What kind of rack is that, how many bikes can it hold?

Those are Genuine BMW racks. He looks to have the same one I just bought. The touring bike holder! Since he has two of the holders it would hold two bikes! I have just one, so one bike for me!

Dropped the ZHP off to investigate oil leak further. Just had CCV replaced with cold weather version. He mentioned a MOS additive? We shall see. Also rear calipers seemed loose since they clunk when I back out of driveway in the mornings. Lastly, he's gonna install my MFactory LSD...mwahaha

I gave her a bath now that she has ECSTuning kidney grills and installed Umnitza V2's when I replaced the burnt bowls. Yesterday was the first day in 2 months she's seen daylight. And before anyone brings out the judge-stick the parking lot was closed for the day so my temporarily parking in this handicap spot is perfectly acceptable. Lighting is everything daggumit!

Just picked up some Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric AS from TireRack for the 530i. Had them on my past E90 and liked them a lot. They have a $140 rebate for a set of 4 thru Goodyear right now if purchased with a Goodyear credit card.
My ZHP is running Conti DWS put on by PO. Good tire, just the sidewall is too soft and bubbles to easily hitting potholes. I experienced this on past installations.
The X1 is running Bridgestone Driveguards AS RFT. Best AS RFT I've experienced, but definitely on the Touring and not performance side of the equation.

So this is still a work in progress, but... I've am in the process of retrofitting "sport mode" to our cars. Unfortunately it's not exactly simple.
1) Code is present, but a couple switches are turned off. Not a big deal to fix that (especially after I was pointed to a checksum I had not yet known about).
2) The pin is not "connected" on MS45.1 DMEs. Studied the Z4 MS45.0 DME (which has the button from the factory), and soldered the appropriate resistors and capacitors to the DME. (Changes here if curious: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showpost.php?p=16993278&postcount=13)
That was enough to test whether or not the input and code actually works.. and it does (in the attachment, notice that "Sport-taster" is set to "JA")
So I took a quick drive with a rigged wire to trigger the button, and the throttle is actually *much* better. I was pretty surprised at how much more responsive the car felt. Not quite S54 responsiveness, but makes switching between the two cars less jarring.
Now I have to wire up an actual sport button, which I'll use the M3 switch panel for. I'm still waiting on mine to arrive.
Wiring up the switch is easy enough. On an M3, the button shorts to ground when pressed, while the MS45 DME wants to see something between 3.5 to 10k ohms instead. Easy enough to just throw in a resistor inline with the wire.
Getting the LED to light up when the switch is on is harder. The MS45 doesn't actually have an output for the LED signal. Instead, it just changes a byte on the CAN-bus. On the Z4, the electric power steering module reads that CAN byte and triggers the LED. We don't have electric power steering, so that's a no go for the E46. So what I'll have to do is use something like an arduino to read the CAN-bus, and switch the ground to the LED pin when the right byte is broadcast.
All in all I spent quite a bit less money than I would on a shark injector or sprint booster, and I learned a lot in the process. But it's a complex enough mod that it's not as DIYable for everyone else as I had hoped.

Stuff like this is one of the many reasons I wouldn't want a *new new* car...no one has had time to really delve into the intricacies and change them. Mostly because warranty, but also because they are all just THAT much more complicated.

The metal impeller design is actually less reliable, I believe. Those had bearing issues if I recall correctly.
The composite impeller is the final design, and is rock solid.

Personally I'd rather have piece of mind and do the water pump every 60k with a BMW one. Stewart may have a lifetime warranty, but that won't help you when you're stranded on the side of the road far from home. :dunno
I'm not saying they're prone to failure - they're not. But the possibility is there the longer you run it if you don't replace the water pump every so often. Moving parts are moving parts!

I'm not so much worried about the bearing going out since I can hear that and replace relatively quickly in my driveway. My bigger concern is the plastic impeller in a cooling system which routinely heats up to high temperatures. My first e46 overheated and when we pulled the water pump we found a melted plastic impeller. Not sure if the bad impeller caused the overheating or if it was a byproduct of the high temps but I switched to metal design on that and current ZHP ever since. Besides, the plastic impellers have bearings too, right? :dunno

The original design with the plastic impeller was obviously a faulty design. They've changed the design to a metal impeller, which had the bearing issues due to the metal material, probably from it being heavier and stressing the bearing more. The final design with the composite impeller, which is where it has been for the last few years, has proven to be a reliable design.
Not sure why the rest of you are getting metal impeller units as the OE remanufactured - my OE remanufactured unit that I just bought has a composite impeller.

It's a thingamabob for the thingamajig....
Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't know what it is! I'm guessing some kind of coolant valve for the heater core....

That's exactly what it is
What is that?
It's a heater control valve and it stops the flow of coolant to the heater core when not needed. Mine was sticking and blowing hot when the AC was on. It's located on the drivers side inner fender, under the intake tube.

Since we're on the subject of heating:
My air (no AC) blows significantly warmer than outside air sometimes. Is this normal?
I set the central vents to the 3 blue dots. This seems to happen after I drive somewhere, stop and come back in an hour.

