intriguing... let me look into it! what do you think looks better the standard or opaque?

Standard because the style matches the silver reflectors more when they’re off and the LEDs are all close and bright enough, you’ll barely see the individual light sources.

Opaque are a solid “sand blasted like” white around the ring so they’re a lot more highlighted in white when the halos are not on. But if you like a super uniform light spread then maybe that’s for you.

Crystal are closer style to F80/F10 angel eyes. Much more modern but the depth of the rings require dremeling the inside headlight trim to fit.

Got any pics of them on a facelifted coupe? I'd only consider it if they aren't fully circular giving the impression that my car has snorted cocaine and is now high as a kite.

All ZHPs are high. It’s in their nature. [emoji23]

Every time I’ve seen this picture I have the same reaction: damn son that’s mean as hell!

I love amber/yellow/halogen angel eyes. Regardless of being “period correct” I just think they look better.

It was so bad in there.

Sadly not recuperating as fast as I would like. Still on crutches and in more pain than last time.

The bikes are as follows.
1980 Yamaha XS650. Kind of a rat build. That one is mine. Don’t know if I’ll ever be able to ride again, but I’m holding on to it just in case.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181218/fc2401eb5fcd013a2dcfa62e49c57788.jpg

1981 Yamaha XS400. Build in a cafe style. Belonged to a friend who moved and had to leave it behind. It’s now mine too. Thinking about selling it since I have the title now.

1982 Honda Nighthawk. Was letting someone work on it in my garage when I was building the other 2. It’s a tracker style. Probably the dumbest bike to make one out of, but to each their own. I build the frame, made new trays, skins, and wiring harness and other related odds and ends. Then he stopped showing up after my back went out. I am about to have that one towed to his house and dropped off.

Sweet! I like the old bikes. I'd love to get my hands on an early CB750
Hang in there my friend! It took about 3 months for me to recover from my last back episode.
Hold on to that bike! I got rid of my dirtbike before I moved down here. I wish I still had it.

Thanks guys! Super excited to not be freezing my cajones off when I get to my car every night.
Yes trying to get it as factory as I can. Technically, the beige lower dash won’t make it a factory look, but I always said if I was having the lower dash come out I make a full change over to cinnamon. Not having the heated seats was almost a blessing in disguise as the carpet is definitely one of those “while you’re at it” jobs. If the seats never had to come out I don’t know if I would have gone through the trouble of converting the carpet.
Once I get it back, which might be tomorrow, I’ll start sourcing out the lower trim pieces around the doors in black so I can complete the look.
I know beige on a zhp isn’t too common but if anyone is in need of non heated sport seats for an e46 project, let me know.

coupe over here. dying to finally get some angel eyes. Anyone heard of the brand 'Switchback'? Someone showed me it actually flashes amber with your turn signals... pretty cool feature. What brands do you guys recommend now that Khoalty doesn't make em anymore? I've heard Umnitzas are good.Hey, i have switchbacks installed! The brand is not switcback, that is the type of angel eye. I absolutely love them! They act as a turn signal and they even flash with the high beams. The brand I have are ijdmtoy's. I highly recommend!! The quality was phenomenal, you could tell as soon as you got your hands on the box. I can snap some pictures later if you'd like.

Yeah that'd be great! I'm probably gonna go with Trevor's guy, seeing as how a 30% discount would be pretty lit. Definitely going the turn signal method as I doubt amber halos would look good on my silbergrau. If it were white black or red, I think it would look niiiice

I did all of that under jackstands. Not a lot of fun but not terrible. My Harbor Freight tranny jack helped a lot when dropping the exhaust.

Today I put my Coby wheel back on, and finally fixed my ambient temp sensor. The Napa flat bottom steering wheel will go up for sale after Christmas.

Ran my data logger today on the car. It started throwing codes and having limp mode hissy fits earlier in the week. Logger shows misfires on banks 3, 5, and 6. Plus the infamous P16A7 code. However, I have cats. So.... I'm suspecting a bad MAF or coils. We'll see. Gonna take some time later in the week to dive into it a bit with a multimeter and see what's afoot.

I followed up on a local craigslist listing for an ECS Tuning carbon fiber strut brace and some other miscellaneous parts. https://nh.craigslist.org/pts/d/nashua-e46-parts-cf-strut-brace-among/6779456051.html

Nice guy, and nice condition brace that he wanted $120 for it (currently $162 on ECS https://www.ecstuning.com/b-ecs-parts/ecs-carbon-fiber-strut-bar-kit-black/ecscf03bw03aceb/). His ZHP sedan had been hit while parked on the street and totaled :( I tried to get it for $100, but he said he needed $120 cash. He really was really happy that I wanted it since he wanted it to go to an enthusiast, and he said he had a few other parts he'd throw in.

