No. It's just a PITA and not worth my time to pitch a bitch at the shop. Some hills I just don't care to climb. I'm an idiot with three BMWs, drives quite a bit, and don't have the time for some of my own R&R. The indy I had used previously closed up shop to take a better, safer, more predictable job, so I have been looking. I am crossing this indy off the list.

I replaced the big vacuum cap in the rear, and installed the CCV kit. It turned into a 2 day project. I ran out of light and skill. Hopefully nothing goes wrong, because I don't think I'll be able to fix it. Overall, power seems a bit more beefy. Could be placebo.

I have been driving it! Two weekends ago I got the ZHP out of winter hibernation and got it prepped to start using again. Then this Monday on my way to work the coolant tank in my X1 exploded while stuck in traffic. Yes, the plastic coolant tank in my 2013 52,000 mile X1 failed on a 60 degree day! It seems that not only has BMW still not learned how to make a coolant tank, they have gotten even worse. Anyway, While I am waiting for parts for the X1 I have been using the ZHP full time this week and I forgot how much I love driving this car!

Well,

Ran the battery dead - left key in ignition after running it to bleed the coolant and cycle the vanos (Vanos seal refresh). Pretty sure that is operator error.

Ending up being a good(ish) thing - just now noticed that the PO removed the battery tie down clamp. As that is one of the Tech inspection fails - I have time to get one from the junk yard before the next Auto X event.

Stupid to good (ish) before coffee....

I finally got my ZHP aligned after changing struts and shocks. I know very little about alignment, so I'd greatly appreciate input regarding the results (shown below). Note that they mentioned some degree of difficulty in getting it perfect due to their lack of some special BMW tool (?) but thought this was "good enough". Funny how that didn't seem to be an issue when they did my xi...

On a related note, I'm having to modify one of my ECS strut bar mounting plates, because the alignment required them to push the driver side strut mount so far over that the cavity under the strut bar mounting plate isn't big enough to cover the studs and the hole in the top of the top of the strut pillar.

Alignment cost = $69

05-03-2018, 02:26 PM
I'd say it's not the best alignment I've ever seen. There's no reason they couldn't get both sides to be the same values. Rear left was -1.4, now -2.0... Rear Right was -0.6, now -1.6. If -1.6 was the best they could get on the right, they should have made the left the same.

-My two cents.

Received the left reset stalk button for my speedo cluster and just replaced it. I ordered the part off eBay in the UK (discussed in this thread on 4/23) just based on symptoms (and thanks to Webster's repair posts) and I hadn't even pulled out the cluster yet. So I was happy to take it apart and find that, sure enough, a broken off piece on the stalk that touches the button. Really quick and easy fix. Hardest part was locating and waiting for the part.

The image on the top is the new part ( with 90 degree finger), and the bottom image is the broken one (without it). Now I can go reset that oil service interval........

Well, you'll get a kick out of this... I tried reworking the mounting plate, but the Dremel tool couldn't eliminate an interfering radius in the cavity, so I had a local machine shop take care of it for $40. Got it home, went to position it and dropped a washer into the bowels of the engine bay... lovely. So, I got my QuickJack out, jacked her up, pulled the belly pan off, and actually managed to find it in short order. Good news, right? Well, my elation was cut short when I realized I forgot to put the strut bearing mount nuts back on when I lifted the car, dropping the strut down completely, of course--certainly screwing up my new alignment. The only silver lining is that I was considering another alignment anyway. I guess that cinches it... so much for tooling around this weekend.

Spent my Saturday night and a good part of the day today doing the VANOS rattle and seals repairs... VCG too, of course, though it was actually in very good shape. Must have been replaced within the last 20-30k miles. I may keep it as a backup. Also did new spark plugs ‘while I was in there.’

Easy job, but time consuming AF.

And a quick video of the culprit...

http://youtu.be/zqNEB2oS4HM

BTW - I was psyched that the Beisan rattle fix worked on the first try; didn’t need to sand the spacer or washers... it was a perfect fit.

