Installed the rest of interior trim pieces today. Took em off to have the pillars wrapped in Alcantara. Forgot the pics... Test fit the TS2 to the spare motor and am getting close to install. Should have everything ready for install next weekend.

You'd be surprised. I do a light Plastidip re-coat on my X3 grilles every 2 years or so, and it looks surprisingly good. The key with Plastidip is to be quite gentle when washing.

Why not paint? PlastiDip looks like total crap if it starts to peel, not to mention how hard it is to remove once that happens.

Visited my Indy over the weekend for a noise under the hood. Power steering pump is on the way out (not bad for 175k miles) but they also let me know my differential has started leaking. :( It's literally the one thing I didn't have them do when I had my maintenance-palooza last year, and now it has to come back out to be re-sealed... Ugh. Hindsight is always 20/20.
Why not paint? PlastiDip looks like total crap if it starts to peel, not to mention how hard it is to remove once that happens.Yeah, and companies like Krylon are making plastic-specific sprays that should really adhere well.

It's a very high-chip area, so Plasti dip has its merits. I painted mine, but I'm guessing it will be chipped all to hell long before Spenser's Plasti dip starts peeling.

It being a high-chip area is exactly why I'd use paint on plastic. Since you'll be re-doing it often due to the rock chips, with paint you at least won't have to go peeling off what's already there before you lay down another coat.
I tried PlastiDip on my front bumper trim a while back. I laid it on very thick, as you're supposed to. It was all peeling and chipped up within months and it looked horrendous. When rocks or other debris hits it, the debris penetrates the layer and it starts to peel. With paint, at least you can just spray right over it and call it a day.

Quality of results definitely depends on the surface. Because that lower mesh isn't something people look at (other than color) I wouldn't bother peeling before reapplying--considering how anal I am, that's saying something.

This is the grille on my E83. I've not given this car any love since getting the ZHP, and I'd say that dip is at least 18 months old. Given the X3 slats are about 2" wide, I consider it a pretty high-chip area. Not trying to be argumentative, just saying decent results are achievable.
Edit: that's bug splatter on the middle slat, not something wrong with the PD.

I would imagine we have much higher traffic volume, and definitely have a shit ton of salt on the roads at almost all times during the winter. Perhaps that is what was contributing to my sub-optimal results?

Perhaps! I'm wondering if the texture of the trim has something to do with it? I have no basis for such a claim, but it's a thought. Too many untested variables!

Just completed a big round of maintenance this month. Had to replaced the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket, as both were leaking. And while I was in digging in the engine, I took the time for a whole bundle of preventative maintenance I had been putting off: oil change, replaced CCV separator and hoses, replaced Vanos piston seals, new DISA gasket, new expansion tank and radiator hoses with coolant flush, replaced tranny and differential fluids, and replaced all the vacuum caps and o-rings that were accessible.
Feels good to finally bring all my maintenance up to date.

I was having an intermittent RPM bounce at idle, and after completing all the work it seems to have resolved that. Not sure if the problem was the Vanos or the vacuum system, but it is idling perfect now. Otherwise with the Vanos it hard to say at this point if benefitted engine performance - I have only put on about 60 miles since I completed the work, and they say it needs around 200 miles to break in the seals.
Even though my car is an '04 it only has 97,000 miles on it.

That's absurd. I paid $500 for black, heated, memory, lumbar, bolstered M3 seats. I'd say they were in 8.5-9/10 condition.

$900 is a bit too much $500 is a steal. I landed about the middle. Mine are also heated with lumbar and bolster.
They were in great shape. Having them out of the car i took the chance to use a Leatherique kit on them and they came out great.
I'll post some before and after pics when I install them next week.

Well those are the premium ones with power lumbar and power side bolsters.
Mine are the standard ones without lumbar or powered side bolsters. They still hold me in good though!

Hard to tell from the picture (and the ad is worthless), but I don't see the bolster button. Only feature he mentions is power, which probably means it doesn't have anything else.

Replaced my main belt tensioner pulley over the weekend. Disappointed at myself for giving my indy the tensioner assembly but no new pulley when I did my maintenance last year, so the bearing finally went dry about 3 weeks ago and started making a ton of noise. Nice and quiet again now.

