Put in the nav bracket over the stock radio bracket so my HVAC doesn't wobble around. It wasn't the right part (again) from ecs but I'm not gonna bother getting another one since all it's missing is the led for the ash tray which I never open anyway. I do like the way it looks like it's meant to be there instead of crammed in.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190403/dc2f3281019d92fddd4f10d7c329278c.jpg

This weekend I abused some consumables.

Over the course of 180 minutes on track I averaged 23L/100km (aka 10.23mpg in Freedom Units) on 93 pump gas. Considering how much time you spend on the throttle at VIR compared to some other tracks I’d say the M54 is pretty frugal on fuel under stress. I wish I’d remembered to clear the cluster’s average speed. Oh well.

Interesting. I get about 8-9mpg on my car at the track.

It wouldn’t surprise me if you’re faster; despite being fully bitten by the track bug (and knowing I’m pretty quick for my experience level), I’m still fairly new to it.

Had some fun. I practiced with the driver's side and I'm going to record the passenger side. The ball joint was super dead. I've noticed a big difference on the road already with only half of the bushings done.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190330/795c8da39c9c167010a98a362d7006e5.jpg

How long did the two on the left take you? We’re they as difficult as the RTAB? I just replaced my RTAB’s with a set of SDW RTAB’s. Thinking of doing Everything in / connected to the subframe soon.... Helps to know which parts are going to require more time.

Thinking of doing Everything in / connected to the subframe soon.... Helps to know which parts are going to require more time.I had an impact and a proper tool set so it took about 10 minutes for each one (the tool was definitely worth the money). The bottom one comes out and goes in easier that than the top, at least for me.

If I had to rate them compared to the RTAB, I'd say slightly less difficult. If you are doing it manually with a ratchet, the space you are working can be a little tight.

Anyone have a need for an Alcantara shift boot in pretty good condition? I replaced mine last year, so this one has been sitting on my bench ever since in the box the new one came in. Might's well pay it forward to some one who could use it. Maybe just cover shipping?

It will also open up a spot on my bench for the next thing that shouldn't be there........

Put my summers on my 330xiA, and swapped the all-season Michelin Premiers, which seemed pretty loud (so bad It sounded like a bad wheel bearing), to my 330xi 6MT DD to use them up (took off the APEX Arc-8’s with Toyo Proxes 4 Plus’s) . That eliminated the steering wheel wobble I was getting at 50-60mph but, strangely, I still get a pulse of wobble when I decelerate through 60-50 mph—nothing when I’m accelerating or cruising at that speed. I’m interested to see if the vibration follows those wheels/tires or if they just exacerbated an issue with my DD’s suspension (worn ball joint?). At this point, I'd have to guess I had a wheel issue AND a brake issue occurring at the same speed.

The Michelin premiers weren’t always so loud but, with almost 20k miles, they seemed to suddenly turn noisy. They’re not wearing too well either, although I'm not sure how much of it is the alignment's fault. The Toyo’s, on the other hand, are performing and wearing extremely well with the same amount of mileage (they look almost brand new), although that was on a different car. I love being able to swap components between cars...

[emoji487], can you take a pic of your car from further away just to see how big the exterior sensors are, if they even make a difference with the size. And what is your thought too with their size?

I miss my TPMS from the ZHP. Mine were inside the wheels which made them more permanent but I like the exterior option.

If they work out well then I'll pick up a set of the internal sensors because (1) they'd look less stupid and (2) they'd get a more accurate temperature reading than at the end of the valve stem.

The good thing is that pressure is pressure so these sensors on the end of the valve stem is going to be just as accurate as something internal.

I've had this style of sensor before. Not only were they inaccurate, more than one sensor would consistently not even register a pressure reading (random ones, not always the same sensors). The final straw was when two of them had to get surgically removed because they seized to the valve stem.

Stoptech street performance pads? That's what I had to do with mine. They're an aggressive compound and you have to regularly remember to rebed them like every month or so, or else you get pulsing brakes. I liked those pads because they were low dust and stopped great and no squeaks at all, but I hated having to rebed them all the time.

