34041I got out on the highway today with my non-fairing-ed Thule rack and was shocked at how quiet it was. I can hear a slight whistle around 35mph with the windows down, but you really have to look for any added wind noise at 80mph.

That’s the first thing I ripped out when I bought my car... a BMW should smell of fine leather not an old shoe :)
Restored the passenger door pull. 15 minutes to carefully mask the door, a little Krylon black satin paint, and a new switch plug. Great result:

Thanks! I did the same on my dash trim and shifter surround a year or two back, and it's held up really well. Technique is just 4 light coats, waiting a couple of minutes between coats. I was afraid to do more because it may lose detail.
I did NO sanding--just clean with a damp cloth.

Did you do any kind of clear coat over it? The only reason I have not “restored” mine yet is because I’m worried about durability (I’ve used spray paint a lot for things around the house like changing all the brass hardware to black, painting light fixtures, etc. and spray paint just isn’t very durable).
I’m also hoping to stumble upon a bargain silver set of armrests, but that’s a different story.

No clear coat. The stuff I did previously has held up well, particularly the shifter surround, which sees the most action. I don't have ANY chips/scratches--it still looks as good as the day I did it.
The way I look at it, this cost me under 10 bucks for paint, and the time it takes to mask the doors or remove/replace the dash trim, which is a great trade off for the improved looks. If I have to do it again in another year, I don't mind. If I added up the time for ALL of it, it's probably less than 2 hours invested.
It's kinda like headlight restoration.

Yes, but the concern is the more layers you put over the original cube you’ll lose the texture, and the way light refracts off the cube texture is what makes it so visually appealing and interesting.

I sprayed an old set of silver sure trim previously, using light coats. You lose a lot of the 'pop' from the cubes, but they are still visible.

5w-20 oil? not trying to turn this into an oil discussion, because we all know where that leads, but I don't think Mobile 1 makes LL-01 oil in that weight...
otherwise, it sickens me how much they mark-up parts. Also, 3 hours for FCABs?! should take 45 minutes MAX if you have a lift and the proper equipment.

4.6 hours for OPG seems low as had always been quoted around 7 of labor so I’m guessing they misallocated some hours.
As for the oil, if anything its the amount that caught my eye as being high but i could be totally wrong.

Ugh. Gave my hazard switch to NYRhockey and bought myself a replacement switch. Turns out this is one case where the OEM brand (Febi) is NOT the same as OE. :shifty
The lighting for the door locks is more red than the rest of the interior.
Genuine BMW, broken switch:

What a stupid difference, but it bothers the crap out of me. The Genuine switch is a laughable $40+!
Guess I'll be returning this one to FCP and buying a used switch off eBay...

When my thermostat failed recently, I noticed that the PO replaced the original with Febi (I think) which had the bmw logo scratched off. I bought a genuine BMW thermostat to replace it and it had a bmw logo as well as wahler (I think). Basically they are not made by the same company and makes me think that just because the bmw logo is scratched off of a part, it doesn’t mean that it is an OE part.

If that was the case, it never would have had the BMW logo on it to begin with. They don't make a part just to scratch the logo off. lol

Well ya. The most likely reason is that they were once an OE supplier and BMW decided to change suppliers later, so instead of retooling they just decided it was cheaper to scratch the logo after the part is made. It is also possible that the part they make now might not meet BMW standards.

Yep. They said my car was worth $4,200 when they tried to total it. Said it was a non-sport 330i with wood interior and leatherette seats. One lady said “frankly sir you don’t know what you’re talking about” when I told her that could not have been a less accurate appraisal if she tried. They tried to tell me I could not take it to a shop of my choosing. They tried to replace my headlight with a non-HID unit. The 3.64 differential was a blast. Way better acceleration, most of course was in third.
Initial launch is just all wheel spin until I shift before the first cones
Child 2 liked the rev limit in 2nd.
Current tires are DWS 06 all weather. just need more grip. Next season is going to Potenza or Hoosier.

Autocrossed for the first time last weekend. I had less understeer than expected and fuel starved the car a few times since I only had 3/8 of a tank.
Here is my last and fastest run of the day. Criticisms Welcome. I Also rolled 100k on the way to the autocross.