On another note...not sure what this means for my alignment. The worn part is the inner side of the rear tire and both rears are the same. The alignment is set to near OEM settings with no extra negative camber than stock. I did drive it harder this season and went sideways many times in the rain and always in the snow. LOL. The fronts are perfectly fine.

Our 2000 328i has the sport pkg & wears out the inner rears, and that's with no hard or sideways driving! I guess it's just what the camber with sport ride height does.

(I definitely tried to not oil it too much). So I took out the MAF and sprayed it a few times (there were actually minor tiny bits of "oil" on the screen, so I carefully poked those out as well), made sure all hoses/clamps were tight and aligned, and now no more rough idle. Looking forward to the mini So Cal meet this Saturday.

John, with oiled filters I usually spray as little oil as possible, and give it time to wick around the whole filter. You usually need a lot less oil than you think, and a lot more time to let it wick. After the filter is uniformly coated, I usually wrap/stuff it with paper towels for a night to soak up any excess. Doing it this way, I haven't yet (in 25+ years) had any issue with over-oiling; however, it is a slow pain in the a$$ to do it right.

Thanks for the info. I did wrap it, turned it several times, re-wrapped it, etc. Obviously it wasn't enough to prevent an issue so I will try even less oil next time.

With all the new oil-less filters out there, it's a tough choice. From what I understand, the oiled filters both filter AND flow better, but have these additional hassles and risks.

When I used to do motocross, I always had two filters. I always had the spare oiled and ready to go. Granted, I'd change out the filter with every ride but if you have a spare, you can prep it a few days in advance and just swap it out...

I don't think so. When I was looking to buy a replacement filter for mine, I didn't find any other filter that would fit apart from the oiled k&n one, which was quite difficult to find too...

Turns out I'm making too much boost! The intake boot has been collapsing under the suction and creates a vacuum leak. I can feel when this happens and cel goes off every time. Hopefully ESS has a solution, it's annoying having to take intake apart to put the boot back on. #boostproblems

Just installed the homemade clutch stop from lowes. I hope I don't wear down the clutch faster or something with all that dead space removed now.

You'll be fine. If the car can start then you aren't wearing anything down. Mine was set just enough to initiate engine start. The clutch was going strong even at 180K miles. I could still launch aggressively at 3500 no problem which I did a few times per month.

That looks like a rubber hose the one I got is silicone. Also, Are you sure your filter isn't clogged or under sized? it shouldn't be doing that with a clean properly sized filter. AJ said that is important...

It feels like a rubber boot. I'm using stock air box with K&N drop in filter. Guess I'll try cleaning it today but it doesn't look too dirty. Hans said he's going to help get me a new boot. It's the strangest thing how it is able to even move being sandwiched in there how it is. Feel like I'm in an episode of the twilight zone. Lol
I tried resetting position of box, tightening it down, tightening down all clamps but it still ends up slipping off. It only happens under Max boost because if I baby it I can drive around town with no issues.

Mini meet with carbonzhp and sillieidiot. New fcabs, front strut reinforcement plates, and a new (used) carbon fiber CSL replica trunk (they did not make OEM CSL trunks). Definitely fixed some issues and I love the trunk. Hard to see the c/f accents I left on the sloiler edge and license plate area. A great day with great guys. #mafiafamilyhelpingfamily

Did the oil pan gasket and changed trans fluid, since I was in there. Turns out my motor mounts were shot. Driver's side was sheared clean off. Upgraded to M3 mounts. Mmm
I measured the motor mounts and the engine now sits about 5/16" higher on passenger side and about 3/8" higher on driver's side. I also replaced the other trans mount. With the (somewhat) stock geometry back I think it's easier to shift. Could just be placebo effect, I'll judge later.
What a difference the mounts made! I took it on a quick jaunt and now that busted road up the street isn't so jarring.

Replaced my passenger side window switch module since one of the levers broke off of it. Also found out that my silver cube shifter trim was wrapped in some really janky black "weave" (not even CF) vinyl wrap.. I honestly thought it was Black Cube that the PO installed at some point.
Tore it all off while I was in there. While I do like black around the shifter, the look of the actual trim is much more aesthetically pleasing.

the M 235i badge has much larger and more rounded straight font to match the M better size wise.
heres what mine looks like currently on the table with the spacing i planned on using. I may just go with 332i or just ///M liek the M coupes still not sure yet.

