Saturday, I successfully did my first ever front control arm bushing job on my zhp.
Also installed aeurotray and "ultimate cupholders" as replacement for the old ones.
Two very different jobs.. but almost feels new again!
Next weekend, i'll do headlight lense replacements and new turn signals
cheers everyone!

Let me know what you think of the Ultimate Cupholder. I’ve been eying one of those for 2 different cars now.

Got it! The only thing you can do it keep the seal in good condition and/or position the door latch striker a bit closer so the door is more snug.
Insurance gave me a new $1000 door seal from my recent vandalization. So I have my door striker positioned out just a bit because the new seal is still very tight and puffy. LOL I’m not OCD enough to worry about the alignment gap. As the seal seats more and more I’ll align it to be tighter.
So this is what I was talking about http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=388574
not an e46, but im talking about the gap between the trim and and car. Just wondering if there is stuff i can apply in there to water proof the gap

I mean you could caulk it if it really bothers you that much. I haven't noticed anyone complaining about water ingress through there though.

^ I’m with Pizza. Because it’s so darn good.
I have heard of no instances where water comes in from there. Those are channels meant to handle rain so water isn’t dripping into you when the door or window is open and it’s raining. Your actual door seals should be doing their job and keeping water out.

That gap is normal and is by design...

Oh believe me I know the gap is normal, and by no means do I plan on caulking it haha. I think I will just spray some wax in there. Worst case scenario i wasted 5 minutes of my life. I was thinking maybe some lithium grease, but that will just get cleaned out when I wash the car. It has rained heavily on the car and yeah, it hasn't leaked, but eh why not

Let me know what you think of the Ultimate Cupholder. I’ve been eying one of those for 2 different cars now.
Well, so far they've been great... I have them both placed in the passenger side, about an inch apart or they rattle... as expected :)
Build quality is great too. Pliable Metal on the outside, with soft felt type material on the inside. They hold the drinks firmly and out of sight/mind so you can focus on driving.
As far as fitment goes, it looks like they weren't made for weather-tech type floor mats - the lip on those seems to get in the way of the cup holder laying flush. However, I just put them up a little higher to accommodate, and that was an easy fix.
Can fit just about any cup size... I've transported larger drinks, water bottles, and even coffee with a lid stopper, without issue.
Cleaned up my center console quite a bit.. my OEM cupholders had seen better days.
Works as described! :thumbsup

Tire Rack. Advertised price was around $210for the 235/40/18 but they discount it when you put it in your cart. The total discount ended up being a couple of dollars more than the shipping cost. So the net price was $198/ea..
Thanks I got 2.

Euro Tail Halogen tails have arrived and we're installed promptly. All halogen bulbs converted to LED. And upgraded the LP lights while I was there.
I now have amber turn signals instead of stupid red lights. Wish I could have went with the full LED lights, but the Euro Halogens were 6x cheaper and still look good with the LED bulbs.

And there are the times where things make even less sense, such as the previous generation Tiguan. It has amber lenses for turn signals at the bottom of the housing, but the turn signals are actually the brake light flashing red. WTF??

Yep, those amber turn signals are fake. lol
E60 LCI turn signals... clear lense for LED turn signal, and it's... RED? With incandescent brake lights? Really?

E60 LCI turn signals... clear lense for LED turn signal, and it's... RED? With incandescent brake lights? Really?US DOT code states that a turn signal has to be of a certain square inches. If it is less than that you can't use it as a turn signal. So the way around it is to use the brake light with dual functionality. That's why you will see all these American manufactured vehicles with one piece tail lights that literally just function as brake/turn signal and reverse.
With the European manufacturers, they just use the same housing and code I for brake tail combo.
I coded mine to have the four housings light up when the brakes are applied, and the lower portion are the indicators.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180310/6cc1580584f7bfdace664a21c9478aab.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180310/76332d64cb9bfef8b058b95acafd79c1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180310/3b14d68635a2175c919dbf3fb02268cf.jpg

