.

Love the way contours look in black, but then again I'm partial to black wheels. Maybe you're exaggerating about the temp, but I don't recommend using any rattle cans under 55degree. The paint/plasti-dip will come out in globs and the finish wont be as smooth, not to mention elongated drying time.

Well, I actually did something kind of interesting today... So I started thinking... Perhaps buying another ZHP isn't the best idea. I stopped at the local dealer after making a quick phone call to my client advisor. I stopped in and test drove a 2013 135i M-Sport, DCT... Yes rando, I drove an AUTOMATIC!!!!!!!!! :rofl

I had an idea.... I don't drive much as my car sits half the year... I started to think that perhaps it would be financially responsible to pocket my insurance payout and then go look at leasing a new car. My thoughts are this. If I lease a car for 2-3 years, I could have something fun and reliable to drive, and by the time my lease was up, the new M3/M4 should be in full release/production. No, I'm not looking at an F8x ///M car... I know that I couldn't afford one. BUT, when that car is released, I expect that E9x ///M3s will become much more abundant, and the new ///M cars will drive the price down of the E9x M3.

So, I lease something now, just drive it and know that I have no worries of giving it back, maintenance, etc, for 3 years. Then at that point I buy an E90 ///M3 sedan, 6 spd when they're cheap and more available...

So, I drove the 135i and I have to say, I would absolutely, no questions asked get the DCT. Holy crap that transmission is amazing...

But, after looking at the lease costs, I realized that for 3 years, I'd be out of pocket about $23000. $5000 down and about $500/mo for 3 years... At the end of those 3 years, I have nothing to show for it. I figure I can spend $11000 or so on the ZHP, and then after 3 years of ownership, I'd have an awesome car, even if I spent the extra $12000 to equal the costs. $12k into a ZHP over 3 years would make for one badass car!!

So, lease option is out, but at least I got to go romp the hell out of a 1 series today. FUN FUN car!

LOL Jon. Nice analysis... too bad. The math works out when the lease is cheaper, but then likely it wouldn't be a BMW. Keep your eyes open for specials though. I actually leased a (shhhh) MB C230 for $239/month/27months! (not that long before I got Ness).

Yeah I hear ya... But, like I told my client advisor today when I sat down with him... The BEST sales pitch they have is putting BMW drivers into cars like my rental car... OMG its so hard driving that POS... A Nissan Sentra with the god awful CVT transmission... Who really likes those stupid things?!?!

Well after putting 1000 miles on my car since the end of December, I decided to do a detail which took most of the day. Also tightened up my hotchkis sways to the stiffest setting and tried them out for fun, huge difference!

Also scheduled an alignment since I had a run in with a ricer racing through the streets in Northern VA a couple nights ago when I was heading back to a friend's house from a party and had to swerve in the rain so hard to avoid getting hit that I ended up slamming into a big curb at 30ish mph to avoid getting side swiped by this idiot. The impact caused the front of the car to pop into the air and gauging the hell out of my wheel. Thanks to my quick reflexes and getting a little drift going, I ended up avoiding him by less than 3 feet according to my friend riding in back. After seeing all of these totaled ZHP's lately, I can say, I was definitely worried that mine was going to be next!

No damage was done to the suspension though since the car popped into the air instead of slamming into the curb and stopping.

Yea we're thinking of leaving the console black and DI-NOC on the dash and door handles....The beauty of DI-NOC is when you get sick of it, you just peel it off

Same with plastidip ;)

How's your strut tower looking?

Sent from my kick-A Galaxy S3

Strut tower looked fine. I'm dropping my car off this afternoon to get the alignment and also get my CCV done since I haven't had the free time to do it. I'm also going to get a ride in my mechanic's new Porsche 997 Turbo that he's tuned and modded so I can't wait for that!

I forsee a brief local shower in San Diego--a coolant shower!

thanks Lawrence, I'll call you later

Saturday morning heading to the local CCA chapter meeting, I had a flat. Inflated it and went to meeting, figured it was a nail but I couldn't find the nail. Sunday took to Costco tire center and they showed me the rim had cracked. Yesterday dropped it off at a wheel shop for welding. Also one of my track wheels has a bent inner lip from dropping it into a pothole.
Wheel shop guy said it's not bad enough to require straightening and I could just drive on it since it's just the inner lip and isn't leaking. But I opted to have them fix that too. Hope to pick up repaired wheels Thursday.

