Got a new garage door opener today(which is a nice change from manually opening and closing for the last month), but on top of that the information that came with it featured an e46 ZCP(?) https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170928/2da9345e48d0035f608fa1f26462decb.jpg
Not a ZHP I know, but I figured it was still relevant

Must be interesting to drive a ZSP with the gauges, radio, HVAC controls, and wipers reversed.

Hahaha I didn’t notice that until now, can’t imagine why it’s set up like that unless they did it so they can use the inside of an e46 without paying BMW?

WOW, ok so my brother locked his keys in the trunk of his 330ci ZHP. Apparently he tried taking a pole and hitting the unlock button but tried getting another half inch of room so he pulled back on the glass a smidge and the whole window exploded.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170929/eb73c1b0c5660a954f081b04358cb36d.jpg
So now even though he reached his arm in and opened the door from the inside, the alarm system is engaged and won’t let any of the electronic buttons work, including the trunk switch. He doesn’t have a spare key, and his only key is in his trunk.
I mean I died when I walked out and saw what happened, even funnier that he was in strictly underwear
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170929/634785f9533471436e4d024908584275.jpg
For the most part the “safety glass” works, but his hand is still gnarly cut up.
Anyone know how to disengage that alarm system? We can’t even get to the trunk through the ski portal. I think now he’s resorting to removing the seats so that he can take the speaker out and reach his arm through the door.

I'm pretty sure all the coupes had folding rear seats.
Thing is, I'm not sure how he's going to remove the rear seats with them still latched in place.
Here's an idea... what if you removed some fuses? Could there be some fuses that could relinquish the alarm's hold of the locked doors and whatnot?

He probably could have done that yeah, but a google search wouldn’t bring it up. And the rear seats fold but the latch is inside the trunk, hence the reason he had to remove the speaker to reach back there to pull the latch

Did an oil change. I thought I figured out the access door...PITA once again. The new ones online have the metal screw. I have a plastic rivet with a plastic part that is pushed in/pulled out.
The cars been drinking oil as scheduled. When the old oil was poured into the containers, it only had enough for a 5 quart container and a few drops in another. For some reason, the coolant was also low. :eeps
I added some air to the tires. One of them was leaking. There was a screw in the tire, which came out on the way to Firestone or in their parking lot. The manual transmission threw them for a loop. One tech approached the car and walked back after opening the door. The parking spot was slightly downhill with a sidewalk in front. Yeah I had second thoughts... Next tech gets in. Brake lights go on...and then reverse lights. Brake lights go off...car moves forward...brake lights back on...brake lights off...car moves forward...brake lights on. Eventually the car was moving backwards. I was worried they would end up past the sidewalk and on the street. At least there wasn't a concrete block to scrape the bumper.

I've been dealing with an impending death in the family for the past few days, and decided to work on the car to take my mind off things. Not knowing if I'd need to be able to drive out of town at a moment's notice, I started with the simple stuff.
I fixed the aim on my ES300 passenger side fog light, which has been aiming hilariously low ever since the retrofit (lazy). I also decided to pull out the HID bulbs, because I thought the color temp was too high. As it turns out, they were VERY high:
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171001/05f5b527eb1197cb0e78bb5e35da538f.jpg
They're definitely not 8000k, probably more like 6000k, but either way the light output was utter garbage. I put in a pair of Philips 85122s I had laying around from the Mazda days. The aFe airbox made clearance on the driver side less than enjoyable.
I also finished my spring install.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171001/767c735c3685536c04f4a8e7f53dc08f.jpg
I rented Chinese Death Traps, and wore my old lacrosse helmet. Compressed springs scare the shit out of me (looking at you, Peter).
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171001/07cc16d4f1bcf5a34437c9ee7a618723.jpg
Front setup is now: Koni Yellows set to about 3, H&R Sport springs, TC Kline camber plates, and E36 (non-M) upper perches as directed by TCK. I'm also sitting on a pair of adjustable rear lower control arms I likely won't be able to install myself, because Canada.

