Replaced ebrake shoes, springs, clasps, adjusters, everything except the cables on both sides and adjusted it all so it works well. Second time I've done this job on an e46 and actually did it right the first time. Original shoes were toast after 147k and despite adjustment it wouldn't hold on my steep driveway.

No problemo!

Got the parts from FCP by putting together my own package with all of the parts vs. the OEM package and saved over $30. When you go to FCP you'll see the e-brake rebuild kit for $130, and you can put this kit together yourself with different parts for $91.

Meyle Shoes (https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-parking-brake-shoe-set-34416761292)
2 OEM expanding locks (https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-expanding-lock-e39-e46-e53-e60-34416851439)
2 OEM adjustment screws (https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-parking-brake-cable-adjustment-screw-34416851437)
1 ATE hardware kit (https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-parking-brake-hardware-kit-34410410825)

Total is $91 before shipping, and will be more if you choose to pay for the quicker FCP shipping. The other time I did this, I got the original BMW kit from ECS and paid the $130 (I didn't know about FCP yet!). I see/experience no difference in these parts than the original parts at all.

Here are the DIY's I followed:

Rebuild DIY: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQF6lUmDvOA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQF6lUmDvOA

Adjustment DIY: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VI5r6I3_U_k

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VI5r6I3_U_k

The mistake I made the first time I did this on my 325Ci is that I assumed I could just ballpark the adjustment. Not so. Following the second video above leads to perfect adjustment the first time and you won't have to mess with it again.

Obviously, if you're rebuilding your ebrake, you should know how to remove your calipers/rotors and how to jack up the car safely.

Tips:
- put the assembly together at the top (small spring, screw adjuster) FIRST, then put it around the hub/assembly and stretch down the big screw. Once I figured this out, it took minutes to get the assemblies installed rather than struggling with that stupid small spring.
- when you remove your old assembly, leave it intact and on the ground so you can see the exact orientation of the shoes and parts.
- you don't NEED all of the parts listed above, but with high mileage everything is extremely rusty and corroded, so for a few extra dollars, you have an entirely new system.
- get a deep 10mm socket to adjust the cable screws inside the car.
- definitely use a flashlight so you can see through the lug hole to the adjustment screw once you're buttoning everything up.
- if you have studs like I do, you will have to take one stud out in order to get proper adjustment completed.

Good luck!

Doing a detail on the 325Ci before it leaves at the end of the month. It's going back to Florida to my dad. It's been fun having two e46s.

Trying to do a single stage polish but keep getting micro marring. I'll figure it out. So far washed, clay, iron-x, and dr colorchip.

Gloss grilles from Amazon came in. I'll put them on tomorrow.

One thing I found really useful on my X3's Style 205s was to dedicate a microfiber to permanent wheel duty, and basically floss between the parallel spokes. It's a technique I transferred to the 135Ms with good results when I still had them on.

You're right. I messed up. Fixed the link now.

My buddy who was cleaning his winter wheels (style 343 reps I believe) yesterday was doing something similar. He was using discarded socks to clean in-between the spokes. I might do that next time.

I finally got around to replacing the rear tires on my car. It's been sitting with a flat for almost 3 months. I had to have all the TPMS sensor removed and all 4 wheels rebalanced because Hella discontinued my TPMS system and I can't find replacement sensors anywhere. Very bummed about that because it was a great system that monitored wheel temperature too.

Also found out during alignment that one of my trailing arms is bent. WTF? I never remember hitting anything that would of bent it...

I was doing exactly that a few weeks ago when I was wiring up my AEs the proper way. You can gain a lot more working space if you just disconnect the glovebox light harness and get the glovebox completely out of the way.

It was. But that was the piece I was trying to wire a rocker switch to except the depth of the switch with connectors didn't seem to work with the space in there so I decided to wire the switch into the sunglass holder. Now that the wires are through a hole I drilled I'll find a way to mount the switch to the side of the interior sunglass left side wall.