Hahaha damn right! I'm not missing mine. I actually check the oil level more often now because it's easier. Is it accurate? Who knows?

Sent from the freaking Catalina wine mixer.

In my experience, it's not. My uncle has a 750Li which is one of the few cars with both a dipstick and an electric oil level sensor. The one day the car claimed it was low on oil, so I figured it probably just needed a quart. I then checked the dipstick - to my alarm it was dry before wiping. I filled a full quart and saw nothing. Put in a second, and saw a tiny bit on the bottom. A full 3rd quart got it to between the minimum and the maximum point. Of course I waited a few minutes between each fill to make sure the got to the pan

I think he was able to get the dealer to replace the sensor after that, but still - no errors or anything. If the N62 didn't happen to have a dipstick, we would have never known and the car would've been running 2-3 quarts low every day.

That DCT is fun isn't it? I almost leased one right on the spot. Maybe I should have -- they offered me a much better deal ($450 incl. tax for 3 years with $1000 down... Probably could have gotten it to $400 via MSDs). This was quite a while ago however

Those service advisors pay is almost all on comission so that unethical guy had his little tactic for getting people to change their oil.
When Kpro lived out in Ohio, she took her car for an oil change and the service advisor came out with this crusty cabin filter and said it was hers and needed to be changed. She had just changed it the week before. When she told him that, he stammered and claimed he must of picked up the wrong one... bastard. And today I finished cleaning and treating all the Natural Brown leather parts and wrapping them in plastic to protect them. So, I'll get the car home with just enough time to wash her and tuck her in the garage for 2 months... The President of my BMW CCA chapter has a new M3, he was on his way to Mid-Ohio when the oil light came on. He had just bought the car and hadn't put any miles on it. He immediately put it on a trailer and got it to a dealer. The dealership ended up draining the whole thing only to find out the car wasn't low on oil, the sensor was bad.

As a previous service advisor, I can give you guys some hope that not all of them are bad. My pay was not commission-based, and the shop I worked for was/is very honest. There were many times I wished I could have had a tag on my shirt that said "NOT ON COMMISSION."

I think I now know why BMW eliminated the dipsticks. Just imagine how much more money their service departments will make for issues like this one!

In all seriousness though, I don't understand why BMW doesn't add them back. The 335d does actually have a dipstick. I don't understand why they can't add it to the other models (or at least enthusiast models like the M3). Mercedes started adding their dipsticks back, hopefully BMW follows suit. In the case of Audis, it's at least pretty easy to retrofit a dipstick.

Believe it or not, BMW gets grant money from good 'ol USA to eliminate it. A BMW engineer told Kpro this at the dealership where she works. There is a TSB on it somewhere...

Probably to keep the cars when they get older off the road. If the sensor fails and the car goes without oil long enough, it will fail. Then people have to buy a new car and the economy benefits. They have to 1)buy a new car, 2) pay taxes on the new car, 3) higher insurance for the newer car 4) higher annual tax rates for the new car......

terraphantm
01-11-2013, 07:03 AM
Then why add it back to the diesel models? And why keep it on the N62 (which was being sold in new cars until very recently). More importantly, why would there be grant money at all for eliminating a dipstick?

If that really is the case, they should've kept it on the European models. Would've made for a very easy retrofit path on US cars

I used the wrong word... they get subsidy... apparently, if everybody checked thier oil at the same time, the resulting pollution would melt the polar ice caps.

Almost as bad as the grant money given away to study cow farts...

I washed 3 ZHP tonight! Got home from work had a beer and dinner, then went out and washed the car.

