Wow, you all have been busy! Way behind on this thread. Nice job on the VANOS Keith, and best wishes for your father-in-law. Hope things work out for your car Terra.
Yesterday, hung out with William, Jon, an E46f.c vert friend name John, and Williams' friend Jeff. Did some car stuff, fixing William's bumper, brake bleed, William did John's all-auto-up fix/coding, and closed in on my wiper fluid leak. Then, beers n burgers. Good day.
Jeff/John checking out his M3 vert.

Oh, forgot the best part! William's new bumper mod! Definitely should go in the cheap mod thread. :)

LOL. Just a temporary fix to help hold a piece on.

I swapped out my Neg. battery cable today with a new one Nike001 sourced me from BMW on the cheap. (Employee discount FTW!!!)

I had a pretty good day. Took apart the subframes along with the engine and tranny from the 02 330xi sitting at my house waiting to be parted.

I got a little innovated since I couldn't physically pull the engine and tranny out myself. Thanks to Chad's engine hoist :)

Wow, she looks amazing for 215k! The front end of my 120k ZHP has been pitted up really bad for a good 40k (3'ish years), have you had yours refinished? Or does it magically not show up in pictures (mine does that too). My headlights look terrible...
Doesn't show up in pictures. But the front end needs a respray. I'm fine with that though - with the mileage I didn't expect showroom condition when I bought it. The chips and road rash are pretty even, so the front looks decent when you look 2 feet away from the car. My headlight lenses have like 60k on them.
das boots
04-07-2013, 05:40 PM
Chips and road rash comes with the territory on the lower front intake bumper area. But it would be a plus to do a resand and repaint of the bumper area.
On Thursday, I "jfoj'd it!"
- New intake boots (upper/lower)
- Clean throttle body
- Clean ICV
- New DISA
What a difference it made. Not only can I pass inspection now, but my car feels more responsive, and idles sooooo smoothly.
In other news:
I've successfully gotten BMW DIS installed on a laptop. INPA, EDIABAS, NCSExpert, and all the other BMW software that the whole INPA package comes with all seem to be working. My cable will be coming in the mail soon so I can start programming.
All I can say is, the software BMW has is incredibly powerful. Let me put it this way: you can set off your airbags with it if you really wanted to. The entirety of the software capabilities is not well-documented, but it can do a lot. There's a good reason why they created BMW DIS - to keep technicians from screwing up. The fact that they created a GUI for their GUI says something about its capabilities.
Do not, under any circumstances, touch NCSExpert. Unless you were trained by BMW to use it, you can and will brick your ECU or other modules if you mess it up. NCSExpert directly pulls the exact files out of ROM, allows you to edit them directly, then writes them back in. This is what DIS is for - it will talk directly with NCSExpert to write the proper files, and more importantly, do it correctly. The code to do all of these things is already written for you. All you need to do is click a few buttons under DIS.

Had NASA So. Cal weigh my car today their Longagre scale, in between all the racers who are required to get weighed. Came in at 3446 lbs. Seemed kind of porky then remembered that includes me and a 3/4 tank of fuel! Suppose I weigh 200# with my clothes, shoes, floppy hat, and helmet--that makes the car 3246. Had on 4 lightweight wheels (save 10 lb each vs. stock) and lighter springs (save 2.5 lb each?) for approximate 50# weight savings. So 3446 - 200 + 50 = 3296. Is that close to the spec weight for an E46 ZHP sedan, and does the spec weight include a full tank of gas? The car also has around 8 lbs of reinforcement plates, zip ties, air scoop, stickers, GoPro camera, and the AFe intake must be 2 or 3 lbs more than stock.
The scale weighed each tire but the guy told me the corner weight measurement wouldn't be useful because the ground was slightly sloped.

I have one of those on my bumper! It's holding a broken pork chop to the bumper cover, so you can't see it unless you're looking at the bottom of the bumper. I have awarded myself the rank of Junior Assistant Zip-Tie Engineer!