I'm on a set of Hawk street pads now, thinking they'd swap well to my hawk track pads and back without needing to rebed, and they do, but even the hawk street pads are squeaky. Not as bad as the race pads, lol, but still, they give me some squeak at lower speeds when I'm mall crawling and idling through town

Not sure yet. It fits perfectly right in front of the cluster, only blocking the clock/odometer spot. So good that it doesn't block any warning lights but I like my clock :(

I've been keeping it in the ash tray slot where it would probably be fine since it's not data that you really need in front of your face. They do have some styles that mount up on the windshield...

Note to self: swap the regular caps back on in winter

They've been fine so far. I was just reading through the broken English in the manual and there's something about them not sending a signal when the car is stopped/under 20kmph. I had turned the receiver off yesterday and fired it up this morning. Took like 1-2 minutes for the first sensor to connect (LR):

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190417/890c9df3c0a7f10bf32787f264fb4ae9.jpg

I just did my regular bedding procedure and they feel good. I still have meh pads on the rear but these are already biting good.

I do 4-6 35-40 mph stops of medium brake pressure. Then 6-8 60-70mph hard stops. Then immediately let them cool completely.

Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using TapatalkI'll have to try that. I did new pads and rotors (Zimmerman) at all four corners and it took some time to wear through the zinc coating, but they still don't bite well and require a lot of pedal pressure. I've only done some light bedding (3 stops from 60 with heavy pressure, then drive to cool) so I probably haven't gotten them hot enough to really transfer some pad material.

Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using TapatalkMan I just went out on a bedding run and they're terrible now [emoji31]

I tried 6 stops from 80-20, then cruised at 70 for 10 minutes and had shit braking power when I went to turn around, so I did 10 quick stops from 60-20 per Zeckhausen (https://www.zeckhausen.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=6446_6443) and got enough heat into them to get some fade on stops 8-10. Then I drove without brakes for 10 more minutes. I didn't touch them until pulling into the neighborhood and they had no bite at all. The pads are still measuring at 150F in the garage so maybe they needed more time to cool?

I don't see any blue on the rotors but it looks like there may be some specks of pad material left on the rotors (other than what scraped into the cross drilled holes) [emoji3525]

Ordered LED bulbs from Illumo (Australian company). They claim that their bulbs will not cause canbus issues or hyper flashing. I'll see, because they're pretty expensive.

Also ordered my subframe repair parts! Solid bushings, and underside + topside plates from CMP Auto Engineering.

Also in the process of designing a set of aluminium pedals. Pending prototype prints/machining will see how much interest there is with my close friends.

Yup. There’s really no reason to buy the gutted one sold by UUC and others. The hard line just connects directly to the hose. It was a piece of cake.

Now that I’ve had a chance to drive it I can say it does make a difference; Not so much on normal gear changes, but definitely when rev-matching on downshifts. The engagement also feels more consistent. Happy I did it.

I got my project car started and running! woohoo! :rockon A new tank of fuel should help it run a little smoother, but so far so good. No shake down drive around the block yet, I damaged the FR brake hose during disassembly so I'm waiting for a replacement. Hopefully it'll be down from the jack stands and be driven around the block this weekend.

Overall, quite relieved that the car runs and it's not puking fluids everywhere. ... it's still early in the process, so fingers crossed!

Just wanted to follow up on this for anyone that comes across it in the future -- I forgot to mention that I replaced the calipers and lines at the same time that I installed the PFCZ pads & Zimmerman rotors. I bled and bled and bled and could not get a good pedal feel UNTIL I hooked up to the car with INPA and did the ABS/DSC bleed process. Got a quite a few air bubbles from that and now my pedal is rock solid. I still don't have a stellar initial bite , but I'll try bedding again now that I don't have air in my lines and see how it goes.

Also, even with air in the lines, these pads are crazy good at stopping the car. Great modulation too -- less initial bite than OE (of course), but pressing the pedal harder makes the brakes grab harder....so...how brakes should work....

Of course! Ask away!

It was fairly straight forward, I’d say the toughest point is removing all the foam backing from the headliner, power tools are great, but only at low speed as you can burn through the headliner pretty easily.

I have been thinking I should do the ZHP as well. Maybe I’ll record that and give a go at a DIY video.

The material came from yourautotrim.com and says it’s U.V. treated. I used foam backed on the headliner and no foam backing on the parcel shelf and pillars.