M3 seats in.
Cross threaded a bolt on passenger side. So I learned how to use a tap and die kit. Didn't know those things existed.
So far, I'm not as impressed with m3 seats. I remember sitting in them before and thinking they fit me perfectly.
One unexpected bonus is they go down lower, so I have at least 1/2" extra room for my helmet.

hey, good for you for being super cautious!! happy to see that.
i just did a koni yellow install in the Touring and tried out my new HF compressors, which turned out to not really fit the front springs at all. so i got out my CDTs, and came up with a 'safety lock' for them so they couldn't release from the springs. needless to say, it worked, and has improved my confidence level with them. i'm no longer completely terrified... only mildly. ;)

Man that's disheartening... I'm about 155lbs soaking wet. I wanted M3 seats for that reason. Do yours have adjustable bolsters? That would make a big difference I would think...

I spent the last week or two getting mine running. I bought it wrecked and it seemed to need most of the front end replaced. I removed the rad support and the entire cooling system. It had 118K miles, so I figure I might as well replace it with new components. I basically bought everything mishimoto makes and installed it. I couldn't figure out how to make their fan shroud work with the factory wiring. I suppose you just have to splice the wires before the factory control box, but then I read that it's prone to failure so I just put the factory fan back in, and I'll figure out the mishimoto fan later.
Anyways, I finally got the cooling system put back together, filled, and bled. I let it sit for a half hour or 45 min and it stayed cool and didn't leak, so high five! It just needs the rad support and all the plastic stuff that bolts to it now.
I'm trying to figure out if I want to spend $250 on a junk yard hood or trick my wife into thinking a carbon fiber hood is a necessity. What's the consensus on that? I figure I might as well upgrade while I'm at it, but I don't know if it's a worthwhile upgrade or not.
I also discovered that the mishimoto parts fit really well if you install them correctly. The lower rad hose doesn't fit AT ALL if it's in backwards. the temp sensor sticks into the fan, the rad sits at a slant, etc. It's a real mess.

In my experience Back 2 Black only works if it isn't already faded. And it washes away with even a fine mist. Basically it'll work for a car show. I plastidip'd mine and it's holding up quite well, but it doesn't quite have that super deep black I'd like. Definitely a big improvement nonetheless.

Forgot to mention this yesterday, was pulling out of my school parking lot when a friend of mine in a diesel pickup tries to cut me off. A couple of weeks ago the same thing happened but I somehow squeezed in and he reared off. Not this time, we were joking around because I was yelling to him that it was alternate merge and he said he’d actually hit my car this time(all in good fun) but this time I tried to squeeze in and even though I didn’t feel contact it was the closest I’d ever gotten to another car in my own.
Got home and my brother pointed out the “damage”. Paint taken off of my front bumper trim, thankfully none of the actual bumper was harmed. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171007/77322f73c55416a12f90ae27df141e59.jpg

I think I diagnosed what's causing my car to be so twitchy and walk all over the damn place. Somehow both fronts are toed out. The right is toed out worse than the left, and it's (surprise surprise) pulling right.
I got the left back into "close enough" spec (using numbers I've pulled from what you guys have posted previously), but the right tie rod lockdown nut is stuck. I'm going by Firestone tomorrow to see if they'll break the nut loose and finger tighten it so I can adjust the toe at home. I don't want to pay for another professional alignment until after I do the oil pan gasket.

That's common with these cars, especially one that has seen salt. Don't be surprised if they have to use heat to free it up. If they do, your gonna want to paint that area because it will rust up real fast. Make sure you use anti-seize on the threads and you never have that problem again.
Finally got my front Koni FSD's installed, 5K mi. after I put the rears in myself. It's hard to find a decent shop here which will accept customer-supplied parts.

Let's say I sprayed the nut/treads with PB Blaster last night--does that take the torch off the table as an option? How seriously do we take the "flammable" warning on 24hr old PB?