When I weighed mine, it was 3310lbs with half tank of gas, no spare, everything emptied out of the car. That was with stock wheels as well. Front/rear weight distro was near perfect 49.*/50.* weight distribution. (Don't remember exact numbers)
Hope that helps. Sounds like it's right on par to me.

I took my new metal water pump pulley from BavAuto off. Car was making a ticking sound and I noticed the pulley was wobbling! When I got it off it was clearly unbalanced. So now I think it effed up my wp cause there's a tiny bit of play in it and it's only 30k old. Nothing awful, but I'm sure it's life was severely shortened.
Shoulda just gotten the fancy ECS one. :-/

It looks like the belt may have been riding off the pulley by a rib or more. See the wear on the outside - mostly from the Noon position - 7 position

This is what I measured when I used the truck scale ages ago with my heavy 17" M5 replica winters. This scale is probably not accurate in actual weight since it measures trucks probably ten times my weight so a bit off isn't important. But it does give relativity to how balanced the car is:

Driving North this morning in Central California, there were very high winds. I was doing about 80-85, dark outside... All of a sudden a giant (4' diameter or so) tumbleweed blew into my lane... I swerved hard to the left but still clipped it pretty good. No damages to the rental car... But damn, it scared the crap outta me!

My son , young Brett, has been on the ball today. All spring sports at his high school sold mulch bags, collectively had 3000 bags to deliver, Brett and his crew of 7 personally delivered 550 bags. I just drove the truck borrowed from a friend with a trailer tagging behind that we could carry as many as 75 bags at a time. Then home and he washed my/his car, then his brother's car and finally his mom's x5. Inside & out on all of them, he did a fantastic job. Unfortunately (or fortunately) mom was driving her IR conv so it did not get cleaned today, we'll hit it in the morning. Meanwhile, I took the dog to the vet and played with the lawn mowers, cleaned decks and sharpened blades so we're ready to go in a couple of weeks. Also cleaned the 4-wheeler since my other unnamed son destroyed it previously when he was home from college.
Thanks for the cleaning of my car. And cmon ATV's are made to get muddy whats the fun if you keep it clean all the time.

Test fitted my style 178's on the xi today to see how I liked them.
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/04/09/dumu2u2y.jpg
I had them on my e36 for the non winter months. Thought they were 18's but turns out they are 17's, good thing I checked, and my bank account is happy about that one. :p I also ordered two sets of tires. Pilot super sports for the ZHP, and Ventus V12's for the xi. And nearly 1500 dollars later plus the extra hundred or so to mount them. This has been one expensive spring!

About $400 more.

Those would be the Broadway edition of the fortune auto. However the series 500 is on par.
And its still in the same price bracket of coilovers between $900 and $1500.
I'm not saying bc is a bad coilover for the value.
However fortune auto hands down puts more r&d into their system. I visited their facility in Richmond and was amazed at how close their coilovers are in features and specs to the higher end systems.

Sent from the HTC DNA, Williamsburg, VA and USA
Yes and yes.
I had bc on my maxima but have swapped them with tein. I also had a set of k-sports and d2 as well.
And the zhp is currently back on stock suspension because of winter and since I want to go with the Broadway edition due to the much shorter bodies being able to drop the car much lower.

I guess when I get to the point where I have to replace my coilovers with something new down the road, I may have look into Fortune Auto. All I can say is that for the price the BC Racing coilovers are very good. Until you mentioned Fortune Auto, I have never heard of them before.
Not bashing on your decision so don't take it the wrong way. A coilover system unless its a really cheap one is better then stock.

No. I went with a cheaper set of solo werks s1's. Got them for extremely cheap and read good reviews on them (they are just via simple set of ride height adjustable coilovers meant for street). Should I be disappointed with them I can always revert to my current set up which only has 10 k on it or so. I'm lowering the car and changing/removing some exterior mods for a new look.