At least I have a switch to change angel eyes to amber or white! Yesterday I took the time to rewire and splice wires in to a custom relay/wire harness with soldering, heat shrink tubing, and braided wire loom.

I barely had enough time to open the box, much less clean them up and thoroughly inspect. They appear to be Carbon, and the glass is free of browning. There's one spot of peeling clear coat (irrelevant as I'm going to paint), but I didn't find any rust/paint bubbling. All of the rock chips feel very shallow, and should be clean enough to make repainting a pretty straightforward task.

It's actually rubber. lol
I wanted to try it because I was started to feel about my shift knob the way I felt about my alcantara interior when I still had it. I was started to get really paranoid about wear on the leather shift knob. The F80 M3 shift knob is less than 2 years old but already has that terrible "matte" patina on it that I oh so hate. It was expensive as hell... $160 + shipping.

I thought the motorsport knob was plastic, which is why I borrowed it from Derek. I was really surprised to find that it's rubber. It feels pretty nice to shift with, but I just know that being rubber, it's going to wear pretty badly as well. Oh well...

Not Spenser, but I have the BMW performance pedals as well as the ///M dead pedal. They look cool - that's all I can say about them.

What mats do you have? I've found that my BMW all weather mats don't *quite* fit properly with the M3 dead pedal and it sort of curls up along the dead pedal. I can sometimes tuck it below the metal bit, but it doesn't seem to stay for long.

Factory carpet mats, but I want some WeatherTechs (had them in every car other than my Volvo). I might pull my old man's WT mats to see if the front lip is too thick or not.

yesterday a buddy came over and helped install the Dinan intake and GAS Gold DISA. i had bought the DISA back from the guy who purchased my salvaged ZHP coupe. the DISA was still in perfect condition.

sucks that i had to buy it back in the first place, but i only paid $155 shipped versus $450 for a new one.

oh and i did not install the down tube on the intake that feeds from the brake duct. that's a lot of work for what i think are probably minuscule gains. i wonder if there's any dyno difference between the intake with/without the down tube installed. can anyone else comment on this?

as-is, the Dinan intake sounds great compared to the stock airbox. and butt dyno feels improved but who knows. could be the new DISA helping as well above 4k RPMs.

Not on my car, but on a friends' 2008 Ford Focus... right rear wheel bearing was shot, just like on the black Touring. Unlike the black Touring though, I did the entire job in 3hrs. Weird design... the bearing is pressed into the drum, which then slips over a spindle that is bolted to the hub assembly.

I love this tool! (please disregard the state of my garage and workbench... i've got too many projects on the go. sigh.)

ordered a front license plate delete strip, new center console and new cupholders from FCP Euro.

i also realized that the brand new Shark Injector i bought is from ECS tuning and is for a 330i. my understanding is that Turner sells an alternate version specifically for the ZHP. can anyone confirm that only Turner sells the correct ZHP version. is the ECS version the same or different?

just got off the phone with a rep from TMS and he stated there is no "ZHP specific" Shark. the software file is the same for all 330i's (ZHP or not) post-2003.

i asked about that and he said they created a separate option only because so many ZHP owners were calling in asking for a "ZHP specific" file. the actual software file is the same. which i said is confusing and he agreed. it really should state "ALL FILES ARE SAME FOR 2003+ 330i CARS INCLUDING ZHP" to avoid the confusion...

That seems like misleading advertising if they tried to make it look like there is different software for the ZHP. There's also that little box about them saying the ZHP limit for manual transmissions is 6920 RPM.

Though it's not the first time I saw something misleading with their product descriptions.

The horsepower gains they claim for the ZHP are bullshit.

If you look at the DYNO charts for the regular 330i v ZHP, the 330i gains (which include an "intake") are:

HP: 193.5 ---> 201.6
TQ: 198.5 ---> 205.3

While the ZHP gains advertised are:

HP: 190.4 ---> 204.5
TQ: 186.3 ---> 197.7

What was the impact wrench needed for on a strut bar install?