Also got my oem connectors for the PDC system so i can plug in the PDC using the OEM retrofit system to go into the fuse box properly and also do the same for my RLS retrofit. there were about 7 i did for the PDC wiring.

I quite like the black badges. I think I like just the 332i, as you said the ///M doesn't quite match the numbers.

Lol sounds like most of the posts on the BMW subreddit. It doesn't bother me if you've got an S54 under the bonnet, much like the S52 powered E30 sedan I saw in Knoxville which people shit all over because "fake ///M wah wah wah."
The grille stripes people have on their base model F30 328s, on the other hand, irk me to no end.

I was planning on doing it but my subframe was in worse shape than I thought when I went to turner to install my diff, so I had them do that as well. I had an autox the next day and didn't want to risk it, especially with the diff installed.

please... the subframe is the carrier than holds the diff and the rear control arm mounting points. you had a crack in the RACP (Rear Axle Carrier Panel - aka, the rear floor).

well, if you are eager, and don't mind crying, do a search for 'E46 RACP failure' (carnage) and 'VinceBar' (the solution). it ain't pretty, but you're likely early enough in the onset to prevent more damage if you address it now (not with plates, they do not address the root of the problem).
i'm pretty confident that at least 40% of the cars on this forum have that same initial crack near the left rear mount that yours did, and i would definitely urge them to inspect.

if one studies the RACP's design, the load path, and the failures (there's tons of cutaway images out there), they will quickly realize that plates won't do squat.
the VinceBar is the best solution i've seen thus far (and hey, you have one en route, right? or did it arrive already?).

I guess I can only go by my experience. LOL I drove my 2003 ZHP softly 98% of the time. The RACP was fine after 180k miles. When everything was taken out due to a writeoff. The chassis was stripped for recycling. I must have been the lucky one! [emoji41]

As I've seen now that plate installation has matured in some E46s, cracks are developing outside of the plates. The whole RACP is weak so plates just move the weakness to another location. I have a Vincebar sitting in my house for installation this year as it makes plate reinforcement obsolete as far as longevity. You can keep using your car in the mean time because the next weak point hasn't been torqued on as much. You'll have only prolonged it so when it's time for new bushings, put in a correct/bulletproof fix. It'll be happy sailing for the chassis after that.

Ended up costing a little over $500 for a full set of OEM, currently have drilled but I've heard mixed things about them. Some say that if you're going performance then get slotted not drilled. Others say that the plain ones are the exact same thing. Opinions?

Cost me around $180 :/ not a cheap key I suppose, and trust me I tried to replace the battery myself and posted my failed attempts somewhere on here. Quite comedic looking back at it now lol

FWIW I have been really surprised at the difference between wet and dry braking on my car in the year since I got it. I had years on Zimmerman drilled rotors with my previous car and didn't see such a falloff in wet braking. Certainly plan to switch over to drilled or slotted when the time comes.

My Zimmerman rotors warped quickly. But that was many years ago. Maybe the process is better now for production so they're stronger. I also saw hairline fracturing around the holes on my rotors. I have used the car in a way where the rotors were glowing but that was over a long period of aggressive driving to turn them red. Once I knew that I gave them a cool down by driving at speed for 10-15 mins. Maybe they cooled too fast but my Stoptech Street Performance pads totally took the punishment. They passed with flying colors.

2. Clean charcoal cabin filter and filter housing.
3. Installed a set of LED interior lights. The set was about $20; nice white light.
4. R+R battery to install vent elbow.
5. Clean out trunk and check/reinflate spare (low).
6. Lubrimoly engine flush and oil + filter change.

