It's more like the tires are wearing down the plastic nub.
I haven't had time to look into it. It doesn't rub all the time but hit a half decent bump or a dip in the road and it rubs. Also, it depends on the tires too. Different brands are different widths even though the size is the same. I'm running Hankooks in the stock ZHP size

yes of course but not pulled.
my rear 245/35/18 michelin PSS on my 18x8.5" ET38 ARC8's will rub the rear fender lip with a 3mm spacer (so ET35), and will rub the rear plastic nub rob was mentioning without it. i'm running -0.7º camber though, which is a lot more positive than most folks. i wanted to roll the fenders initially but my paint guy refused (it invites rust - and i HATE rust!).

Hopefully yours will give you a head's up like mine did. About once per week it would just grind and then take 2-3 tries to catch.

It's actually surprising that it still feels strong. Recently I have started to do what I'm supposed to do, which is turn key on, wait a few seconds, then start the car. But, I haven't done that for most of the time I've had it, so it's a crap shoot when it'll fail. At least I'm making its last who-knows-how-many-(thousand)-miles easier on it. :)

been a while. hope you guys are doing well. my starter also died recently. had an oil change scheduled and got a text from the shop owner saying the car was dead, no response. after a day's worth of diags the starter was the culprit. $100 trip turned into $1300. not a happy camper.
on topic: ordered a set of PSS's today. having them put in on Tues. finally moving on from the Hankook Ventus Evo 12 V2's. they are a great tire imo, but i need to know what i'm missing with the PSS's.

I experienced this two weeks ago. You'll be learning that you can have good tenacious grip with compliant road comfort. You'll learn you can have a quiet tire even when it's amazing in the rain. You'll learn how progressive these tires let go and come back if you slide the rear at odd times.
There are tires that have just as decent grip. Actually more grip than you really need most of the time but this tire gives you feedback for amazing control.
I'm also learning it can be a no fun tire because it doesn't like letting go easily. So spontaneous purposeful slides unless you really force it but then that's usually not a wise thing to do. I do miss lower grip tires to play with the tail more and knowing that every drift isn't goes to cost me $50. Haha

Currently, I wait for the ABS and BRAKE lights to go out before I start the car.

Is this for the glowplugs? Like a "go for launch" light would be cool.

If you wait for the fuel pump to prime, it takes less time to start the car, therefore less work for the starter. You're not spending that "starter active time" waiting for the fuel pump to prime.

It doesn't have to throw in a couple extra *chiks chiks* before it starts waiting for the fuel... :rofl Idk...I agree. I get in and turn the key and my car starts right up in one or two *chiks chiks* even after sitting for awhile. I do usually pause like BP was saying, but sometimes I forget or am in a hurry.

yeah, but the major shock to the starter is when it gets energized. an extra half-second of spinning is not going to be that detrimental.

Extra half a second now... but that extra half a second every time you start the car adds up over the life of the starter.
And besides - moving parts are moving parts. The less they have to move, the better. This is also the reason I don't like to let my engine idle for more than a minute at a time - it's unnecessary wear.

if you really want to get nitty and gritty about it, we can start talking about voltage and how an older or sub-par battery negatively affects the starter... but man, there comes a point where you have to live your life and just replace the dang starter if it fails. ;)
i definitely don't take an "ain't care" attitude towards the car, but there is a balance between OCD and taking care of your mechanical stuff. :cheers

The starter on the vehicle having start-stop is completely different to normal starters... They are much more durable due to their hardware so can't really compare the two...

Daniel, I can tell you the start stop feature will annoy you within the first 5 min of using it. When we had the F30 the starting procedure was hit the start button then hit off auto start/stop button. I don't know if BMW is still doing it but for a while they were offering a 1 time programming the feature to off by default for new car owners

Well when it comes to having to pay a good chunk of change to someone else to replace the starter, I'd like to get as much out of it as I possibly can. That is not a job I would want to tackle. When it comes to labor costs, every bit helps in prolonging the life of a part. That is why I rev match every shift, so I don't have to get a clutch sooner than I need to, because that is a big job as well.