One of the strut mount studs managed to break itself loose at some point, so it was free spinning in the strut mount, and couldn't be taken out with hand tools. The guys at the shop managed to get it out and later tightened after install, using an impact wrench.

Changed the oil and the spark plugs over the weekend. Engine is smooth!! Played doctor and took an oil sample. Going to send it off to Blackstone Labs for an analysis. Differential and transmission fluids still need to be changed but I may wait until I actually hit 180,000mi which should be right around the wedding.

Finished my auto transmission service this weekend. Three weeks ago I did the initial drain and refill with Redline D4, got about 3.5 quarts of fresh fluid in. Saturday I drained the fluid, dropped the pan, and replaced the filter, gasket, pan bolts, drain and fill plug with OEM parts. This time I got about 6.5 quarts back in using the level the car and 2 step fill cold/fill warm method. Pan and valve body were fairly clean for 107,000 miles. It was changed out 70,000 by the previous owner at a small Indy shop, but I cannot verify if the pan was dropped and the filter was changed as they were both OEM. I drove it home 80 miles from my parents and it shifts really smooth both up and down and in drive and sport modes.

I have been doing some research and cannot find much information about drain interval with the Redline D4. I am thinking it should be good for 30,000 - 50,000 driving style depending? Anyone else running D4 and have any recommendations as to drain intervals?

Now onto the X3 for transmission and differential fluid services next weekend. It's fun having two BMWs at or just over 100,000 miles.

Actually that's a great thought. I've never thought to polish it. I dress mine with Adam's VRT. https://www.amazon.com/Adams-Polishes-SPRVRT-VRT-16oz/dp/B001QVG7MC

I would be scared to polish it since I really don't know what the finish is made out of. The Adam's VRP will last a decent amount of time before I will need to reapply. But now you've got me thinking about some light polishing!

Should have added that VRP goes on the trim and the tires as well.

Also, the process was this:
- wheels/tires with sonax and chemical guys APC for the tires/wheel wells
- wash with chemical guys soap (can't remember flavor)
- decontaminate with mckees iron remover
- clay
- wash again
- dry
- remove kidney grilles, license plates, and front side indicators
- tape off trim/black areas
- m105 with a few pads -- tried orange, yellow, and microfiber. All of this is on my Flex 3401 VRG.
- Settled on m105 with orange pads
- then m205 with black pads and white pads for worse areas
- then I discovered the magic of Sonax Perfect Finish, and the process went like this:
- 2 passes of m105 with orange
- 2 passes of sonax with white
- once polishing was done, I topped it with Sonax liquid wax, then some menzerna endless shine
- took some Q-tips and removed all of the excess dust/wax/polish in all the cracks and crevices
- cleaned the glass
- installed all the crap I took off
- done!

If you've got minor imperfections then the sonax can probably take care of all of it with two passes. If your car is as bad as mine was than you'll need a compound.

Nothing to be worried about with polishing via DA polisher. You can't burn through the clearcoat.

If you've got minor imperfections then the sonax can probably take care of all of it with two passes. If your car is as bad as mine was than you'll need a compound.

Nothing to be worried about with polishing via DA polisher. You can't burn through the clearcoat.

I went with these: Front Kidney Grill Grilles for BMW E46 2002-2006 4 door 4D 3 Series Car Front Bumper Grille Gloss Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EV0VG84/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_mj8opYZ3ugfL6

I'm happy for the price. They're not high quality and will probably not last a very long time. But they were cheap, they're gloss, and they fit great.

- installed all the crap I took off
- done!

Yeah Im really curious, unfortunately I wont have access to my polisher for at least 3-4 months but if you happen to try it, please share! Also DWs sig pic is incredible. The angle, the drop, the scenery...its all perfect. Just wow

After getting my car painted and Polished and buffed to get rid of all the orange peel.. I ended up going with sonax cc36 ceramic coating and I couldn't be happier with the beating and hydrophobic properties. It's only around $79 on Amazon and was really easy to apply.