I just installed it last weekend and tested it yesterday. Ran it down to the low fuel light on a track with several long right handers with zero issues.

Nothing personal but you should work on your hand placement. Arms should never cross each other but move fluidly around the wheel ( no shuffle steering )

Replaced the fuel tank breather valve on the touring and reset the CEL. Finally passed emissions, got it registered.
But, my favorite thing I did today... I changed the stupid US tail light coding to the euro style. From the factory, for some reason the US tourings had both the brake lights AND the turn signals come on when both braking AND while using the turn signal. This is the stupidest configuration possible, and is essentially what the American cars do. Not only that, but the lights are all red, which is also idiotic.
I switched it to the euro coding, which is a dedicated brake light and turn signal. The turn signal is still red, but I aim to change that down the road with the clear turn signal lamps, just like the actual euro cars.
So much better! Previously, the top sections above the LED running lights would also be lit in this scenario.

Hey guys, last mod was around a month ago, the AA headers (loving them)
But now looking around for a refresh of bushings all over, found a nice deal on garagistic bushings, but still missing the sway bar ones. And a question comes to mind, when looking into the rear sway bar, is it 18mm? Because it says NON SPORT, are these right for our beloved ZHPs? Are they 18mm or 22?
Thanks guys!

With FCP Euro supplied parts and my Indy Mechanic's labor, replaced cooling system including radiator, water pump, theromstat (had soft failed), expansion tank, hoses, and temp sensor. Also replaced leaky VCG, and "while you are in there" the spark plugs and one coil which broke during removal. Finally, replaced leaky OFHG.
May sound like a lot, but considering I bought this vehicle on the cheap a year and 11K miles ago (at 155K, now at 166K miles) and have only done a couple of oil changes up to this point, I was happy to put this money in to keep this one on the road and running reliably well!

If you're not going to drive it in the winter, then why are you worried?
Or are you saying you won't drive it in the snow, but on those occasional sunny 50F days in winter?

Meh... as much as it pains me to say it, this is the single situation where all seasons makes sense. Unfortunately...
... the touring had a flat this morning that could not be inflated. That makes 2 out of the 4 Style 5's inoperable (one has a bend, won't hold air). The (2) Style 32's on the back are actually dangerous to drive on as they are extremely old, extremely bald on the inside, and have cracks/cuts deep enough to see the belt on the inside. The ZHP has worn out winter tires... and guess which car I had to take today, THE day it's going to snow with salt on the ground? :facepalm

Took the X3 to my indy for an oil change. While I was there, one man driving a ZHP silbergrau vert stopped by and asked the manager if he would like to buy the car. It obviously needed some TLC: damage on front bumper plus black paint peeling on the wheels. The manager passed, he already has 7 projects going on and is running low on parking space. I didnt ask his price, but I assume it also has mechanical issues since he was trying to sell to a shop.

hot tip for the bleeder screws - use 1-2 wraps of teflon tape on the threads. even new bleeder screws don't seem to seat well on E46 calipers... after using said tape on my fresh calipers and new bleeder screws on the Touring, and then motive pressure bleeding - the brakes never felt so good. and no Forever Bubbles.

My brakes feel like trash. There's about an inch to inch and a half (25-35mm for people who use real units ;) ) of travel before they grab. Not sure if it's the compound or the fluid. The fluid does look like sweet tea lol.
Anybody use one of those one-man bleeder kits on the E46?

I have stock pads and rotors and they have excellent initial grab at the expense of brake dust. I drove a friend’s zhp with stock rotors with hawk pads (I think) and they lacked initial bite but don’t produce as much brake dust as stock pads. When I swapped brake fluid which was 3 years and 50k miles old and it made almost zero difference to braking performance in day to day driving.

Unfortunately staggered. I'm still looking to trade a set of fronts for my rears... but I do run square 225 tires on all four corners and do rotate them front-to-back since they're directional. Blizzak WS-80's
I have to use spacers to clear the Wilwood calipers.