Well, if it's anything like WD 40, you can hold a lighter in front of it and make flame thrower lol
Seriously though it's NBD if that's on there if/when they heat it up. I would imagine that they would try to break it free by conventional methods before resorting to the torch

on topic: i ordered a new Windshield Cowl and wiper arm puller. my faded/cracked one needs to be replaced stat.
the product description and reviews on ECS' website seem to indicate it's a simple direct snap-in once the old one is out. they say it comes with the tabs/clips pre-installed. can anyone confirm the DIY process? i really hope the cabin air filter does not have to come out.

The tabs and clips break off really easy and some will probably break when you remove the old one.
Don't put it on until you are absolutely sure you don't need to take it off again. The clips/tabs will probably break on the new one too if you have to take it off (this happened to me) when you are installing, the tabs on the cowl are adjustable. Make sure you have them lined up as you snap it into place

Per one of my older posts
One of the guides has directions to remove the cabin filter housing and wire harness, but I found at another place that all you have to do is remove the filter cover.

If your shifting ever starts to feel weird and notchy or just plain garbage, change your transmission fluid to ATF as BMW says but if it’s perfect then keep on motoring. I had a combo of ATF/MTL in my 6MT with more bias to ATF which was perfectly fine.

12 hours later, I finished replacing my OEM 3.07 diff with a 3.38 (purchased used on EBay for $225, including shipping). I did have to swap output flanges, but that was easy. In fact, the whole job was relatively straight-forward, but I did get pretty tired of getting up from under the car to apply and release the parking brake just to move the damned flanges to expose the screws. On that note, don’t bother farting around with screwdrivers in the brake rotors—that’s silliness.
As for results, this was the most noticeable performance mod I’ve done by far. I put over-sized tires on my car, and I paid a price in responsiveness, but the shorter gear ratio has more than made up for it. I can’t wait to get back in it tomorrow morning!

It is a bit over-zealous when launching but not as bad as I feared—limited slip may yet have a future. It’s made 2nd and even 3rd gears WAY more fun though. I’m heading out this morning to enjoy some twisties and see how it fares on the highway at cruising speed.
I’m most relieved that it’s running flawlessly. I did NOT want to have reinstall the old one. The diff supposedly only had 85,000 miles (half all the others I saw out there) but came from a wreck.
What kind of LSD do you have?

Just got back from my run and my oh my oh my... I am loving this new diff. Took it up on Interstate, and it's now running just shy of 3,100rpm at 80mph versus about 2,800rpm with the old diff (which calculates out perfectly)--not bad at all... might even be better.
First gear is shorter, but it's definitely still viable as a starting gear, the electronic nanny was fairly easy to keep at bay, and I still think I can hit 60mph in 2nd. My impression is that it makes EVERY single one of my gears better... one of these days, I'll have to swap in a set of my 17" APEX wheels with 245/40's to see what that feels like.
Needless to say, I HIGHLY recommend this mod.

Are there any new recommendations for LSD's these days? Seems like it's still impossible to get one for under a grand. That price range just seems crazy for a LSD. I can't stand the one-wheel peel and wish there was a cost-effective option.
So I bought the Hotchkis f&r anti-roll bar kit and adjustable end links from Bimmerworld... Nice stuff, albeit heavy for hollow bars. Bimmerworld was the only retailer with a good price on the Hotchkis kit; $469 plus shipping. :thumbsup
I managed to find an hour on Sunday to get the rear bar installed. Hoping to get the front bar in soon so I can get some good corner carving done before it's time to swap to snow tires.

no offense, but $1000 is a bargain for an LSD. MFactory is a sponsor here, and they make a great product. i have a 3.46 helical LSD from them and love it. well worth the investment... and in my opinion, it's worth doing before a lot of other mods.

FWIW I'm a former Mustang owner. Torsen was a popular LSD with the Mustang crowd, and they can be had for a LOT less than $1k (see below.) I don't understand what makes the BMW units so expensive. Torsen is widely regarded as a track-worthy product on cars putting 400+hp to the wheels, so it's not a cheap product.

