Replaced my broken stock rear speakers with used Harman Kardon speakers from a junk yard car. Sounds much better. Even better I only paid $10 a piece for the speakers and the HK speaker covers. So I spent a total $30 for three of them. One more and I can swap out the front door speakers too.

Well, I did get some good footage at the track:

Unfortunately, my front left tire now looks like this:

Definitely open to comments on driving since it was my first time out on track. But my real concern is with the tires - currently doing research on what I can do to minimize outer sidewall wear like this

How long were you on the track for (intervals) driving like in the video? And what tires are you on?

It looks to me like you’re carrying too much speed into the corners. That’s why you’re fighting and making corrections mid-corner. It’s forcing you to give additional steering input and making you keep your steering input held all the way through the exit. Keeping weight transferred on the front as you’re understeering through the corner is just scrubbing that front outside tire across the asphalt. Also kinda looks your turn-in points are inconsistent.
Obviously it varies corner to corner, but ideally you should be able to give a single steering input, and then as soon as you reach the apex start opening the wheel and feeding it throttle as you track out to the exit curbing (even before the apex if it’s increasing radius). This is where autocross and track driving really differ—the longer distances mean the turns are less abrupt on the track, so the quick, jerky inputs often needed to navigate an autocross course don’t translate to a road course. Smooth, flowing, single inputs reign supreme.
Really good job turning your head and looking into/through the corners, though. I can tell you’re an experienced autocrosser.
What’s your camber up front? Assuming you were checking tire pressures after each session, what were they?

More negative camber would certainly help up front. I used to run -2° and still had heavy wear on the outer shoulder. Also, like Spenser said, you are carrying too much speed through the corners. The squealing tires are a pretty clear sign to me. There (ideally) shouldn't be any squealing.
How old are your tires? One of our family cars (Honda City) had Continentals and they didn't age very well. They were dry-rotting after only 3 years.

Something a lot of people have issues with is tire pressure. The tendency is to drop pressure for more contact patch, and that's right to an extent. What you want to make sure is that the shoulder isn't rolling over too much. It looks to me like you're running too low a pressure up front and where the sidewall meets the tread you're getting that separation.

This is something that I definitely made a mistake on. $158 CAD for open lapping from 10AM - 5PM, I ran ~60 laps, and around 8-10 lap stints on a 3 KM track. My mindset was "make the best use of my 7 hours there" so I ran as much as I could. Which obviously backfired - I felt I was driving better with the latter sessions, but was going 1-2 seconds slower, and I suspect that's due to overheating the tires and blistering them. Next time I'll be looking to do 5 laps maximum, including in/out laps to minimize roasting them.

Yeah, coming from the world of autox I sort of just drove the same as I did on the track. Thanks for the advice! Yeah, lots of work I have to do on driver mod. Ideally I'd have someone more experienced to sit with me, but that might be hard given these times.
I started off with -0.2 and -0.7 up front (taken from alignment sheets) before I pushed the strut tops in all the way. Using my phone and piece of wood on the tire as a straight edge, I gained -2.0 and -1.8 deg on the left and right sides respectively. Not sure how accurate these measurements are though.
Tire pressures seemed really high. Tire pressures were 42 psi in front and 40 psi in rear. I set those based off chalking the tire, then seeing how much rollover I had on the sidewall. I'm thinking it might be because I was very aggressive with some of the curbs - perhaps I should've driven a few laps without using curbs, then re-checking the marks, and adjusting pressures accordingly.

Hmmm this is something I actually didn't consider until now, that may have been a contributing factor. The tires are dated from 2016, and I did notice a bit of minor dry-rot on the sidewall edge when I took it back out of storage last year. To address tire wear I may have to get camber plates, but ideally I was hoping to run my car as-is to get the most out of it with the current (basically stock) setup. Then start throwing parts at it after. But the car just seems to be so safely setup that it just plows from factory. Not enough negative camber, high roll gradients, and caster mean lots of positive camber in the corners. I guess putting parts on aside I'd just have to learn to steer better, and try not to oversteer into the corners.

The sidewalls did scrub earlier in the day, so I upped the pressures then re-chalked. As mentioned above I'm running what seems to be a very high pressure, but even when I autox'd these tires I've found they just don't have a stiff enough sidewall, and require high pressures to compensate.

Those tires are quite excellent rain tires for autox. But yeah they just don't have the right build for dry autox.

We run 20-25 minute sessions in 95°F ambient/70% humidity full sun in late June at VIR and I’ve yet to see any serious tire degradation on other cars, even cars with regular street tires. As you increase seat time (especially if you get an instructor) you’ll be able to increase stint lengths without cooking the tires. They’ll start getting greasy but that’s when it really gets fun.

