My wife freaks out when her F30 gets to 1/2 tank remaining, but the boys will drive the E28 down to 1 liter remaining! I've tried to make them understand that fuel cools the in-tank fuel pump, water and/or sediment collects at the bottom, etc. Guess they need to run out or break down to learn the lesson...

Rovert
01-08-2018, 08:06 AM
Keep teaching them about fuel cooling the pump but stuff collecting at the bottom is a myth. If you take a tank apart you’ll see that the fuel pump must suck fuel from the lowest part of the tank so whatever stuff that settles to the bottom has already been sucked up at the next engine start. When driving the fuel tank contents are being sloshed and mix around so it’s a constant mix of yummies that the fuel pump must suck up. LOL there’s also a fine mesh filter at the pump inlet then you fuel filter to cover for more fine particulate.

Once it warms up, the seats and middle door panel cards will all be done in ZHP factory color Natural Brown and the headliner and pillars will be done in Alcantara.

At that point, my car which has a 3.64 diff from a ZHP, will be almost as good as a ZHP minus the cams and a 4k power dip :cheers

For me, I took apart two sets of different color door cards and then put them back together. The whole process took about two weeks. I worked on a little bit each day. It took longer than I expected. I recommend only using one door panel set and just dying the leathered the color that you want. It's faster than having to take apart and reassemble two entire sets.

On mine I started on Friday at 3pm and had the new carpet and dash replaced by about 10pm (had my kids helping, so worked slow as I was explaining things and letting them turn wrenches). The door panels (black for now) were done the following Saturday morning. Then it took me all day Saturday to disassemble the seats (remove the backs and side panels) and dye the seat backs, refurb and paint the center console, Re glue A and C pillars, and it was 100% "done" by Sunday afternoon.

If you had all the black pieces and weren't dyeing certain parts, you could easily do it in a day.

I've got my tan door panels apart and I'm just waiting till warmer weather to dye my seats and pull my headliner and pillars for alcantara wrapping. Also need a black arm rest. So it's way better than all tan, but not done yet....

Put in new air filters, engine and cabin. The air filter for the PI is quite the PITA, and expensive. Fortunately some digging around here revealed that NAPA's Silver 36301 filter fits nicely and is a fraction of the cost.

I’ll check it out. It’ll be really weird not calling it Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca anymore. I hope someone picks up sponsorship soon, since I’ve read most residents and developers in the area want to get rid of the track. But it brings in a lot of money and taxes for the county, so it probably won’t actually happen.

I think so. When I decided to get a set of wheels for winter tires, I originally wanted the 68s, but they were a staggered set, and I wanted something square instead. After a lot of looking, I ended up with the 44s. Functional, but not very pretty.

Anyways, came upon a great deal for the 68s and was able to get 6 wheels (4 fronts and 2 rears) so I snagged it. The fronts are 0.5" narrower than the 44s, but my 225-45/17s still fit just fine. I would like to say that I picked that size because I was planning to get 68s eventually but that would not be the truth :)

Just got lucky that the size tire I picked worked for the 68s. Now I am a happy camper :thumbsup

I've been looking to square up my set of 68's for a while now. I also have a staggered set. The 225's look so stupid stretched on the 8.5" rears! It looks even more awkward when I rotate the tires; the 8.5's don't look right in the front with tires stretched that much. lol

That's how the one original to the car met its fate. Hit a pothole so harsh in NY while on the highway that the trim panel fell out and wouldn't clip back in.

I saw a neat little in-field engineering trick someone did that I thought was a good idea. They just hot-glued a couple of paper clips to the back side of the cover so that the edge hung over enough to hold it in place. After the hot glue dried, they applied silicone caulk over the paper clips.

Seems like a lot of that white plastic used in the car like on the pillars, this cover, etc. are made by the same company, and it's brittle nasty stuff.

sourced an M3 washer tank locally from an Early metal bumper 2001 m3. this version of the washer tank actually bolts to existing holes on our ZHP bumper support so kool. I have a m3 washer tank for a kevlar bumper M3 and it never fit so i thought i wouldnt be able to switch to an M3 tank.

after going through this now, this is a mod that any ZHP person can do to free up some space under the hood. there used to be a retrofit relocation kit for this on ECS but the link is dead now but still shows on google through a search.

Also decided to hijack the driver side brake duct to use for the CSL cold air intake tube. this is the same diameter as the CSL factory intake tube. 2.5 inches i believe. the CSL intake is a split design with a huge 5+ inch hole under the hood with a smaller 2.5 inch hole under neath that goes to this tube to get fresh cold air from the ground. if i could make the OEM CSL tube work I would have got that instead but for now ribbed tubing was the way to go.

i need to find something to make it more pretty in the brake duct, any suggestions

I'm digging that washer setup. It fits ok with the passenger brake duct and everything?