No need to downshift from 6th fear to pass on the highway and the off the line torque is just insane. Absolutely woke the car up! Going to have an empty gas tank a little sooner than usual, methinks.

picked up a super clean accident free clean carfax 2000 alpine white wagon last week. picked up a parts car to swap everything over.. decided to keep it for myself.
i cleaned the car and took pictures and wrote up a detailed for sale ad last night.......... then felt that pull from inside that said its permanent.... dont do it you will regret it....
i cant do it. cant sell old red, white S54 wagon will be up for sale soon :)I am incredibly confused by this post. Lol

I am incredibly confused by this post. Lol
Sent from my Pixel using TapatalkI'm sorry. Basically I picked up a station wagon with a new E46 parts car and was going to build a wagon for myself and sell my red car. I got all hyped up in his new wagon craze that everybody's being bitten by....
But as I started taking pictures of my car to post for sale I've came incredibly sad thinking about that and immediately changed my mind.
And now it's the white station wagon that I'm going to be selling in a month after I finish it with an s54 swap M3 Brakes and the LSD rear end.

That escalated quickly
i initially picked up the wagon and parts car to flip... then fell in love with the "idea" of an S54 wagon... then started reading everyone over on M3 forum go nuts over some guys consistent S54 wagon builds.... its like they are so enamored over there. people were waning to get rid of their super nice M3s just to have a wagon S54 lol. I become entranced with the idea myself but just can not pull the trigger on selling my red car.
i dont get it.. its like somewhere someone flipped this Wagon switch and now literally everyone drools over even factory wagons. its insane.

yesterday i ordered an OEM Grey/Tri-Stitch steering wheel from Coby. I like the Perf Tri-Stitch leather enough, but i really miss the Alcantara. to me, it is an essential part of the ZHP experience. i already have a buyer lined up for my perf leather wheel, and have an extra core to exchange so should actually break even or better.
i also have a Coby Alcantara ZHP shift knob to match that i just haven't gotten around to installing. part of the problem is i just CANNOT get the stinkin' leather one off!! i have yanked as hard as i can and...nothing. i wonder if it's related to the fact that i had a Rogue Octane SSK installed....anyone have any ideas?

Push the gear lever into 1st/3rd and then quickly yank it into 2nd/4th while pulling away. Mine's on tight, but that always gets it off of the shifter.

i figure an Alpine white clean carfax, no accident S54 swap, brakes, LSD wagon with factory xenon and tan interior with tan M3 seats (recovering with Lseat seat covers) with lumbar and bolster control could hopefully get around 12k maybe 13k

Was a warm 54F today so I broke the ZHP out of garage-jail and took it for a wash. The hand wash place in town is closed on sundays so I drove to another hand wash place 8mi away and dang am I glad that I did. $24 for their top wash, under carriage, interior dressing, tire dressing, spray wax, everything. This week for the ZHP 2.0 I have order
-Ground Control, Street/School coilovers
-New brakes all around
-Z4M FCABS
-M3 RTABS with limiters
-Front strut braces
-OEM Clears
-New Style 216's
-New Headlight lenses
Now all I need to do is get a M3 Strut bar or BMW Performance one as well as an intake. Then remove the splash guards, get some sunroof shade clips to fix that, Tint the windows a bit and get some new clips for the side moldings in a few places. I am basically doing the same thing I did with my last ZHP and making a Silver Gray twin minus the BBK.

It was pretty close to $1,500 for the diff (MF had a 15% off sale, but they hit me for shipping) and $150 for the cover and, yes, it was DIY (a garage would probably charge about $300). This is the second diff swap I've done, and I actually think it's a relatively easy mod. The hardest part, of course, is getting it back in. It's funny... the first time I used a conventional jack, and it went slow but smooth. This time I tried using a floor jack but I just couldn't get it positioned right, so I finally got pissed, pushed the jack out of the way, put that $@&?! on my chest and benched-pressed it in there! Quicker that way...

On a different note, I got one of my rear springs out today and discover that my new ST "lowering" springs are actually taller than stock (they also have more coils). What do you make of that? If they do ultimately lower the car, they must not be as stiff, right? In which case, I'm beginning to question changing them out.