I ran -1.8° up front for a while before I got the Turner fixed camber plates that I think are -3°. Even at -1.8° I never had serious shoulder wear, I just needed more camber to increase my speed as my skill level increased. I run 28psi cool pressure on the cast iron RS4 tires.

That's good to hear. I might need camber plates in the future, but want to do driver mod with my car as-is before I start throwing parts at it. I have some friends with a lot more track experience (Ontario Time Attack) than me who are willing to ride the next time I go. And yes I'm getting some quotes for a set of RS4s - gonna take my winter setup which is almost up to the wear bars, and has just been sitting for 4 years. They're 17 x 8 so not ideal, but looking to throw a set of 245 RS4s on them to make a budget track setup.

Finally getting around to the E46 OPG. At 206,000 miles, it was due. The Corona Virus shutdown has allowed for the perfect opportunity to get these things done that would never have time in the normal working weeks. I did the OPG on the X5 a couple of weeks ago along with a transmission service on the GM 5L40-E.

This is my current passenger side headlight assembly. Some dipshit drilled a big hole to route angel eye wiring out instead of doing it right so I had to come up with a creative way to plug this hole until I could source a new headlight assembly to replace this one. All I need to do now is swap out the insides from one headlight assembly to another.
I have rebuilt enough E46 headlight assemblies I could do this blindfolded...

The new ones are intact so I have something to do which will finish off the passenger side headlights.

I did something similar. Scored a set of facelift coupe headlights for $80 CAD. They're in a bit of a rough shape, but the important part is that the passenger's lense was not cracked. I plan on refinishing the lense, then swapping it with mine (which has a small crack)

If you can actually figure out how to take out the innards of a facelift coupe headlight once baked open please document it and let me know. I’ve done lens swaps and full retrofits on multiple other cars (including a newer BMW with adaptive lenses) and I could not for the life of me get that housing disassembled far enough to install my ZKW-R clear lenses on the projectors. I’ve searched high and low for any kind of guide, found nothing, and I’m not baking those bastards open again until I have a definitive answer on getting them apart.

Ahhhh sorry... when I said lense, I meant the outer lense that's glued on, not the actual projector lense. I'll only be baking the two housings just to swap that bit between them, which will be very quick

Dang that's so clean, just like brand-new... well, actually cleaner than brand-new since the cars are delivered with a slathering of cosmoline (https://www.dvatp.com/bmw/e46/2006-04-21) from factory.
On my end, I took my wheels off for their annual re-coating of Poorboy's wheel sealant. I also have an appointment tomorrow for tires:
- 2 new Continental ExtremeContact Sport going on the front (to replace the ones I chewed up at the track)
- 4 new Hankook RS4 going on my winter rims, old winter tires will be dismounted & sold for pennies online
Aside from a few stubborn deposits, my street rims are decently clean:
https://i.imgur.com/Md3M3Vil.jpg
I bought some Autoglym custom wheel cleaner and was going to clean the winters pretty thoroughly, but I immediately noped out of there after seeing how bad the barrels were. So I just cleaned the face of the rims instead:

The front wheels on my X3 looked worse than that the first time I pulled them off to clean and coat. Meguiar’s Wheel Brightener diluted to the necessary strength (it’s a concentrate) made very quick work of 95% of the embedded stains.

Yeah, I guess most off-the-shelf spray-on wheel cleaners aren't quite gonna cut it for something like this. I'll keep that product in mind for the future, but to be honest I'm thinking I'll actually leave my winter/track rims dirty. They're not in the greatest condition to start and are only going to be further showered in brake dust during events. Don't want to have to have a maintenance regimen for two sets of rims - street setup will be maintained for sure since they are on the car 90% of the time, and were coated from day 1

Massive shout out to Botond and Charlie for their help on M3 mirrors installation that happened on Saturday. I had M3 mirrors seating in my garage for 2 years. In March I finally decided to proceed, paint them and installed. I was very uncomfortable with drilling and modifying the doors of my car. With Charlie and Botond help, the project is completed and my touring is looking mad right now.
I took Charlie's advice and painted the mirror base plates in glossy black to match the shadow line trim. Results are amazing.
There was plenty if pictures uploaded by Charlie already, but I've added a few more below. That is how my car looked on Sunday morning.

I took Charlie's advice and painted the mirror base plates in glossy black to match the shadow line trim. Results are amazing.
Looks amazing. Agreed on the glossy black baseplates—I think BMW really goofed by giving the M3s the body colored baseplates.

I think on the M3 it looks right only because there are no black trim along the body so on your coupe I think having the solid color would look right but not so on the touring and sedan models.