And this might be a good option for your intake tube:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dual-Hole-Air-Duct-Fog-Covers-ABS-Fits-BMW-E46-3-Series-M-Tech-II-Front-Bumper/282559440497

Note that the ones made for the M3 bumper ducts DO NOT fit the Mtech II. I have a pair of M3 covers sitting in my garage because dum dum.

yes it fits with the brake duct just fine. it goes around it actually.

the only thing it doesnt fit with is the ambient air temp sensor in the lower fender liner. i had to remove it and cut a new hole further back and mount it in the new hole. it hits the plug and wires. M3s have different fender lines so i guess theirs is in a different location but everything else fit fine.

thanks for the link. i added it to my watch list.

No but I suspect it will come to that next time I unbolt that seat. Once I drilled the fragment thin enough to turn, the bit pushed what was left through the bottom and kept **most** of the threads intact. It’s good enough for now, but we’ll see. At least I’ll be able to pass both NC and pre-HPDE inspection.

Unrelated: when I plug in to run PA Soft I get a “hardware not ready” error on the software. This happens with your cable and the one I just bought. What’s the likelihood I have bad wiring or something to my OBD2? The cable’s lights come on, but nothing on the computer end...

Helluva lot easier than messing with a helicoil too.

Sounds like it's either the car or computer then. We can hook up to it next week with my computer and eliminate a variable.

The PA Soft interface is a piece of crap - it does this to me all the time. I just keep unplugging / plugging in the cable into various USB ports until it works.
This is why I avoid using PA Soft whenever possible.

What sometimes works is shutting down, unplugging from computer, turning on and booting, and plugging it back in. *Sometimes*

i have this issue every once in a while; it's Windows 10 "re-detecting" the cable as 'BMW Scanner 1.x' in device manager. i just go into device manager, find said device (usually with a yellow ! next to it), and manually force the FTDI 'USB Serial Converter' driver upon it. works every time.

but i agree - it's a pain. it never happened under Windows XP or Windows 7 x64. Windows 8/10 x64, though - yep.

i do like the interface, for simplicity - it is always my go-to for scanning for codes.

Yes, Euro Spec was the S50B30, and S50B32.

The early US (and apparently Canadian) M3s are delineated S50B30US, followed by the S52B32. At least that’s my understanding. Per Wikipedia, there were 45 Euro spec S50B30 M3s imported into Canada.

Last saturday, fixed coolant leak with a 49 cent o-ring. Thought it was going to be a hose connected to the ET. Jacked it up and dropped the belly pan. Turned out it was the temperature sensor on the lower radiator hose connector.

Dealer wanted $6, was a 30 mile drive and was closing any way. Got a similar o-ring at the local Ace hardware store for 49 cents. Took about 20 minutes to replace. Didn't even have to drain the coolant. Easy peasy.

The other day I disconnected the anti-roll bars, simply because in this area the car gets pounded by road deficiencies, which means the end links (spherical rod ends up front) wear even more. I swapped to snow tires recently and figured the handling is going to suck anyway with snows, so I disconnected the bars (front is just disconnected and tied out of the way with zip-ties, but the rear bar is completely out because there's no way to tie it up without hitting suspension components.)

I have to say I was very surprised the body roll isn't that bad without them. I'd recommend it for anyone driving on these sh*tty NE roads. Bonus: when you take the snows off and reconnect the bars, it feels like a Porsche. :biggrin

We rented the outback in 2016 when we in Denver for thanksgiving. It felt quite underpowered (this was at 5000-12000 feet altitude) but we quite comfortably covered more than 1000 miles in 3 days. So we thought we would at least test drive it at regular altitude and see how it feels. Agree on the CVT tranny, that wasn’t good. It definitely wasn’t wow but thought it wasn’t bad either.

We are looking at the crosstek cause it comes with a manual transmission.

My fiancé’s cousin has the Santa Fe and I agree it’s a lot of car for the money.

Changed the oil, seafoamed it, aaaand fixed a wiring issue with the new fog lights. Well, the issue wasn't with them. The old wiring was worn. Replaced it with no issues.

I was going to wash it and theeeeeen it started raining. So maintenance day done for now. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180217/8c87d78db157d1a1d2eb90c0246abdff.jpg

How bad was that job? My passenger window rolls down, but like halfway through the window starts creaking and coming down crooked and will never fully come down. The only thing I can think of is the regulator failing.

