Soldering frayed and damaged insulation on wires within the rubber loom caused my opening and closing the trunk so many times. My license plate lights and trunk switch wasn't working because of a fully broken ground. One reverse light was on the verge or breaking so if you guys have issues get that fixed as it's easy to access.

On another note, I completed my Brembo GT BBK install on my ///M this afternoon with Botond's help. It is always more fun to do mods with people helping out...luckily I am within driving distance from Botond. He showed me his LED lighting setup tonight and I was impressed! Had the day off from work and had to choose between yard work and working on the ZHP. The car won. Just picked up the car a few months ago and have sorted the mechanicals. Now turning my attention to aesthetics. I received the parts I needed to refresh the center console so it seemed like a good time to pull the seats and clean the crud off of the carpet from the PO. The before pic does not show it all, but there were ample coffee stains and goo between the tunnel and seats. Came out pretty well with a mini carpet cleaner. As soon as my alcantara boots dry from their sonax bath I will put them in and post the refreshed console. It was killing me driving the car for the last 2 months without doing this. What a relief.

Yea, bath is probably misleading. I used the Sonax Alcantara cleaner applied directly to the boot, lightly rubbing, but mostly patting with a white cotton tee shirt then lightly brushing with a soft brush. But, the sonax fully saturates the material. I used the same technique on a used alcantara wheel with better than expected results. I'll post the results when they dry out and I put them back in the car.

I started with a can of blue magic stain and spot cleaner I picked up at the auto parts store, then before that dried I used a mini Bissel machine 'Bissel Little Green' with some Bissel cleaning solution from Lowes. I have had the machine for 5-6 years and have used it on about 7 cars over the years. The only time I was unsuccessful with it was when my wife spilled some bright red drink on the tan carpet in her Ford Edge. It sat in the sun all day and by the time I got to it that night there was no getting it out.

Boots dried overnight and reinstalled (except I did not have the right size zip-tie for the e-brake boot so it is still loose on the handle for now). Painted the black shift plate, cleaned shift knob and installed new cupholder, coinholder and leather armrest cover. Cleaned everything else while apart with Meguiars Vinyl and Rubber Cleaner #40, switches look like new. Also pictured is the used alcantara wheel that I installed last week. I bought it thinking it needed to be recovered. It was so dirty and matted down it looked like worn leather. Since it wasn't torn I tried cleaning it with Sonax Alcantara cleaner. Started coming back to life so I gave it about 5 treatments. I applied the sonax to the wheel and lightly rubbed it in with a soft brush and white tee shirt. Then once saturated I squeezed the sonax (& dirt) out with cotton shirts. Took about 5 passes around the perimeter over 2 days, reapplying sonax after each squeeze out until the shirt was not pulling out much dirt. After it dried I hit it with a sweater shaver and a soft brush. Amazed with the results. It is not perfect, but pretty acceptable for a driver. Next up, re-dye the e-brake handle and clean the seats when the car can sit for a couple of days to dry.

ive been going switch console/panel crazy lately. the ones with fully options are $300+ and special order from germany..... i ordered one for myself a while ago after combing ebay for 2 months and forums with 0 luck.. luck would have it that after i got it and past the return period... when I was at a parts recycler locally, i looked inside a gutted m3 and it had a full option switch panel including the sunblind button BUT the car never had sunblind and it had 2 cool little covers over the heated seats button. looks like their original panel took a shit at some point and when that happens BMW just orders you the full option one as a replacement with those covers... I picked it up for $50 with the quickness as the guy had no idea what he had.
then i found 2 sunblind rear shelfs and picked them up quickly (1 for coupe and one for sedan).. one came with a really basic switch panel with only DSC heated seats and sunblind...
since i had a little collection of switch panels, i decided to take them apart and start putting together one of them to be a FULL option one itself. i had one that had all options except sunblind so I desoldered a receptacle from a spare board and soldered it into the empty location on the other board.... moved the SPORT button to that new spot and then installed the sunblind switch where the sport button was. each spot is labeled POS1, POS2 etc... so this means you can code them with NCS export and assign POSITIONS with what they are which is why the wiring/pin assignments stays the same for all of the plugs regardless of options.
then i had a spare sunblind button left over from something else i got so i opened up another switch panel and it had 6 out of 7 receptacles already even though originally it only had 2 buttons so I started adding extra receptacle and buttons to fill it out and will code those individual ones later when i get my car back to do so.
i used a dremel to route out new holes for the buttons in the panel covers as well.
guess i should do a DIY as well, this doesnt feel hard to retrofit options now. im probably going to get some of those full button convertible panels to see how they are laid out.

