I was ready to order them a couple months ago. I think they were under $10/ea, then i went to check out and saw the shipping charges and got pissed off and canceled and forgot to go back.

Since i just learned i may be in need of a bumper grill, i'd have enough to qualify for free shipping :thumbup

It has turned gray from the sun, etc. You can paint it back to black.

Car looks great! Re bumper grill. Not hard to remove Nd spray paint w a glossy black, or just mask all around it (and behind) and spray it on the car. I've done both ways and either works. You'll really notice the difference.

Went to change my engine oil and transmission fluid. Engine oil went as expected. Transmission not so much. Broke the transmission drain bolt :( now to wait for 1+ weeks for a new one to arrive.

I'm not wrong in trying to torque it to 35Nm right?36342

That's a bummer, especially with the 1+ week wait. I'm pretty sure 35nm is the torque spec for A5S 325Z trans drain plug, and 30nm for filler plug.

It's a GS6 37BZ so I'm almost certain it's 35nm for both. I swear I set the torque wrench right but either way it's a two week wait with the car on stands and no trans fluid :( at least due to physical isolation in Australia I can't go anywhere anyway.

I don't get many side by side comparisons to other ZHP's but I had no idea my grille was supposed to be black!!!!

I'm replacing the bumper cover this spring so I guess painting that black needs to be on the list!

A friend came over and noticed something I had learned to ignore: my hood was not flush with the fenders, but lower. We found the little plastic screws that control hood height and adjusted accordingly. What we didn’t realize was we opened up a can of worms which led to me having to readjust my hood locks, only to realize that the hood latch support on my car is missing the plastic tabs that keep the hood latch from poking out of the grille (if any of that makes sense).
Long story short: my hood is nicely flush with the fenders and I ghetto rigged a fix for the hood latch.

I don't have my E46 so I can't test it. But this shit always falls off my CSL trunk. Pisses me off. I figured I would work on getting the threads and basic shape done. Then when I get my car back, or visit JR, try it out then. The groove for the original piece was too small, so the fix was to just make it larger lol The other problem I have is figuring out how to print it sideways. Right now it's printed down, faster, but seems like it could break easily. Printing it sideways will require supports, but iono how TF I'm going to remove the middle portion.

edit:
I tried to print it sideways just now. Nope, can't remove the support in the middle. Ended up breaking it.

Well I feel pretty dumb right now lol, turns out my back right tire had a nail stuck in it and was running constantly 7-10psi under.
Brought the car in to Rauch Auto off of 41 where I usually go to get tires mounted and told them I needed them rotated because I was still caught up in the idea that they were on the wrong side. The owner was extremely meticulous and looked everything over; bushings, tie rods, subframe floor, etc.
Glad to find out it was a simple puncture and he patched it up for a 20. Not sure if I'll ever be returning to my dealer after this, they had the wheels off to balance and never noticed there was a bright silver nail head sticking out then tried to talk me into buying new tires even though mine only have 25k miles on them?
Ride is back to normal now, next step is a suspension refresh :biggrin

I remember when I was a bit younger, I forgot that there was a nail in my tire for a few weeks and then got on the highway...
When I hit 75-80, that sucker popped out which at that speed, had the effect of destroying the tire by the time I came to a complete stop.
Lucky it was in the rear of the car.

Changed the oil. Going to flush the brakes, clutch, and coolant. Also changing the diff and trans fluids. Starting to take the interior out for a complete audio upgrade. Waiting on some components to arrive. Also rebuilding the shifter. Going to order BC coilovers probably tonight along with strut and shock reinforcements. Going to hold off on doing the full bushing treatment for now. Got enough on the list. Haven’t driven the car since October. Love my Jeep and truck, but itching to spiritedly shift some gears.

Looks good, I had the exact same wheel for 6-8ish months.

It felt very similar in thickness to my Coby rewrapped wheel, which is a little meatier than the OE ZHP and M3 wheels, but not a huge margin. Or do you mean the diameter of the wheel is bigger?

I was really impressed with the quality of the wheel, but I just couldn't get used to the flat bottom when I was making turns. Grabbing a straight piece (or worse, the angled portion) when you're expecting a curve was just really weird. The super aggressive thumb slots were awesome on the track since your hands never leave 3 and 9. The easier ingress/egress from the driver seat was also great.