Tedious but it’s not bad. Take the door panel off, then the air bag, then vapor barrier. Then disconnect regulator from window. Swap motor over to new regulator. Put it all back together.

Some good YouTube videos out there.

Yea, it’s a time consuming job. But if you’ve had door panel off before and know how to do it...the process can take less time than putting away tools.

You’ll need a torx driver t25 I think. A clip pry tool and ten mm socket and wrench...

I leave the vapor barrier attached at the bottom & lower sides, releasing it from the top & upper corners, and peeling it down just far enough to get the regulator out. This helps assure you won't get water in the car from a loose barrier. Of course, if someone has been in the door before you there is a good chance the lower edge of the barrier is already detached! Get a box of butyl rope caulk to reattach it.
You will probably need to power the new regulator to get the clip for the window in the right location to reattach it. Don't turn on your car with the air bag unplugged or you'll get an SRS warning light that you'll need to turn off.

8 or 9mm to remove the 2 bolts that hold the window to the regulator.

I was able to slide the regulator along its tracks to put it right at the service openings. I had the motor out of the regulator to do this.

I will heartily recommend the Outback. Awesome in bad weather and surprisingly roomy. Was very unimpressed with the CrossTrek, but I think they have brought out a new model since 2014 so it may have improved. Just felt very cheap.

After the plows came at 2:30AM I woke up my trusty E46, turned on M track mode, left my driveway sideways, got onto the main road sideways, got to my friends place, did a few donuts while waiting for him to come down, and go get his car. LOL

Guys don’t be going out in any type of snow with AS3+ tires. There’s not enough snow siping compared to a Conti DWS06. This 135i couldn’t do a thing and was helpless sliding down this hill until he stopped on the roadway. He has plenty of tread life left and they’re amazing in the dry and wet. Just don’t give them snow.

Which helmet did you get?

A Zamp full-face, SA2015. Pretty good reviews and features for the price, and CMP (my closest track) doesn’t allow open-face. Since it’s more or less my first dabbling in organized motorsport activity I didn’t want to spend a ton, while also not skimping on my personal safety. With that said, I know I’ll love it, and will improve my equipment as my skills and speed develop. My neighbor is an instructor with the PCA and told me, “be careful with tracking. Not because of safety, that’s a given; be careful because it’s more addicting than any drug out there.”

Set up a "Quickjack" BL-7000 SLX--not cheap, but it's built like a tank and works slick as shit. The really special thing I like about it is I don't have to deform my front reinforcement plate anymore to lift the front (got a new one waiting to go in). I'm glad I went with the 7,000lb capacity version--it's not that heavy and can lift my SUV's.

I really need something. The chassis is so short and stiff on the VW Golf... Colin was over today and we did his DSG tranny fluid (40k required). We jacked up the back corner and two other corners lifted off the ground! It’s really awkward to get jack stands in place correctly.

I can easily store them under the car, too--and the hoses are all quick-disconnect. Also, I use those rubber adapters, on top of the rubber lifting blocks, that interlock with the lift pads on the car--works great! By the way, the optional SUV lift risers showed up today, and they're super heavy-duty--actually seem worth the extra $220.

Darn. I should have asked. This is one of those jobs that is tough, because it could just need cleaning. I hear there is a little hole that can get clogged in the sensor, and sometimes it is the electrical connector, but it is such a pain to get to, it makes you cautious to have a new one standing by regardless. Labor > Part. :) I think I'm going to follow the TIS procedure and pull the tank above the master cylinder, then power flush the system and run the ABS motors via INPA while bleeding.

My indy told me I needed new front struts. So I was looking around and saw the tire rack was having a closeout on FSDs. Total was $568, no tax, no shipping and a $50 mail in rebate. So $518 for new struts and shocks- how does that fare on the deal-o-meter?That's a steal. I paid a little more and stacked several discounts + rebates to get there. Jump on it!

Phew! Glad I did. Ecs has them listed for $642 and couldn’t tell me what the rebate amount was for.

I’ll be honest, I never even knew tire rack did suspension stuff.

Don't hate me for not doing a mega-search of previous FSD threads, but I've read they are a great choice for the ZHP, so might jump on this deal. My '06 coupe has 60K miles, but I don't know what it was like when new (have had it <1.5 years). Do the FSDs raise the ride height? I'm not interested in that.
Thanks in advance

Just got off the phone with tire rack. They received a call from Koni and apparently FSDs are being discontinued. TR didn’t have anything in stock and arn’t able to get any more in so they refunded my purchase.

Arggg....

But to answer your question, I don’t think they’d raise your car. In most threads I’ve read, the consensus is that the springs control the height. But I’d rather have a zhp veteran confirm that.

