That's great work. I replaced mine late last year but did not take out the full headlight assemblies. I just popped out the headlight lenses and swapped the seals.
I should have done that. I thought the headlight washers would've been in the way

What's the part# for the seal and is it easy to change? I think mine looked a bit out of shape last time.

Not easy. Kinda sucked honestly lol. The new seals are so much thicker than the old and it's so hard to press the lens in.

Takes less than five minutes. Pull out the old, push in the new. Don't do it when the engine is hot.

Is this with the plastic cover on or off?
Repaired the stupid broken headlight wiring AGAIN, expoxied the broken bumper brackets back on and re-set bumper, and painted the lower grill a nice satin black. Having a neighborhood lift sure is nice...

Yeah, they took a price bump in 2014 or so. I bought a 5-speed for my '03 330Ci for about that price in early 2013, and then ever since I've only ever been able to find it for $70+ new.

Cool!
I was coming to the thread to post about mine. I just swapped in a pair of them yesterday, heated, too. Eventually I'll get the seat heater setup from ECS Tuning and get 'em wired up. The seller had already mounted them on sedan brackets, so it would've been totally simple, however the car I got them from was in an accident, so the driver's tensioner had detonated, and needed replacing. I used the one from my existing seat, but it took a little time to work out how to get the right cables removed. Fortunately the passenger seat was OK, and replacing it took 15 minutes, tops.
I found that one of the seatbacks is missing a clip, so I'll have to go get a replacement kit with ALL the hardware. You can't just buy the clip

Pulled my belts, tensioners, upper and lower radiator hoses, thermostat, water pump, and expansion tank.
Pretty sure everything was original at 125k. Tensioner bearings were pretty bad, belts could have been worse but were showing threads all the way around.
I still need to get the belts back on, and fill up with coolant I ran out of time.

I cleaned up the interior a bit yesterday with RX UV Protectant and I used Chemical Guys Silk Shine Dressing to finish it up. Here's the the before/after they put on the amazon product page:

It didn't turn out perfect, but I also applied it to the cube trim. Let's just say the cube trim was popping today. :cool
It also smells great, and got rid of the remnants of the smell from the RX (not the best choice for interior).

I'm not sure this was the best combo, since RX alone adds protection. The RX is better suited for the exterior due to the smell, though I'm sure it would air out. I got a few cans when autogeek was putting them in free after your order was over a certain $$$ limit. I use it regularly on my exterior trim with each car wash. It seemed useful enough when I saw what this guy was doing http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/product-reviews/91820-surprising-find-rx-uv-protectant-cleaner-polish.html
The CG silk shine dressing was pretty nice, especially on the cube trim and the hard plastics. I think I still need to try a more detailed application on the rest of the dash, etc. CG also has an interior cleaner that might pair better with this, as well as a cleaner + shine in one type product.
I think we need to freshen up the detailing section. It's looking a bit unused.

Oh my god I finally fixed my squeaky brakes! A lot of people told me that the pads I use are notorious for squealing, but I was "hoping" the sound I was getting was from the caliper housing and metal on metal grinding, not the pad. So after about a 2hr learning curve I finally managed to get everything taken apart, wire brushed the backs of the pads and the parts of the caliper where the pad slides in, then put Copper Anti-Seize on those points(back of pad, metal ends of pads, and caliper housing where contact is made). And oh my gosh it's buttery smooth, took it around the block a couple times because I couldn't believe it actually worked. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170223/3c0bfba32439961225969047d1715c60.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170223/ce0952e63015bcffda2a4822f8d2b459.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170223/fea2f798c5559a4b4fb4bdf933e66451.jpg

Changed transmission fluid today with MTL, seems a bit smoother than before. Drove the car onto ramps to change it and then realized I didn't have a way to put the rear end on jack stands , so I just used 2 floor jacks and lifted it in the the back on each side hoping it wouldn't fall, but I felt safer since the front was on ramps.

I did the driver side upper already because its lower seal was okay. It's not that bad, although I might redo it (live and learn). Use about 4-5" of this tubing inside the new seal through the Hofmeister Kink and it'll come out great. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170226/00ab3ac2afb7bd32e0c0eeb862a65cea.jpg This is aquarium tubing, but I'm sure you can get the same dimension from Lowes/HD. I used too narrow of tube the first time so it isn't as smooth as I'd like.

That's funny...the fluid I drained from my differential also look pretty clean but I don't have any records of the owner making that service. I did change the manual transmission fluid yesterday. That came out black as the night sky so I was glad I changed that.

The upper seal is integrated into the overhead trim piece (which is just effing stupid, but I'm past that). That whole piece is like $500 per side IIRC. The lower is also part of the trim, but at $115 it's much more reasonable.
For comparison, the matte shadowline lower piece is ~$30. I guess there are times when an M3 is cheaper than a ZHP.