Today I had Wobz inspected to make sure she's ready for track. Happy to find that my front rotors are just above minimum spec, meaning I can wait until the 2nd track day to replace. Everything else looked solid! Had a friend clean the sheezle out of the area directly below my engine with brake cleaner. Couldn't breathe for 10 minutes after but it was worth it; it is now squeaky clean.

Holy crap, I finally get to make an actual update in this thread! Tonight I installed my Coby wheel and boots. I left the car sitting without the wheel on (and therefore battery disconnected to prevent airbag light), but I put the wheel on tonight so I could plug the battery back in and take her for a quick drive around town...
She was running really rough when I first started her, but she smoothed out in a couple minutes and after about 8 miles of city cruising, she was purring nicely and so enjoyable...
Damn I missed my car... Oh, and the Coby Wheel products are amazing looking... Pics to come tomorrow... :thumbsup

Akebono pads & new rotors up front. Same was done in the rear (pardon the expression) about 8k miles ago. My rear wheels have been squeaky-clean ever since, with the fronts getting filthy quickly from the stock pads. Really looking forward to clean wheels at both ends now, without back-breaking labor to get them clean when I got sick of looking at them dirty. New belts. Was ready to do a cooling system refresh (61k miles) but my mechanic (a VERY well-respected local indy who drives an E46 M3 & 323 himself) pressure-tested the expansion tank and said it's fine, so I'll hold off for now.

Did my first oil change since acquiring my car. Made my own low profile ramps out of 2 pieces of 2x10x12'. Had to go to 3 tool shops to find a 36mm socket!
Discovered two things while under the car. One (the bad), the cover plate for the drain plug is missing. Two (the good), the drain plug is an aftermarket magnetic plug.

I wouldn't consider the drain plug cover plate a bad thing considering quite a few of us here don't have one either. Pretty sure most out cars never came with one.

Drain plug cover was standard on early pre-facelift e46s, started to disappear in 2001, they were not standard equipment by the time the ZHPs debuted. If you want one, order one for a 323/328 e46, it's not even shown on the diagram for our 330s.

Yeah, my floor jack is not low profile so I can't get it under the jacking point unless the front wheels are already elevated (especially since I use Reverse Logic's jack stand adapters - little aluminum blocks that fit perfectly into the jack point pocket).
With this design, I can drive the car up a couple of levels and then get the jack in there (if I'm doing something where I need to get the wheel off), or I can drive it to the top and do the oil change without messing around with a jack and jackstands.
Of course, a 2x10 is more like 1.5" x 9.25", so I'm only getting 6" of lift. Its enough room to get your head in there and pull the drainplug, but not much more than that. For more involved work, I'll need to add more levels, or just put the thing up on jack stands. But for oil changes twice a year, these ramps make it quick and easy and are a hell of a lot cheaper than race ramps. :)

My new summer tires arrived today! Bridgestone Potenza S04 Pole Positions replacing some very worn RE050A Pole Positions. Rear only. Fronts have plenty of tread.
I'll have them mounted and balanced on Saturday, swap off my winters for my summer rubber, and be ready for AutoX school the following Saturday!

Well got my radiator all back together. Aaaaaand then found out I shoulda replaced my expansion tank(which I replaced 30k miles ago) as well. O-rings seem to be leaking at both bottom holes, and one base is cracked. I really don't like the E46 expansion tank design. New tank ordered, should be here tomorrow.

