I helped install a set of Recaro Sportster CS in my best friend's ///M today.... it was a learning experience on how to mount adjusting rails, seat mounts, and occupancy sensors....in the end I thought it turned out very well! Now I know what to expect when I get my set in summer ;)

Minor stuff to the e39iT today -- LED AEs, new p/s cap seal, new fuel cap retaining strap. Planned to do VCGs & spark plugs today but a mechanically disabled friend had a car that wouldn't start. I phone diagnosed it to a bad battery, had to go over & prove it to him, showed only 5.45V across the terminals, and he still didn't believe me. Took arm twisting to get him to commit on a new battery, he finally went to go buy one, I installed, and a miracle, it started. Showed him the new battery had 12.4V across the terminals, think he finally got it.

Derbo - for mine, I removed the occupancy sensor from the OEM seat, zip tied it up under the passenger seat and plugged it in. No errors/codes/lights

simple fix - took about an hour to remove from the oem seat and put the seat back together and not having it look like I took the seat apart

I don't have the money to dump into one of those, they are huge money pits. Luckily he's got 4 he's bought over the years that he can turn into 1 clean example, this particular body is the cleanest one at the moment. All the drivetrain and interior were swapped from his last main 745i:

Yeah, I bet those 745's are a PITA. They do look nice, and when they work I bet they are pretty nice to drive.

No, you lose heat, memory and power functions. You can "retain" heat if you order them with heat function - but then they do not use the seat heater button on center console - the seats each have their own button on the seat.

I will say this - mine COOK you and I need to rewire them at some point. I used the heavy duty 12v lead BMW provided in the OEM seat harness - but it is a non-switched 12v source...so if you forget to turn off seat, it will keep on cooking and kill battery.

This was actually late Friday night but didn't get to a computer till now. Installed Chad Engineering's stainless steel pistons in my BMW Performance 6-piston calipers. Used them at the track yesterday. HOLY CRAP they're awesome. No brake fade whatsoever. :thumbsup

So decided to do the VCGs & spark plugs on the 540 today, did the 330 in about 2 hours so planned for 4 hours for the V8, not. This little job kicked my ass, finished just before midnight and am enjoying an accomplishment beverage now.

Book time is supposedly 3 hours for this job, if I was handing you tools and parts I don't see anyway to do it that fast. Started around 10, had to depart at 1:30 for my son's soccer game, at that point I had just the passenger side VCG ( the harder one) reinstalled but still needed to button up that side. Got started again at 5:30, worked until 7:30 and was about ready to reinstall the drivers side VCG but had to pause to grill dinner. Got back on it by 8:30, had that VCG laid in place by 9:00, then buttoned everything up. Started the car and was cleaning up tools, had a premature celebratory beer, and noticed some brown stuff seeping out from under the car. Exxon Valdez II spill, started checking and found the passenger side VCG protruding at one spot. So took the passenger side VCG off again, reset the gasket and permatex, reinstalled everything, triple/quadruple check, no leaks. Then half an hour to clean up the spill, soaked it all up with newspaper,scrubbed the garage floor where it happened, hosed everything off.

So 3.5 hours + 2 hours + 1 hour = 6.5 hours. The redo for the inept mechanic took another 2+ hours, and half an hour for the spill clean up. But it's done now, only leaked half a quart of oil, had a mess to deal with but didn't cost me any additional parts, just some pride.

Long day, headed to bed.

I already did the plugs on the 740, planning on doing the valley pan gasket and full cooling system this week once I get the upgraded pan back from the machine shop. I'll deal with VCG and powdercoating the valve covers later

I spent last evening doing the driver's door window regulator. Looks like tonight will be the passenger door. Can't complain too much, the 2004 ZHP has 110K miles on it and these were the first regulators to go. I was probably living on borrowed time.

Saturday, I replaced the waterpump and thermostat. I have been having temp issues for a while now, with temperatures dipping down periodically. I originally thought it the sensor, and DW kindly sent me a replacement. I did find that the old sensor may be fine, but the o-ring was shot. So, thermostat and waterpump went in with absolutely no issues. As well, I replaced the transmission fluid. Old fluid was brown and burned, so I definitely waited a bit long. I wanted to do the rear diff fluid as well, but I didn't have a 14 mm hex on hand at the time.