Edit to add; If your car has 100k miles or more, you definitely should do the vanos seals. It feels like it really woke the engine up, and the stumble which occurred between 2500 and 3000 rpm is gone. I'm so glad I did it now.

Went to a local wrecking yard and got a milking code/backlit Homelink, to replace the older style unit that came in the car I got a couple of weeks ago - and wasn't connected to anything. :scratchinghead

Put it in, programmed it and now I don't have to screw with the crappy remote that goes with the garage door, which doesn't always work.

Washed it and took it out for a Sunday drive to let it stretch it's legs a bit. Found a curvy backroad with a nice bridge that has oddly fantastic acoustics. Ripped the throttle, smiled like an idiot, aaaand fell in love with it all over again.

I have owned many faster cars but this thing just fits like a glove for the driving styles I prefer.

I brought my car to a new place for a second alignment (see above). Well, I finally call them this afternoon to make sure it's done, and the place that does it for them couldn't get it on their alignment rack, because the car's too low (standard suspension with 245/40R17's). I broke down and called the stealership (50 miles away) and, of course, it's more than twice as much ($169) with a 2-week lead time... what a fiasco.

PetesZ
05-08-2018, 02:52 PM
I went through 2 shops the stealership until I broke down and went on base to the auto skills shop. $45 best alignment I have ever had. I always felt the car was too responsive at highway speeds they dialed it down to my liking.

Going the other way with the track car. More responsive the better.

Haha I need to keep Blue Rust Bucket away from snowy environments.

If she thinks a Porsche and a Civic are the same then you should obviously buy a Porsche and show her a Civic price sheet. “See honey, they’re actually quite reasonably priced!”

After hearing a few folks had success with lower cost ebay black Kidney Grilles, I gave it a shot. $40. I went for the matte finish. Ordered last week from Taiwan and arrived today (only 7 days) Well packaged in individual bags. https://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-E46-LCI-2D-Coupe-Convertible-FRONT-GRILLS-GRILLE-KIDNEY-MATTE-BLACK/251580687473?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

Easy install and I was happy with fit. Just pop right in. The only appearance difference I can see is that there's a small ridge line in the upper corner (where the 2 grilles meet) that isn't there on the OEM one I took out. But it's got a contour and if yoou didn't know, it looks like it's supposed to be there. I'm happy at $40 and with appearance change. And I used the bags/box to store the silver grilles in case I ever want to switch bag

Here's before and after

I found that one of the 2 bottom clips on each grille crumbled when I touched them (they're so brittle from aging), but on closer inspection it appeared they were already no longer making contact with the tabs anyway. I'm sure they'll still hold fine if I ever have to pop them back, since they are 6 clips total as I recall

Ah yeah, that's the line that they added to the ECS grilles to get away from infringement on the BMWP design. The only grilles you can get for a facelift coupe/vert without that line are the BMWP grilles, which are now NLA.

I just had my cooling system worked on (expansion tank, hoses and thermostat) and decided to have the dealer do a detail job as well. They detailed my wife's 535i earlier this month and did a great job, so I decided to go for it. Usually I do this sort of thing myself. Well, the folks at Medford BMW did an amazing job on my car. It came back looking like new! I guess that's why the owner of a blue McLaren had their car detailed there. Plus they throw in a spa appointment for the owner as well, so my wife gets another trip to the masseuse.

i got my AC recharged earlier this week. it was blowing hot air and it has been in the mid 90s this week. no bueno. blowing cold again. i had the shop put a dye in with the freon so we can pinpoint the leak. i figure recharging 1-2x per year at ~$150 a pop is still cheaper than dropping $2500-3k for a new condenser.

also topped up oil. since switching to Shell Rotella 5w-40 Diesel oil, the consumption is not as bad, about one quart so far in about 1700 miles.

$150 a pop yeesh. I did my own the other day. I got three cans for $20 and already had a trigger hose from doing a friends car a while back. It was certainly sketchy without the proper equipment that a shop has, but I was confident in my method.