Yep, that’ll be plenty. My ET38 Arc-8s clear the obnoxiously big 135 calipers without issue. Actually I remember test fitting San’s ET40 17x8 and I think they cleared too. I get rubbing if I have my 3mm spacers up front (235 tires, effective ET35), but don’t get rubbing on my CSLs (effective ET32.5, 225 tires. I’ve given up trying to advance my understanding of all that stuff.

I actually look forward to swapping because my winters are Style 68's, which look awesome on the E46!
You should source yourself some wheels you actually like so you can enjoy "the look" year round. :)
The 'look' of the CSL knock-off is a hard shoe to fill. :p
FWIW - I still have the original 135's but don't want to spend the money for new snows. Plus, the staggered setup means the rears will be wider, and wide snows aren't a good idea.
Right now I've got 205mm snows on those cheap 16" 'Sport Edition' wheels that seemingly everyone around here runs for the winter.
https://www.tirerack.com/images/wheels/sportedition/se_a7_s_pdpfull.jpg
I spent a bit too much on non-essential items like wheels and suspension over the last year, so I need to curb my spending a bit. Mortgage, kids and a private school tuition don't leave much room for splurging. :( That means I just have to suck it up and drive a more mundane-looking E46 for the winter. ;)

I have 255/40R18 in my rear. It’s fine. You’ll only notice the traction change if you’re in fully extreme scenarios where 90% of the people are stuck. lol.
I drove in some deep and heavy stuff without issue last year. One morning we had a foot of snow overnight and I got out with little problem (before dawn). When I came back two hours later (during dawn) the freezing temps were on the warmer side, like 30°F where the snow gets heavy and much harder to get traction with. I couldn’t make it up a moderate incline with tire pressure at around 30. I removed air pressure down to approx 20 to get it home. I was also running on 4 season old (with camber wear) Blizzak LM60s.

I don't think the wide snows are as big of an issue as everyone makes it out to be. Is your state like Illinois where you can get 0-10 good snow days during the winter? Also what tires are those?

Yes, the shop had to install slimmer wheel weights. And then... I put on the winters this month and rotated front to back. Jacked the car down and thought I was done. I go for a drive and there was a repeating noise coming from the drivers side front. I jacked the corner up and checked for clearance. The weights were rubbing on the brake shield, so I bent the shield in a bit.

Yes, it’s about the same here; only a handful of occasions where I’m driving before the roads are plowed, but I still wouldn’t want to be relying on a 255mm tire for traction with a non-posi rear end in 6” of snow. The tires are Dunlop winter sport M+S. They’re at least 3 years old so the traction could be better... I just don’t have $700 to drop on new snows + mount & balance right now.

I know this is going to sound lame but I installed an OEM CD changer. I only drive the car about 1,000 miles a year and couldn't see spending money on a new sound system. I happened across a brand new CD changer on ebay for $50 with the original box, paperwork, etc. I figure for the $75 (cost of changer and bracket) I couldn't go wrong. The car is completely stock with the exception of the front club splitters, pedals, and rear spoiler, and I kind of want to keep it that way. Every time I bring it to the dealer they are shocked by how low the miles are and the condition of the car.

I had the CDV in for at least 40k miles. I haven't taken it out for a full test, so I can only give initial impressions.
Taking off 1st gear no longer feels like I'm guessing where the engagement point is. The clutch now has a more solid feel. I do not mean stiffer or more difficult to press, but modulation is more consistent or confident feeling.
The high rpm 1st to 2nd shift used to be downright embarrassing. I used to think in my head "I know I can drive stick, why am I being a noob?" That caused me to gingerly slip the clutch to have a smoother upshift. With the CDV gone, it becomes MUCH more natural to drive spiritedly, without thinking about how to engage the next cog.
General driving seems to feel better. I'll have to unlearn some things first, then I'll have a definite impression for this one.
Thanks very much for that!

I found the “Big Boy Clutch Stop” made a much bigger difference to me than the CDV delete. My OE clutch released so much higher than the Mazda I was used to I felt like I was always guessing. The clutch stop took out the extra travel and made me feel a lot less of a noob despite many years of manual driving.
If anyone is interested, Garagistic makes one for $23 that’s identical to the $30 UUC one, and it keeps you from having to support UUC (which I’ve found many people don’t want to do).

