20 minutes because I couldn't figure how to remove off the wiper arms. The trick is to push down on the wiper arm hinge and you wiggle the joint off the wiper shaft.

Thanks for your impressions! I'm still unsure if I would want to do it given that it shrinks the amount of the gauges that are useable during normal driving, but I am still considering it for the warm up lights and oil temp gauge instead of the useless mpg gauge. I'm probably what one would consider a biased source, but honestly you get used to the speedometer differences pretty quickly. It's a bit of a compressed range, but not so much so that you can't accurately tell what speed you're driving. For the RPM gauge, I honestly think it's better since you can actually see the needle approach the redline in your peripheral vision

IFor the RPM gauge, I honestly think it's better since you can actually see the needle approach the redline in your peripheral vision

I actually find it easier with the ZHP gauge because I know that when it's at the end (judging by the angle of the needle at 7k RPM), I'm about to run out of revs, which is especially useful on track for the occasions that I can't hear my engine (louder car being in front, for example). With the M3 gauges, I imagine there would be a lot of looking for those that don't typically see redline on a regular basis. This is one of the reasons I get messed up when I drive my friend's E36 M3 (I always ask for permission to redline) - it cuts off at a weirder needle angle than I'm used to seeing so I end up bumping the limiter when I shouldn't have. Just a visual trick.

Sockethead
08-30-2016, 07:38 AM
A visual trick you get used to quickly.
I have to rely on needle position for both gauges since I can't see the numbers without reading glasses. It took me a week or two to get used to it NBD

X5M are awesome machines But the maintenance cost is horrendous. Everyone I know that has owned one has sold it after a year or two of ownership... Including me. We had a 4.8is, the predecessor to the X5M. We spent 20K in maintenance and repairs after two years of ownership.

If you absolutely have to have it, make sure you buy a warranty with it even if its a third party warranty trust me, you'll need it. We paid $1500 for a third party warranty and it covered over $15000 in repairs.

5 Channel Alpine PDX-V9, removed the HK amp from the truck, cut and modified for the Alpine re-installed in the same location. Alpine SPR-60C component speakers in the front door (cards). It was a pain fitting them in to my satisfaction. Was going to cut the doors, but I didn't have lot of time. Dynamat of course. Bought some Alpine coaxial speakers for the rear (mine is a coupe)...After pulling off the panel, I didn't even try to get them to fit. There is no room in there and they would have to be mounted to the panel. I didn't want to deal with any rattling. I just left the tiny HK's and turned the gain down. The sub was a Rockford Fosgate Prime R1-2X10. Takes up a bit of room, but I'm good. I have a truck if I need to haul anything. I used the Technic PnP harness. The harness just plugs into the stock harness and. No cutting, soldering, connecting...Made it a bit easier. All in all the hardest part was finding my gun in the dark chasing a potential car burglar (no battery/windows down) down the roadway...Woke up and saw him looking leaning through the open window into my car. Sounds much better. Still have some rattle from the trunk from the sub, but I still have Dynamat...

Yesterday tried replacing the expansion tank mount due to what I thought was a leak. When putting the new mount on and everything back together, I still have said leak. So, I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. I need some help.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j226/duraznostj/E46/IMG_20160906_202614_zps9pzekrqa.jpg

When looking at the two mounting points for the expansion tank, you can see one of the two is not fully on. However, when I push from the bottom, coolant leaks out. I've also tried having my g/f push the tank down from the top and I push up. No dice. What am I doing wrong?

Edit: Are there o-rings on the bottom of the expansion tank?

G, you could just put in BSW speakers in the rear. Crazy re: burgular. Whammy, there are two areas (top and bottom) to 'hook' the ET to the car. Strange that it leaks just pushing on it. Don't recall re: o-rings, hopefully someone will chime in. Do you have a pressure tester?

I can't remember either if there are O-rings, but one would think there would be one for the expansion tank to mate to the ET mount. As Rando said, the expansion tank should have two L-shaped notches/arms that then slides into the mounting bracket to orient it properly. Wish I could help more. I've done the whole cooling system replacement twice now in about the span of a year and haven't had issues like that.