It is always so weird when lifting the car that's so well balanced. I lifted the rear right so I can put the stand on the front right which is so nice to do since back and front go up just about equally.
Then I lifted the opposite rear side and there becomes some magical point where the car just balances it self and I can just lift the corners and balance the car with no tires on the ground with my fingers!
All I needed to do is lift the front left up and put the stand under and pull the car back down onto it until I got a snug fit. Then I lowered the jack on the rear just a bit to put a couple hundred lbs of weight on the front stand.

Found it! The lower sway bar end link bolt was just loose enough for the bar to move up and down a few mm. The upper bolt had just a tiny bit of play too so I tightened them up hard and there's no movement. What a pain in the butt those bolts are since you need a wrench to hold one side still.
After a quick test drive though a narrow bumpy alley, all I heard was the S54 deflecting its pur against the garage doors as I passed each one. [emoji41]

Any recommendations on a good summer/fall tire? I'm debating whether or not to just go with the Michelin PSS like I used to have, or go a different route. Currently have winters on STILL and need to get them off asap. New tires will be acting as summer/fall and winters will be put on winter/spring.

Kristen took the ZHP to the dealership to have the oil level sending unit I bought last summer put in... I'm getting sick of looking at the CEL for it. Curse my dumb ass for not buying the replacement while I had the oil pan out.
They are going to suck out the oil then put it back in for me since it only has about 1K on it since the last oil change... Her employee labor rate is $30 hr. Worth the $60 it will cost me to have it done :)

Bought a leather M3 steering wheel. I figure I'll keep it as a spare in case I need to rewrap the Coby wheel, or send it off for a perf wrap. Haven't decided, but it looks good enough to use as-is. I wasn't exactly looking for a new wheel, it was just too cheap to pass on.

There was a delete on a car at LKQ that was really rough. I was tempted to take it anyway and try refinishing it, but lacked the necessary motivation.

Yeah I have never used my arm rest in either car, it's in the up position 100% of the time. I love the shorty console it opens up some space in the back and again eliminates the arm rest being in the way.

I just bought a dirt cheap set of 135i Brembo calipers (basically the Performance brakes, just not Phoenix Yellow). I'm not sure what to expect condition-wise, and I know installation isn't a simple task, but they were way too cheap to pass on. Worst case I'll just turn around and resell them, because I know I won't have a problem offloading them at the price I just paid.

There'd been some speculation and joking from Peter and I about what kind of calipers would actually show up. Would they be some babytown calipers from a 128i? Would I just get a heavy box full of miscellaneous metal scraps? Some combination of the above? Well, without further ado:

Insurance part out I stumbled upon online. $40/caliper. 10% discount on 2 of them for buying multiple items. They didn't care if they were Brembo or not--calipers from a 2007 Malibu were the same price. I took a gamble, because there were no pictures of the wheels themselves, so I really could only speculate on what I was buying.

I had to run back to work before I could do any more than basically open the box, but at least I'm not heartbroken about what I saw. Oh yea, and I paid $152 for all four calipers shipped.

$152 shipped???!!! That's the bargain of the year!!! Good find!

Honest answer? I was already submitting an order through ECS and I was lazy. I saw a pair FS on M3forum about a month ago, and did some research, so I already knew they'd be a good choice.

Plus you got a lifetime of RSM bushings. Just take em off and throw a new pair on from FCP lifetime replacement.

I figured out my sticky coupe door opening. Opened up the inside of the door to peak inside and learn how the door mechanism works because it's hard to tell from just pictures. See how that adjustment bolt works was nice to understand.
Did some lubing up of the actuator from the inside and also learned ultimately the main stick is from a worn door latch!! Because of all the force and friction, the inside of the latch where the part on the door that's grabbing the latch is a bit raw and not chrome shiny. It's a bit rusted so I did some cleaning up and lubricating.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170523/da0b530569e5ac8a44c89808fe6cf47a.jpg
Then I cleaned out the actuator and lubricated that. Make sure the inside where it holds the door latch is lubricated too.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170523/b34dcd8aafa9c7f89997c1a57adc13c8.jpg

Yep I adjusted that. But that wasn't the problem. The main problem is the door striker is probably off a little. So I'll adjust that next to get it so the actuator doesn't rub so hard against the striker when the door is closed. But maybe I just need new strikers. I'll play around more.