Occupancy sensor bypass installed and polished up my headlights with a drill attachment and PlastX, then sealed them with headlight lens sealer. Makes quite the difference on the age of your car! You can get this attachment from the 3M Headlight Restoration Kit. It comes with a foam pad that you can put PlastX on and buff up plastic.
No errors from the sensor bypass. When I had passengers in the seat, the light would turn on/off, so I had no actual way of knowing if the airbag was going to function properly or not. I thought this was dangerous, so I used a bypass module that activates it all the time until I can get the fix done properly.
Just looking out for my friends and family
In other news, I have fully installed BMW DIS v51, SSS Progman v32, EDIABAS, INPA, CarSoft, BMW Scanner 1.4.0, the diagnostic head emulator, and the most recent E46 daten files on my sister's old laptop. It's literally now just a BMW coding machine. If only I can figure out a way to remove the stickers she put all over it...
Can't wait to get my cable so I can start doing some programming and finally update my DME! I need a separate cable for BMW Scanner 1.4.0, but I really don't care too much about it since DIS and SSS can do the same things.

Plopped in some chrome-plated turn signal bulbs. No more ugly egg-yolk color! The front of my car is now nice and clear.
Replacing them is a bit tricky on the facelift.
Driver's side:
- Remove cover for xenon lamps
- Look to the right in a very tiny corner, you'll see an electrical plug. Don't disconnect it. Facing the car, twist the electrical connector to the right. You'll hear feel it when it fully pops into about a 45 degree angle.
- Fenangle it out of the car, pop out turn signal wedge bulb, put new one in
- Fenangle it back in. There's not really a trick to it, just move the wires out of the way as best you can and get it on in there. Twist the bulb holder until you feel it seat, then turn it to the left until the electrical connector is vertical
Passenger's side:
- Remove the one 10mm bolt for the washer fluid tank
- Lift the washer fluid holder up as much as you can
- Remove the xenon bulb cover
- Find the turn signal electrical connector to the left of it, don't remove the connector
- Twist the connector to the left, pull it on out
- Move the washer fluid tank around so that the bulb holder slides out
- Plop in the new bulb, put it back in the socket, twist it to the right until the connector is vertical, and bolt the washer fluid tank back, and you're done!

Wow, busy day for your car... Good to hear though. As for the plugs, are they standard, single ground plugs or do they have 4 ground prongs like those stupid Bosch's... I thought I read somewhere that someone used the 4 tip plugs... I much prefer standard NGKs... Thoughts?

Well my fingers are sore after that install. Pretty much had to remove the head unit and most if the control pieces to route the wires. I still have to remove the wheel again and either fix the fitment or swap my old wheel hardware so I can get the airbag even. It currently has a bit of a gap on the left.

Those are the standard NGKs, which are 4-prong. Which is fine, you can run 100k on those without issue. You can also go with the iridium plugs (BKR6EIX) which are single prong but still retain the proper gap and heat rating. Should last even longer too since they're iridium

Need to buy the bracket to which the new e-pedal mounts to. The one I received had every clip on it busted off. Tomorrow I will hopefully get the new DME mounted and wired in. Then it becomes a matter of finishing touches like the locks, ignition barrel and the pedal harness. Can't wait to drive her again.
From a GS3, this was sent.

Thanks Charlie. Looks funny that way, doesn't it Justin? Hope it works out.
As for my car, I dremel'ed the screws underneath the rear fenders hoping that's the scrape with my 10mm spacers in the back... otherwise I'm going smaller spacers.

@ JR..........plastidip it.
Fixed brake light issue (with everyone's help) and waxed front bumper and boot lid after paint.
Also pulled the installed e90 boot off of the e90 shift knob. Need e-brake and shift boots. I want the stitching on my boots to match the stripe on the coby wheel wrap I'm gonna get. That's the goal.
John Plastidip works great and looks pretty darn close to OEM.
Took a sweater shaver to my alcantara thanks to the advise of someone on these forums mentioning it at the last ZHP Mafia meet. Can't remember who it was :( It really did the trick! It's not a perfect restore, but it looks and feels so much better than the lintbally mess it was.