My AC isnt working either. UV dye wouldn't show where the leak is, because the expansion valve and/or drier is clogged i think, and freon is not moving through the system. Shop used a sniffer and found leak at condenser and one of the hose fittings. So I bought new set of O-rings, expansion valve, drier and condenser, all together for ~$145. That'll be a fun project when all the parts get in.

Just got back from a run on one of my favorite roads--about 20 miles through a State forest with lots of sharp turns, dips, and rises and zero traffic. It's a tad rough but not too bad. Anyway, it was my first real test of my new Koni yellows (adjusted half a turn from full soft with OEM springs and 245/40R18 PSS) and 3.38 MFactory limited slip diff. Sooooo MUCH FUN! I had the DSC flash once going over a rise with no noticeable power loss, but I wasn't losing traction much, so I can't say the limited slip was doing much, but the extra torque was intoxicating! As for handling, the ride was EXQUISITE! It feels like it'll do anything asked, but I like to keep it well within safety margins. I'm loving those Koni's... I'd say the setting is just slightly on the stiff side of comfortable (gets annoying on a bumpy road, but absorbs the occasional big bump adequately)--noticeably stiffer than factory.

I used header/exhaust wrap for the section behind the muffled x-pipe to the bend (~18” section underneath both cross-braces). Because the pipes will get very hot, I’m not worried about moisture staying in the wrap material.

I kept the rubber hanger supports in place—they’re screwed into the bottom of the bracket, and the exhaust is just sitting on top of them (the top stud isn’t long enough to thread). Zero rattles this morning.

Driver's side headlight was blinking for a bit and turned purple. Finally went out today. Ordered a pair of Morimoto D2S XB HID bulbs 5500k. Was thinking about doing the whole retrofit kit to fix the burnt bowls etc, but that's a bit much to tackle for my taste. Total damage including Shipping was $53.75 on the Retrofit Source website. Price is pretty much in line with all of the others.

OEM and other bulbs via Pelican Parts were CRAZY expensive! $50+ just for a single bulb.

Solenoid for SMG?

SMG motor for the pump! Replacing the tired OEM motor with something better. I was starting to get codes and just about got stranded at the US border, blocking the only exit for cars. LOL. But luckily that motor restarted and hydraulic pressure was back to change gears and operate the clutch. [emoji51]

I swapped my ZKWs for AL that I picked up used. Much better that the burnt through and cracked ZKWs output. Simple direct swap with basic hand tools. Going to pull them to install new ZKW lenses, halos and new bulbs soon. I got my AL for less than the retrofit kit so decided to go that route.

Thank you in advance!!!I have some info in the project thread for Sketchi with images of when I did the swap on my wife's zhp.

Plus you can search the forum since plenty of other members have went this route. But you just need the AL headlights and to modify the current zkw mounting bracket that sits on the bottom of your current headlight or buy the specific AL bracket (1 per side). The rest is plug and play.

Also my used AL headlights came with the brackets on them.

It will fit. You have to flatten out the ends a bit. I drilled new holes for it too (where it mounts on the trans). Not only is the diameter of the pipes bigger, the aren't as close together as the stock ones. Make sure you put anti seize on that long bolt :)

finally replaced the PO's brake pads. Plenty of meat on them, but I was tired of washing the wheels every 2 days. Akebono's, same as I've been running on my 745i for years. Now I can enjoy these new 135's.

Why'd that put the right rear wear sensor right above the jack pad? They could have put that anywhere. Like in the wheel well - same as the front which was so easy to change. I could barely get my hand in their with the floor jack on the pad....

Also installed the bluetooth GROM-BT3 in the trunk yesterday. Music sounds great to my old ears. Haven't tried the phone with the top down yet

Took the ZHP on a long drive to test out the alignment, stretch her legs, and retrieve my Porter Cable polisher from storage. The extra camber up front feels great in the corners, but I have to get used to the straight-line twitchiness. Should be great for my upcoming track days.