Sounds like a plan. I was with the other members and agree that you should hold onto the ZHP and M3 over an X5M, but getting the X5M as well is a very fun option indeed!

Hmmm, no leaks? And you sure that puddle is antifreeze? No chance it's washer fluid, maybe a leak from a headlight washer (if you have cold weather package). Maybe something got bumped in the ET swap?

Probably not the best spot to post this as it can get overlooked, etc. that said, you have to use a lot of force to seat the ET. Have her push down on the top (may need a small board to protect her hand) while you push up with a lot of force. It's been a while (so read the DIY), but I think I used a board and rubber mallet from the bottom. When it seat, and the retaining pin is in place, the tank won't separate when you pull up on it.

yes, there are o-rings, and i had some go bad (flat), after 2 years - it was a valeo tank, if i remember correctly. tank was fine, o-rings were not up to long-term use. :) if you remove them, i'm sure you can measure them and find better replacements.

Yea they seem to do the trick, very bright. Only complaint(and a common one with aftermarket e46 fog lights) is that when you're twisting them into the socket they don't catch on like OEM, it's not a snug fit so they kind of twist around. But I've been driving it constantly, and had when I bought the car it had the same problem for one bulb but it never fell out. No rattling noise either so if you can shrug that off like I did you're fine:p

I changed out the fuel pump relay. I don't think this was replaced when I had the fuel pump done previously. I ended up trying to screw the glovebox back together a few times. The hole for the left screw wasn't showing unless I applied a bit of force to the glovebox. Something still seems a bit off, but it works fine.

Is the OEM vert size you're talking about M3, ZHP, or non-ZHP specific? Stock ZHP sizes in sedans/coupes are 23.5mm and 18 mm, front/back, right? It's not like I drive that much currently, but might be a nice upgrade to go with the M3 front, and that vert rear bar, but then I have to consider I'm using a square tire setup rather than the factory staggered setup and I can't decide what I should do.

My brothers 530xi has been in the shop for the past week due to a bent control arm, bent wheel, and stripped axel, so I've been letting him use my car to get to work and so on. It was going great until this morning when he pulled up to breakfast and I went to go take a look at the car and it was an absolute pigsty. Bottles and peptobismal everywhere, random sticky liquids on the seats, filled with grass and leaves... Needless to say I was not happy. He then proceeded to tell me that he'd wash it on Tuesday when he gets his car back, but there was no way I was going to even sit in it without a full detailing in and out. So while my brother built his motor I spent the day vaccuuming, cleaning the interior, and giving her a full wash and wax.
Pro tip- don't lend your ZHP out to anyone for more than 3 days, because like fish it starts to go bad.

After the wash(wish I had a before picture, gosh it just rattles me thinking about it)

Also stopping by my local BMW dealer this week to hopefully get some things checked off the list:
1. New all season tires(Balled PSS not too great in the rain)
2. New break rotors(some serious rust and obnoxious squeeling)
3. New battery(yep, brother said that when he got in the car outside of OReilys it wouldn't start for a minute or two... Awesome)
4. Air bag warranty hopefully

Probably missing a couple other things, not excited about expenses though :facepalm

Fixed. If you care about your car, lend it to nobody! Unless, of course, that person has a proven track record of caring for the cars of others. :thumbsup
There is only one person I would lend my car to without hesitation - my best friend. He knows how much I care for it, so he treats it better than his own M3.

Truer words have never been spoken lol, but when it comes to cars I figured my brother cares about them more than I do, but I guess it's only with his own car, so it was sort of surprising when I first saw it and especially when he just tried to push it off.

I'd be downright embarrassed/ashamed if I returned a loaned car like that...
But I guess I'm one of those rare breeds who even treats rental cars better than my own. "If it ain't mine, treat it with respect"

You should see me drive Charlie's Porsche... I have 9 years of track experience, and yet I drive his Porsche like a granny. I respect him too much to beat on his car..