I shut it off when I'm done driving the car, and don't turn it on unless I know I'm about to immediately start driving. I don't sit there in my car on my phone while it's just idling away - that's pointless. I don't let it run while I'm outside of the car doing other things like some people I know do... my neighbor will let his car run while he's doing stuff in the garage, or while he runs inside "for a few minutes" and ends up coming back 15 minutes later.
I just get in and drive... My philosophy is "if it's gonna break, it's gonna break"
Easy to say when you have multiple cars you can drive. If something breaks on my car, I'm out until it's repaired. I've got too much shit I need to do to be out of a car --- ain't nobody got time fo' dat.

I quite like the start/stop feature on the loaners I get, especially for all those times I'm stuck at the numerous unusually-long red lights in my area. It works pretty seamlessly with my driving style.

BP, I can see how you'd like the feature saving precious seconds of wear and tear but as soon as your sitting in traffic with the start stop feature and the air conditioner starts blowing hot air, you'll be turning that shit off even though it restarts it's itself after a time

Not the same thing. When I drive a car that doesn't belong to me, I treat it better than my own.
Not caring about whether the engine starts and stops all the time using a feature the car was designed to use is hardly neglect.

A while ago I used some special 3M interior glue spray on my driver-side A&B, and passenger side C pillar. Finally gave in because the C pillar fabric was fluttering in my rearview mirror. Two months later, the drivers-side C and passenger B are starting to do it. sigh.
The real issue is that BMW used just enough fabric to cover what you see, not enough to wrap around , and that's why it gets loose.

My plan when I bought the ZHP was to drive it until I can afford a Mustang, then bye bye ZHP. But I don't know if that is the plan anymore, because I love the ZHP!
I have just lusted over Mustangs for probably 10 years now, and as soon as I can afford one I'm going straight to the dealer!

My friend with the body shop was finally able to paint my rear bumper, my new replacement front bumper from Khoalty, and a new left rear door handle. The rear bumper had clear coat fade, and the front bumper had very light damage that could have been fixed, but for the price it made more sense to buy a new one. We spent a few hours tonight getting everything re-installed.

How was the fit and quality on the bumper from Khaolty? Need to replace the rear one on my ZHP sometime.....
The fit is excellent on the Khoalty front bumper. This is the second aftermarket ZHP front bumper I have purchased this year (other one was for the first '04 ZHP I purchased in January), and both of them fit and feel exactly like the factory original equipment bumper. I have no hesitation buying one if needed.
Now as far as the rear bumpers go, there aren't as many reviews for them but I seem to recall hearing the aftermarket rear bumpers may not be of the best fitment. Don't hold me to that however, as I may be mistaken.

I checked the tires on the ZHP. The front ones are at 6/32 while the rear ones have 8/32. The fronts came with the car, so I can't tell how many miles are on them. I know for sure the rear ones have 3,100 miles. Conti DW set of 4, staggered.
All are wearing out evenly.

So my Vanos is making noise I think/hope so it's time to complete my overhaul on the ZHP in the next month or so. My clutch is also showing signs of going (chattering when starting out at times) so I decided to go a bit overboard...... If you guys think I should do anything else while I am in there feel free to give your input.
Ordered from ECS:
-OEM DISA
-New NKG Spark Plugs
-OEM Valve Cover gasket (already did it once by I need to do VANOS now)
-Dr. Vanos unit
-Vanos Oil line
-OEM T-Stat housing
Parts going in that I have on the shelf
-Stewart Water Pump
-Bimmerbrakes equal length headers
-all new shifter bushings and OEM selector rod
Ordered from Active Autowerke:
-SuperCharger Level 2 kit
All I need to do is figure out a clutch/flywheel setup!

I'd rebuild your DIDA with the GAS unit cheaper and redesigned with 5 year guarantee. In prep for SC, replace fuel filter and belt tensioner. Might want to think about an oil catch can too. If you haven't had your exhaust off before, my want to get those bolts. And get new manifold studs & nuts for the headers... All of my studs came out just like everyone else

Do your oil filter housing gasket at the same time. A lot easier to do the vanos line IMO if you just pull it with the whole oil filter housing

And thoroughly cleaned the interior. And realized how bad my OEM floor mats have gotten. I think only one mat has the velcro backing on it, the rest slide around and look awful. I guess its time to finally order a fresh set.