There's a link to a video in the text as well. The aquarium pvc isn't mentioned by the OP, but by one of the commenters. I know the pic I posted above is the correct size, because it was the leftover tubing given to me by the guy I bought my M3 seats from (he did this on his car and it looked fantastic).
So, you need:
•One foot of 1/4"ID-3/8"OD tube
•An 8' package of "7/8-3/4" adhesive-back bulb-style weather stripping"
•PH2 bit and a flex-neck driver
•Small flathead for pressing the seal into the upper trim rail
•Towels for keeping the window shimmed outward
•an extra pair of hands (this is where I f'ed up)

I cleaned the windows on the inside using Stoner's Invisible Glass. I can never get them streak free. The best technique seems to be a heavy 1st coating then wipe down. Then follow with a lighter coating and use a drier side or new towel.

When your windows are clean enough and free of oils, then it'll be easy to clean them streak free. I just use a damp towel in one hand and a dry towel in the other. Wax on, wax off! As long as the dry follows immediately after damp, there should be no streaks. [emoji1417][emoji1417]

+1. Otherwise use Stoners IG to remove oils, then use the damp towel/dry towel method. Just using water will also help reduce internal fogging.

Went to the local BMW Sterling dealership today. They installed the new driver side airbag from the recall. While they were in there, I had them take a look around and they confirmed what another shop had found:
1. One Torn engine mount
2. Worn out control arm bushings
And unfortunately, the found my oil pan was leaking (but not too badly) and recommended new Gasket. That's a lot of labor. They offered to do all three jobs for $1200 plus parts for the control arms bushings and engine mounts that I could provide.
I'm going to hold off on all this work for now except the control arm bushings which I'll be doing in a few weeks with the new suspension parts I bought.

Next time you are under the car, you can attempt to tighten the oil pan bolts slightly to slow down the leak. But eventually you will end up replacing the oil pan gasket.
Engine mounts are super easy to replace at that time as well with E46 M3 mounts.
IIRC I did this job in my driveway back in 2014 and will be doing the oil pan gasket on the wifes car this summer. I even got the engine cross brace tool to do this job
But $1200 is on the lower side of the cost I seen to replace an oil pan gasket and mounts.

I'm still struggling to decide whether to replace engine Mounts. I have no symptoms at this time. The diagnosis was leaking fluid. I am starting autocross in two weeks.
And why is M3 Mounts best? Won't the ride be more harsh since they don't have fluid?
And my leak in oil pan is slow. No fluid on ground, but there is fluid on the bottom of oil pan and on the underside of the belly pan.
Initially I was planning to have all this work done since dealer offered $1000 for both oil pan gasket and engine mounts. But now I'm rethinking the urgency.

Probably because those mounts were designed for your engine. There is indeed increased NVH with the M54 using M3 mounts.
Personally I love the feel, but it isn't as buttery smooth as the M54 mounts.

It's noticeable, but it's not harsh. It's like the difference between getting in a stock E46 and getting into a stock E30. The E30 has more engine "feel", but it's not obtrusive at all. You only (barely) feel it at idle; it's silky smooth the second you touch the throttle. It's essentially an OE+ mod. I'm so used to it that I forgot I even did the mod.

Well, in our case, "probably"? Why it's better depends on what you're after.
When I did it, I was after a car that didn't feel so numb with regards to the overall "experience". It was too refined, if that makes sense. I wanted a car that made me feel like I was driving it, instead of just driving "in" it. This is why I could never have an electric car; I need to feel the car itself, just enough, to make me feel like I'm actually involved. With that said, this is nothing like solid mounts (feel everything like you're being hit upside the head with it, noise up the wazoo, etc.). It's more like a gentle reminder that you are in a car and not in a living room with background noise. :)
If it lasts longer, that's just a bonus. :thumbsup

Took the removable hardtop to an auto upholstery shop and had the headliner replaced. Instead of using the black-gray color fabric of the original, we opted for a black headliner fabric with full insulation installed between the underside metal surface and the new headliner material. There was virtually no insulating material present in the original arrangement and this explains why the car was actually quieter on the trip home with the convertible top back up in place than when I was driving over to the upholstery shop with the hardtop in place.

Also after reading Derek's (derbo) post on the bluetooth kit he bought, I bout the MPOW version and really like it. I went with the M3 mounts and installed them yesterday. Frankly I don't notice a difference in terms of how the car feels. So I'm glad I made this choice. One of the old mounts was torn and leaking fluid so it was time. Thanks everyone for the advice.
Here's the torn engine mount with leaking fluid

I had some warranty work done by the bodyshop that redid the hood after someone backed into me. The clearcoat was never right, and they were great when I went back in... Looks factory now. Figured it deserved a good cleaning and back-to black on some of the trim.

As a fellow TiAg, I'm still trying to decide if i want to make the switch to clears all around. I kinda like the contrast of Amber on TiAG, especially up front, but I saw some RCR tails in the flesh on a Graphite grey and it looked really good. Im torn29386 Picture for comparison
Edit: Funny. After looking at them back to back for a few minutes. I think the clears are the way to go

I do like the ambers on the front of TiAg, but I'll vote RCR every time. The lack of RCR tails on the coupe is my biggest complaint.