As outside temps cooled this fall. I noticed my car
s temp gauge staying on the low side of the gauge. I then used the hidden gauge cluster codes to show that my coolant temp stayed at 70-75 deg F at steady driving. Looked like I had a soft Thermostat failure at 98k miles (see pic - t-stat on right had a broken spring at top). I took the opportunity to do a complete cooling system refresh - 3 hoses, exp tank, radiator, t-stat, water pump, sensors, caps and screws & belts. Bought a Behr radiator and Geba water pump inexpensively on craigslist. and then backfilled with an order from Bavauto/ECS. Took the opportunity to replace some of the speed screws/clips (ECS) 27308on the plastic splash tray below engine. Noticed I need to do the Oil Filter housing gasket..as it's leaking.

Haven't been around much lately, but last week my ZHP went to the indie shop to get fresh oil. The tech/owner likes LIQUI MOLY and prefers it to BMW's oil, so that's what's in there now. I swear it's quieter. The car goes to the dealer next week for the airbag recall.

Yesterday, though I stretched out her legs. Longest trip since I bought the car last summer. Fastest, too. ;)

We met up with almost a dozen members of the Utah BMW Enthusiasts group, and headed out about 120 miles west of Salt Lake City to Wendover via the Bonneville Salt Flats.

The Salt Flats were under half a foot or so of water due to the rains earlier in the week. It was my first time there, but we're definitely going back at some point. It's in the middle of nowhere. I mean, Wendover is nine miles away and kind of dump - casinos and hotels. Legitimately nothing else around it for about an hour in each direction. Forgot to take a photo of my own car there. Doh.

Wendover is half in Nevada and half in Utah. The nice, clean, fun half is on the Nevada side and all casinos, while the old and run-down industrial half is all on the Utah side.

After a stop at a rest area on the last leg to Wendover, I had to hustle to catch up with the group. I shouldn't say exactly how fast I was going, so I'll just say the speedo had used up the vast majority of its travel. The car was smooth and stable the entire time. I can't be certain, but I'd guess the ZHP is roughly a 150MPH car give or take. :)

Cheers,
SC

Car was misfiring pretty bad for a few miles last night. Got these codes: Probably should do O2 sensors and/or ignition coils. O2 sensors are probably original on this car, so they're well overdue.

Sounds like my first time...though I wasn't too bothered since silver hides stuff pretty well. I haven't tried it since. But I would definitely recommend doing a test spot to see if you can get the desired correction, and a better way to check for scratches. In the daytime you can barely see anything on silver.

I've been tied up for the past 3 months and finally had a chance to take a few days off. Installed some very nice M seats in my 323ci. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160927/d3d660ed526fc0c37de747fb71da0d66.jpg
To replace these, which will eventually go in a buddy's e30.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160927/04885a830ef19159ce07758bff729fde.jpg
Also, figured out I have a bad sway bar end link. Started to produce definite clunking over bumps. Not CAB's since I've got PF ones there. Link was frozen pretty good, so going that route first. Waiting on new SPC top plate for camber plates I bought used a while back before I swap those out.
And finished up putting newer black seats in our e36. Rear seat will be done tomorrow. Wife likes the black on tan and we just had the headliner repaired so I don't want to swap everything out.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160927/df10b14a33faf7a921bd64d186b492fd.jpg
Also reworked the stereo in it since am/fm didn't work and had some issues with some of the speakers not working. Dead ground isolator.
EDIT: Almost forgot that I installed these too.

Changed my precat O2 sensors (which were the originals at 170k miles) and my fuel filter (which wasn't original, but was still 6 years old). Car seems to drive smoother and doesn't misfire and throw lean codes at WOT high RPMs anymore, so hopefully that's all I needed.

yeah? i knew the ZHP trans has a slightly shorter 1st gear, didn't know there was other differences.

It's an entirely different transmission - ZHP 6-speed is made by ZF, M3 6-speed is made by Getrag. The ZF is a much newer design (M3 transmission dates back to the late 80s/early 90s), and generally shifts better IMO (very apparent when driving it back to back). Z4M uses a variant of the ZHP's transmission, so even if it can't handle as much torque as the Getrag, it should be able to handle an S54 just fine.

Challenges come from the 330 version of the transmission having a shorter input shaft, requiring the pilot bearing to be built into the flywheel itself. One can bolt up a 330 fly wheel to the S54, but I don't know if it's well matched to that engine. Z4M version of the transmission has a long input shaft and can be used with a standard pilot bearing in the crank.