Sunday, I replaced the front tires, finally. The old set were getting down to the cords, so it was about time. Only thing I have left to do now is replace the passenger foglamp. It's been busted for a bit now and looks crappy. I'll get to it eventually.

I also took a BMW OEM hitch system for the X5 and cut the receiver off, turned it 45deg straight down and the had it rewelded (I would have welded myself - but wanted it STRONG so I can tow a car trailer with touring)

I will then use an "L" shaped adaptor similar to this, but incorporating the ball mount - so still only one receiver/tongue joint - should still be rated Class III and 6000lbs pull and 600lbs tongue

Nope. Soaking it with PBB and working it back and forth. I can turn it about 180 in either direction.... No more. Gonna try again tomorrow.

That looks about right to me for stock height. I think I have 2 fingers of gap between my tires and fenders.

That looks about like mine. The Bentley Manual calls out distances from the fender lip above the tire to the bottom lip of the wheel (metal to metal). They list this distance for the sport suspension with 18 inch wheels as 23.71 in (602 mm) for the front and 22.32 in (567 mm) for the rear. I'm not 100% sure is the ZHP suspension is the same height as the sport, but it should give you a starting point.

Just picked up an excellent used genuine BMW wind deflector in Oakville this weekend, and tried it on my car tonight -SWEE-EET! I'm very pleasantly surprised at how effective it is, even at 120 (kmph, not mph) wind buffeting was close to zero. The only thing that sucks is you lose the use of your rear seats with it installed.

I'm very pleasantly surprised at how effective it is, even at 120 (kmph, not mph) wind buffeting was close to zero. Just picked up an excellent used genuine BMW wind deflector in Oakville this weekend, and tried it on my car tonight -SWEE-EET! I'm very pleasantly surprised at how effective it is, even at 120 (kmph, not mph) wind buffeting was close to zero. The only thing that sucks is you lose the use of your rear seats with it installed.

What a great pickup. After riding in a couple verts, I can attest, this is a MUST have mod for verts... Well done!

The applications that I have used (all exterior) have held up well so far. The only trouble is on the clear bra. The spots where debris constantly hits the edges by the wheel well didn't hold up and started to peel about the size of a quarter or two. I think the 2-3 coats I put on weren't enough. Keep in mind I noticed it after a 200 mile drive at 80mph through a continuous downpour.

I put my car through the "touch" car wash at the BMW dealership a few times this winter with my plastidipped wheels....it was good and survived the cleanings. LOL. Now if can handle my water bottle constantly rubbing and banging against the surface without chipping off and peeling then that would be awesome!!

No sanding this time actually, I soaked everything in some hot water and simple green for about an hour. Then I used the scouring side of a sponge to remove any of the plastic from the areas that were heavily scratched. Then I used a Mr.Clean magic eraser to blend in the bare plastic and remaining rubber coating. Think of the sponge as sandpaper, and the eraser as if you were wet sanding. It took less time than sanding, and it came out just as good. (I've done this on my old 328ci) This time around, I did not remove all of the coating. I only removed the coating in spots that were heavily scratched.

I actually only applied the Plasti-dip in lightish coats. Allowing 30min between coats as per the can. 3 coats later and they came out like new.

Did a oil change and turned out that the drain plug broke. This is right before the interview at BMW today. Aced the interview and picked up a new drain plug along with a 3 pc grabit kit to remove the broken drain plug. Had to remove the under belly pan along with the reinforcement just to get to the drain plug. This is the first time it ever happen to me. Took me about 30 mins to remove everything and the plug. Total cost today was 25 dollars. Side note is that I already had the grabit tool and couldn't find it :(

Just a reminder that everyone should probably replace it every 100k or so :)

Today I took off all of my wheels and did the "big clean" on them. They were trashed after my track day on Saturday; I now have little black spots of caked on brake dust, just from it sitting for about 3 days. I am NEVER taking these wheels to the track again. :(

I also installed my OEM wheel locks today, but the key doesn't fit in the corresponding place in the trunklid toolkit! So, it goes in the glovebox I suppose. Does anyone have a pic of the wheel lock that belongs in there so I can compare it to mine? Other than that, I have all other spots in the tool kit filled :)

With all due respect, did you put it in there correctly? I thought mine "didn't fit" for a good 6 (or more) months, then one time I turned it around and it popped right in. The tool kit holds it in place with the nut part of the tool (not the key part) they key part should stick out away from you and the nut part closest to you. Give her another shot and see!