I prefer the ambers up front. For the rear, I think I would prefer the RCR or coupe style lights. The only problem with that is that color uniformity in all areas is also nice to have. :blink

Hey just want to let you know, you can't just change the transfer case fluid. That is monitored by one of the modules... I forget which one, it's been a few years.
You have to tell it you changed it.
There really is no need to change until it tells you to change

Interesting. Shoot me some links if you know of any with that info. I have seen pics of people changing it where the fluid was nasty. So I want to change it. My diffs and trans fluids were pretty bad. It shifts a lot smoother and the clunkiness when engaging clutch in the rear end has lessened. Still not sure what that is but thinking bad diff now

If the E53 is anything like the E83 X3, then you have to reset the VTG adaptations. There is a procedure within ISTA under Service Function that allows you to tell it that you changed the oil, at which point it runs the adaptation reset for you.

Changed out my failing starter with a spare I got with a used motor. While I was in there I cleaned out the TB and IAC. Took about 5.5 hours of labor but saved a pretty penny by going DIY. Now for a wash...
During the job I noticed the intake ports, intake manifold, injectors and valves were covered in oil and caked on sludge. I'm guessing it was from a bad CVV? I've had all the components replaced and i don't they cleaned everything like I just did. Guess I won't know for sure until I drive it for a while and pull it again. Has anyone else had this issue?

Ok good to know. Seems like the valve stems were coated in oil residue but only towards the top. The actual valves/seals look clean. I also picked up a 1,000lb engine stand from harbor freight, now I can mount the project engine!

Oh man oh man guys, just got my new clutch installed and it's... interesting. I was not prepared for the difference in flywheels to say the least lol. Ended up costing me an arm and a leg, or $3661 for it all(which is BS but it's $1500 in labor bc they've had it for a week trying to put the flywheel I ordered in). I exhausted all my options, including ordering the exact parts that came out of the old clutch, but for some reason the one I got had a 10 tooth insert when the clutch took a 22 tooth :/ so $1600 of parts are going to be getting returned to TurnerMotorsports. I'm bummed it's not what I'm used to but glad to be back behind the wheel, it's a hell of a lot smoother but the pedal weight is irking me haha, so I may look into getting a heavier spring for the clutch engagement U-Joint just to get that feel back.

At long last I replaced the antenna on my convertible...with a stubby. It took longer than expected. Just needed a 6", 1/4" ratchet extension, an 8mm head, an extending magnetic device (to find the nut that fell off the bottom of the antenna base when I loosened it) and some patience. Nice improvement though!

Removed, sprayed and reinstalled the mesh from the front bumper. Black again. (Found the diy on pulling it out in the detailing section. Very easy, good results.)

Very nice. So you followed the DIY exactly, down to what products to use? I think I might have it book marked. It's definitely on my list of things to do. My lower grill is completely faded.
Did you remove and reinstall the bumper by yourself?

So I just came out to my car and saw that my blinkers were blinking but very dim wtf. Car didn't unlock with the remote at all. Opened the trunk with the key, tested the voltage on the battery since I had my multimeter with me. It's at like 6.9v. Um why? Got jumper cables and hooked it up and still can't unlock. Car is super dead lol So since I have a keyhole delete, I climb through the trunk to get to the front seat. As soon as I had enough, started the car and unlocked the doors. The alarm went off as well for a couple seconds. It's too cold right now to be doing this shit lol
But since this is like a 4th time I've been in the back seat of my car with the seats down, I did notice that I have a shitload more space now since the sunroof delete with the headliner. I was able to move around quite easily. Way easier than what I remember.

Bumper removal is actually really easy. You just need a long extension and a large torx or hex bit to get the two bolts that run through the bumper shocks. I didn't have a large enough torx bit so I used a hex bit and tapped it out of the bolts after I removed them.

WAIT!! I guess I saw a different (better for me) diy.
I DID NOT remove the bumper. This was much easier, if a bit riskier...
I (1) opened the hood an reached down through the kidneys to ID where the 10-12 attachment points are on the mesh insert.
(2) pushed from the front at each attachment point until the mesh and surrounding frame were separate from the bumper.
(3) then I slid the mesh as far as possible towards the driver's side of the car.
(4) --here's the delicate part-- I then twisted and pulled the mesh grill out through the hole it sits behind. I imagine a warm temperature helped, and I was careful to avoid scratching the bumper paint on the tight spots.
I cleaned it, let it dry, sprayed it and fit to back in the way it came out.
The clips were reachable through the kidneys again. Be careful if you try this to
(a) be gentle pushing on the relatively weak plastic mesh,
(b) twisting and extracting / reinserting the mesh, and
(c) aligning the clips before pushing your repainted mesh grill back into place.
Best of luck-

Hmm lots of twisting of old plastic. Sounds pretty risky. How much is a new mesh insert in case one breaks theirs trying it this alternative way?

Remember guys there are two parts to the lower grill. Both parts fade.
The part above is the outer piece but the second inner part is also visible.

Completely agree. In my case it was the inner piece which made the whole car look faded even after I spent an entire weekend doing paint correction.