Installing a set of Koni Yellows. Tackled the rear shocks today, and I'm having the damndest time trying to adjust them--even after reading the piss-poor instructions and watching a bunch of crappy videos. I have the internally adjustable ones... I push the rod in, cannot feel any engagement, but turned the cylinder body CCW a bunch of times (trying for full-soft) while pushing the rod down--not an easy task. At this point, I'm ready to just install and hope for the best. Not at all sure how you'd balance the setting left to right... Frustration is setting in. Any knowledgeable input wild be much appreciated!

I would say “you have to be pretty damn strong to do it,” but you routinely bench press rear diffs so strength isn’t an issue.
IIRC what I did was depress the rod with a hex bit in place (it is hex, right?) and use my stabilizing hand to rotate the entire tube around it. I could be dead wrong, it’s been a year since I did it. I also used the welcome mat in the garage to keep the concrete from destroying the bottom of the shock.

I've been soldering a lot of stuff recently, and I used my new found soldering skills to repair the rear tail lights in my X5. They have a strange issues where the bulb holder comes kind of loose from the tail light housing and causes arcing which makes the housing corrode. I scraped out all the corrosion and found holes that were close to a millimeter (!!!) deep and filled them in with solder. Now the "check rear light" and "check brake light" error messages are gone. Only 2 error messages to go.

I will be putting a new belt tensioner and pulley on since the existing one is sounding a little rumbly, but that will come after I do the OFMG on my E61. It too is leaking but not making near the mess. Unfortunately, I'll be ordering a new water pump and thermostat for it since it's apparently throwing a code. Regarding my Koni Sport drama, Koni responded rather quickly, and I was able to talk through my concerns with a confidence-inspiring technical rep (so refreshing). Essentially, all of my perceived differences between the shocks are meaningless to the function of the shock, so I just need to to pull them out, readjust properly (counting the turns), and reinstall.

I decided not to re-bush the whole rear sub frame because it doesn't need it. With the exception of the diff bushings, everything is in perfect shape. The Guibo and center bearing show no signs of deterioration or wear but are getting replaced because I already bought the parts....
IDK if it's because the car has been stored for the winter and garage kept in the summer but I'm not seeing any deterioration of the rubber suspension/driveline bits other than the FLCAB and the diff bushings. I'm at 147k

The lows are still a bit cold here, but ultimately it doesn't matter as long as it doesn't snow. That's where it would really be a problem! Temps aren't low enough to cause freezing over here so there's that.

My friend was telling me he's never had to do subframe bushings on the E46's that have come through the dealer when he still worked there as a tech. He said they rarely need replacing.

My friend was telling me he's never had to do subframe bushings on the E46's that have come through the dealer when he still worked there as a tech. He said they rarely need replacing.
I think mine are still good with 293k+ on 'em...
Yea when I was still up north I asked Kristen to bring home from BMW dealer, the tool to do the RTAB and she said they didn't have one because they never have to replace them.
I haven't been easy on my car for the 100K+ miles I put on it... I thought, with all the talk about it on the internet, that all of the bushings and rubber bits would be worn out by now but I'm finding it's quite the opposite...

I'm Finally getting around to doing maintenance on the car that I've been neglecting for the last couple of years. I have a pile of of parts to go in.
I'm at 147k
That makes sense. Rubber loooooves to crack in cold weather. Probably why the rubber bushings in my Florida car look good at 155k.

Changed the short shifter pin to the "35% shorter than stock" setting and realigned the shifter cables. Think I need to get a taller and heavier shift knob.
Shifter cables are interesting though, the side to side movement needs to be sured up but the front to back distance is literally two inches from 1-2, etc.

The temps don't really bother me, as long as it doesn't snow. That's the real killer.
Will probably be buying performance winter tires next winter season. This rubber band feeling of the WS-80's was starting to get old.

i find the x-ice3's really good for this - they are a good balance. michelin does have a 'performance winter' but the x-ice3 is actually really good. i run them on both the Touring and the X3.

