The only thing I didn't like about it is it didn't include a sleeve big enough to do the rear diff bushing. I had to use one from my ball joint press...

Does this one not fit the rear diff? I haven’t looked all that closely.

No that doesn't fit the rear diff bushing. One of the pucks in there works for pulling it through though.

I’ll never have another thing done (other than recall) at a stealership. Last time I went in for my airbag recall they conducted a ‘safety check.’ They quoted me $1100 to replace 2 worn rear shocks and $900 for two Michelin Pilot Sports.

I installed two new Bilsteins and M3 USM’s myself for under $350. I also bought two Michelin PSS’s for under $400, shipped. Mounting & balancing will be another $50.

$1,900.00 at the stealership vs $800.00 DIY. No-brainer.

My biggest issue with the dealer/chain garages (aside from the obvious labor rates, and questionable suggestions) is not being able to control what parts are used. They won’t install parts I purchase and bring in, and won’t let me tell them “I want Koni instead of Sachs.”

When my parents bought their E60 a decade ago they were matched up with honestly the greatest S/A I could imagine, so our BMW dealership experience has been pretty great. He’ll let me go back to the floor and talk with the techs, and I’m 99% sure we’ve never paid retail on service. The ZHP has only been there for state and pre-track inspections, but for someone who isn’t working on their car (cough cough—my parents), we’ve had a really good experience. However if our S/A were someone *not* named Saad Mubarak, I’m sure I’d be singing a different tune.

Finally installed Turner pedals...

How was the drilling?

Reasoned1
04-07-2018, 12:29 PM
Piece of cake--although the plastic clutch pedal has a broad backing (pretty crappy set-up) that easily interferes with the screws and nuts, so you have to get as close to the edge of the pedal as possible. The brake pedal is metal with more latitude for mounting. The plastic cover of the accelerator is pretty thin, and the dead pedal plastic seems even thinner, so you have to be careful not to strip the self-tapping screws. Further, the dead pedal surface isn't flat but, if you screw through the outer corners of the pedal, the aluminum plate and plastic surface draw together nicely (again, be careful to not to strip the holes).

Turner only sent three screws for the clutch and brake pedals, each, which seems fine (tighter, more robust fastening method), but the four screws they sent for the accelerator and dead pedals, each, seem a tad inadequate to me, so I'm going to head to the hardware store to double-up.

Another thing to consider are the grooves running up and down on the accelerator and dead pedals. As best I could manage, I tried to avoid drilling in the valleys of those grooves to ensure both a solid backing behind the aluminum where fastened and that the short screws could easily reach through the plastic.

Finally, I did have a hard time keeping the upper holes in the accelerator and dead pedals perpendicular to the surface, because my full-size drill motor was in the way. A right angle drill would be ideal...

Thought you got the black ones? Or was that someone else?
My issue with the clutch one is that it's loose. I tried tightening it but it's still loose, so I still hear that metal clink occasionally when I touched the clutch pedal the right way. It's been that way since 2011 or 2012. lol

Reasoned1
04-07-2018, 01:31 PM
Not me... I thought about black, but I know the finish would come off in no time and look like hell. Plus, the silver really pops.

I'd think you could tighten the nuts on the back of your clutch pedal, with or without the interference I described above, to eliminate that looseness (get a mirror back there to see what the issue is). Failing that, you might either drill new holes (probably tough with limited space) or try using an adhesive of some sort in conjunction with the screws.

The design changed on how the ignition grips the tip of the spark-plug. Don't think there is any advantage to the design change

The part number referenced in that pic does not appear to apply to the 3 series, according to RealOEM. That may be why FCP says it won't fit. Judging by the vehicles on the compatible list, it seems the M54 may not be compatible?

Reinstalled my front subframe brace. Overcame my cheapskate ways and used new screws as recommended. Torqued per specification--43.5 lb-ft + 90 degree turn + 30 degree turn, and that made me realize I wouldn't want to re-use the old screws after what felt like a crazy amount of plastic deformation--in fact, I'm amazed steel can stretch so much without snapping. Of course, once plastically deformed, it's much more likely they will snap if subjected to subsequent forces--as many people have found out.