Replaced the shadowline trim on the wife's ZHP. I wonder if there is a market for these with 2 broken clips? Also replaced the vent window bottom rubber trim on the e36.

No it wasn't. I thought about just picking up some other chrome part out pieces and pulling the plastic clips off of it and then re-gluing just to see how long it worked. Then I came to the realization that the old ones were probably 10 years old, so $500 to last 10 years vice $100 for two old pieces that might piss me off after failing again made it worth it.

Maybe if you still had the clips.

I tried reglue-ing the clips several times, using different kinds of super glue, and nothing really worked long term until I took super glue and superglued every single clip all the way along the trim. Finally, that trim stops creeping forward and hasn't broken loose.

I can't believe that worked for you. There's no way it would have been enough to keep mine in place.

Replaced the worn AKG FCAB with Z4M. After the test drive I concluded this was indeed the cause of the clunk on braking.

Also reconnected this lil guy but since the arm is broken it will probably come out again. Anyone know what this is called?

Sorry, I'm new to the ZHP. I see that the Z4M & ZHP bushings are both 66 mm. Is this a bolt-on upgrade - press the bushings into our lollipops? Do you have a part number/vendor source?
Thanks in advance.

I just replaced the whole thing, couldn't be bothered with drilling, cutting and pressing. Got them for $75 each from fcpeuro since they're a mafia affiliate. Part numbers are 311078368621 and 31107836863

Well I drove her today and played in the rain. I got her sideways in a really wide right so I got aggressive with the throttle while just 1/3 opposite lock in the wet! Cornered right at 20mph in 2nd gear, squeezed on throttle just before apex to upset traction then backed off a tad. This followed a tail out resembling a smooth Miley Cyrus twerk. To control her I counter-steered, stayed on the throttle with minor LSD wheel spin and as the car straightened out, kept the rear wheels spinning to come out of an apex with a full chest of newly grown hair. [emoji50][emoji322][emoji322][emoji322]

After doing that I knew I had to treat her like a princess after. Knowing the weather forecast was going to dry out for the week, I decided to clean her in the rain and let the rain help me rinse her dirty self.

After 15 minutes of cleaning the garage floor, the rain cleaned most of the bubbles away!

That's pretty original, to wash a car while raining. I always shammy mine afterwards in the garage anyway so I guess the only drawback is getting wet?

Why can't you believe it? 3M double sided tape is some extremely strong stuff when you use larger pieces of it! Plus, the trim is super light, so you don't even have to worry about the weight pulling it off.

8 hour details... 5 minute car washes...
What am I doing wrong - I can't come even close to accomplish any of these timeframes. lol

A detail takes me almost 2 days and a car wash can easily be 30-50 minutes, depending on how anal I get...

Haha I know what you mean, really depends on how anal you are about it(like you mentioned) but also if you're doing an exterior/interior/both detail. Some people use the word "detail" pretty loosely, so a 30min detail for one person might just be taking a damp rag to the interior of the car

I have had new RTAB's sitting in my garage for at least two years now....I had bought them along with limiters from ECS with plans to install them....hadn't really had an inclination to do them even with owning the MIS tool to do them with. The need for new rear tires once again and the fact that although I love the way the e90 sport wheels looked on it, I really wanted to get the 135s back on lead me to source another set of 8-½" 135s so I could go square. I had all four powder coated in hypersilver, got all new threaded valve stems and stickers, and then sat them aside till the right time.

So, I spent Thursday swapping the bushings out and installing the limiters. I also swapped out the rear pads since they were factory pads that dust a lot (well more than whatever the previous owner had put on the front). Last, I yanked that silly clutch delay valve out.

Yesterday, I had Bulter Tires in Atlanta install the wheels and tires (oh...so the wheels I bought when I picked up the second set of rears came with relatively new Conti DW's so I bought two more and had all 4 installed). They also aligned it! I had to laugh when I saw the alignment before/after specs....seems that no matter how much I tried to put the trailing arm cups back in around the same spot they were in, I was way off!

Second to last photo was taken right after I got the wheels installed....the last is this morning before a thorough wash.