That said, the cost of a new LSD makes a complete M3 rear subframe swap seem like a great deal. I did a little snooping on eBay and it seems like complete assemblies (with LSD's) can be had for ~$800. Anyone here done this? -Probably a stupid question. I'll do a search...

That said, the cost of a new LSD makes a complete M3 rear subframe swap seem like a great deal. I did a little snooping on eBay and it seems like complete assemblies (with LSD's) can be had for ~$800. Anyone here done this? -Probably a stupid question. I'll do a search...
you can definitely go this way, but you need the driveshaft as well - you need everything from the rear end, actually - brake rotor to brake rotor. plus, once M3 diffs get up past 80K miles, they usually need a rebuild.
way less work to do the MFactory diff. time is money.

Isn’t the M3 also a 3.64? That alone would be a turn-off for me. 1st gear is already short with a 3.46, I imagine a 3.64 would essentially negate 1st altogether. I’m thinking 3.38 MFactory for myself.

yep, 3.64.
i went with the 3.46 and i think it's great... 1st/2nd/3rd gear is much better, and the revs in 6th are at 2950rpm at 75mph.

The M3 has different gearing in 1, 2, 3, and 6 making it more livable with its 3.62 diff. But it’s really most dramatic in 1st where it’s longer so the engine power doesn’t just spin you to redline at 2MPH “ground speed”. [emoji23]

Alignment this morning. I’m dragging my feet on swapping in the non-rusty subframe. Whenever I do that I’ll put in the adjustable lower control arms I have laying around, so I can finally get the rear camber into spec. The lady was very intimidated by my asking about camber and castor adjustments, so she made the highlighted note on my paperwork below.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171018/da83b41898aa77b24104254c41616f48.jpg
Luckily the tech doing the work has a tracked 370z, so he just laughed it off. On the way home, this guy gave me a thumbs up. I reciprocated.

My local Firestone rep had no problem with my requested custom alignment settings. He knew what I was talking about and had me write down the settings that he should input into the system. Super easy.
He actually went above and beyond to order a specific set of tires, even as going as far as getting them from TireRack's warehouse the same day for me. Rockstars.

drive shaft support bearing, guibo, RTABs, front control arms, 4 tires, alignment, removed window tint, installed fog lamps and proper connectors, cleaned throttle body, iac valve and replaced the vac caps on the back of the manifold, as well as the vac line to the fpr. Anyway, it's 07/2001 facelift in TiAg like my last ZHP. [emoji4] Owned by the same family since new. It's somewhat neglected given the low miles and fact that the owner knows nothing about cars.
Should be a fun project, can't wait to start refreshing this beast. Everything is original on the car, just how I like it. Original paint apart from the front bumper and lower right skirt for which I have before/after pics.
It will be 3 long weeks until we reunite in Deutschland.

But it is a desirable color, and the sales brochure for the E39 showed it in TiAg. That's the main reason I looked for mine ('03 530i TiAg/black with sports pkg). Of course the M came in some special colors, too.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that. It's a very desirable option that I think US market didn't get.
That being said, this must be the lowest optioned e39 M5 I came across.
Standard equipment is good as it is, but doesn't even have rear parking sensor and I will be missing some stuff like double glazed windows, rear sunshades.. that my Le mans blue M5 had. I will try to retrofit some stuff though. :p

True, I just said that cause I met few e39 guys in Germany who dislike this color as it is too "common" for them and I read similar comments on M5board.
For me, it can be any color but black. My top 3 picks would be Le Mans, Estoril and TiAg.
E39 M5 in TiAg with 16k miles went for $50,100 on BaT!
530i Sport in TiAg on black is a great combo.:thumbup