Well, took almost 7 weeks to receive, but the new wheel came today (I'm sure Covid added to the transit time) and it amazing. First of all, it took 10 minutes to unwrap it (it's so well protected for shipment). And probably an hour to remove the old wheel, transfer the bits over to the new wheel, and reinstall it. I erred on the side of caution and disconnected the battery anyway. Jamming that screwdriver in the slots behind the wheel to release the airbag made me have second thoughts.

I’m just spitballing here, but I’m going to *guess* it’s for use in another chassis that shares that same part. e.g., heated wheels were available in the E60, E65, E83, and I think E53 all in overlapping years with late E46s. A 2-pin connector would make sense for heating.

Kinda’ like how our side mirrors have the wiring in place for power folding even though (to my knowledge) that was never an option for our cars. It just simplifies production and the supply chain.

You may be talking about the 3rd connector on the slipring? I used that connector for the paddles on my E46 and the heating element on my steering wheel on my E53.

yes, asking about that 3rd connector (not part of the wheel, its in the harness in the steering column). I wish I'd taken a picture when I had mine apart since I may be causing issues by borrowing images I find on the web. Here's a better "borrowed" pic of that 3rd connector (this image has no pins, but mine had 2 pins)

The image you show is the clockspring without the pins for that connector. They used the same housing probably due to manufacturing costs but you can get the clocksprings with or without that connector populated with the 2 pins. As I mentioned, on my E46, I used those pins for the paddle shift levers on my M3 SMG wheel to control sport mode shifting in my ZF automatic box. On my E53, those pins are used for the heated steering wheel wiring.

Is your heated E53 wheel a 3 or 4 spoke? A few years back I stumbled down the rabbit hole of retrofitting a heated wheel into my X3 (using an E38 7 Series wheel) but if there are 3 spoke wheel options I’d rather look into trying to make that work instead.

Since the ZHP didn't come with optional paddle shifters (at least I don't think), you're saying the wire harness used on my E46 was probably a common harness to the M3 which did have paddle shifters or other steering wheel options - just for cost savings purposes. That would make sense......

I think that's right. (For sure paddles were not an option). But, to install my paddles, I had to buy an SMG M3 clock spring to replace my std zhp one. That allowed the additional wiring harness to connect and make the paddles work.

Mine is the 3 spoke heated sport steering wheel. My X5 is the sport package and had the 3 spoke wheel without the heated element when I bought it from Hendricks. I found this one on fleaBay for $80 and just ordered the new trim for it that was worn on both of my wheels from FCP Euro for $60. I had to buy the pinned clockspring as noted above and the wiring was already there on the X5 for the heating element, just folded back and taped over behind the clockspring.
I also need to buy the heated wheel relay and I was all in for just over $200. Came out looking brand new.

Yes sir. I did the same when I did my conversion with the pinned clockspring and M3 SMG wheel. I made my own harness from the back of the clockspring to the sport mode shifter wiring on the tunnel. It is only 2 wires and both send a clamp to GND when up/down is activated.

Kinda’ like how our side mirrors have the wiring in place for power folding even though (to my knowledge) that was never an option for our cars. It just simplifies production and the supply chain.

I'm still waiting on confirmation but apparently electric folding were an option in Europe, though owners aren't that happy about them because they are almost impossible to source and expensive to replace/repair.

EDIT: It was the SA313 option.

Funny story I actually bought a set of 18" Continental DW in Z4/ZHP fitment back in winter with only 1500 miles or so for $150. Had my friend drive them down from CT. Was waiting for a cheap set of ZHP wheels to mount them on and replace, well, this:

But then those two-piece beauties popped up on CL with decent tires already mounted and I couldn't resist. And before someone asks yes I'll get an alignment. Something is clearly VERY WRONG when the fronts wear out like that on a RWD car lol.

They are Style 78 OEM wheels. Model name is BBS RS801/802. Originally shipped on E46 with Aero kit and Z4.