Springs control ride height. I’d read that same thing (I don’t think it was on a BMW forum), but can’t fathom how dampers would impact it.

I need a pair of these. Track day (and alignment?) was not helpful to mine...

Where did you get them? @$198/ea?
Tire Rack. Advertised price was around $210for the 235/40/18 but they discount it when you put it in your cart. The total discount ended up being a couple of dollars more than the shipping cost. So the net price was $198/ea..

Bummer. I wonder if Koni is coming out with something "better, " or is the E46 platform too old so is being abandoned? Might have to find a close-to-Tire Rack price elsewhere. Please let us know if you find a reasonable option.

That’s an excellent question. Never thought of it that way. I hope they don’t forget about e46 owners. Surely they must know there’s a decent population of people still using them. Then again, id love to know if they came up with something even smoother than FSDs. Oh well, in the meantime....

It’s a chemical that bonds itself to glass surfaces to create a hydrophobic/water & snow repelling surface. They say it lasts 6 months on windshield and one year on all other surfaces but I’ve felt it is fine from a year to two years on the windshield.

I clayed just to remove any baked on bugs or road grime so I can have a greater glass surface for Aquapel to adhere to.

When people are driving in the pouring rain with sheeting/streaks and wipers that can’t move water away fast enough , Aquapel has helped me see through all that effortlessly. Even if a puddle is splashed on me I can still see while my wiper would take 1-2 seconds of time for me to see. At speed, a lot of distance can be covered in that amount of time and I just don’t want any surprises. It makes driving high speed in torrential downpours, stress free!

Ah ok that makes sense. I used the silicon wipe that came with my PIAA silicon wiper blades and that helped a bit. You're right though, the difference it makes driving in the rain is huge. At certain speeds I don't even need to use my windshield wipers anymore to see, the water just beads right off.

I've been looking into spraying or applying something into the space between the shadow liner and window frame, just for that peace of mind that water isnt leaking in under the shadowliner and going to places it shouldn't. Have y'all heard of anything like this?

I found my cause of water leaks when parked outside in rain or pouring rain is because the window seal is kinked somewhere. Under light, examine yours. Your finger will also feel it. I make sure with a towel I run it through and clean it out very well. Then on the kink I’ll massage it back to normal shape and then when I close the door I’ll press against the window and push it against the car firmly so when the window cinches up, the window will seat itself correctly in between the seals and make a good water resistant seal. You’ll need to keep that correct seating position in check for the next few weeks as the seal recovers and hopefully goes back to original shape.

Also use some kind of rubber care solution to keep the rubber moisturized. I use some made by Wurth.

I see what you're saying, but my seals are fine. I also recently conditioned them with some gummi pflege. What I meant was the gap between the shadowliner and the side of the car. There's about a centimeter gap between the shadowliner and car when you look at it from the top, so I have been wanting to spray some sort of hydrophobic compound in there to keep it water tight. I hope that makes more sense.

Got it! The only thing you can do it keep the seal in good condition and/or position the door latch striker a bit closer so the door is more snug.

Insurance gave me a new $1000 door seal from my recent vandalization. So I have my door striker positioned out just a bit because the new seal is still very tight and puffy. LOL I’m not OCD enough to worry about the alignment gap. As the seal seats more and more I’ll align it to be tighter.

Way better to keep it hot on the engine block while it’s exposed to warm your lunch than on a watery wiper fluid container.

Sorry I've been out of town.

MCS dampers with Eibach springs (600lb/700lb front/rear), built by MCS then shipped to Ground control in CA to complete everything else, add the weight jacks, front coil over assembly, and to put on the race camber plates etc.

New (my FOURTH) set of apex wheels, ARC-8 17" x 9.5" et35 hyper black

Set of four 255/40-17 Toyo R888R tires

New control arms, sparks, fuel pump and filter

AKG bushings for the entire car, including engine and trans mounts

A few cosmetic things that I'll post when they're on :)

New OMP WRC-R seat and Schroth harness to match drivers side

Looks like the list is closer to 11k ...

Sure does! The M56 valve cover has a built in CCV valve that feeds directly into the intake manifold. I ripped out all of the CCV parts and even replaced the dipstick tube with one from an M56 so no port to clog either. Pretty pumped to finish it up and see how it runs.

It's and extremely clean 3 owner car. 125k miles.

Last owner had it since 07. Honestly the car is like brand new. No finger nail chips on the soft touch plastics and the steering wheel is like brand new. I am in disbelief. I stumbled across it at a wholesale lot and had to buy it when I saw it. The wheels on it are the winters and it came with the 135's. The winters have near new Hakkapeliitta's. I can't believe I just stumbled upon this car ha!