You know me John... I'm more the kind of guy who will help a family member and not take advantage of them for my time. There was no money exchanging hands... just family helping family. How it always should be. We all had a great time... Sergy, Alla, Botond and I. Lots of kidding around going on and some funny submarine story telling. We all had a good laugh and it was awesome just to catch up while getting Sergy's much anticipated mod retrofitted to his touring. Knowing just how huge this would be for him, I could not say no so we got it done. At the end of the day it was so worth it seeing just how happy Sergy was with his car. I'm glad I have the knowledge and know how to do this mod among other things I have done... :thumbsup

Sergy, it was not a problem for me. I reserved my entire Saturday to help you out. That is what friends are for! :thumbsup As for doing something... we still have the summer so let's see how it goes regarding this pandemic... next time I come up I may bring the Audi so I can see Alla teasing you about your Audi :ducking

I have had Botond come up and use one of my garages so he could pull his touring inside where there is shade to detail it. He knows he can do this anytime he wants. :drevil
It sure was amusing when Alla was cracking jokes about Botond being homeless and sleeping in his car in my driveway. I was cracking up when I looked over to see him snoozing in his car...doing your mod was stressful tedious and time-consuming work... I don't blame him for being so exhausted... ;)

Looking very pretty! I gotta get my car dialed-in at some point. It's not to bad, a bit swirled, so I just hide it for now with wax. It seems that there's a stray cat in my building's underground garage that has taken a liking to my car - no sense in correcting the paint if it's just gonna get scratched again. Will take care of it after moving out.

I'm going to be installing my camber plates + DIY alignment tomorrow, so I swung by Crappy Tire to rent a spring compressor, and picked up a small tube of marine grease. So I re-greased my new (to me) used camber plates:
Cleaned bearings:

Re-greased (the actual balls & cage were also greased before reassembly, just didn’t want to get my phone messy):
https://i.imgur.com/n5idAaVl.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/E71VcMFl.jpg
When I first bought them there was a small hint of "crunchiness" in the bearing, which I initially attributed to dirt embedded within the old grease. But to be honest, I didn’t feel a difference – the bearings do rotate smoothly, the only “crunchiness” is audible. Not sure what it is, but all the parts look okay, and I think it should be fine ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
New headlight, new side marker lights, new hood insulation.

Yeah, I was quite surprised myself that there isn't a whole lot of info online on these. But GC is a pretty reputable company, and the deal was there for me so I decided to snag them. Here's my small review:
Adjustment:
You do have to jack the car up to a point where the wheels are still touching the ground, but just barely. If you get it right, you can reach in and easily move the plate back and forth by grabbing the spring. It is a bit frustrating at times where the slots in the strut tower also allow the entire plate to move, in addition to the adjustment in the plate - I think other camber plates that have a divorced camber adjustment from stock would be a bit easier. So I just decided to run max stock camber adjust, and just move the plates for consistency.
Also, don't expect to be able to use this mount and adjust camber back and forth between a street/track setting, without something else changing (like I have). My plan was to swap settings before & after every event, but when doing my alignment found that toe was being very inconsistent. I still don't regret buying the plates because they were only a few bucks more than TMS fixed plates, and the ease of adjustment is still there. But I will likely re-align next weekend to something like -2.3 deg camber, and near-zero toe and leave it at that. I'm not sure, maybe I'm doing something wrong with my alignment, but toe just kept on changing whenever I'd change between street/track camber.
Installation:
Also as seen by my pics, the bearings are quite different than stock (which uses a radial ball bearing) or other camber plates (which use a spherical). It's a thrust ball bearing that is pretty beefy, and given the large diameter those suckers must've cost something like $60-80 a piece (assuming they are coming from a high-quality supplier like SKF or NSK). The only caveat with having a thrust ball bearing is that the axial compression on the bearing is entirely dependent on the torque of the top nut. Unlike a radial or spherical bearing where you're basically compressing solid metal, torquing the nut actually squeezes the bearing races against the balls. I suspect that it is because of this, that the bearing is quite hard to turn once assembled onto the strut. The stock upper mount rotates very freely, the GC plates still rotate smoothly but require moderate effort to turn by hand, and won't "glide" like if you spun the stock mount, and let go. I wonder if anyone else with these plates can comment if they've had similar experiences?
Driving:
I've only put about 50 km on the plates, most of it highway miles. That small drive revealed no difference in NVH or steering effort, it's as if the stock strut mount was still installed (there is an integrated poly bushing within the plate). I guess time will tell if the bearing will last, as I am a bit concerned about what I mentioned above.

I didn’t have GC but I did have TCK camber plates and thought I’d share something unrelated to your question: some camber plates aren’t as tall as stock strut mounts, so you’re going to lower the front even more. And since the H&R Sport already lowers the front more than the rear, that uneven rake can be even more accentuated with camber plates. Just food for thought.