Actually... After repeated, more controlled approaches to the limit, my rev limiter is kicking in at EXACTLY 60mph. The speed dropped quickly enough when it happened initially that I thought it was only 55mph. ELCID: Have you tried a controlled approach to the limit, or is your car's rev limiter modified from the original programming (e.g., "Sharked")? Seems like a pretty big difference... I wonder if a more rapid approach to the limit affects the observed mph limit (the clutch is NOT slipping)?
On a separate note, I wire-brushed my wheel hubs and wheels, applied rust converter to the hubs, and put a very thin coat of anti-seize on all the contact areas. My 8-year old helped me. : )

Okay, so after yet more testing, while a slow approach to the limit results in the rev limiter kicking in at 60mph, a rapid (i.e., typical) approach definitely results in the rev limiter kicking in between 50 and 55 mph. Without any apparent clutch slippage, there’s a lag between rpm and mph under rapid acceleration that I do not understand.

Cute! Get ‘me interested early.
To your question above, I have not done much investigation and it’s just my gut on when I need to shift based on Redline (not limiter). It’s also a bit hard to tell b/c I have an M cluster in my ZHP. Also note my speedometer has been coded to be more accurate.
Reasoned1
10-23-2017, 03:14 AM
I don’t think speedo accuracy is relevant. The surprising thing to me is that I’m seeing different speeds at what I think is the same RPM, depending on how rapidly I approach the limit. Oh well, life goes on... have a great day!

Well, not something I did, but something my dad did...
cut to the chase I don’t live with my dad anymore, and he mentioned cleaning out the garage recently to throw all the old furniture in a big dumpster. I went to his house today to grab my old air intake for my brother when I saw it literally peaking out of the top of the dumpster. Went over and hopped it and turns out he threw out ALL of my ZHP parts that were organized in storage containers. So they all sat outside for the past few days in the open dumpster while we had the most rain all year, and almost everything is ruined.
Things that got thrown away:
- 2 sets of kidney grilles
- OEM muffler
- 2 sets of clear corners with matching sets of the side lights
- OEM tail lights
- 3 Shift Knobs
- OEM dash
- 2 sets of lug bolts
- TiAg rattle cans and touch up paint
- OEM air filter
And that’s just what I’ve managed to find in a dumpster that’s 18(?)ft long https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171025/c7dbef6424d346d1f0da4520f20ca509.jpg

Took apart the Wizgear magnetic ball joint, drilled a new hole in the Panavise bracket, and turned it into a flush-mount. The ball joint on mine never secured very tightly, and it was really wobbly. While I was in there I repaired a broken tab on the cube trim above the radio, which caused the left side to pop out every time there was a bump in the road. It’s still not perfect, but it’s significantly better.

While I was in there I repaired a broken tab on the cube trim above the radio, which caused the left side to pop out every time there was a bump in the road. It’s still not perfect, but it’s significantly better.
That tab always seems to break... I shaved down the metal prong on mine so it wouldn't grip as tightly... It still holds good and much easier to remove without breaking

Good Deal. Where did you have the work done?
Installed a 4.5 LCM, custom set-up for me by Shawn, the seller.
Thanks to his steadfast support it's running fine and I'm happy to have-
Quintuple-blink
Euro-style hazards
Euro-style wide-range brake force lighting
Thanks, nextelbuddy!

Congrats! I want to do this eventually. Was it just plug and play pretty much beyond Nextel coding in your VIN?
AFAIK there was no Nextel coding involved, although Shawn may have done some of this pre-sale and I lost track of it.
I used PASoft for everything I did at this end.
Shawn sold me a 4.5 LCM custom-coded to my requirements so it could plug-and-play. It picked up my mileage from the fact that it had been set to 0000 before going into my car. Shawn coded in my VIN and the custom details mentioned above.
Turned out there was more to it than that. When I powered up I had a slew of error lights on my dash that I couldn't turn off.
At this point I was advised to basically set the 'new' LCM to match my original LCM on the light coding page (here's mine):
31311
Once this was done all my error lights went out. Thanks, Shawn!
Coincidentally or not, all my work in PASoft at this time pointed to trouble with my adaptive headlight system. I am still troubleshooting this, but it most likely is not related to the work we're discussing here.
Hope this helps.