Replaced the latching/locking motor for the tonneau cover on my 'vert yesterday afternoon. It all started with a call from my wife on Friday....top wouldn't lock in the stowed position and then would not go back up. So, Saturday I spent a little time sipping coffee and reading up. Turned out to be the motor that pulls the cables to lock the cover. Typically the cables that do the latching are the culprit but in this case I was able to narrow it down to the motor that does the latching. Apparently the square shaft on the gear of the locking unit rounded out the plastic of the motor/gear unit that does the locking. Luckily it's a pretty common Bosch motor/gear unit and I found one on Advance Auto of all places. Having a $20 speedperk, it brought my cost down to $37.xx shipped. The motor arrived yesterday afternoon and within a couple of minutes I had the top working again!

Curious to see how you like them compared to the PSS

I’ve already put about 50miles on it and Initial impressions are the ride is better (comfort), quieter and they don’t tramline like the PSS do. But I should also say before I swapped the tires out the PSS were completely worn to the threads so it might not be an accurate or fair comparison because it’s not new vs new. But no complaints so far.

But no complaints so far.

You had me at “don’t tramline.” That’s my only real gripe with the PSS.

tramline could be a result of the square wheel set-up. I had experienced it before with a 245 section width front tire and hence why I have not made the switch from the 225.

Yup! Tram lining is a result of a lot of factors with type of tires being one of them. I’ve read somewhere that jaguar project 8 doesn’t have wider front tires than what it does currently because of tramlining...

My PS4S don't really tramline at all even with 255's on the front, but yeah the worn down PSS's that came on the car were chaotic on the highway. You've been due for new tires for like 2 years tho...

Two new rear tires last week. Continental DWS. The Continental DWS replaced had 13K miles and 5/32" tread remaining. It had recently passed inspection. I replaced them because of hydroplaning a couple of times and lighting up the dash lights on rutted interstates when raining. I had to hold it down below 55 mph or else it broke lose a bit and lit up the dash lights. I kept 39 psi in the rears so it was not a case of low inflation. Now steady as a rock in the rain with the new rear tires.

I swear no matter what they all seem to seep.

In other news - Installed a full set of DEPO clears with stealth turn signal bulbs. Fitment is good with everything except the sidemarkers which don't sit perfectly flush against the fenders. OEM look like their trimmed with a rubber gasket against the edges to fill the gap where the DEPO's are not. Close enough for now though.

Put on the Arc-8s/RS4s, bled brakes, topped off fluids, and gave a quick wash for another weekend of doing Racecar Shit [TM] in the beautiful rolling hills of southern Virginia.

Still need to run a cold start test to confirm my CEL is coming from the SAP/EGR check valve. Stupid emissions crap.

Seen one, you seen 'em all but here's a pic

But it’s impossible to tire of seeing a clean TiAg ZHP with Arc-8s, so keep posting.

Changed a brake pressure sensor. Surprisingly easy due to being right hand drive. Required no disassembly aside from removing the old sensor. Lost very little brake fluid.

Noticed my KWV1s appear to be misting or weeping on the front shocks. Not sure which direction to go now. My local supplier has offered me bilstein coils at a discounted rate which is an option I'd be willing to consider. All I'd have to change would be the rear springs/perches. Or...

Fortune Auto, MCA, KWV2s, BC, H&R, Eibach. I don't know. My body leans towards bilstein, since my neighbour works for Bilstein Asia Pacific.

For DD, I haven’t heard of anything. For track days, I’ve heard guys stretch a rubber glove over it. Keeps the splatter contained.

Replacing the o-ring worked for me.

Wheels arrived on Thursday and were promptly mounted this morning before my work meeting. Then upon returning home, I found a turbo sitting on my front porch.

Still waiting on my intercooler to ship, and then I can install my big pile of parts and make 350whp on a 1.8L engine!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190614/e07a97b47e353d0d5fbd92be9d57c8d3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190614/08e6b0863b1a8ca7aa3a18d2a7f88508.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190614/18d7d9f872e00fbfe2bb6707d67aead7.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190614/cc415e0a583e1d36be4da54913dc80c6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190614/5ede820eeef3a0f77d7924a95b3c5166.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190614/336a859783cab6b4cb783d08672c06db.jpg

Replacing the o-ring worked for me.Fine. Y'all got me all fired up about this and I dug around the garage until I found the o ring that I had bought like a year ago

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190614/f9f1d2ba8fc965172fcef60cc01f54af.jpg

Changing it out is, of course, stupid easy. It actually took me a minute to find the o ring because it just looked like part of the cap. It had been hella flattened by xx years of being pressed against the angled sealing face.