I speculate (i.e., don't know) that engineers intentionally strain the screws to facilitate failure in the event of a crash. I base this partially on heresay on this forum. As for replacing the screws in the future, I plan on sourcing the screws and washers from "Bolt Depot" or Fastenal" to save big bucks.

Torque angle takes friction out of the equation when stretching a bolt... as you know, torque value can change with friction, for instance, when a bolt is lubricated with anti-seize compound...rust and age of the fasteners can also affect the ft/pound torque reading.

I can’t imagine a 3.64 in my car. Getting on the highway with an intake+catback and sitting at almost 4k-rpm sounds...less than ideal lol.

A 3.46 seems to be ideal for what I’m looking to do. I already use 3rd/4th the most in daily driving, so I might as well make them even more usable as I get more into tracking too [emoji5]

There's almost no difference--probably not noticeable--between 3.38 and 3.46. 3.38 is generally preferred, because you don't typically have to change the input flange which is a tad troublesome.

Thanks, Shawn. It rained hard yesterday which cleansed the roads, so I took her out for a short but sedate spin today. I think I noticed the e-nanny is less likely to kick in, but what I'm really happy about is no clunks. I also changed my engine oil (Mobil 1 0W-40) and power-steering fluid (Redline D4 ATF).

Alignment done. Asked them if they’d swap back in the factory rear springs for the KWs in currently riding on. I passed as they quoted $400!! I guess I’ll DIY before my next alignment.

Also put in some BG 44k and MOA (as I was a bit low). 217,622 on the clock.

Welp, finally had the time to work on the car today. Sourced a bad ground on the passenger fog lamp, remembered I need to change my FCABS (I've had the Z4 FCABS for a year. I just keep forgetting to put them on), aaand diagnosed my passenger front wheel wobble. I'm missing a wheel weight lol. Oh well, I'm ordering tires anyways so I'll deal with it till the new tires go on next week.

Also, finished up that comparison review between the ZHP and VR4 last week. Just need to finish formatting and post it. Should be up tonight or tomorrow.

Price depends on the extent of the damage / time to repair it. I've used Dent Masters twice, and was a bit surprised that it cost what it did, but when you consider the damage is undetectable, the paint still matches perfectly & is as durable as the rest of the car, you pay it!

Oh I agree, but I’ve got a line I won’t cross as far as cost. I worked a lux car dealer for 4 years (Audi, Porsche, jag, rover) and used a few vendors for PDR. I generallyknow what areas cost more and so forth. If it’s recommended by someone on here I’m sure they are good and I appreciate the info, def will be calling them, it’s such an eyesore. I put the car cover back on it so I’ll forgst about it for now

The one from the silver car? I think I took that one. Someone had already been there and dropped the diff, but had rounded off one bolt on each of the output flanges and given up. I sacrificed a socket by hammering it onto the bolt and breaking it free, then left the other output flange in the car since I need to swap the 330 flanges over from my car anyway. Poor dude did 90% of the work for us on that one.

Nate and Spenser, good deal on the diffs. What junkyard is that? That's cool how they have the cars up on those welded (assume) wheels.

It was Pull-A-Part on North Tryon. The diffs were maybe $75 each after tax/enviro/core. Good deal, but a lot of labor. It was fun though.

lol @ the welded wheels. These cars are magically perched as you see them. None of them felt the least bit unstable and I didn't see any on the ground. We did agree to a lengthy waiver...

It did look like it would be a fun time...kind of like an easter egg hunt for big boys. :) Thanks. I haven't been to a junk yard in a long time. I used to have a 1954 Chevy pickup, and would look for parts for it, but that yard looks really nice and nothing like the nasty red mud yards I've been to. I was hoping we might have a yard like that in case the need arises for things like steering angle sensors, ABS modules, etc. Thankfully since the brake pressure sensor I replaced new, everything else is working great and things I'm doing now are just preventative with new parts.

If you pull something like the muffler, but don't want it, do you just leave it under the car or do you have to put it back somewhat?