So for the $120, I got the brace, a brand new expansion tank, and a new Hengst filter..... Seemed like a great deal

But it raised a question on the expansion tank.... it's clearly never been installed, but the only marking on it is PA66 GF 30. When I look that up, a get a million hits for all kinds of parts!

Looking for some help:

1) What does the PA66 GF 30 designate, and
2) does the OEM expansion tank have a part number stamped on it (mine should be 17117573781)?

DeathTrap
12-31-2018, 06:51 PM
1) PA66 GF 30 is a designation for fiber reinforced plastic. It says what the expansion tank is made of.

2) Not sure on that

Tried to start it yesterday and it’s dead!

That being said, I called today for prices to replace the eight year old battery.

First I called NAPA because, that’s what the eight year old one is. Two choices with a begged for discount. $165ish & $190ish. I then called my local BMW steetership. Once I gave him the vin and he calculated my BMWCCA discount and took off the core that I will bring with me. He gave me a price of $130ish out the door. And Alabama has like a 9% sales tax.

Looks like I’m going back to OEM![emoji3]

Noob question. What’s the difference?

Things that I've read:
AGM batteries for the most part don't need to be vented. They also give you more of the battery's useful life, as in, they'll function properly up until the very end, instead of giving you problems as they get weaker. I believe they have better performance characteristics in the cold as well.

These are just things I've read about it when I was about to make the same decisions on lead-acid vs AGM. Needless to say, I went with AGM on both my cars.

DeathTrap

Also, AGM batteries don't "spill" like flooded batteries, so you can mount them in any orientation.

I’m intrigued by the “smell nice patches.” What do they smell like, and where were they placed?

This is what they used: Wonder Wafers, new leather air freshener. To me, it smells like vanilla but my wife doesn't like it. They put 4 patches : 3 in the front doors pockets and 1 in the center console next to the brake handle. They are small, 2" by 2".

They had the car 4.5 hours. The man said they usually charge $150 but my car was fairly clean so the price went down to $120.

If you have room in between the ceiling and open garage door:

StoreYourBoard Cargo Box Ceiling Storage Hoist | Rooftop Carriers Hi-Lift Garage Pulley Hanger Rack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079Q6VBTP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_5c-qCbWAY9JJV

If you get lucky with joist placement it’ll be perfectly aligned to lower onto the roof racks and to remove.

I rebuilt my rears. And am running slotted discs with matching pads to the front.

Fronts I wasn't bothered with. This kit I have is quite affordable for a BBK. Around $1000 if not a bit more, and runs standard M3 sizing front discs.

I would do something a little like Trevor recommended but hung from the wall instead of the ceiling. Use ratchet straps or bungees to create a hang point around the Thule, but hang it from a Rubbermaid Fast Track high enough on the wall to be out of your way.

If you fab up a way to combine the roll-top Euro tray and cup holders please let me know.

Depending on how picky you are about condition I still have most of my black console in a box in the closet. I’m never going back from the armrest-delete so I’d be happy to find it a new home.

You can see the other ones they have here. https://www.schmiedmann.com/en/bmw-E46/catn-ol?q=hitch

I don't have the bumper on yet because one of the bumper bolts broke. So I have to get another rear bumper carrier or try to take the broken bolt out.

Also, does anyone have a rear diffuser? I am looking for one and a roof rack.

Turn around time was quick too- I think it was just under 2 weeks. I fully recommend them. For anyone else looking to order, this is black/ natural. I ordered swatches of this and black/ beige. Installed my new Alcantara Coby Wheel as well as the brake boot. I also have the shift boot waiting, but my arms were too sore to pull that thing out today.

I'm really glad I went with the dove gray alcantara over black or leather. I was getting tired of the cheap ebay wrap I had on there and was debating between ordering a leather or alcantara wheel. I choose alcantara because I figured the ZHP would likely be the only car I own that has alcantara, so I may as well enjoy it.

I also got a nav mounting bracket from ECS, which will be going in within the next few days. Last step to finish off the interior would be getting some M6 seats, but I still need to convince myself i'll be able to install them if I buy them.

Well got Heinz back today, ended up having to change MAF as well since after everything was done rpms were pretty shaky at low rpms. But now I feel power all around the rpms, especially after 4000, it's like VANOS KICKED IN YO! Anyways it feels super smooth and very responsive.

m6 seats are not hard to install, simply remove the outer seat rail from your seat and install your seat rail onto the M6 seat and it will bolt into the car. wiring is plug and play with the seat connector. very simple install

Do you know if the M6 seats are dimensionally larger than the M3 seats? The inside bolster on mine rubs ever so slightly against the center console, making a tiny rubbing sound when going over bumps. It annoys the shit out of me.

yes they are physically wider and more comfy but my friend that has them said he didnt notice any squeak. everyone has different levels of acceptable noise and annoyance tolerance so you have to start gauging the people that make their claims along with the claim itself... my buddy doesnt have huge OCD and small things dont bother him so i would not be surprised if there is noise and he just doesnt "hear" it

your level of "annoying" may not match his level lol

That’s fair. I also hear cabin noise because I seldom have the radio on (I enjoy listening to the Magnaflow symphony in M54 Major with aFe accompaniment).