I haven't been active for a very long time. There has been some many upgrades with my car. I need to wipe all dust from thread at some point.
Today is the big day for my car since the rear subframe is out. Here is the plan for this weekend:
- TMS plates weld in
- change diff, rear subframe, RTAB, sway bar bushings
-sway bar end links
- upper and lower ball joints
- center support bearing for the drive shaft.
-other little things if the time permits.
Hopefully, with a tool rented from Shawn, bushings part will be easy to do.
While car is lifted I noticed that FCAB are shot. I replaced them 3 years ago once I bought the car. But I used a aftermarket crap and that was a mistake. Rear shocks are garbage. They were replaced by previous owners with something aftermarket and questionable quality. I am wasn't planing to change shocks this year due to the other projects, but FCAB will be changed for sure.
OK, that's enough words. Here is some pictures:

Attempted to temporarily install my new Morimoto 2Stroke LED headlight bulbs. Unfortunately, I had to promptly remove them due to a hiccup; no highbeam shutter operation. I'll be detailing more on this in my project thread soon.

How much sludge came out with the engine flush? Were you able to DIY or did you have it done somewhere? I noticed a lot of build up and was wanting to do a flush.

DIY thing, and not much is visible as it dissolves it; the oil is pretty dark though. I use this stuff (or BG's "109") every third oil change, mostly to keep the rings unstuck. If you can see buildup, it's usually a good idea to R+R the valve cover and clean the worst of it manually, then use a cleaner.

I would be up for that! I am metro west but in Cambridge & Medford for work all week. I went to German Car day at Larz Anderson last year and there were a few members there. Not sure if I will make it this year though, as I believe that it falls on Fathers Day.

They're pretty good, though I don't have much of a basis for comparison. It was their second season and I don't see much of a reason to pay more for winter tires. They didn't get much use this warm winter. Usually the snow was well sorted before I started driving.

make sure you clean up that area to assess all damage - are those popped spot welds in the rusty area? you'll want to either re-weld or drill out and install rivets (better idea), if they are indeed popped.

I cleaned some of the black plastic and rubber with isopropyl alcohol (po got wax all on it) followed by a treatment with Solutions Finish, washed, clayed, and waxed. I ran out of light before I could dress the wheels and trim. I'm exhausted

I found most of the smell was actually coming from the sound proofing covering the rear suspension, but everyone keeps saying its the under the rear bend stuff.
I never had that smell. Even if I did, I'd like it!
It's the classic early to mid-2000s BMW smell.

i have a friend who had a nervous breakdown in february and is in rehab for a year. his poor wife has two young kids and a house to look after, works full time as an underpaid teacher at my kids' school, and to top it off.... has a needy a 2002 325iT steptronic. she can't afford to have stuff fixed so my wife and i decided to help her out (my wife is my brake bleeding partner ;)). it was overdue for an oil change and both front brake lines were cracked and rotting (i had noticed this when i replaced both front control arms, FCABs, and tie rods just before my friend was hospitalized).
i heard some clunking when i drove it back to my house and suspected that the left front strut was dead, which i confirmed when i had the wheels off. also when the wheels were off, i noticed the front pads and rotors were nearly done. great.
so i get to work - the oil pan drain bolt had almost zero resistance, and he is what i found when i removed it... well, whatever 'it' is. i'm really surprising it wasn't leaking, because this thing was barely making any kind of a seal at all. this is why you should change you own oil. i'm assuming the oil change place they brought it to before put this into the oil pan... cause it sure ain't stock:

i spent about 45 minutes looking through fastener bins trying to find something suitable that i could use for an oil pan bolt - it's an M12 x 1.5, which is not really used anywhere on the car except for wheel lug bolts. and that wouldn't work. finally i found one that was the correct thread pitch, but was a bit long - so i stacked 6 thick washers under the head, and then a fresh crush washer, and in it went. i was relieved when it was in and tightened.
the oil filter and new brakes lines went in without drama. whew.
i also found the right front corner light had a lot of condensation in it.... i had a spare so i replaced it, and when i took the old one out (TYC brand - cheap aftermarket crap), look at how much water it had taken on!

all in all, a satisfying repair. as i delivered the car back to her this morning, thinking how am i going to tell her it needs a front strut and new brakes when she has no money, i realized that hey, i'm going to have some not-yet-dead-and-not-leaking OEM sport front struts and a nearly-new set of 325i rotors and pads from my Touring in a month when i do the drivetrain/brake/suspension swap from the ZHP! a DD's need being met from my swap project - i love it. it truly is better to give than to receive. :)

Staggered with 18x10 rear. I worked out the math and the fitment should be fine, but bye bye to rotating tires. Can't argue the fact that a staggered setup looks more at home on a coupe than square, though.

i agree, it does... but what size tire? fortunately the coupe has a bit more room in the rear arch than the sedan/Touring do.

dude... i am speechless. i appreciate the thought - i really do! - but this is way beyond necessary. i was happy to buy her parts this go-round, and the struts and rotors + pads are coming off the Touring. so no money out of pocket there. but i really do appreciate the thoughtfulness, that is what counts! :)
the car does need an alignment, though (she hasn't gotten that done since i replaced the other suspension bits a couple months ago). haven't figured that one out yet.