I guess I should also add this info too - It seems that GC plates have the same stack height as OE. Front ride height for me was unchanged

The boys and I installed the 3.38 diff that's been sitting in my corner for months. Took about 4.5h, could have been quicker but I'll take it. The difference is like night and day and the RPMs feel like exactly where they should be, which makes sense. Before I always felt they were a little low in each gear at most speeds. Very happy I didn't go with the 3.07. I swear ZHPizza's car is still punchier below 3k rpm though. Must be that ZHP magic. Guess ZHPs are special after all.

Hmmm I actually feel the opposite with my car, but that could be the high mileage. The only other E46 I've driven was a 325ci and I swear that felt punchier than mine, though admittedly that was back in 2015 so it's a bit hard to recall. On the contrary, I did drag race a 2019 Chevy Blazer RS which has a rated 0-60 time of 6.1 seconds, and I was only slightly behind. I'm sure with quicker shifting I could get fairly close to what the ZHP was rated at back in the day

I might be missing it but did you ever do your VANOS seals? Replacing them made the single biggest difference to engine performance on my car, even bigger than the diff I just installed. Literally turned the car from a Honda-experience where you had to absolutely rev the shit out of it into what I'm much more familiar with with my Diesel Mondeo, where you can kind of just get on the gas at any gear or rpm and it just goes.

I thought the Beisan seals were viton so they wouldn't go bad, but it has been about 200k km since they were swapped. My car does display the symptoms - mainly, the car just feels sluggish at low RPMs, then once you hit around 4k there is definite pickup.
Perhaps I may have to order the seals, and add a VCG to the next FCP order!

Beisan shouldn't go bad but who knows, maybe the previous owner didn't install them properly or something. Have you replaced your crank and camshaft sensors? They don't always throw a code when going bad and when they break it's basically like VANOS not working, so similar symptoms to the rings.
Also I should mention ZHPizza does have the Shark Tune which changes the throttle response. Additionally, our cars have electronic gas pedals. The pedal is actually very good for the era, but it's still flawed. It was extremely noticeable when I switched from the 2004 Mondeo (cable throttle) to the 2012 (electronic throttle). I thought the car was broken at first because when I pressed the gas to leave an intersection, I could press it down literally all the way and the car would barely move. It was like 5% throttle or something. Very dangerous. Almost caused an accident once because the car wouldn't move when I needed to accelerate quickly. Other times it would accelerate normally.
Turns out, the computer gets overwhelmed with the data if you press down the throttle too quickly, so in order to use 100% of the engine's power, you have to press the throttle down very slowly. So depending on how fast you press down the gas, you actually end up with different amounts of throttle, even if you think you're giving it 100%. The Mondeo is an absolute piece of garbage in this regard, but our cars have much better electronic throttles. Really shows you how advanced the E46 was for its time. But the same throttle effect is still present, even if less pronounced, If I want to use 100% power from the M54b30, I have to press the throttle down slowly. Of course, the slower you do it, the less initial "punch" you will feel because obviously you are not giving it as much juice as quickly.

AFAIK the crank and cam sensors are original. I think at some point I'll get around to doing the VANOS seals, my car still runs smoothly aside from being a bit sluggish at low RPMs. If that doesn't solve it I'll look into the sensors.
Totally agreed on throttle-by-wire versus cable with respect to an OEM application, my mom's Corolla although auto has excellent response because it's a cable. And my friend's 2018 WRX has the infamous "rev hang" - shifting from 1st to 2nd smoothly means you have to sit there with the clutch in, waiting for the revs to drop for what feels like forever. Drive-by-wire isn't all that bad, in fact it's much better than cable throttles in conjunction with a standalone ECU. Traction control, rev-matching, and pedal maps are just a few of the many things you can easily implement, and the response is on-par with cables from what I've heard. The reason for having such laggy throttle response from factory are emissions, and probably the fact that your everyday driver doesn't want such a "jumpy" pedal when just driving to get groceries.
I actually misread your comment initially and thought "wtf I've never had 100% throttle feel like 5% in my car." Hard to believe the 2012 Mondeo is that bad. I'd actually like to try driving an E36. Given the similarities in platforms and powertrain, I'd like to experience one and compare with our cars. Although our cars have electronic throttles I understand why BMW went to one. Implementing cruise control doesn't require a mechanical actuator with a second cable, and I may be speaking out of my ass here, but I'm willing to bet that the DSC system in our cars is worlds better than the E36, with its secondary throttle body.
ZHPizza
06-22-2020, 10:32 AM
@t.er You're spot on that our DSC is a big jump from the ASC in the e36, but that throttle cable is just amazing. It's a no-lag on/off switch and I love it. There is a lot of work involved with converting the e46 to a throttle cable setup but man that would be awesome.
@Galapolis I also forgot about the headers. Probably not much difference from stock since I put cats in too but headers + intake + zhp cams + shark throttle mapping would definitely explain the extra punch.
Oh and it's red. That's the real secret sauce.