Is it bad to shift without a clutch? I of course do it "properly" when the rpms, and road speed of the car are ready for a new gear.. I have only done it coming out of first and out of third in to neutral. I know one of my friends drives his 2010 VW Rabbit without using the clutch to shift sometimes..

Am I messing up the synchros or anything? I know some truck drivers shift without the clutch because the torque of the truck really burns up the clutch.

I would never "float" the gears every shift, I just did it twice and thought it was pretty interesting. I need to teach myself heel-toe shifting next. I think it will really help me out when I start auto-crossing it.

tomorrow i plan to detail the wheels and fill in some paint chips with Dr Colorchip Kit/Touch-Up Pen

- HI/LO instead of "59" and "91" degrees on the climate control
- Activated clown nose blinking on lock
- Remote window closing
- Disabled remote window opening
- Disabled key-in window closing/opening (no more worrying about rainstorm scenarios)
- Changed my oil/service interval to 7,000 miles instead of 15,000 (no more mental math)
- Enabled single flash of turn signals on lock, two-flash on unlock
- Automatic door lock at I think 16 km/h
- Seats move into my position on the unlock button (supposedly, I couldn't get it to work right)
- All door locks open with remote instead of selective

I used NCSExpert and NCSDummy to do it.

Tomorrow will be updating the ECU to v41 and resetting adaptation values

I think so. I saw it work a couple of times but it was sporadic. Maybe I just don't exactly know how it works yet.

What I did notice is that disabling comfort open/close from the key did not change it. It still opens/closes even though I disabled it. I've tried re-enabling it and disabling it, but it doesn't seem to do anything. I'll have to delve into this further. Kind of odd...

Sometimes it sets it to setting 2 which is wifes.

Sometimes it correctly sets it to 1 mine

Sometimes it sets the seats to my setting but leaves the mirrors at hers.

In all situations the seat memory buttons put everything to the correct positions.

I decided to pop on the koni yellows while they were on sale. I'm at 103xxx and after removing the rears were shot all though the fronts had a little life (both original). Front and rear mounts were replaced with reinforcement but the originals still looked ok. I also replaced rtabs with powerflex and I was surprised at how good they still looked. I've got pics if anyone wants to see mine at this mileage. Car is noticeably tighter. I've got the koni's set on one full turn and so far I'm quite pleased.

So I was in Toronto again yesterday and today on business... and decided to do a little Kijiji shopping... I ended up picking up an almost new, still in the box AFE Stage 1 intake for the low, low price of $XXX.

I just got home, installed it, and took the car for a quick spin - wow does that sound nice when you stomp on it!

I'm sure it added even more than the claimed 20+ hp. I think I will need to get some software to de-tune my car, it's just too much of a beast for me now with this intake, and the included stickers.:scratchinghead

But it does sound nice, and that's all I really wanted. :pimp

How do you clean the inside of the lens? I just got mine and the inner lights has a lot of dirt.

If sedan - removing the lens is quite easy, matter of removing the trim under the headlight and then working carefully to unclip lens.

If coupe - ugh, cooking and prying apart...then sealing it back together

Coupe is not even worth it. Messing up lens removal is deadly - that's $400-600 down the drain if you break the lens. A lot of the DIYs suggest putting it in the oven - no thanks. The safest way would be a heat gun around the glue area.

To this day I still don't understand why manufacturers went to the "glue" method when replaceable lenses make more sense...