Hopefully to replace the lead-acid lump in the back.
It's a test run since I had a few of these laying around.
A few benefits of running a Li-Ion pack:
More reliable. The configuration that I'll be running them in allows them to pretty much rest at their nominal rated voltage (around 3.6-3.7 volts per cell). This reduces stress on the internals of the cells. They will never be discharged below 3.0V and can last almost indefinitely.
Higher starting voltage. I have 4 of these in series. 4 times 3.7 = 14.8 which is roughly the alternator charging voltage. The battery will maintain that voltage level vs the lead acid which drops to about 12-13 volts.
Less voltage drop during high-current delivery. Reduces work for the alternator since the Li-Ion pack has "stiffer" voltage.
Less weight. Obvious benefits here.
These are all theory of course, but hey it shouldn't hurt to try once or twice.

These use "physics" to inflate the numbers, but torque at the crankshaft/wheels is what matters anyway.
Dodge (alternator made by Magneti Marelli):
"The two engine's eTorque systems are similar but different. For starters, the V-6's liquid-cooled eTorque motor is supplied by Continental and reverse-mounted on the front of the engine, adding length to the DOHC mill. The 5.7-liter Hemi's air-cooled electric helper is mounted on the top of the pushrod V-8, adding height, and it is supplied by Magneti Marelli. Output for the V-6's eTorque unit is 12 horsepower and 39 lb-ft, although the torque is multiplied by the belt drive to create a 90-lb-ft assist. The Hemi's eTorque motor is good for 16 horses and 49 lb-ft and, again, multiplied through a slightly different ratio for an assist of 130 lb-ft. Both systems use the same 48-volt, 0.4-kWh lithium-ion battery and DC-DC converter, which is used to charge and run the truck's 12-volt electrical system. The air-cooled battery doesn't impinge on interior space as it is mounted behind the rear seat."
GM (This is nice, but the voltage is really high, almost house mains voltage):
At the LA Auto Show, on November 15, 2010, General Motors announced that it would be releasing an all-new version of the BAS system available in the 2012 Buick LaCrosse.[8] While still a Belted Alternator Starter system, the system is named eAssist and includes a larger more powerful Hitachi-supplied[citation needed] 115 Volt Lithium Ion battery and a 105 kW (141 hp) motor-generator that delivers 279 lb⋅ft (378 N⋅m) of torque. The additional power provided by the more powerful battery and motor provides the ability to contribute more power, and more often able to electrically start and assist the 2.4L engine. The eAssist system also includes a specially modified GM 6T40 6-speed automatic FWD transaxle.[9][10]

^ Sure looks like it to me. Mine is doing something similar, though not enough to trigger a code. It is clogged as hell though; a Prius could out-accelerate me at this point.

Ouch, that's embarrassing lol.
I have the P0420 code stored. I'll clear it and see if it comes back. I'm suspecting it will. Let's just say I took advantage of eBay's little 10% sale yesterday :devilish :devilish :devilish

New windshield to replace my destroyed one. This one has rain sensor prep on it, including the designated blacked out area and the prism for the sensor. Still collecting parts for the rain sensor retrofit, but getting there!

This one is made by Fuyao. Safelite didn't give me a choice (this was the only one in their system). Fuyao is a Chinese company that recently purchased an old GM plant in Ohio, and was granted DOT 1038 as their identifier. Thankfully mine is a DOT 1038 glass, and so far the quality looks great!

Oh lol - I guess that makes more sense. It was surprisingly cheap; I paid $244.59 out the door. He said he saved me $60... not sure how, but I appreciate it. :)
I've had great experience with the Safelite in Bridgeport. Turns out, the guy who replaced my glass in the ZHP (twice, because first glass was shit and was giving me headaches) also did the glass in the touring. Great dude.

After surgery 2 weeks ago, I was itching to get in the garage. So I finally installed these. Had them for a few months. Trying to ease back into things.