Ordered the Hoseless Lift Kit from AMMO yesterday afternoon. Was very surprised today to see it sitting on my doorstep almost exactly 24hrs later! Considering I'm in the Chicago area and Larry is based in New York I immediately shot him an email to ask if he did the Bull Run to my house and delivered it himself.
Never tried a waterless wash before but after watching his video on how much research went into the product I pulled the trigger and am very happy that I did now.
Kit came with the FROTHe soap, Ammo Hydrate which is the sealant, a specifically set up aerator and 12 large microfiber towels(6 orange/6blue).
There was a slight hurtle in wiping a microfiber across my paint multiple times without water present, but the "dry" foam the aerator produces provides plenty of lubrication. Wipe-down was easy and when the foam got in-between door panels it evaporated in a couple minutes without leaving residue. Definitely not the greatest on Style 135's having to reach everything with a towel, but still turned out great. For some reason it's only letting me upload one image but after massaging in and buffing out Hydrate the paint has a mirror like finish.
Couldn't be happier with the whole process, from receiving the kit within a day to the final product. Not sure if I'm going to be able to go back to wet washes after this. Only complaint I have now is that I can see all the rock chips and the chipping trim stands out like a sore thumb.

I have to agree about the Indy 500s. I've only put 250 miles on mine and they are in the top tires I've ever had. Super sticky, no tramlining like the Potenzas that were on previously, and pretty quiet in terms of road noise. At $575 after tax, installed, they were a bargain.

RS4s are awesome. They wear like iron, and it takes a lot to get them greasy. They may not be as competitive in autocross because they won’t heat up as quickly as 71Rs/other 200TWs, but their grip and durability make them the absolute best track day tire unless you just shit out money.

I actually heavily considered RS4s to step up from the Indy 500s while maintaining actual tread life, but since pretty much every motorsports event is cancelled I figured I should just stick to what I'm used to. Did you have RS4s? You have Pilot Sports now right? How do they compare?

I never did any performance driving on the PSS, just pushing hard on cloverleaf ramps and backroads. The RS4s only get put on for track events—I picked up a nail and had to replace a tire, won’t risk doing it again since I won’t take a plugged tire on the track. I’m replacing the PSS with Indy 500s for the daily wheels.

CMP Auto Solid RTABs
OEM ball joints for outer upper and lower control arms
OEM bushings on inside

Car feels fantastic, coupled with solid subframe bushings and OE diff bushings.

Now my suspension setup for my car is pretty much complete besides a rear sway. I have stock MSport rear with a Turner 27mm front.

Ahhh almost the entire car is brand new now aside from an engine. There'll be an S54 in my car soon enough...

Haven't had PSS but I'd say wet grip is excellent. Barely different from dry grip. The Indy 500 tread design is an evolution of the RE-11 tread design, which used to be known as their wet/rain performance tire.

Ahh this is the exact rear end setup I've been leaning towards. Currently have 95a poly subframe bushings ready to go in because I'm wary of introducing additional harshness to the cabin. Does it feel like the rubber inner bushings on the control arms are enough to isolate the impacts??

Not sure if this is true of other tires in the UHP/Max Performance Summer category—but—the wet traction for my PSS was great until I hit 5/32” in the rear (new depth is 9/32”, wear bars are at 2/32”), at which point the wet grip fell off a damn cliff.

Driving home from Raleigh in the rain one time I had to change over to backroads because I couldn’t go fast enough on I-40 to not be a hazard for other drivers. And that was before I added camber plates/arms, further reducing my straight line contact patch. They were downright terrifying.

Not as nice as fresh but not as shot as it felt. My RTABs were much worse off.

I would recommend solid subframe bushes over poly. I have seen some pretty drastic failures (I'll try to dig up the pictures). Keep the diff bushings stock rubber and I think there will be negligible NVH introduced.

I got the helical with 3.38 gearing--no clunks, smooth as silk, and does a very nice job of almost eliminating the traction control when on (I sometimes see the light flash, but I never feel power loss).

Step one in the accident repair. Installed those fog light delete plates. Fitment was OK, but not great. Gave same strength back to the broken side (not pictured).

Since I had to take the bumper off I also opened up the air dam for full air flow now that it's starting to get really hot.

From my Blackstone reports, my wear seems to coming close to half of what usual wear is. Especially for rod bearings in the S54. And my oil change intervals are double to triple that of what OCD guys change at. I don’t burn a drop of oil in 13.5k miles so I can tell everything is well sealed and tight! I await patiently for results of this oil for analysis.

M54 is such a hardy engine. Mine never got princess treatment and it held its character from the day I purchased it at 25K miles to the day it was retired at 180K miles. It’s only when I changed cars is when I thought I better monitor it better. lol

@Rovert, do you use LM MoS2 exclusively or have you also tried their Ceratec as well?

It seems that on the old M3F (and probably the new NAM3F) it was sacrilegious to use anything other than TWS 10w-60 (which is seriously good oil, imo).