Eventually I will sell the Audi, yes. Very selective on who I will sell this Unicorn to. Once she goes though I will miss her but in the right hands she will be well taken care of and that is what matters for this very unique and rare car. My heart has always been on E46 BMWs and for daily driving duties I have found and appreciated driving my ZHP while I owned it so getting back into my dream ZHP makes this all the more bittersweet since I will be forced to let the Audi go...

Had my second, passenger airbag recall done. One of the sales guys at the dealership offered to buy it and begged me to call him if I ever decide to sell.

haha that must feel pretty good... still gotta take mine in at some point. I'm waiting on a trunk handle gasket which is backordered until July so I'll do my airbag then.
I already put this in the thread for my car but it's a pretty cool pic so here it goes:

I did a driveway string alignment last weekend, tying fishing line around jackstands. Had a crooked steering wheel and pull to the left so I thought it was down to the sketchy alignment setup, so I borrowed what were basically Smart Strings and I still have the same issue.

Nah, it only happened after putting in Ground Control camber plates, then doing a DIY string alignment in the driveway. I think I may have had a very small pull before, but it was so miniscule that it may have been due to the curvature in the width of the road.
I'm going to swap my brand-new RS4s on and see if the issue is still there. Right now I have two Continental ExtremeContact Sport on the front with a decent amount of camber wear, and the two in the rear are brand-new.

Thanks John, I honestly did not plan for this to happen. That’s what makes this fun[emoji1419][emoji1417]
So yeah... I’m back and in typical fashion, I’m already building my mod list.
First thing I will be doing is my Coby wheel swap and LCM sw 4.5 swap before driving this car home.
Then after getting the car home and engine bay cleaned to my standards... I have a BMW Performance Carbon Fiber strut bar to mount and an E90 hidden compass and homelink auto dim rear view mirror to swap in place.
I plan to install a UUC EVO3 SSK/DSSR for this car as well as doing many other upgrades as I begin yet another ZHP project thread.... here I go again John[emoji12]
I also plan to get the Umnitza Orion V4 Angel Eyes to install on this car since all of my BMWs have had these on them. Out of all the angel eye products out there, this is the absolute best if you want to have presence. The lighting is clear and smooth for LED angel eyes....worth the cost to have them.
I will also install the Morimoto LED fogs I have sitting around as "spares"... they will now be used in this ZHP :)
Looks like I should be thinking about starting another project thread and I will once I have the car in my hands... still waiting on the title to arrive so I can come down to finish the deal. :drevil

Pete, when I do mine I will detail how I did it. You find the switched +12V wire and put it in Pin3 and verify you have the ground (brown) wire in Pin10. That's it. Not sure how convertible works but I would guess it is the same. Would have to verify pinouts but I know for sedans and coupes this is all you have to do :thumbsup

Aren’t convertible mirrors different from the other models? I swear I remember reading that the antenna receiver for keyless entry is located in the mirror in verts.
Maybe I’m misremembering...

I had seen that the E46 vert mirror only fits the vert. I swear I looked up an E93 mirror in Realoem and it listed fitment to the E90/91/92/93 - the same mirror. So I just picked any E90 mirror as the criteria I used when I bought one.
The eBay listing for the part I bought says it fits 238 BMW's of all platforms (sedans/coupe/verts) which might be wrong since I'm also seeing in Realoem that the fitment for mirror I bought says it only fits E39 Sedan/Touring.
I think I'm going to find out who's right......

The cop said if they couldn’t make contact or the person denied it but they had reason the believe it was the car that they would impound the car and do an investigation. I’m guessing since they entered all the info into the report that the person admitted to it.

I'm happy to hear you found the jerk who hit and run your car. I hope this jerk gets a hefty fine for not stopping and that his insurance pays to fix your car to boot! This is one reason I refuse to ever street park any of my cars no matter what...I have seen too many people get their cars hit, it is not worth it to me to have to go thru this amount of BS because someone can't drive right...no excuses here...

Go get em, I hope they get what's coming to them. When I was just a kid I thought I did the same thing to a car down the road from my house as I had passed by it very close, so I walked over and looked at the car. No observable damage, but I still knocked on their door and had them look at it. They said if they found any issues they'd let me know, but I never heard back from them. It was winter so it might've just been some ice on the road that I ran over, right as my car passed theirs
Also this was not today but a few days ago, decided to pick this up:

It’s crazy how people don’t want to be accountable for what they do. If they had stopped we could’ve taken care of it outside of insurance. Now I’m going to go full press against them. I should hear from the investigator tomorrow or Wednesday.