255/35 will fit, albeit with a little more stretch than I'd probably prefer. I'm trusting his math in saying a 265 *might* fit. I'd love to transfer these PSS over if possible.
Ideally I'd rather have a 9-9.5" rear, but the CH (I've been told) is discontinued so options are limited. Since the PSS is non-directional I can still rotate side-to-side. And honestly every wheel I'm considering is going to be staggered anyway (gotta' get that deep concavity in the rears if I go the CSL route!)

Thanks for the advice Peter. Those are factory spot welds. I am going to weld TMS next weekend and going to put rivets on that rusty area.

OK, cool - glad you haven't gotten to it yet. :) make sure you clean (wire wheel and degrease) the area well, so you can accurately inspect the entire area (but you're likely going to find most damage in that left rear area). and then protect it with some rust converter, anti-rust primer, anti-rust paint, and rubberized undercoating. then wax-spray it!
also, check the seam where the RACP meets the vertical sheet metal in the wheel well (right behind the shock body) - mine cracked there, and that is a common spot to crack after the left rear crack that you have. and if you have popped spot welds, you likely have a crack there - which is actually the RACP separating (or trying to) from the body. you can drill 5-6 holes through the two panels and put some rivets there. i might have a picture of mine. it actually stopped moving after i did that! rivets have amazing shear strength.

I've been texting with the seller, and got really sad when I realized that although it's just one state over, said adjacent state is quite wide and the city is on the farthest possible corner from NC. It's a solid 9 hour drive...
Then he mentioned he's in NC for college, graduating in a couple of weeks, and has family coming into town for graduation. He is seeing if there will be room in his family's car to bring the wheels when they drive up for graduation. So if they have space, I guess I'm buying a set of CHs.

If you're talking about fitting CHs in a ZHP it depends on if they have tires. I think regardless you could put one or two in the trunk and then lay a cloth down in the back seat and put one to two wheels and then put one in the front seat if needed. When I bought my ZHP I got a crummy set of e46 wheels and winter tires and fit one in the trunk and 3 in back seat with no issues.

When I bought my ZHP I got a crummy set of e46 wheels and winter tires and fit one in the trunk and 3 in back seat with no issues.
If you have fold down seats, it would be a lot easier to just fold down the rears and stack them laying down, two on each side. They fit this way even with tires, and they're a lot easier to get out of the car, IMO.

Replaced my old clutch/brake Pedal Haus pedals with new ones from them. They changed a lot since I last bought them. New shape so it fits better, the anodizing is way more black now so now my dead and acceleration pedals look even more purple.

How is the E53 for cargo? I honestly thought my X3 was too narrow inside for much more than my dogs. I distinctly remember not being able to get my 50" TV (still in the box) in the back without risking irreparable headliner destruction.

How is the E53 for cargo? I honestly thought my X3 was too narrow inside for much more than my dogs. I distinctly remember not being able to get my 50" TV (still in the box) in the back without risking irreparable headliner destruction.
75lb and 45lb pit bulls have plenty of room. Also love that the seat are electric incline decline for more space but still blocking the dogs. I get my 15 gallon shop vac, two 5 gallon buckets full of supplies, some hoses, a Pressure washer, step ladder, and some other little things with only having to fold down one side for the step ladder. Much more room than my sisters' e83s

LOL headliner destruction.
It's tan (read: shows dirt very easily and hard as hell to clean), and really padded. Seriously it's obnoxious--a handprint will take several minutes to dissipate.

That sounds huge; it definitely doesn't look that large from the outside. My E83, as it sounds like you know, is really just a tall touring from a cargo perspective.