Yeah it's pretty nice. Spenser knew exactly how many 325/330's they had (we were originally going to see if we could get the 3.38 diff out of a 330i) and their locations from their website https://www.pullapart.com/locations/charlotte/

It's really well laid out and plenty of clean gravel to roll around on. Cardboard makes it quite a bit easier on the joints.

We ripped the muffler off of the black car and left it laying on the ground beside it. It's either a free for all or we're bad people.

Our LKQ gets really muddy, but they usually have more 330s come through (whereas Pull-a-Part seems to have mainly 325s when they actually have E46s). It’s a great resource since they’re both within 30 minutes of my house, but parts availability is obviously pot-luck. We went to PaP this time because it said they had a 330, but when we got there it was a 330xi. Again, pot-luck.

I used to love junk yard hunting! A bunch of us used to sneak in though the back on Sundays... sometimes we'd run into other dudes from school doing the same thing lol. we'd be walking through the woods with transmissions diffs... anything we could carry... this yard was basically 25 acres of fields full of cars... lots of mud, cars precariously teetering on whatever someone could find to hold the car up , wasp nests, fluids leaking into the dirt... good times!

I once found a set of ultra rare Ford 351 Cleveland 4 bbl heads... got em for $100!

Years and years ago, I ran a towing operation for a large body shop chain. During that time, I had many cars that I owned for a short time. I’d part out the stuff that I could market quick. Then scrap the rest.

I was always in and out of the yards and was able to make some screaming deals. One was my 68 Mustang coupe with a 289. My original investment was only $15.00. Another was the 67 impala I picked up with a 327 4 speed. That drivetrain emended up in a 64 corvette that a friend was restoring.

The pony got hit in the front right when it was in my driveway. [emoji849] that was after it was done. The car was midnight blue done in lacquer and cleared and was straight. It was also being used as a DD so, I sold it while still nice.

The Vette that the drivetrain went into ended up being a 97 point car. That same guy was the one that painted the Mustang. Actually reconnected with him an FB this year after 35+ years of not knowing what happened to us.

i have a friend that has an e39 and he updated to the euro LED tails but i cuoldnt figure out how to code hsi LCM for it.

Try changing LED_RUECKLICHT_OPTION in the light module to aktiv using NCS Expert.

EDIT: Oh sorry, forgot that you can't connect to it. What year is his car? If it's pre-2001 then you'll probably need the ACS adapter that connects to the round plug under the hood. Then again, it must be pre-2001 since he did a retrofit and 2001+ had the facelift lights. :)

I used the bmw scanner cable to OBDII port inside the car. Friends E39 is the last year made, 2003. I could easily just uncheck and check off cold warm warnings for the lights so if he got LED it would be no problem.

Today i swapped the left cluster pin actuator (the push-spring thingy) from the cluster from my last ZHP over to the one in my current car. The little plastic clip that hits the sensor had broken off so i have not been able to reset the trip mileage since i got the car. One of those little things that drives you nuts, and i had been putting it off for a while.

I also swapped the cluster from the coupe in briefly to confirm that the sedan cluster is faulty. And it is. When i did the swap all of the chimes worked. Put the original sedan one back in and nada. So at some point i will do the coding/programming to map the cluster file over to the coupe cluster and have a 100% functioning cluster with correct mileage and no tamper dot. Eventually.

I just typed cluster a lot.

The cluster repair you posted yesterday has me thinking about repairing mine, since I have the exact same problem - can't reset the trip gauge or change the oil service interval (yet alone get to all the other hidden functions)

I've watched the 50sKid video on repairing the same problem with the right side clock button (he has great video's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3kPO_VeHwM&t=57s).

But wondering if anyone with a backup cluster laying around would be willing to sell just the left push button stalk? Should look like the image I found below, and 50sKid is pointing to it installed in the 2nd pic. It appears that it can't be purchased separately and the cheapest eBay prices for an entire cluster (from Lithuania and from a diesel 3 Series) start at $33. Clearly willing to pay for it........

yep, that's it. the "male" piece in the middle section (where the stalk cover meets the body) had broken off. such an annoying little thing...

it's surprising that you can't find those pins by themselves...