It's an emissions plaque that allows my car to enter certain parts of certain European cities. Of course, it doesn't actually because it's fake. And yeah, my interior is so trashed anyway that I can't really justify spending money on it. I'll do a full interior swap when the time comes.

Wrapped unknown wire bundle. Factory wrapping all disintegrating from the Upper Radiator Hose heat. Does wire bundle terminate to the Thermometer or continues to go somewhere?
Also, how do you remove the Thermometer? Tried pulling the clip. Hard to pull so I backed off. Must be doing something wrong. I might destroy the Thermometer.
Thanks.

That wiring branch goes to the thermostat, as well as the exhaust VANOS solenoid. To remove the connector at the thermostat you have to pull up the metal retainer away from the connector housing. It'll be very tough to get off by hand, usually I use a very small needle-nose plier or flathead screwdriver to pull it up. You can see the retainer pulled up in the below pic:

Update to the hit and run on my car on June 29th.
The cops called me today and the lady admitted to hitting my car. She is in her 60’s and said she was scared and drove off. She wanted the officer to tell me she was sorry. They gave me all the insurance information, and I contacted her insurance company. I told them the shop my car was getting repaired at, and they immediately sent over the direct billing information.
The shop took pictures for the insurance company, and they ordered an entire new mirror assembly. Once parts come in they will contact me and I will drop the car off to have the mirror replaced.
I can’t believe I found the car that hit mine, and that she admitted to it.
Can’t wait to get the new mirror!

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200711/7a432e34dbb889d806ad493e14c63f15.jpg
I was able to get back there with a 5mm Allen wrench and it tightened up about 1/4 turn. I then cleaned as much of the oil as I could off the exhaust, engine, and trans.
Then I gave her a wash and hopefully that takes care of the oil leak!

Ah, the joys of a used car. Got my new FCABs in today (Meyle HD) and found out the old ones were different left/right. Left was Meyle HD and was pretty solid still, right side definitely needed replacing and promptly puked oil when it ripped taking it off. Hmm, since it was oil filled I wonder if it was Lemforder? 5 minutes with a dremel on the centre metal insert and it was off, new FCABs slid on like butter with some dish soap.
My intention was to keep the old ones so I could press in Z4M FCABs into the old lollipops, but I'm not sure if IDs would be to the same tolerances left and right. I'm really in no rush though so I'll press the old ones out first and measure the bores to make sure the press fit will be more or less the same. Then whenever I happen to be in the US next I'll order the Z4M FCABs from FCP.

Maybe this was the source of your strange alignment woes?
Maybe this was the source of your strange alignment woes? You know what... I never put 2 and 2 together. This could be it! Once unbolted from the car the oil-filled bushing had a lot of play and made a squishing noise whenever you moved it. And this totally makes sense, since worn FCABs do seem to contribute to excessive toe compliance. Still going to get my alignment at a shop this time around but I may use their setup to verify the string method

You know what... I never put 2 and 2 together. This could be it! Once unbolted from the car the oil-filled bushing had a lot of play and made a squishing noise whenever you moved it. And this totally makes sense, since worn FCABs do seem to contribute to excessive toe compliance. Still going to get my alignment at a shop this time around but I may use their setup to verify the string methodI mean at this point it's a bad fcab or ghosts

Miiiiight be ghosts lol. I went ahead and got my alignment done. I’m not sure what’s up with this car though… after they aligned it, the steering wheel was canted to the right, and I still have a very slight pull to the left. So they shimmied the tie rods over a bit which centred the steering, but the ever so slight pull is there. Could just be the crown in the road, but I can do a very slow lane change with my hands off the wheel. Gonna live with it though, at least until the next suspension upgrade.

Regarding the off center steering wheel: Was the steering guibo ever changed? maybe it wasn't properly 'clocked' (for a lack of words).

I did change it, and have had an alignment since then (before this one) and it was okay. Hoping I didn't bend anything at the track, because the alignment got screwed up there, and that was when these issues started

Maybe someday you can! With used E46 M3 prices pushing twice high KBB, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to afford one. So I’m trying to rehab and maximize the potential of my ZHP.
And John, those are Öhlins Road & Track struts with Vorshlag camber plates. My next task will be installing the group buy RTABs I bought, along with new ball joints in the other two RTA positions. After that I’ll install the SSK I’ve had lying around for a few years now.