Not particularly enthused about the amount of wear on the outside edge on the front wheels. Hoping the lower PSS10 suspension will produce a more even wear pattern for track use.

Rears look just fine.

I'm really hesitant to put on a coating, maybe with the exception of the McKee's 37 SiO2 Enhanced version. The prices are a little bit crazy, and I just don't have enough confidence in my polishing abilities to put something semi-permanent on top of it. Also, I like tracking the life of whatever product I have on there then reapplying when necessary.

One thing I love is the McKee's Hydro Blue. Easiest application ever (spray on wet car, spray off with hose), and it adds a nice layer of protection for a few weeks. My process for washing will be wash, hydro blue, then a drying aid QD. Should keep the protection lasting a while.

Other option is to get the McKee's coating on there before winter.

i'm not sure why you would be hesitant to put on a coating such has a ceramic coating but not the Net Polymer shield. the ceramic coating is like an extended polymer shield option with coverage for they say 2-3 years (i think a year is more realistic).

its literally just a clear liquid wax essentially that comes in 2 layers. one is the ceramic coating which is clear and applies very easy and smooth.... the 2nd layer is the glossy shine layer.

once both are on, there is no thickness or anything. you cant even tell its there unless you wash the car where waster beads right off OR you get something like bird poop or road grime etc.. that wipes off very easily now.

now I just wash the car when its "dirty" then dry it with a water blade. in between washes if its dusty I just use a California brush OR liquid spray detailer which only adds to the hydrophobic properties even more and has more shine.

If you have a very light and gentle touch, it can work very well. I like the one with the semi-flexible, rubbery handle more than the original "California Water Blade" with the plastic handle.

My ceramic has lasted over two years with hardly any time to maintain which has been perfect. The time I have gotten back from cleaning and detailing the car is worth the price whether it be economically or your own time to install.

I don't need to clean with soap, just "running" water and a soft towel. If the car is super caked on with dirt and muck then I may use some soap to keep things more lubricated as the towel/not runs over the dirt. Most spring/summer/fall times I can just dry the car after a good rain shower and the car is clean and scratch free. Every couple months I'll just spray some Carpro Reload on my damp drying towel and just run it over the whole car. Bi annually I'll use iron X to pull solid iron deposits off the ceramic which takes more or less the same time as washing the car. Today it still beads up and I don't feel any OCD need to clean my car in any special "detailer" way that adds complexity or the water bill. A few times this summer I just sprayed waterless wash on the car to wipe away dust/dirt to no ill-effect. I love ceramic. [emoji41][emoji1417]

Does the water blade work well? I've never seen anyone use one before.

I have the blade! It's wonderful to wipe water away from large wet and clean surfaces. You obviously don't want to it over a wet dirty car. It takes me 5 swipes to do the roof which will be done in 20 seconds. I use light pressure just to hold the super flexible blade against the surface. Again, I don't worry very much because it's all ceramic coated. If I'm too aggressive it's still fine.

Well I didn't do anything TODAY, but after getting out of my car in bright sun and looking down I sure am about to do something soon.
I bought the car last year with emasculate paint, hand washed by the original owner, never put through an auto wash. About 4 months ago I started going to a Hand Wash place where I watched them hand wash it, figured it'd be fine. I had just moved in the months prior and was still in the process, and hand washing her wasn't top priority unfortunately

Remove the passenger dash and center dash trims. Remove the two screws on either side under the vents. Grab from the bottom of the vents and twist upward with some force and they should pop out.

You'll see when the vents are loose that there is a cable attached to the temp slider. Remove the clip on the red retainer part of the cable, then slide the O end off the black plastic pin and pop the cable out of its plastic retainer. It's easiest if you look up a video on YouTube how to do this to get a better visual.