Since I had the car in the air to install the TSE3, I went ahead and installed the BavAuto Viton oil filter housing gasket. While it looked gross beneath/ behind it, the gasket seemed okay, but the it was the one leak noted on the PPI. Once I get the alcantara repaired, I'll have addressed everything noted in the PPI (plus some things they didn't, like the missing fog light connectors and housings). I also took ample pictures in case there weren't any decent DIY's with pictures still thanks to PB if anyone's interested.

I’m not even ashamed to admit I pulled the trigger at full price from Jegs (no sales tax or shipping), using a left over gift certificate and taking advantage of the current rebate. It’s twice as much as I have ever paid for exhaust, but overall, totally worth it. I’m a stickler for good sounding exhaust with the right volume (aggressive, but still relatively mild until you mash the loud pedal) that doesn’t drone.
My car sounded GOOD before (PO(s) has removed the resonator and first muffler). My wife would make fun of me because I’d stand on the front porch or in the garage to hear her pull away when she’d drive it, because it just sounded so good. The downside was that it had the worst drone I’d ever heard. So bad, that I refused to drive it on the interstate. The drone was just too uncomfortable.
To put that into perspective, I come from mustangs. I had a 2012 GT that I, more than once, tried to use my volume knob on my radio to “turn my exhaust down” while driving to work in the morning after late hours at work the night before. I have a ‘68 mustang that had headers bolted directly into flowmasters under the driver seat that I decided was annoyingly loud, but wasn’t an immediate issue and left it that way for several years.
My first thought was just get the local shop to take care of it, but they couldn’t guarantee no drone unless I had all the original parts, and just figured the TSE3 was an easier route. I looked around for used for a short time, but honestly didn’t find much and didn’t look hard. I could have waited, but I want to drive this thing more until it’s too cold for the tires.

Oh absolutely. That’s a steal! I just didn’t afford myself the luxury of time to scout forums and eBay for a reasonably priced used catback since I wanted to drive the thing before it gets too cold, and the drone was just unbearable on the highway for me.

same here, but on the ZHP... enough so that i swapped a non-washer-jet reservoir into the Touring already, and had some non-washer-jet filler panels (that go under the headlights) painted. :) will eliminate the hoses and install the filler panels when the engine is out (replacing the headlights with the ZHP headlights anyway).
good riddance to a fairly useless system - if *i* can't get any use out of it in the climate i live in, then it's a useless system. ;)

Is that an AUX cable wrapped around the mount? Where is the cable plugged into?
Guise get a $20 Bluetooth receiver connected to your AUX in and hide it in your glove box with power so you can remove the cable. Your phone will auto connect once you unlock the car or once you open a door if it’s already unlocked and be ready to audio stream once you get going. [emoji1417][emoji1417]

Yep. I fed from the back of the head unit behind the dash to the glovebox where’s a mounting plate/female 3.5mm jack. The aux cable goes through the gap on the side of the glovebox door. I originally had it mounted in the back of the storage bin, but the cable was always in the way when shifting.

I have an AUX port in the back of my storage tray and I'm using a retractable aux cord. It works but it has never been my favorite solution. Might try to install a bluetooth receiver like Trevor did.

I got to replacing the boot emblem. Turns out I got the replacement for the hood. The tooth floss idea was a bust. I looked shady as hell trying to maneuver the floss near the trunk area out in the street. It was slightly drizzling, so I had my hood on. Some pick-up truck stopped nearby, and started moving before we made eye contact. Prying tool is the way to go.
I cleaned up the area under the emblem a bit and put a bit of wax under there. The dirt on the edges didn't come off. I'll be in for round 2. Old grommets look like they'll be good to reuse.

I know this is from the shitty shop the sleazy dealer I bought my car from used to do brakes right before I bought the car.