Been ages since I’ve been on here with any updates, I hope everyone is safe in these crazy times we’re in.

A lot has changed in my life, but I still have my car & actually bought a 2nd ZHP. I bought what once was Cami’s ZHP that has custom cinnamon interior.

Some of the NLA/hard to find/expensive parts have made there way over to my 6 speed now as his car gets restored and put back to stock slowly -
GruppeM intake, ECS billet oil cap, ECS dipstick, Dinan Front & Rear braces are next to be fitted

I’ll be doing an M56 valve cover conversion & a carbon injector cover in the near future too, be safe guys! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200504/6d455db5c805e25a6875cebd361ae687.jpg

I've had luck just using high dilution soapy water mix, dampen a rage and drape over the wheel. Go around "squeezing" and slightly jostling the rag. Again, should only be damp as to not oversaturate the material. Then to finish just ball up part of the rag and drag it over the whole thing to bring up the fibers, same goes for other parts of the car.

That I wouldn’t know. I have no live digital gauges. Each of the coolant and oil gauges on the speedo seem to show me nominal temps all the time even when I’m going balls out.

I’ve got my warmup lights recoded to reflect my oil temp and when all the lights are gone, it means my oil temp is 80°C which is where the engine thermostat kicks in to control engine cooling around that temp. Only then, is when I feel at liberty to ask my engine to do what I paid for it to do. [emoji41]

I have a habit of opening the engine bay up a crack if I notice I’m turning my engine off while it’s at the max of my normal readings so I don’t heat soak the engine bay parts to extremes.

I’m lazy and hardly ever use my DSLR for anything but dog and car pictures anymore, but every time I open up a picture taken by my iPhoneX on my laptop I’m horrified by how different it looks compared to what I saw on the little 5” screen lol. Yeah it’s crazy how much they charge, rumor has it the oem 135 bracket can be modified but I think rotor size becomes an issue.

Idk if I should pony up and go crazy with these, I was going to powder coat them one time, get the brackets, lines, pads.

My 330 rotors are basically new, I have Zimmerman drilled rotors from FCP but when you run 330 rotors there’s a lip left on the brake pad right?

I know this can get expensive and quick lol but I want to do everything correctly.

I haven’t noticed any kid of lip on the pad. Maybe I just haven’t worn any of the pads down far enough yet to notice (aside from the EBC Yellows I absolutely destroyed). And I’m getting a full sweep on the rotor face, so no lip there either. Maybe certain brands of pads are a touch taller/have a little more material?

Or maybe the brackets included in the BMWP kit sold by ECS are slightly different dimensions than the brackets I have from Reboot? Certainly a lot of variables at play.

I got the answer!

Originally someone used stock 135 brackets (modified probably) to install onto an E46 and Thats where the “lip myth” came from, not until other companies fabricated a proper bracket that allows the pads to fully seat the fronts.

Thanks a bunch for the input!

Just a thought, but you could get a thing of touch-up paint and paint the black lens cover Mystic instead. It wouldn’t totally hide it, but it would make the pimple less noticeable.

Currently in the middle of replacing my handbrake cables, jesus christ I hate northern cars. Getting the cable sleeve out of the subframe was damn near impossible, I ended up pulling most of the cable through (mangling it in the process) and ended up cutting it in half, getting it out both ends. Then used a vice grip to extract the plastic sleeve.

Yeah, when the Redish plates were done by the shop 3 years ago I think they may have crossthreaded one of the cable studs or nuts at the lever. As a result when I went to remove the nut, the cable twisted along with it. I'm also rebuilding all of the handbrake hardware (there's basically no shoe material at this point and everything is rusty), and swapping on my Zimmerman rotors, HPS pads, and ATE fluid. Honestly I think if I didn't have to do the cables I'd be nearly done at this point - slightly dropping my exhaust and removing the heatshield, then replacement of the cables (which I'm still not done) has taken me 5 hours so far.

Where did you get those brake cooling ducts? One of my fogs has a small crack and I don't use them anyways, so I'm thinking of deleting them.

Galapolis

Love the HPS pads, been running them for 1.5 years now. They haven't faded on me once, even during extreme tofu delivery I mean mountain carving.