Got a love it, it’s January, 11 at 6:30 pm on the far east side of the central time zone and darkness has set in. My home is located at the end of a dead end street with wooded lots to the garage side and a neighbor’s house set beyond a wooded buffer on the opposite side. Add to this, being on top of a heavily wooded hill with no street lights that overlooks the lake a few doors down. Besides the 6 spots on the front of my house, 4 porch flood lights and 2 outside garage lights, I can see the ambiance of the neighbor’s dim garage lights, a single porch light peering over the top of the ridge a few doors down and the bright florescent tubes on the front of the Dock Side Market glaring through the woods on the road that runs through the holler to the boat launch behind my house. There’s not a sound to be heard and I’m more than comfortable in my raged sweatshirt with the temp hovering at 65 degrees. I finish washing her and pull her in the garage to dry her off under the 8 tube lights in the ceiling. It just doesn’t get any better than this. Gota Love Tennessee.

Go Horns!

Finally got the car back from the shade-tree mechanic (intake boots, G.A.S. gold disa, and new strut mount on front, driver-side). Awesome weather so I roll down the windows. Get to restaurant and the passenger side window will not roll up, and then the dreaded "pop" of the regulator going out. So I picked up a regulator at the parts store and headed back to the shade-tree to have him put it in. Lighting is horrible at my apartment and I did not want to leave it with a window down over night (I replaced it a year ago, but in broad daylight). So after $150 for parts and labor, I now have a working window again.

Also rigged this up to work as my under-hood light! Works very well and very bright! It's an old light board from my dad's office that he said I could have a couple years ago and I just rigged it up to the organizing racks on the wall for the pool equipment with some bungee cords

On my return trip for the holidays the rest of the Roundel on my hood blew off so, today when we were in Nashville I decided to stop and get a replacement. First time visit to this dealer and I was impressed. Got my part and a new BMW hat and when I finished up with the cashier, she told me to pull it in the service door and the would install it free of charge. Gota say, I was impressed.

For any of you guys trying to change out your own, all they did was, slide a long piece of nylon box banding under the old one and did a two fisted pull straight up. Total time less than 5 minutes and not a spot of damage..

Dude, you honestly couldn't be any more correct. I stopped on my way home yesterday so Devlin could check out the car and as we were chatting, I told him, basically, all I did was accept $3500 to have an additional 30,000 miles on the car. In retrospect, that's not bad at all. :)

I installed new motor mounts from vibra-technics.

IMO they're great. At a stop and when just cruising around, the car feels very stock. Throttle response is sharper, but otherwise the NVH is identical to a stock M3. But when you decide to go through the gears and have some fun, these motor mounts really shine. The engine slop is eliminated - just instant power to the wheels. And the sound at WOT... I love it. It sounds kind of like getting a more aggressive intake - the induction noise just really makes the car feel more fun to drive. And I can't get over how much the slop is reduced - I can shift so much better (and quicker) now. I really can't think of anything wrong with these.

want...

do they make non-M version?

M3 and non-M mounts are the same dimensionally. M3 mounts are just stiffer stock.

Aftermarket mounts for both cars would be the same.

I should note these mounts are pretty expensive. About $400 for the pair. There was a discount for M3forum members that brought the pair down to $260 shipped... however that discount was only good until today. They are rebuildable however. You can get a new pair of inserts for $60

I was considering AKG, but I really did not want poly engine mounts. In my experience they just transmit more vibrations than I'm willing to accept. These are engineered to have the best of both worlds

How do motor mounts relate to engine intake sound? I can see how they reduce engine slop and help a bit for engine response, but intake sound? Hmph!

Honestly, I don't know. I would guess the high frequency vibrations (responsible for sound) are transmitted by the mounts to the chassis.

I've read similar sentiments from people who ran the group-N engine mounts.

When I pulled my old engine mounts, the driver side one was in two pieces. I can effectively say that I reduced my engine slop a bit.

Deep pockets for those people. Outrageous prices.

I planned on going e46 or e9x M3 mounts when my time comes.

They're the same. E46 M3 mounts were superseded to the E9x part number when the E9x launched.

As you can see mine were more or less fine physically. But the rubber was dry cracked. I don't know how they'd feel compared to brand new stock mounts - I'd guess they became a little softer by the end.

Yeah I just found that out now while browsing E46F. I thought that they were the same but I played it safe and said 'or' :rofl

How long did it take you? I assume it all went smoothly since I didn't get any texts for help :shifty

If I had to do it again, I could do it much quicker

I found that jacking up the engine to get the passenger mount out was the hardest part of the job wasnt sure how much tension the driver side mount could handle.