EDIT: i found an ebay listing here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-E46-3-Series-1998-2005-Speedo-Clocks-Dials-Reset-Select-Button-Pin-Genuine/352337045129?hash=item5208eca689:g:0zcAAOSwqMRa3fz 8

But if I were you, I'd go buy a lottery ticket quick because from the eBay listing, looks like this guy posted this at 10:47 PDT today, right after I posted my message here (and that's when I stopped looking)! What great luck (and timing)! And very helpful to me of course. Much appreciated

Now I've got to swallow hard, get out my wallet and decide to either pay this guy $25.93 for this little thing, or get the entire cluster from a 2001 diesel in Lithuania for $33 in a month or so. I think it's going to be door #1 for $25.93

I was initially concerned about access to the Koni's, but the bar comes off with just two allen bolts so it's pretty quick to remove. I'm thinking of drilling a hole in the strut tower plates large enough to access the Koni's adjustment knob. The plates don't really need to be solid IMHO.

Accessing your camber plates would probably not be possible though.

Drying doesn’t seem as effective probably because the airflow is too diffused. I feel when I tried that water just blows somewhere else on the car and I ended up chasing a water droplet from front to back. [emoji23] Blowers seem to be good at evacuating pools of water within cracks so you can dry with a towel.

Also a highway interstate blow dry (at “drying” speed) is even more fun. [emoji41] But you also have to drift to get the side of the car dry.

Went to the local pick a part junk yard. Only got a rear view mirror and some small stuff.

Vanos refresh showed up along with the block off plate. So tomorrow will be a thrash to put it all back together.

Pics tomorrow

@704sw I know you've been waiting for this for a while. It only took 5+ months to install.

Replaced the original foglights with yellow Laminx for Winjet foglights with clear Laminx. The rear of the old ones was really flaky.

And I also replaced the serpentine belt, which took 10x longer than it should.

Winter tires off, summer tires back on, new rear brakes (rotors, pads, sensors), car washed and waxed. Ready for summer!

I bought my car in October and put it straight into winter storage. It's finally out, spring is here in NH. The previous owner had apparently buffed it (very poorly) before the sale and I just couldn't live with all those swirl marks. But today, a full car detail including clay bar and 4 coats of wax........... what a difference. Black paint is a mirror finish. Showroom ready inside and out. Now I'm happy - ready for summer!

That's a lot of hard work isn't it?! Looks good buddy. I remember after I detailed the ZHP with claybar, buff, polish, sealant and wax I couldn't stop petting the cars paint because it was so smoooooth

gotta say, that extra attention to the shine puts a different kinda smile on your face........ I'm beaming when on a beautiful spring day I'm just cruizin' by in a 13 year old car that people are turning their heads to get a look at when it goes by

Yo @ZHPizza those license plate bulbs you told me to take to Ohio are finally getting used. Funny we made the same mistake buying sedan lights.

Posted in my project thread but I'll drop this here too:

ARC-8s installed. Somehow Apex shipped me a set of 9.5s to go with the 9s. Tried the 9.5s first (love the concave look), but They were too much wheel so i stuck with the 9s. Need to switch out to BMW center caps but I'm liking the new look.

Hah, mine didn’t even have one. Just a rusty, twisted 6” nub attached to the transmission.

What exactly is that

The bracket from the bottom of the tranny to the exhaust pipes about 1’ down from the manifolds.

I picked up brand new stuff from Pelican Parts at a $50 savings over ecstuning.com. Granted the stuff at ECS was genuine BMW and I ended up with after market.

It's a steel bracket!

Looks like there was no way in hell that nut was coming off.... probably a good thing that it broke off for you...

I had to take mine off when I swapped by exhaust a few weeks ago.... I left it on the exhaust until I had to off the car... wasn't quite as bad as yours and was salvageable but I had to use heat to get the nut off...

Well, I replaced the fuel pump gasket on the ZHP, as the indy who did the FP put it in upside down and crushed it. Clown shoes.