One other variable I thought of is my having an armrest delete. It might be rubbing in a place a normal armrest console wouldn’t, who knows.

May be pushing the bolsters out because you have them inflated to the max? Console dimensions shouldn't differ.

I thought about that too but it’s actually the passenger side that rubs, not my seat (which is the one with the bolsters maxed). Maybe I should just go back to regular sport seats since the Schroth Quickfits hold me in place on the track, negating the need for the M3 bolsters.

[/QUOTE]m6 seats are not hard to install, simply remove the outer seat rail from your seat and install your seat rail onto the M6 seat and it will bolt into the car. wiring is plug and play with the seat connector. very simple install[/QUOTE]

My issue is finding the time while also sourcing the seats, whenever I see some available I’m at school/work 7 days a week and when I have time there is nothing. Hopefully I’ll have some luck over the summer.

LOL my FCP shipments are always beat up. But I guess if the contents is still in one piece I hold my tongue.
One thing I will applaud FCP on is that, even with free shipping, it only takes like a week to get to me in seattle
perhaps Fed Ex is the one to applaud on that one

A box arriving damaged is hardly FCP's fault, as long as the contents are good...
I'm curious what the inside looks like. In think the internal packaging is what people were having issues with.

True shipping is a process with more than one responsible party.

But on the first go around they threw the gallon of antifreeze on top of the plastic parts expecting the two pieces of packing paper to maintain.

This time it was replacement radiator hose and expansion tank as the first ones shipped leaked for some unknown reason, cough shipping.

Lost most of the gallon of antifreeze putting the old hose/expansion tank back in.

Easy diy made a pita. Still better than an e60 550i alternator bracket gasket.

I’d take correct contents over damaged packaging, I ordered a bracket from ECS and so far I’ve gotten 3 wrong ones. Hopefully I get the right one soon.

It’s definitely a recurring theme that could be made better if the warehouse guys used the space between their ears when packing. The boxes are always too big for the contents, or zero filler is used.

I followed Nate’s suggestion for my last purchase and made two separate orders. All the fluids in one order, and all the sharp pokey bits that could pierce said fluids in a second order.

I know a while ago, the FCP Euro account here responded to the complaints about shipping and said they will look into what they can do to improve the process, or something like that. I wonder what the status of that is.

Rear bumper was scratched by someone on the right side. Been living with it for almost a year. Recently someone scratched the left side but fessed up to it. Thanks to their insurance, today I have a scratch-free bumper! I took off the c/f diffuser so that nothing would happen to it at the body shop. (Not the best pic).

Technically verts did not have csl trunks so an operation called Status Gruppe M or something close to that (Mike Mig) made them for verts. Too high a price for me new, I found a used one at a good price. The edges and back were left c/f, the rest was painted red. I of course had the red painted black.

Assuming you’ve checked the door seal, sunroof drains (if it’s not a slicktop), and vapor barrier?

Also a box fan can be incredibly useful for wet floorboards. My X3 has a vapor barrier leak and the box fan dried it out overnight.

Is the vapor barrier torn in the door, and is the wiring seal from the door into the body bolted in snugly? That's where I was getting from in my car.

I also picked up a touring on the 15th, and I'm loving it. It's a curse, I already have $2k+ worth of parts purchases planned for it.

The E39 Touring I ended up with is great and everything, but there are so many more resources out there for the E46 platform. Oh god, those eBay/AliExpress headlights were a cry for help!

Trust me when I say, it was complete happenstance I even bought the car... I’ve just been on LetGo constantly to sell a bunch of project cars me and my brothers have just had enough with and you know, typical bmw-guy stuff
Always have to search the following “BMW wagon, touring, bmw E46, BMW 325” just for shiggles

- the reason for this above all else is, that’s how I scored my full option E46 M3 seats since they were listed as “BMW 330 seats”

Saw the ad for well below market value so I promptly contacted him to view the car, needed a major interior rehab which I’ve done my best with and I have to say E46’s clean up particularly well.