Yeah, there are only a few coilovers I'd consider, with the Ohlins near, if not at the top. There's a guy selling set of double adjustable Ground Control coils for $1600 CAD locally, including Hybrid camber plates - it's definitely tempting but I just spent a bunch on a set of RS4s, GC street camber plates (got a good deal used), Meyle HD FCABs, and brass brake caliper bushings.
Continuing with my headlights. Swapped the lenses and wetsanded the set down, then sprayed 2K Clear on both sets (ones going on my car, and the ones I'm going to sell). Everything was going well until bugs started landing on the wet paint. Uuuuuugh why would you want to land on a wet surface where the liquid slowly suffocates and paralyzes you. I'll have to see if I can get them off with a bit of polishing once cured. I also have very small run that's very hard to see, but it bugs me (ha) so I'll also wetsand that out. Letting them dry overnight, then reinstallation on the car tmrw. Sanding/polishing/waxing to happen ~30 days from now

As soon as I spray anything outside I immediately bring it in the garage where I have 2 box fans blowing on whatever I painted. It’s the only way I can keep bugs off the wet surface, and it prevents the southern humidity from slowing down the dry-time.
Those look super clear, though. Really nice work.

Replaced the two front coilovers on Saturday; I have a few new cuts and bruises to prove it! I didn’t have time to replace the rears before returning to work in Chicago, so front/rear clearance is mismatched, camber is only 0.4-0.5°, toe is probably too low at 1/16”-1/8,” and caster measures a whopping 16.9° unless I really mismeasured. The Vorshlag camber plates are new and came set to maximum caster; I’ll reset them to neutral or decreased caster after talking with Vorshlag. But it’s really nice NOT scraping my plastics on every other dip, and not cringing every time I hit a bump!

Thanks! Turned out to be easier than I thought it would be. The bolt was rotating freely so I just had to mess with it a little until it was enough to remove it with pliers. I have no idea how the bolt moved freely cause it broke while torquing it. Guess I was lucky!

Took my car to the dealer for the 2nd passenger's side airbag recall. I've tried everything to contact and set up an appointment at the dealer by my house, but I guess since recall work doesn't pay the bills, they don't care. I sent a recall request to the dealer that did all the rust repair work on my car, and within 15 minutes someone called me and we set up an appointment.
I had to drive ~50 mins to get to that dealer, but I didn't mind as they have A+ customer service. I brought my own "do not wash" sign, but I guess they encounter enough fussy customers, so they were familiar with that and had their own signs ready. Only caveat was that they disconnected my dash cam so I have no footage at all, aside from when I pulled into the service entrance. It's a bit suspicious however I do trust that they didn't do anything to the car, as the mileage was unchanged when I got the car back.
I did feel a bit proud of my car during this visit though - the moment I pulled into the service entrance, a few guys came over and oggled the car. We had a small chat, one of them also had an E46. Turns out many of them are enthusiasts like us, and love the older models :rockon

I bought some small things at that local dealer's part department, who told me there were no airbags in stock, and to set up an appointment to get in line. No answers to multiple phone calls, so I did a live chat on their website with a rep, who told me they'd get back to me. I waited a week, then just said screw it let's go to that dealer that knows my car. And guess what... they DID have airbags in stock and could get me in anytime. Hmmmmm.....

It's because quite a bit of the paint on my car isn't original, but the front end is. That's a pretty good way to describe my front bumper lol. You know it's bad when your mom (not a car enthusiast) tells you "you didn't wash your car properly, because the front bumper still looks very dusty" No, mom, that's all the rock chips :(

Rust repair from a dealer? Was it under warranty?
Rust repair from a dealer? Was it under warranty?
Yeah, BMW Canada has a 12 year/unlimited mileage rust perforation warranty (https://www.bmw.ca/en/topics/owners/parts_service_warranty/warranties.html). While it technically states that sheet metal has to rust through, both the PO and myself (through the service advisor the PO worked with) have heavily used that warranty just for surface rust on my car right up until it expired in 2016. The last job involved completely replacing both rocker panels, which in itself was a huge job.

Installed my Öhlins rear struts and springs yesterday, along with a tilt sensor for a soon-to-be-enabled alarm system; right now the car is at the dealership for a full alignment w/corner balance. I had to put my almost-bald 18x9 Nero Zeroes on the rear, as I flatted one of my PSS rears yesterday; I’m sure the dealer will offer to replace them...
FWIW, if you’re removing KW springs, you DO need spring compressors. The Öhlins, OTOH aren’t nearly so fussy.
Next up—off to the dent repair guru (my spouse backed into my PS door,) then time to get quotes on rust mitigation, repaint, subframe reinforcement install.