I had started the projector retrofit from The Retrofit Source over a month ago, but hit a snag when when the insulation on the wiring in the left headlight completely disentigrated, taking out the ballast and ignitor. I got a great deal on a used drivers headlight assembly a while back, and since I just got the car back after a month of waiting for the bumpers to be painted, I took the time to swap it in.

Out with the broke and in with the new. Wife texted me yesterday saying the ZHP wouldn't start. It ran and sputtered twice but was now just turning over. Thankfully it happened at home and she hopped in the E36 and carried on. I wanted to do pump, filter, plugs and maybe coil packs in July, but I got tied up in my advancement to Chief for Reserves. Had to push everything to October but mother-BMW caught up to me. 129,200 on the original pump. I just hope nothing else breaks..... I ordered one from my local favorite Indy shop (Harrison Motorsports) and got it within an hour. VDO brand. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160808/b395ac836aa0853cd3a672035e8d5a53.jpg

A couple small things.
1) Changed out my left window switch unit as the "all up/all down" broke.
2) Car hood unfortunately got caught by a sprinkler and the water out here is very hard. It left awful water spots and a big coating that would not come off. Fortunately I found out about a water spot remover (I live with 10-15 minutes of a Chemical Guys showroom) so I tried it and it worked great! Whew! (That white spot in the pic is just a reflection, it's not on the hood).
3) My daily driver gas mileage (mostly short trips) dropped from 16.X to 15.7 MPG when I got my Gruppe M Intake. BUT, just one highway trip of 200 miles each way (including some stop and go traffic) the avg. MPG JUMPED to 18.9, and even peaked at 19 for a sec. The Gruppe M likes freeways.

As for the vehicles, I ordered a couple of small cosmetic mods for the X3, and I'm feverishly hunting for a Dinan X-pipe for the M3 as they're discontinued from Dinan... Damn California and their smog laws... Ruining it for the rest of us... :rofl

Why is your mileage so low? I get around 26 mpg in a mixed country/highway setting.

I just got an email from ECS today and saw that connector. As far as my gas mileage, pretty common for verts, especially city ones with short trips. They are heavier, I drive with a lead foot, lots of traffic. It gets aired out on the weekends with some freeway driving, but that is spirited so it doesn't help gas mileage either. :biggrin

OK. i have been thinking about converting my set of ARC-8s into a staggered setup, but that seems too aggressive for me. i will probably go with the 18x9 ET42, which i will probably rub with. running 18x8.5 ET38 square now.

hmm. Ive been toying with the idea of having 3mm milled off the 18x9.5 to make it et38. That way I could run a proper 255 in the rear.

would 255's really fit at that point? how much negative camber are you running? and how much have you rolled the rear fenders? (a pic would be great)
i'm concerned about rolling too much as i don't want to introduce corrosion issues. my paint guy refused to roll them for me when i had the car repainted.

Install only took around 10mins, my MOMO was a pretty straight forward removal, just had to remove the wheel which was held on by 6 hex screws, then remove the attachment piece and all that is is a single torqued bolt. Took my newly wrapped wheel and placed it on, hooked the wires back up and torqued the bolt back in. Only difficult part of install was putting the airbag back in :thumbup

They were sending them to me. But I just started medical school and that's got me too busy to really work on this stuff at the moment. Maybe when I finish the anatomy block (end of September) I'll be able to do some of these side projects. The good news however is that by then I may have a means of flashing the DME over OBDII, so I'd only really need the donor cluster to modify rather than needing your DME as well.

MS45 is RSA protected, but the RSA signature is only checked once after flashing over OBDII, so flashing it on the bench via BDM allowed one to bypass that check (since the DME didn't know it was reflashed).
To flash over OBDII, one needs a valid RSA signature. Thankfully, the MS45 only has a 512-bit key, which is factorable in a relatively short amount of time with modern processors (my somewhat outdated Xeon system should be able to get the key in 1-2 weeks, and I've had that PC crunching numbers for about a week now).