Point is after pointing out it needs a Center Support Bearing & New Fan Clutch, I got my wagon ridiculously cheap because the guy didn’t know anything about BMW’s lol [emoji1688]... The car has some issues that I want address on here with you guys first since I’ve never encountered them before and not to sure how to proceed. I’ll see if I start a thread for the car later on this week

Poor weather has had me shy away from the checking the most notorious of culprits, as soon as we get some sunshine here in NY (or a day above 40) I’ll continue my search! I’ll keep the fan in mind

If it is torn, I have a full set of 4 vapor barriers from my previous sedan so those will live on in my wagon lol

I don’t want to turn my wagon into a project considering I have enough spare parts to make it look like a true enthusiast car again lol my sedan is my true money pit

Rebuilt the DISA and cleaned out the ICV on the Touring after work yesterday. It's idling and running a lot better/smoother now, since the O-ring on the OE DISA was shot. I forgot how awful getting those stupid clamps lose on the intake boots was.

There are still vacuum leaks, which I know is going to be the CCV, which leads me to my next conundrum. Do I want to swap over the SULEV M56 Valve Cover and eliminate the CCV, or just replace it? I honestly don't know how much longer this engine will be in the car (pricing out M54B30s and S54s), probably only 1-2 years more.

Brakes are still atrocious, front struts are basically dead, and the engine mounts are shot. On the bright side, I already have the 330i calipers and carriers sitting, just waiting for rotors and pads. Gotta replace the mechanical fan with an electric fan too...

They’re awful...my flexible extension isn’t magnetic so I kept dropping sockets in the engine bay when tightening/loosening those band clamps. I ended up JB Welded an extra 6mm (or whatever size it is) socket to a flex extension, and now it’s a dedicated tool.

Not sure I wanna try launch mode, but nice to know it's there.

The 535 is a great complement to the ZHP. Super comfortable cruiser, with enough power to move effortlessly, but not enough to get me into trouble. Tried the 528, but it was a little weak. The 2.0T is a great engine in my wife's 328, but the 5 is a bit heavy for it to move with any grace.

Nice to have a choice...

I'll hopefully start buying all the preventative stuff this year, before I decide on a motor to open up and rebuild. The extent of the rebuild is where I'm having the most difficulty deciding.

If it makes you feel better, I'm pretty sure my wife has dinged ever car that I've owned.

Ouch- This was a first, but I ended up finding a perfect fender at a bmw yard and eventually had fun replacing it.

Sedans are so perfect and would take the S54 with ease. What I miss the most about my sedan with no folding rear seats is how much slower my coupe takes to transition from one direction to another. I can feel there is more flex in the cabin because it has much larger holes than a sedan door opening. It is far more fun to zig and zag with a stiff sedan chassis over what I have now. Maybe I just need roll bars and something else to make the chassis less twisty.

Haha it you lived in Vancouver, I would take serious thought! I was already driving a forum member's ZHP sedan 6MT one evening last week and I was just having such a great time looking back at the 8 years I owned my ZHP sedan. First shift out of the driveway was like this car was mated to me immediately. Some people need a couple blocks to get used to doing something they did before, I just needed to feel the engine start and I was immediately connected to the ZHP Matrix. My life is going into a slight gaussian blur right now and I need to stop.....

If you're talking about an S54 rebuild, you're gonna be spending some serious coin. I'd just get one that's already been addressed with the important stuff.

Perhaps a rear strut bar could help?

Perhaps a rear strut bar could help?Aware of the cost, and willing. The S54 won't be a short term build. I'm intending to start the rebuild process in the next two years, but don't see it ending for at least five.

Unless my motor cakes it before then.

First of all, car and wheels look awesome. 2nd, I personally like BMW caps on BMWs, regardless of the wheels, but that's just me. (unless they are BBS). Generally I like the red caps for a red car. I actually have red from my EC-7s if you want. BUT, for some reason I am loving the black caps. In fact, if I ever do apex caps I would want those. We should actually trade my reds for your blacks if you wanted some. I'd just have to find them.

Bummed that happened, but "my car just asked me...." is the best line by far I've seen on the mafia this year. Cracking me up. My car asks me things all the time. Said in a Dr. Ruth voice, "the key to a successful relationship with your car is to anticipate it's needs and provide for it...". lol

Hey John, if you want Black Apex caps you can have mine for the low low cost of shipping. My Arc-8s are only for track use, and most tracks require removal of center caps so mine are just sitting on a shelf in the garage.

Dropped of my Arc-8 to have the new RS4 mounted at (what appears to be) a very nice BMW/Mini/MB specialty shop.

Tomorrow I’m going to a different indie to have my track tech inspection completed. They are more performance/race oriented and offer very cheap tech inspections for CCA members. I haven’t shopped around for mechanics since moving so hopefully these two do good work.

This weekend I abused some consumables.

Over the course of 180 minutes on track I averaged 23L/100km (aka 10.23mpg in Freedom Units) on 93 pump gas. Considering how much time you spend on the throttle at VIR compared to some other tracks I’d say the M54 is pretty frugal on fuel under stress. I wish I’d remembered to clear the cluster’s average speed. Oh well.