You can still do that on jack stands! Just be sure to wear safety glasses that have a foam seal around your eyes, so specs of rust don't get past. And when you blow your nose it comes out black, again from all the rust in the air from when you were hammering/grinding stuff that hasn't been touched in 16 years :rofl

I had an '02 TL as well that I bought for my daughter in college. It was a great car until it's demise last year........ Lived with the torque converter bang until 217K miles when the subframe broke - it had completely rusted away - on a pristine rust free car?
Watch to see where your A/C condensate drain runs, turns out the drain drips onto the subframe behind the passenger front wheel and rots the subframe away. Chose not to spend the money to replace the subframe with that mileage and with the transmission knocking on my door

Well, the stealership didn’t corner balance my car, so it was well-aligned but the rear tires disappear behind the fender lip, while the fronts had 25-30 mm of space between tire and rim at Öhlins recommended starting heights. Since I have a flat summer tire in my square setup, I switched to my 17” all-seasons for this week—and lowered the fronts by the maximum I could (about 21 mm). The effect on alignment/drive feel was minimal. Next I’ll drop the rear struts and dial in a little more spring preload to even out tire clearance and eliminate the nose-up stance the car has now. I’ll also call Vorshlag—I’m not convinced I have the right spring length in back, given the ride height discrepancy. Otherwise the setup feels really sweet; I haven’t experienced this supple a ride in several years.
Next moves:
1) Install alarm horn.
2) Get alarm and folding mirrors flashed, along with a few other minor tweaks.
3) New summer tires.
4) Put in the bespoke SSK that’s been sitting in my garage.
5) Install new fuel filter, plugs, check injectors—when I mash the accelerator, I get intermittent hesitation combined with a ‘shoosh’-ing sound—guessing the motor’s briefly fuel-starved. Gradual acceleration works without such symptoms.
6) Install new dead pedal (mine just cracked), reinstall trunk trim and Stealthboxes.
7) While I’m working in Chicago, visit the Werkshop (sp?) and discuss rust mitigation, paint restoration, door card refurb, possible rear LSD in 2.93, installing CMP subframe reinforcements, etc.
8) Avin Avant—maybe.
9) Replace RTABs.
10) Heated seats—every RN should have these!
11) Before all of this, go out drinking with some of my nurse girlfriends tomorrow night (I’ll be the sober one).

Bought 12mm H&R spacers to hopefully fit with no rubbing -- H&R Sport springs, 135s, 225 front, 255 rear. Way too tucked in right now. Pics and full update sometime in the next few days. Recently had the entire rear suspension/bushings redone, underbody surface rust removal/treatment/coating done. Love the new springs plus TMS sways plus Koni yellows.
Next up -- have to get the body rust dealt with (typical E46 spot(s). 172k miles.

As for mine, not directly TO my BMW but FOR my BMW. Hieu and I installed the lift he sold me in my driveway. Pictured is one of the family cars (I wasn't going to test it out on MY car, lol).

Came back from work today and immediately got under and changed my oil, what’s that green bottle/kit I always see members here ordering? I’ve just been using Mobil 1 Extended Performance High Mileage. Either way, managed to barely beat night fall with a wash, as well. Picked up Turtle Wax’s Hybrid Ceramic Wash and was eager to try it, bottle says to wash one panel at a time then rinse lightly with power washer. Beading immediately but had to keep activating the soap in the bucket, wouldn’t keep a lather. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200812/05f3ca267c1969a98c2c57f81c577026.jpg

About damn time! Did you have to use a mallet to persuade it into place? I tried everything to make it easier to fit up but that thing is just a bitch.

To my understanding so correct me if I'm mistaken, but the rears has to be up in the air to relieve pressure to the rear shocks.
I also tried to install my rears bars...….yup....I gave up. What a PIA. Even when the rears were up.....so,......I sold it at E46 Fanatics.
On the other hand, good thing I sold it. The bar would have interfered with my luggage's and other stuffs during my travels to and from Vegas.

Well, after getting my RTABs replaced, I knew an alignment was necessary. I made the mistake of letting firestone take a whack at it. Never ever again. They told me that either I had bent suspension parts or possible frame damage.
Took it somewhere local with a hunter alignment machine and that specializes in wheels, tires, suspension...much better outcome. They did a phenomenal job and even weight balanced the car.
Lesson learned about where to take it...

Spacer fail today. Stock zhp 135 wheels lowered on h&r sport. 12mm worked up front but ripped up my rusted rear fender in the rear. Sooooo 8 mm rear?
Front, success. Rear, fail.
It rubbed in the rear backing out and turning out of my ridiculously steep driveway.
Took rears off and kept fronts on. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200815/98c6510526f5c8f944c7625e9dfff2ef.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200815/b53c148faa4e42b954d22c6056b14a0a.jpg