As well documented, I was def. leary of "cooking" my lenses to install Angel Eyes, but Hieu (sillieidiot) has done quite a few and did mine for me. Definitely worth it, but not so much just to clean the lenses.

Not a huge day for me, but a few things done. I got my aux input kit installed... Also some more work on my front end, getting it to look the way I want... In addition, I'm doing some work on the vert window switch mod...

I also installed my OEM wheel locks today, but the key doesn't fit in the corresponding place in the trunklid toolkit! So, it goes in the glovebox I suppose. Does anyone have a pic of the wheel lock that belongs in there so I can compare it to mine? Other than that, I have all other spots in the tool kit filled :)

With all due respect, did you put it in there correctly? I thought mine "didn't fit" for a good 6 (or more) months, then one time I turned it around and it popped right in. The tool kit holds it in place with the nut part of the tool (not the key part) they key part should stick out away from you and the nut part closest to you. Give her another shot and see!

And Stathi, thanks for posting the pics... Your wheel key (as well as the ones JP posted) all look the way mine does NOW... Mine had an outer round portion over the actual key that went around the outside of the lug bolt... I had to machine that off... I will post a pic when I get back into town...

Thanks Travis... Yeah man, I wanted a little more color than just the front edge of the vanes, so I painted the whole thing. It'll make it visible from the sides a little more (obviously, from my pic)... Came out really good too... That Krylon Fusion spray paint made for plastic is great stuff... :thumbsup

Just ordered clears for the touring. I hope it looks good on the car, I have been on the fence with clears for about a year LOL.

I will also order some OEM BMW clears for the rear sometime next week. I ordered DEPO for the front corner lights and side markers, I saved like $70 by ordering DEPO on the front and sides, it was hard for me to pass that deal up. :shifty

I will go OEM for the rear because it's boss as hell to have OEM Euro lights, and it is almost the same price as the DEPO's..

Updating my ecu as we speak with WinKFP. It's nerve racking. Even though I'm hooked to a battery charger I still worry about it failing! Ahhhh 75% hurry up!!

It takes a while. Kinda interesting to see how individual modules work in the car. When you update the ecu, the CEL and limp home mode lights shut off.

Going to reset knock adaptations as per BMW TIB for fixing 4200 rpm dip.

Wow, I don't recall vacuuming the car yet this year, I did it today, finally. Don't flame me, I work full time, am finishing my Chemistry degree this semester, flipping a condo on the side and doing projects at my own house too. Very busy.

Along with the other normal (minimal) interior cleaning, didn't condition the leather, that will have to wait.

Car has been out in the rain over the past few days and I noticed it smelling wet inside, I first found a small puddle under the passenger side rear floor mat, and then a second one under the passenger front floor mat. I hoped the rear was from a leaking water bottle (don't judge me), but there is no way the front wasn't from the rain. The cowl around my windshield is well beyond its lifetime, could this be where the leak is coming from?

I have a HUGE chip in the middle of the windshield that I figured would have cracked by now, but it hasn't. I have a $0 deductible, but wanted to wait until it cracked to get it replaced. Has anyone with State Farm had theirs replaced on here? Do they cover the cowl and associated trim pieces around the windshield? I'll probably just have the dealer do it, but I would like to supply those pieces myself (not marked up 200%) if my insurance doesn't end up covering them.

No rush, I'll be sure to keep her in the garage from now on (at school, at work, and at home). I'll probably get it replaced after my after-graduation vacation...

Finished the paint correction yesterday, hood needs more work but my pads were shot and I was ready to move onto wax and sealant. Of course it rained all day today, my luck, but after the wash, clay, Polish, wax and seal it still looks good. Paints was is terrible shape, Dalton can attest to the dealer I got the car from basically destroying the paint but it's much improved now. First pic is the trunk lid before, then after and then just some shots, have an mtech2 and front end respray coming soon, along with style 68's and tires soon, still paying for all the suspension work I just did.

^ I want to change mine too. My steering is till tight (even though my car is at nearly 170k miles) but I still think it can be improved.

as for my ZHP, i finally got the spacers installed last saturday, 12.5F/15R from TMS...