I WAS going to wash it today, but I ended up going to a shopping outlet with the family.
I did though, spot a ZHP that was all riced out. Front was mainly stock but the rear had some awful aftermarket rice bumper and some god awful rims. I wasn't sure if it was a ZHP after seeing the M-tech II front but I looked for the glossy trim and saw it had it so I figured it was probably a ZHP. It was while we were driving out so I only got a few secs to look at it

Rovert
04-16-2013, 11:52 AM
The thing with the OEM Aux kit is you will need to install a ground to it...it's mentioned online in several places because when you are charging your device while playing through AUX....the deck will kick it out of aux at random times because I'm assuming power is escaping into the deck so it cancels the aux connection for protection. So if you want to play anything reliably with the OEM Aux kit, just don't charge while playing. :)

My morning classes were canceled today, so I spent some time detailing the interior of the ///M. I vacuumed every square inch of carpet, and then spot shampoo'ed any spots that didn't come clean. I also shampoo'ed the entire trunk, walls and all. For how clean my car is at any given time my trunk always looks like a bomb went off. lol

Maybe they improved the OEM design as I bought mine from the dealership when I first got my car. It was a simple plug into the back of the OEM deck and then be creative on where to put the plug. :) I know on eBay there was some simple inline plug that would make everything work fine...but I can't remember what it was called.

My cars currently in the paint booth at the paint shop. They drove the car in, and painted it. Everything was fine. They went to drive the car out of the paint booth and its like the wheels are locked up. (At least the left side are locked up and wont rotate.) Car won't budge in D or R but Revs fine. When you hit the gas, the car kinda lunges at diagonal angle without moving like one of the rear brakes in locked up. :dunno
Any thoughts??! lmao I need my car out of the booth because I miss it like crazy and my car is hogging 1 of the 2 paint booths and slowing there business down. :facepalm:eeps:rofl

That's what I feel like and the guys at the paint shop too.... since it gets HOT in those paint booths. :/
And thank you!! Most I do is use Adobe Lightroom to adjust the light balance and add a few a effects, but in Photoshop, I just do a duplicate of the primary layer and apply an Unsharp Mask at about 40% opacity to gently touch up and add slight detail to the photos.

Got some $5 white/xenon-ish LED license plate lights with built-in resistors. They actually fit the E46 perfectly, despite the heatsink on the back of them.

They're not as bright, blue, and overwhelming as the picture makes them look, they're the same brightness level as my old bulbs, just a little more modern looking :) Because of the built-in resistor, they don't stay dimly lit when the car shuts off.

and noww... I NEED some help! :help
so like worse scenario everr happened today!! lmao
Car is looking great. I had no idea you were painting it White!
It doesn't get that hot in a paint booth. I'm with Dane, stuck e-brake. Or possible corrosion has adhered the pads to the rotors. But I don't think that could stop the car from moving.
Do they come as a pair?

Oil change!
http://tcholo.net:8080/images/bmw/20130417oilChange.jpg
Thought I'd need to replace my OFHG, but upon inspection, it didn't appear to be leaking; guess my more-than-usual consumption has a different culprit . . .
Also added a oil drain plug access door / flap; undercarriage looks much better with it in place!
(And hot dang do I need to repaint my lower grille . . . :facepalm)

I need to clean my wheels, wheel barrels, and fender liners sometime soon too.
Might have a permanent garage space for the ZHP in the near future. Working on the closing for the condo we are trying to purchase. Woot!
As long as nothing goes wrong in the inspection and financing ZHP should have a place to sleep.

http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/ff401/Kayger12/20130419_150437_zpsc0c1095e.jpg
Good instructions on the GAS site. Very straightforward job.
My DISA was in very good shape at 72K miles. Vacuum pot was good, flapper was in good shape and tight, and the bell crank and pivot screw were in such good shape that it took a good amount of force to get them both out.

It was pretty easy. I put the car on ramps. Removed splash guard and center reinforcement plate. I used an 8mm socket on lower bolt and a torx socket on upper bolt. Upper portion is telescoping, so from here is a muscle game to walk the gumbo up the upper shift and remove being careful not to ding the dental teeth.
I put some blue thread lock on each bolt and reinstalled. Took about an hour.