The consensus was that the Blizzaks were better from a snow grip perspective, if I remember correctly. It was a long time ago, I don't remember.
I've realized that living on the coast means I will likely never need the total grip the WS-80's provide, and need more dry and wet handling. I've had great experience with the LM series, so perhaps I'll give those another go. The Sottozeroes we're great as well when I had them.

Haha. No, but when you accelerate, the revs rise - then drop - then rise - and drop again.... maybe all over a 300rpm range - but you’ve somehow gotten to 40mph. It’s a weird sensation, and not something I like. :)
Try one out, I think (hope) you’ll see what I mean. :)

Got my rear shocks (Koni Sports) swapped out for the third time--adjusted properly this time. This job also made me realize, more than ever, that there's A LOT of bad information on the Internet: The US Air Force has deemed Nylok nuts reusable several times in all but the most critical areas (which is good enough for me), the size of the top nut on the shock is actually M10 with 1.0 pitch, said nut should be torqued to a mere 10 lb-ft (which is barely enough to stop th mount assembly from turning relative to the shaft) and, as mentioned above, the uninstalled rebound rate of the piston has nothing to do with the adjustment of adjustable shocks.
I also repainted my rear anti-sway bar, did a little more cleaning around the front wheel wells, and removed one of my struts which went very easy (getting ready to install Koni Sports in the front, too). However, changing all of my license plate screws to stainless (HIGHLY recommended) was a different story--one was so corroded I had to drill it out and replace the nut in the bracket... &%$#@!

Managed to replace one Koni strut today... what a PITA. I spent half my time looking for the various parts and tools I hadn't seen in a year or more and about half an hour searching the Web to find out what in hell the little, white plastic disk was for and where to install it (Koni instructions really suck). Getting the compressed spring and assembly together and aligned was tough and figuring out how to torque the top nut of the shock shaft was fun--NOT! Well, at least it went back on the car easily enough.

Depends if it has the upper perch already installed. I’m pretty sure the PSS don’t, but some others do. That reminds me I need to order a replacement part for my camber plate, and then I’ll get to play with spring compressors...again.

really? with lowering springs, you shouldn't need spring compressors.... or, at least, i don't need them. :) i compress by hand and then thread on the top nut.
with stock springs, compressors are required.
with PSS, no compressor required.

Try as I might, I couldn’t compress them enough to expose enough thread to get the nut to grab on. It was really close though.
Using the compressors with the H&Rs is much less terrifying than the OE springs...definitely something I don’t have to convince you of.

no, you don't! i hate those things. but, i have come up with a way to do it that doesn't terrify me as much - i double wire-lock the compressors to the springs, so they can't come off. it's tedious, but it works. i've done 4 springs since 'the incident' - no slippage.

I was doing this solo, which was probably the issue. I really like Nate’s technique of breaking the top hat free from the strut, and slowly releasing the strut from underneath with a floor jack. That of course doesn’t help with reassembly.

Yeah ET35 on a 9.5” is really aggressive for a non-M. I tried doing that with my VMRs in the rear. They were 9.5” ET45 and putting a 10mm spacer on it made the car completely undriveable even with rolled fenders. It’s probably because I was on 265s. You might get away with 245s.

the firehawks do seem a bit narrower, yeah - BP's got them in 255's and they do seem narrower on an 8.5" wheel - they actually look really good on that width.
18x9 ET42 would be the right choice for a sedan, and for keeping the track widths the same ratio F/R as they are stock. i hear you on the Call Of The Concave.... but dang man, you're going to need to roll the frig out of the rear fenders, and i don't think you're going to be happy with that.

Just make sure you remove the rear bumper clip and shave down that stud. It can be a killer of your sidewall. Your rear bumper will not change in fitment gap. Roll your fenders hard. Remove the sealant and fold it over aggressively. Keep paint hot to the touch so it doesn’t crack at the fold. Then once done rolling I suggest you rust proof the sh!t out of your rear fender with sanding and coatings. Rolling that hard/thick of German sheet metal will crack the paint where the roller wheel is contacting, allowing for water to get under the paint in the near future. You don’t want to have to deal with that. My car was rusting at both rear fenders because of that oversight.