Got the second rear shock swapped out tonight. Next time I will buy new bump stops and dust boots. Not that anything was wrong with mine, but because removing the old rusty RSM was the biggest pain in the ass I've experienced in some time. Admittedly it might've been easier had my bench vise not been 130 miles away in a storage unit.
I addressed a couple rust spots in the wheel wells while I was in there, and resprayed the entire area with fresh undercoating. Down in the land of 5 snow days per year, it should hold up for quite a while.

Nope, but hey at least the dampers damper now!
Probably subframe bushings or endlinks. I'm toying with the idea of pulling a carrier at LKQ, and pre-pressing the bushings. That way I can work at my own pace without the car in the air, and also replace what is arguably the rustiest part of the car.

The fronts Koni Yellows come with a little white tool you use to adjust. The rears you have to fully compress the damper and use a hex key to adjust the firmness.

Finally installed the 18x8.5 APEX Arc-8's (Anthracite, ET38) I purchased as part of a group buy this winter ($200 off the set). They're wearing Michelin Pilot Super Sports--245/40 all the way around. Having trimmed in excess of 40 pounds of unsprung weight, she's definitely quicker and rides like a dream. Annoying tramlining, which was pretty bad with the stock tires, is much reduced. On top of that, they look gorgeous, are easy to clean, and don't rub (PLENTY of room with stock suspension)!

My brother just sent me this picture from NC, absolutely gorgeous.
Absolutely gorgeous. What's the mileage, or did I miss this?

Ordered all new fluids for the car, Z4M FCABs, M3 RTABs with limiters, and flushed the brake fluid. Just started driving the car after 8 months of it sitting in a garage, so getting it back to where it deserves to be.

got the Headlight washer trim pieces in Imola from Slater yesterday. went ahead and started the retrofit process of installing the washer jets, running the waster hose lines etc...
the official documentation says i have to remove the front bumper and also in my case the M3 aux fan... no way i was doing that.. instead just loosened the radiator, tilted it forward and was able to push the washer jet hose line across the V bar on the back of th core support like instructed in the PDF.
washer jets are all installed and put back together. just need to fab up a wire harness for the relay and wire it into the fuse box.
I cant wait to get this working and then start making posts "My headlight washers are leaking everywhere help!"

LOL! awesome. they look like they match pretty well!
do you need the electrical connectors? i totally forgot to ask you that before i shipped the covers. :)

no i bought a pretty complete kit from a part out locally that came with black trim pieces and covers. i was able to snag the relay and some wire along with the 2 pin plug for the washer pump as well.
I'm relocating my washer reservoir to the spare empty battery tray on the passenger side so i need to lengthen all washer hoses to the pumps as well.
one of your washer covers.. the driver side actually had broken clips (the 2 loops that attach to the washer nozzle) ? one was broken and the other loop was missing so I had to cut off the loop from a spare black cover and then gorilla epoxy it on over night. so ill check it today to make sure its good then install it today as well.
other than that, yes the covers match 100% better than my original ones which are some weird dark red.
thanks man!

I ordered two pre-cat O2 sensors today. I'm hoping that I haven't permanently screwed up my converters from driving with P0420 and P0430 codes for the longest time.
Bosch 17216 from Amazon (03/2003 and up).
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CF3WPI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I also ordered a leather steering wheel cover from China for $43. My Alcantara wheel is pretty damaged in two spots and I can't justify $300+ or more for a quality refinished one. Instructions say that it goes over the original leather so I'll have to find some foam/padding to the low spots.

The part covered in paracord is worse. Most likely rubbing from the previous owner getting and out of the car.

I would NOT install that cover over anything you already have installed. I'd remove the material that's on there, THEN wrap it.
johnson_n
05-31-2017, 06:50 PM
Why is that?
I'm guessing they recommend to do that way because the wrap is already cut and stitched for a certain diameter. Removing any material will make it a loose(r) fit. On the other hand, the Alcantara material on there looks pretty thin so there's no loss/gain in removing it beforehand.
az3579

Why is that?
Because if you don't remove the material, you will get a lumpy/uneven wrap. The material underneath wouldn't be consistent, so neither would the covering material. Removing the worn alcantara layer will provide you a smooth, even surface to apply the wrap to.