While I was out I came up on a super clean, facelift E39 sport. As I was approaching I started to give them a thumbs up (as I always do to cars I like) and realized the driver and his wife/GF were both already giving me a thumbs up. I always love little moments like that between fellow car people.

As an early Father’s Day gift I’ll be spending the rest of the weekend giving my dad’s E60 some much-needed love.

You don’t need the kit that size (I think they make one with smaller portions), but this kit was enough for the ZHP and **barely** the 530i. Admittedly I probably used too much on the ZHP, and had to go pretty thin (read: probably the correct amount) on the 5er.

Edit: Autogeek runs sales all the time. You can probably get 15-25% off if you’re patient.

About like wax. Apply to one panel at a time, and then buff off. But you can’t let it cure for more than a couple minutes or removal is a pain in the ass. In summer heat I’d say 3-4min max before removal. Then you just need to keep the car in the garage for 12-24 hours for full “cure.”

Yeah, doing it on the car isn't really an option. :)
Baking your headlights to remove the lenses will be the hard part for you, I'd imagine. If it was a sedan, I could offer to help you out, but I'm not comfortable baking headlights. Mine was easy in that regard; just pop off the headlight lens and disassemble.

Let me know if you need some wire; I still have some left from when I did mine.

So from what your saying, the harness has more damage than you can see within a few inches of the bulb connector? Because I was seeing some kits that sold the pinned connector and 3.7 inches of pigtail to splice to. Which I assume I could do with pulling the lenses. Like this:

https://www.amazon.com/uxcell-Ceramic-Headlight-Connector-Socket/dp/B0097AAB62/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1527623601&sr=8-2&keywords=headlight+connector+plug+h7

The damage in mine went a lot deeper than that. My wiring had falling-off insulation all the way to where the pins are on the housing. It was really bad.
If you see any broken insulation, it really is worth rebuilding the whole thing as chances are it's bad in spots where you can't see it. Even if it isn't bad now, it probably will be soon.

This is what one of my headlights looked like. Look at all those splits! I honestly don't know how my car didn't burn to the ground by then; there are long sections of wire that were just bare.

Rotated the tires today on the car.

Also trying to figure out what to do with the rear fenders. The rear end is sagging a little bit which is causing the tires to rub. I am not sure what to do. Do I roll the fenders? Do I look worn out parts to see what may be failing? The suspension on the car only has about 40,000mi on it to date.

You got lucky and were able to find the broken part easy! That hose isn't hard to replace and if it has been a while I would just do T stat and water pump while your in there. Draining and adding coolant sucksOh I got very lucky! Haha I was sitting here all ready to buy a pulley set lol.

I just did my t-stat and pump less than 4000 miles back hahaha. Buuuut the housing could be damaged. If I have to replace the hose, I may just use it as an excuse to go silicone. I'll keep you guys updated on what the issue is lol.

Replaced the Upper and Lower Intake Boot the other day due to SES. Cleared codes. But evidently I still have another fault to take care of...….

That must’ve been some aggressive window closing!

Hahaha I had to ask it twice. All kidding aside, the window auto-down wasn't working. After checking the fuse I decided to check under the switch console. Aaaas I pick it up, the switch just falls out lol. Must have broken some time ago. Still functions but you can pull it out. So, off to get another lol.

My switch was broken when I bought my car. The switches really are a bit flimsy; pull too hard and they can break.
Since my car was under CPO at the time, I took it to the dealer to get it fixed and that's where I found out that for small items like this, the CPO was a ripoff. CPO work requires $50 payment regardless of what it is, so my $20 window switch cost me $50 because I didn't know that. lol

eBay is your friend. :)

Don't forget Christian in FL - he frequently has parts, priced reasonably.

I remember when I replaced my switch, it was like $5-10 more expensive just to buy from FCP over eBay, which had the added benefit a lifetime warranty vs. some guy in China.

Alternatively, go to your local pick and pull and buy it even cheaper.

That was my first thought. Head to a yard. The only downside is I will come out with parts for four more project cars :crying