Before - notice the 45deg flat at the base of the cap - that's the o ring

After - nice round boi

Replacing the o-ring worked for me.

It’s not the o rings that leaks. There’s a hole in the cap to vent when the pressure is too high, so it is DESIGNED to leak.

Yes, replacing the o ring will help if it’s failed, but the hole is in the cap intentionally.

Checked the oil level because little over 3K miles after getting the opg done the yellow oil light came on when turning off the car after a short drive. At the time of the ogp fix the entire middle block/rectangle in the dipstick was covered and now its down to the bottom of it, so will have to take it in sometime to hunt the leak down.

Spent the better part of the weekend stripping all the factory hot crayon sound-deadening, tar and insulation from the rear seat, trunk and shelf and replaced it with Dynamat and 1/2" Dynaliner. Took the opp to re-dye the shelf while is was out and install UHMW (teflon) tape where the louver contacts the mount points. Totally worth the effort as the smell is completely gone and the road noise is noticeably quieted.

Where/what does this refer to - "louver contacts the mount points?" I need to look into the bass rattle of my coupe's rear shelf (got some tennis balls, but need to find out how/where to use them!) Nice work!

Thanks!

Just below the bottom of the back glass the steel panel has raised areas and those make contact with the molded-in support ribs of the louver. I installed adhesive Teflon tape on the steel panel areas to minimize and hopefully eliminate any potential squeaking from movement.

Unfortunately I didn't take any pics of that specific part of the install but in the second pic of my post you can see those raised areas on either side of the square cutouts. I believe there were 12 all together.

Link to the tape here (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00823JBVG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Any UHMW type adhesive will work though.

I see the raised areas with red paint & the black plastic "louver" in the next to last photo now. Haven't had mine apart yet to be familiar with all the pieces. Thought about using the non-sticky (loop) side of Velcro to cushion the parts back there, but will look into the Teflon tape.

Imo, there isn't any room back in that area for anything of any substantial dimension height-wise. It's pretty tight and I didn't want to put any additional pressure on the glass and louver, just create a low friction surface.

See my previous post for the link to the type of tape I used.

I didn't see a link for the tape, but Googled it. It comes in several widths/lengths. Looks like it needs to be ordered vs. bought at big box places.

That display assembly looks a lot like the crappy display the E39 MID's have from that era. It wouldn't surprise me if they have similar issues down the road. I took one look at how the ribbon is attached to the LCD and starting having flashbacks to when I tried to swap my ribbon cable. LOL

The mirror ribbon cables are much more fragile than the display ribbon cables... go figure. If you've ever swapped a keyboard in a laptop, you can do this. They have the same style connectors.

Is there a more robust mod that we can make better? Like actual soldered wires that can handle the heat and cold of flexing?

Well I'm glad they sorted out the attachment mechanism, because the attachment mechanism on the E39's MID is beyond ridiculous. The ribbon sits on top of the contacts and then gets folded over and held in place by a single-use slide-on "bridge" of sorts. Most definitely single use.

Needless to say I destroyed not only the bridge upon reassembly, but also cracked the contacts on the LCD due to having to apply pressure to this stupid crimp thingy to get the cable to hold in place. Ugh!

Off work today. Oil change due and I had bought a new oil level sensor since I've never gotten a dash warning since I bought the car last year. Yes, the dash warning light works during the key on startup check. So anyway, a little back story and the reason I suspected a bad level sensor...

I met the owner when picking up the car and pulled the dipstick. Barely reading at the bottom. Dumped in 2 quarts when I gassed up and brought it up between the add/full marks. Over the next 2 days and 1800 miles I added 3 more quarts. Each time the oil level was at or below the add mark but I never got any dash warnings.

So today I replace the sensor and purposely only add 5 quarts and start the car to mimic a low oil condition. Still no warnings. Dammit. Screw it. Topped it off.

I then have been wanting to adjust the OCI so I plug in with PASoft and change it and while I'm there I noticed the IKE has options to enable/disable warnings for oil consumption and oil loss.

35317

Long story short, is it possible that the level sensor was good all along but the input was disabled in the IKE module?

Btw, since I've started using Amsoil for my oil changes, my consumption has dropped to 1 quart every 4500 miles vs 1 every 600 when I bought it. Better/more detergents that unstuck the oil rings maybe?