Having the special support bar would make the job much easier. Hoping my header install will go smoother.

Yeah that passenger mount was a pain. I basically jacked it up just enough to slide the old mount out and put the new one in. I figured the weight of the engine wouldn't be quite as bad as the actual acceleration forces.

Header install was a bitch - at least on the M3. Only because all those nuts are impossible to reach, and then chances are the studs will pull out (16 of the 18 studs in my case pulled out). Impossible to torque anything. Have to just hope for the best.

Did you have power tools? I actually managed to punch my self in the face when I was breaking the top nut on the pass side free. Used a breaker bar and a long screwdriver as a handle. Worked...but not with out violent pain. :rofl

I used hand tools. There wasn't really anything so tight that a cheaterbar couldn't loosen.

The only power tool I used was my impact screw driver in an attempt to take the metal plate off from underneath the car (12 16mm bolts... they're torqued to 60Nm + 90º) -- I got about 3 of them off, but then the hex - 3/8 adapter just sheared off. Part of the bit is left in the impact driver with no way to get it out.

They turned the hoses off at the apartment complex. So what's a car guy to do?

- Fill up bucket with car soap
- Wash car in parking lot
- Fill up bucket with water
- Rinse car
- Get stared at by neighbors for being insane
- Have shiny car

Had been kinda lazy to write this up. But during the holidays I took some vacations and used about three days to work on the car. No mods, basically giving it some tender loving care.

Although I was not able to take pics of all the work done (had my hands too dirty to use the phone or any electronic device) I will try to explain the best I can.

First thing I did was take the bumper out to retouch the lower parts that had some scratches and plasti-dipped the grill. I actually found at Pep Boys a Duplicolor paint from Honda, called Milano Red, that matches almost percfectly to our Imola red. I used it to paint the areas that cannot be seen from plain sight, then used OEM touch-up paint from BMW to paint what is easily seen. End result was fantastic IMO.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a144/MrJohn/photo14_zps26887962.jpg

While the bumper was out I cleaned all I could. Got some dry leaves out of radiator area, cleaned brake ducts, radiator ducts (it actually looks new/shinny black right now, had no idea it would look so good), aluminum bumper bar, engine bay, etc. If my had could fit, I cleaned it.
Pic is from before, have no after pic.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a144/MrJohn/photo13_zpsf52204c9.jpg

As you can see in the previous picture, I also changed my headlight lenses. WOW what a difference!! Makes any car look like new!
Before
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a144/MrJohn/photo23_zps129768fc.jpg
After
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a144/MrJohn/photo34_zpsc31741a3.jpg

Then as I got in the mood of getting everything as clean as possible I got the car in some stands and cleaned all four wheel wells. And cleaned the inside of the wheels while they were out.
Before
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a144/MrJohn/photo24_zps9455d77f.jpg
After
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a144/MrJohn/photo33_zpsd4899343.jpg

Thats basically all the pics I got. But afterwards came the interior detailing, exterior detailing including polish and wax. I spent about 1.5 hour on cleaning the alcantara steering wheel alone. Made a HUGE difference.

Then I did not want to use the car for several days in order to keep if clean. lol Kept looking at it to see if I could do anything else. But since I had only spent $8 on the can of paint I wanted to keep a low budget project. But I could no hold my self and bought a new windshield cowl. And that completed the "like new" look to the front of the car. I must say that i have found a new love for my car. lol

Ill try to give the car a quick wash this afternoon to post a pic of the final result.

Been there. I used to hook a hose to my 2nd floor apartments sink then string it down off the balcony to wash the car.... People thought I was insane

Updated my Nav to V32 software today, enabled the perspective view, and then tucked her into the garage to sleep while I'm gone... Literally within millimeters from the workbench, allowing Ayren to park the X3 inside at night too.

Off to work I go...

want...

do they make non-M version?

I probably should mention -- the M3's idle is a good bit higher than a non-M's (900 vs 700). It is possible that the lower idle *may* cause your motors to transmit a few more vibrations at a stop than my car does.