Mine does that too. I think its just the air passing through all the ducts and parts that have been heated up while the car has been sitting. I've noticed that in our other vehicles too.

I figured it was just the heat soaking in. I don't remember it being that obvious on my old car.

I like it a lot! Goes well with my interior too. I like having the oil temp gauge instead of the fuel consumption gauge. The LEDs on the tach match the ZHPs redline perfectly. And I have all 4 doors on the warning display
It's a 10 on the cool factor scale (M3 guys are saying NBD)

Finished my sport button retrofit. Got the M3 switch panel installed, wired up the switch to the DME, threw an arduino + can shield onto my CAN-bus to trigger the LED, and everything works perfect. While I was working on the car, I also went ahead and installed my M3 fuel pump baffle.

Thanks guys, most satisfying paint correction I've done. There were three places on the car where the selling dealer's "detail shop" touched up some scratches with touchup paint. Wish I had taken some before pics of that touchup, they were awful. Only thing that made them tolerable is that they were black on black, thus hard to see at 10+ feet. I removed the touchup with some Langka touchup blob remover and hit the scratches with the DA Porter-Cable with some Meguiars m105 with an orange pad. Those scratches are 98% gone. I do have one pic of the trunk that the dealer originally sent me when I was first looking at the car. The large scratch luckily wasn't too deep, that and the other web-like scratches and are evident. It gives one some idea what a proper paint correction can remove:

With my coding and modifications, it's 100% functional (for manual cars).
If you take an M3 cluster and just install it without any mods, this is the result
100% functional with no coding
Tachometer
Oil temp gauge
Fuel gauge
Functional but needs coding to be accurate:
Odometer
Speedometer
Coolant temp gauge
MPG calculations
May need coding
DSC
Alternator light
Oil pressure / level light
Not functional without additional modifications
Oil warmup lights (requires DME software mod, and needs LEDs to be changed if you want accurate redline)
Rear door LEDs for sedans (have to solder LEDs and resistors)
Not functional ever (probably)
Automatic transmission gear display
In addition to the coding and hardware mods, I reset the mileage on the cluster to 0 so that it can load the correct mileage from the LCM

Today I laid the foundation for the PDC system from the module rearwards. Now I just need to run the wiring through the car's interior to the front.
Here's a horribly overexposed shot of the purty rear sensors.

I will need to take the trim off and paint it so it all matches each other. I also need to figure out why my connectors won't fully seat on my sensors despite being keyed correctly. I'd have to really out some force on them for them to clip in...

Over the course of a year the locks were not unlocking. Most notable times is when the temp would change. For example: 60 in the AM and 80 around 2PM. I can lock the car, but often would be unable to unlock the car.
This resulted in me putting the kids in through the windows more than once...

Installed Bilstein B4's all around on Friday along with new mounts in the front, and reinforced mounts in the rear. Got everything back together and realized I had missed the washer between the spring mount and strut bearing in the front, so took it all back apart. Car rides so much better now. Lesson learned about not replacing these when I got the car- one of the OEM rear shocks was totally blown, and one of the front struts had no rebound. Rides so much better now.

Swapped out the passenger side door panel for the M3 panel I have and adding sound deadening while I was in there. The job entailed pulling my panel, swapping armrests so I could retain my cube trim, swapping armrest pads because I want the M3 leather, speakers because I think mine will have had less use than the M3 it came from, and all new foam panel clips.
The job took a little longer than expected (hence why I only got the passenger side done) but the leather is nicer and it has a slightly thicker "thud" sound to the door when I close it. Haven't driven it yet but I am hoping for a bit of reduced road noise from that side.
Did new brakes on my mom's zhp today. Got only the front done. Rear tomorrow.

Washed Ness, then installed Gruppe M intake with a lot of help from William (actually had to dremel some of the c/f to make it fit), and while my BMW Perf Intake was out, noticed a small leak in the upper radiator hose so I replaced that. Agreed. It's what I went with because a) I know the brand and model from personal experience b) the cost was not particularly high and c) they would be close to OEM spec i.e. struck a good balance between performance and comfort, but were also adjustable. I think other Mafia members have similar priorities so they work well for their needs

I think other Mafia members have similar priorities so they work well for their needs
Yup, those are exactly my reasons to get them too... Can't beat the performance they offer for the price...

Nicely done. Initial impressions? I guess you've got to give it a few hundred miles to settle properly.
The rear feels much better, I think because my OE shocks were beyond toast. The front feels about the same, maybe a little stiffer. I set them on ~7/8 from soft.

Their NXT Tech wax is ok, but it does have a small amount of abrasives in it. For a wax/sealant I've come to swear by Blackfire Wet Diamond Sealant:

Goes on and off like a dream, and the shine & beading is second to none!

Recall for passenger airbag sensor done in the Mini. No more dash warnings ! :thumbsup
And I got a free alignment valued at $179. At first, I approved the service. But then I remembered it was done last year, so I cancelled it. They did it anyways, so I explained the situation and paid nothing for it. I was happy with the resolution.