Your LCM reads over 400k or your instrument cluster? Cluster will go to 1 million KMs. Two cars I worked on (ELCID and another guy on e46fanatics) had their LCMs stuck at 300k, so when we tried to sync a new cluster, it read 186k miles with no tamper dot.

These pictures are why I have given up on making my car any nicer until I find a daily again. Crossing both metro areas with a 28 mile commute each way beats the piss out of my ZHP :(

That is correct it's my $2600 daily butttt ever since I have started pouring money into it. Full front end respray, rust repair and fixing the front bumper plus coilovers, the BBK, all of the BMW performance parts I have added and supercharger it has become more of a 2nd useless I don't want to drive it much vehicle like my M3.

I have to do Alexandre's rear wheel bearing. I have the BMW bearing tool kit and a long ass breaker bar. I wonder how this east coast car will be to replace it. [emoji51]

Yeah 1 owner all service records 119k miles. Can't beat it!
Ordered the Sirius module (P/N 65120439437) to plug into my I-Bus for satellite radio through my Business radio. Can't wait to install it!
I looked at all the fancy radios (Dynavin, AVIN, Eonon), but they didn't have the one thing I wanted--Sirius XM. So after a little research, I found out they sell a BMW module that plugs into the CD changer wiring I-Bus. Everything is done in the trunk, without having to pull the radio. The only other piece I need is an antenna. Found this thread (http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51917&highlight=sirius+install+kit) where the guy simply velcroed the Sirius unit to the Bluetooth unit, so no need for a $50 mounting bracket.
I'm so psyched!

Is there still a need to add an Antenna?

Yes, you need an antenna with a line of sight to the sky. I got a $16 one off of Amazon.

She.... no she did not. I work in the car industry and it was a trade in.
Tried to change the radiator but stripped the self tapping Torx screw head which bolts the expansion tank plate to the radiator :crying
Bought a bolt extractor but it seems like the Torx screw is too small for it... Will take it to a local mechanic and hopefully he can get it out...

Full wash, wax and detailing. The amount of break dust it accumulates over a week period is insane, especially on TiAg style 135s. Washed down with Meguiar's gold finish, dried with chemical guys V07 detailer, and finished with a layer of Turtle Wax. Also removed the 3M stickers from the front and rear roundels, WOW it took a heck of a lot longer than I anticipated lol, that stuff is made to last. 268572685626858

I had them on my e90 330i. The dust was gone. And I didn't notice any side effect on the breaks efficiency. I never track or autoX, BTW. I recommend them.

+1 for Akebono pads. Great performance; probably 95% less dust than OEM. Literal night and day difference between the two. :)

I was about to say, check for other brake pads. BMW's pads are notorious for dust-production.

True for older BMWs...the 2014 X1 I had brake dust was never an issue, so they must have reformulated their pads recently. My E46 and E39 on the other hand.....makes me wonder if the engineer who designed the brake pad owned stock in wheel cleaner products!
Dark wheels are another option for brake dust problems but I don't think they're much of a match with the Silbergrau...?

Not a solution. They look dull with all that brake dust. Dull looks cheap, IMO.
I thought I could get around that by painting my 135's a darker grey but it was still obvious that they had brake dust. I've had black wheels very briefly on my E30 before and even that was obvious that there was dust.

I specified a matte finish on my wheels because I prefer it aesthetically to gloss. I clean the wheels regularly; the dark finish just minimizes the effect of dark dust on silver metal. I'm not using this as a cover for neglect. I guarantee you my wheels don't look cheap. But thanks...

Well, got the ZSP home after staying at the doctor for a while (I will update the project thread) so tonight I...
- Replaced the HK amp. Nice to have better bass.
- Replaced fogs that were destroyed
- Installed Rogue upper strut brace
- Buggered up my bluetooth install somehow (may be the phone, could be the crack, dunno)
- Now, time to go out speeding

Back to the Akebono pads, which would you recommend for me? Right now I've got a set of performance break pads(I'll have to check the brand when I get home) and I'm looking for similar performance.
Edit: just remembered that I have Hawk Performance Ceramic pads