I’ll *always* have a soft spot for the Z3 platform. My neighbor’s girlfriend had a 2.8 Z3 Coupe when they first came out, and a few years later my buddy’s dad bought a 3.0 black on black Z3 vert wearing 17” Style 32s. It was pure sex on wheels, and was a major factor in developing my love for BMW (the first one I really got up close and personal with).
I’m just so afraid if I ever drive an OG Clownshoe it’ll somehow be a letdown; like it wouldn’t be everything I’d hyped it up to be. I’ve driven a 3.0si Z4 and loved it, and I’ve driven an S54, so I’d more or less know what to expect, if that makes sense.

BTW 8.5 ET 35 fit just fine on the front. The front is at about -1.5 degrees. I took some of the rear negative camber out in the pics below

I had 8.5ET30 up front (225/40) and even then it only rubbed on severe bumps, running roughly -1.5° camber. Without my camber plates and different spacers I’m sitting around -0.6° effective 8.5ET32.5 and I’m rubbing on the same size bumps.

Congrats on your Z4, FungShui. Looks like it came with ARC8's, lowered suspension, a splitter, CF mirrors, painted reflectors, aero skirts, and a stubby antenna. Any other mods? Hope you'll join us over at Zpost -- great group of friendly, helpful folks just like here.

Looks like a stud conversion too. That splitter looks fantastic from the side profile.

the firehawks do seem a bit narrower, yeah - BP's got them in 255's and they do seem narrower on an 8.5" wheel - they actually look really good on that width.
18x9 ET42 would be the right choice for a sedan, and for keeping the track widths the same ratio F/R as they are stock. i hear you on the Call Of The Concave.... but dang man, you're going to need to roll the frig out of the rear fenders, and i don't think you're going to be happy with that.
Check check check yo tread width bois. I keep seeing all this discussion of what wheels will fit what and 255's and blah blah so I looked up the specs for my wide ass 235/40r18 Coopers:
Size Tread Width (mm)
235/40R18 8.46 (215)
245/40R18 8.82 (224)
255/35R18 8.66 (220)
yupyupyup the tread on my 235's is only 5mm narrower than the same tire in a 255 (note that the 245 is even wider!)
Tire sizing is not even a little bit consistent.

Is there any reason I couldn't or wouldn't want to use my current OEM sized staggard front and rear tires on four 18"x8.5" ET35 wheels? I'd hate to have to junk a set of tires.
My problem is that the Apex SM-10s only come in a few offsets... none are really suitable for a staggered setup...

Could just be the camera angle, but at that distance I'd expect the DS beam to be about a foot closer to the center... Or maybe the car wasn't square with the garage door?

what is the difference between "Sect. Width" and "Tread Width"? i'm assuming it includes the sidewalls? if so that should be the figure that really matters no?

tread width is the width of the actual tread.
sectional width is the width of the tire at it's widest point, with the wheel mounted - tire rack lists the wheel width used for determining that measurement. super helpful.

BMW used the sealed spherical uppers in both upper and lower locations on the M3. it definitely helps rear wheel articulation. cheap n' easy upgrade. add in sealed spherical RTABs and you've got some serious grip back there!
Peter, what's the story on using all uppers?
Part number 33326775551 can be used on the upper and lower locations.
Non-m cars have a rubber bushing in the lower and the m-cars have the ball joint in both locations.
Lemforder brand is roughly $30 per ball joint. Just need the tool to remove and install them.

Was that the Schwaben set that was on sale at ECS last month? I bought that... Works great! It literally took more time to set the tool up that it did to get the control arm lower bushing out using an impact gun
I like that it has a bearing on the nut instead of a plain washer.. still grease that bearing up and grease the threads on the rod and it will last forever.
The only thing I didn't like about it is it didn't include a sleeve big enough to do the rear diff bushing. I had to use one from my ball joint press...