The foglight delete plates are these here: https://www.ebay.de/itm/BMW-3er-E46-M-Paket-2-Blenden-Nebelscheinwerfer-Cover-Lufteinlass-Airintake-/292387227511

They don't ship internationally so I had a friend of mine ship them over. I never contacted the seller though, maybe you can arrange something.

I, too, endured the agony of handbrake cables and Canadian cars. I replaced them when I had the subframe lowered. I can’t imagine doing it with the carrier still attached to the car...

t.er

I'm starting to think that had I dropped the subframe, it would've been much faster (seriously). The handbrake cables seem like such a simple DIY, but there were so many issues I ran into and I'm still not done.

Took me 1.5 hours to remove the driver's cable, then 2.5 hours for the passenger's. That one was significantly more seized, I ended up flush cutting the cable at the entry to the subframe, then hammered in a pick between the subframe and the plastic sleeve at multiple points to collapse it and twisted it out with pliers.

Then when I went to install the new driver's cable, the metal fitting on the end that butts up to the hole in the body for the lever was too big to fit in the rusty subframe, so I had to sand that before it could go in. Then I had to do the same with the passenger's side, but it still does not go in even with significantly more sanding. I'm to the point where I don't want to take more material off, or it'll slip into the hole on the body. I want to sand the hole in the subframe, but there is no space for my dremel, and going by hand will take forever. I think I may pick up a set of small files tomorrow morning, and try using that on the subframe, otherwise I'm not quite sure how to get that fitting in.

Passenger's cable finally out, I think by that point it was in 4-5 pieces:

https://i.imgur.com/YwnuhhRl.jpg

Passenger's plastic sleeve (really surprising how stuck it was in there):

https://i.imgur.com/eWxi6val.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/9ZCgR9Ml.jpg

Sanded fitting (it initially had a faint hex shape on it, I've taken off so much material that it's now round). You can see how close the 2 diameters are, so I have no choice but to sand the subframe. The fitting also separated from the sheathing so I'll have to repair that once it's past the subframe:

https://i.imgur.com/BSJPahZl.jpg

Alas, I'm just really looking forward to getting that last cable in. After that it should be smooth sailing from there *knock on wood*

To follow up with my last post, a lot of fuckery was needed to get the passenger's cable in. I spent a bunch of time wire brushing and filing the hole in the subframe to no avail. So I decided to remove the bushing on the lever-end, by dremmeling the square base flush with the threads, then pulling the bushing out:

https://i.imgur.com/X7Vnbb9l.jpg

Unfortunately the threads were ever so slightly too big for the bushing. So I ended up cutting it off, and reaming out the old one with a drill:

https://i.imgur.com/gHpMO7xl.jpg

Then pushed the cable through the subframe, and stuck the bushing on:

https://i.imgur.com/B3LCKdel.jpg

And, as the square end mates with the lever to prevent the cable from turning, I had to tighten the nut with a vicegrip:

https://i.imgur.com/b9WLv9cl.jpg

Anyways, I did manage to adjust the cables following the BMW procedure to get 2/3 clicks on the lever to get resistance/stopped rotor, even with my stud kit. My car is still on stands and my garage looks like a warzone, so I haven't gotten a chance to test the handbrake on the ground, but it should work.

So 1.5 days spent with just the handbrake, and half a day on getting my SS lines, rotors, and pads in. Excellent

Spent a few days finally getting around to doing the OPG on the X5. It wasn't too hard but dealing with the AWD required diff, axle and complete subframe removal. I'll never understand who thought putting the right front axle through the oil pan was a great idea. Car was up on the QuickJack and engine hanging by the Harbor Freight engine support bar for a solid week waiting on the oil to stop dripping on the left front corner where the seam requires Dreibond sealant.

All in all glad to have it done. All back together and no leaks other than the famous GM A5S390R selector shaft seal. Tool had to be ordered from Germany so maybe next week. It's not like I'm going anywhere.

I made something identical and it had just enough movement to make the videos shaky and absolutely useless. I also didn’t really like having PVC right beside my neck in case something went wrong (ever seen the opening scenes in Final Destination 2?)

I ended up making one that went between the two backseat headrests and the video was much more stable.

Replaced my broken stock rear speakers with used Harman Kardon speakers from a junk yard car. Sounds much better. Even better I only paid $10 a piece for the speakers and the HK speaker covers. So I spent a total $30 for three of them. One more and I can swap out the front door speakers too.

Top is the replacement speaker. Bottom is the original speaker that was in the car.