The only hard part about the entire process was trying to take out my radio and vents without damaging my trim. I was very afraid to take out that trim covering these pieces because that one pin towards the steering column was pretty stuck and I didn't want to break the pin retaining plastic. I've done that twice already on different trims, so I was super careful and just left it in while working around it.

What did I do for my ZHP today (actually yesterday)? I damaged it by running over a rubber bungee cord. It made a hell of a racket. The tire went flat when the bungee cord's s-hook was pulled out of the center tread. Also discovered the temporary spare had a bent rim and that is likely causing its own slow leak issue.

A quarter panel paint job is forthcoming all because of a bungee cord laying in the highway. Look closely and you can see the trim was broken and the scratches are deeply gouged into the fender and door panel. The centrifugal force apparently stretched out the bungee and allowing the metal end to tear up the side of the car.

Am going to look into the insurance coverage. We have high deductibles so the additional $$ from the insurance company may not be all that beneficial with my wanting to have some additional areas touched up. Additionally, I may be moving to a 2 Series in the next 12 to 24 months and don't want a Carfax entry that gets misinterpreted and ends to a greater deduction in buyers eyes than is reasonable as the damage is strictly superficial (requiring painting but no body or frame work).

I appreciate the concerns and comments. It has value as a mental re-set for this old guy as it illustrates you have to be prepared for Murphy to strike at any time. Interestingly, Murphy's Law is attributed to testing by Dr. Stapp, the guy who rode the rocket sled doing studies later used in ejection seats, space capsule design, etc. Here is the link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murphy%27s_law

The best way would be to remove the grille. ecrabb's guide is quite good: http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?16673-DIY-M-Tech-II-Coupe-Bumper-Removal-Grille-Refresh-doityourself

If you're lazy like me, first wash the grille and let it dry. Next, just remove the license plate bracket, tape off the bumper surrounding the grille using painter's tape, and stuff newspaper behind the grille to prevent overspray by sliding it down through the engine bay in front of the radiator. Then just spray an even coat of paint, making sure to go at angles so that all surfaces are covered by the paint i.e. left-right, up-down and/or diagonal. Let it dry and repeat the process at least once more.

That's done to theoretically provide additional airflow to the airbox. The same setup is used on the Dinan CAI. I am skeptical as to the actual gains provided by the extra tube. I suspect that air is 1) hot and 2) dirty

Hope I can change time again.

Fitted stock mirrors to Wobz. It's the first time I've seen it with stock mirrors... they're not that bad, actually. I can get used to them, but they're not permanent. Hopefully I'll have my M3 mirrors back from repair in 2-3 weeks. :)

I think the sedan mirrors look better than the coupe mirrors, but obviously M3 ftw. Oh and that's quite the bug you caught on the lens there.

I feel I have better visibility with my M3 mirrors since they're wider, and wider is better for me personally. Then again, my M3 mirrors have aspherical glass, so that helps - but the physical width of the glass is what I'm having a hard time with.

Called a local detail shop today about bringing my ZHP in tomorrow, said it'd be $175 for the whole thing, does that sound right? I almost figured it would be more expensive. I've seen the work that they've done on my dad's CLS 500 and that came out pretty great on black paint, but I don't think I really got a good look at it and that was a year ago.
I've been advised from my brother not to take it to the BMW dealership because the service they do offer doesn't include paint correction and that they don't really pay attention to the cleanliness of their wash tools...

It's probably a wash, single pass polish & hopefully a wax or sealant & interior vacuum. $175 doesn't get you much here in the Washington DC area - perhaps your pricing there is better!

received my Euro 4.5 LCM from ebay. paid $109 with $7 shipping.

already has triple blink enabled so I changed it to 5 blinks. already has the euro double flash hazard enabled as well.

I noticed in NCS Expert and PA SOft that even though this is a DYN Xenon LCM.. it has options to support DYN Xenon Adjustable self level headlights so i may take a gamble on a face plate that has the knob and see if it works with that option enabled. it actually had both options in NCS... NON Xenon manual adjust and Xenon manual adjust.