Last night my wife's E70 X5 got rear ended. Apparently, some guy driving an Infinity G37 was wearing "new boots" and couldn't operate the brake pedal correctly. He hit a Passat which hit the X5. Looking at the car, I think just the bumper is damaged. I couldn't see anything from underneath looking at the bumper and frame.
Back to the body shop :/

Thanks Whammy. Still not allowed to drive, but I did sit in the garage for probably half an hour watching the lights fade in and out. May have sat in the driver seat and made some vroom vroom noises too.
Hope your wife is okay. Those new boots can be dangerous. Someone should notify health and safety about that.

DEPO headlights come with the UU-shaped angel eyes, same brightness and hint of blue as the other OO-shaped ones out there like Umnitza Orions or Khoalty-brand (had all three).
DEPO doesn't sell just the angel eyes though, so the only option would be to get the headlights and retrofit better HID/projectors in since the ones they come with are terrible.

Ordered & received most of these last week: ECSTuning transmission filter kit, x6 NGK spark plugs, coolant expansion tank & cap, x6 quarts of Redline D4 ATF, Liqui Moly 0W-40, newly wrapped steering wheel, OE carpets, OE cup holder, fuel filter, valve cover gasket, Cusco oil catch can, Bosch oxygen sensors. Returned the Bosch and going with Denso instead after Amazon told me I ordered them before and they didn't last very long.
Everything goes in this week. Til then, the grocery-getter is now the DD (2018 i3 BEV).

coupe over here. dying to finally get some angel eyes. Anyone heard of the brand 'Switchback'? Someone showed me it actually flashes amber with your turn signals... pretty cool feature. What brands do you guys recommend now that Khoalty doesn't make em anymore? I've heard Umnitzas are good.

It gets the job done; the main reason I leased it was the price - I had heard that dealers were knocking 10%+ off MSRP. That, along with some tips from leasehackr, made it a no-brainer since I was able to get it down to $0 due at signing with the monthly payments equaling what I pay in gas for DD'ing the ZHP.
The looks haven't grown on me but it feels like it goes from 0-60 pretty quickly and with the size & handling, it makes for a good DD around the city. Plus, no need to wait to warm up the car before leaving in the morning, free charging, etc...

Never heard of switchback but the experience I had with Umnitza was terrible. Back then I had the Orion V2's (V4's are the newest version now) and one-half of one of the four rings did not light up. It was a known defect and working with them to get it replaced or fixed was impossible as their customer service is non-existent. I tossed them and went Khoalty instead.
You may have better luck; seems like the V4's do not have the problems of the V2's and you can choose two options when it comes to appearance.

Installed an autodim mirror in The Vault.
Yesterday I installed all new brakes front and back (rotors and pads), sensors, and sway bar end links front and back. Also replaced the headlight leveling sensor arm since it wasn't mounted in the right place and was rusty.

Got any pics of them on a facelifted coupe? I'd only consider it if they aren't fully circular giving the impression that my car has snorted cocaine and is now high as a kite.

Always nice having a clean garage. I hate it when mine gets so outta whack that I'm tripping over stuff.
Man I hear ya about the back... never had surgery but I was in a wheelchair for a several weeks. Took about 2 months for it to get better...It was pretty miserable...
What are the bikes there on the other side of the car?
It was so bad in there.
Sadly not recuperating as fast as I would like. Still on crutches and in more pain than last time.
The bikes are as follows.
1980 Yamaha XS650. Kind of a rat build. That one is mine. Don’t know if I’ll ever be able to ride again, but I’m holding on to it just in case.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181218/fc2401eb5fcd013a2dcfa62e49c57788.jpg
1981 Yamaha XS400. Build in a cafe style. Belonged to a friend who moved and had to leave it behind. It’s now mine too. Thinking about selling it since I have the title now.
1982 Honda Nighthawk. Was letting someone work on it in my garage when I was building the other 2. It’s a tracker style. Probably the dumbest bike to make one out of, but to each their own. I build the frame, made new trays, skins, and wiring harness and other related odds and ends. Then he stopped showing up after my back went out. I am about to have that one towed to his house and dropped off.