Haven't done much except oil changes and driving the car.
Had the interior detailed, and gave the exterior a quick detail. Not up to my standards, it needs a more intensive detail - maybe this fall when the weather is cool enough to drive the E30 for a few days.
Today I had some time to pull both headlights out and swap out the reflector bowls for a set of clemsone46 refurbished bowls.
I probably spent more time reading incomplete "DIY" threads than the actual process took.
One thing I will note - if your car has the headlight washers, do yourself a favor and stand off to the side when you pull them off. Otherwise you get a full crotch/chest full of washer fluid. ;)
A few photos of the condition of my reflector bowls vs. clemson's bowls, the old faded outer headlight covers vs. the new OE ones.
Looking forward to driving at night without the need to run with my foglights on to be able to see!

One thing I will caution individuals of when you go in to do this - pay close attention to the wire sheathing for the high beam shield actuator.
My car spent it's entire life in Virginia until last year. The wire sheathing for the high beam actuator was brittle and flaking off the wires. If left unattended, it was close to a possible short when I went to actuate the high beams. Some proper heat shrink tubing resolved the issue.

Next up - Z4M CAB's which are rolling around in my trunk waiting for the next oil service...
Oh, also bought a Thule roof rack - needed a way to get a surf board the whopping 1 mile down to the beach for my new hobby!
(taken a week or so ago, before the headlights, and the day before the roof rack arrived) 2 trips with the foam blocks was enough - no need to ruin the roof with scratches!

I worked on both my ZHP and M3 today, specifically on their Intravee II setup. I found the menu in my Intravee where I can manually change my one-touch blink from 2 blinks all the way up to 11 blinks. Not that I would use 11 blinks but I now have that option (without having to code my LCM) to change the amount of blinks I get when I lightly touch my turn signal stalk... :)
For those of you who have Intravee this is how you do it: :thumbsup
You start out from the Setup menu then you go into Extras...

Today Gary showed me where I can have engine temp/outside temp displayed on my navi display thru my Intravee which I found interesting. I also figured out how I can use my fog lights as DRLs while having all other lights in the off position as well as have my PDC display on my navi screen when backing up thanks to my Intravee interface. This device does a lot of pretty cool things! Both cars are now coded with these features :)

Did what should be my last round of maintenance before I start school
Oil pan gasket
New oil filter housing (check valve was broken on the original)
Cold Weather PCV + Updated dipstick tube
Hydraulic tensioner & pulley, idler pulley, AC pulley, and belts
Waterpump, expansion tank, and hoses
M3 engine mounts
M3 transmission mounts
ECS Stainless Brake lines + Motul DOT5.1 fluid
Oil change w/ Castrol 0w-40
Previously had done ZHP control arms, Z4M bushings, E46 M3 RTABs, upper/lower ball joints in the back, brakes + rotors, intake air filter, cabin air filter, and Pilot Sport AS3 Plus tires
Cosmetically this car is still a little rough around the edges, but mechanically it should be sound.

https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8448/28349106011_c88d7504f8_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/Kc7zxR)
Compared to my DW and DWS, I feel like my butt dyno lateral grip is similar. If the PSS is just a bit better, it doesn't make a difference in my grin when I hit apex at max velocity. What I do feel is a nicely controlled progressive slide when I instruct the LSD to make the rear shoes do the moonwalk. The tires just seem to feel more predictable under that scenario so it lets loose smoother and gains traction smoothly too. The ride is quieter and softer feeling which I really love. I've got to stop sliding and start gripping more so I can feel the side to side turn in next. I'll have the week to play around since it's dry!
Previous rubber was really low from not changing my RTABs in time. I then had to make a risky move and swap right to left tires (inside to outside) and set rear camber to max so I could use my DWS up more while I searched for replacement rubber:
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160720/5d9b9677961da99c16cab9c30d66a77c.jpg
This rear tire configuration created easy drift in the wet and tenacious "slicks" grip in the dry. So two totally opposite spectrums of handling which yielded a lot of fun but slightly dangerous if I wasn't paying attention. Now it's all fixed so I shouldn't be able to initiate a drift in 6th gear at 60mph in a moderate corner. LOL

It is probably just the way the different angles, light, and reflections are making my photos come out. It is definitely the same all the way around. Interesting though, the tint that was removed was actually gauging 33% in the front windows and 27% in the back windows, I always though it was the same all the way around. the CTX-40 gauges around 35% with the factory glass.

Its a AW/Sand non sport pack but it has HK, premium and fogs. It already comes with snows on the 16's which is awesome! The car was a TX, UT and CA car until 2013 when it was brought to MN so it is SUPER clean aside from a few spots on the pillars I am going to fix.
Plans for the summer are:
Put 135's on it
H&R Cup kit or spring/shock combo
Mtech II front bumper
Make sure maintenance is all good to go for winter
Swap in ZHP sand front sport seats
PDR a few things and a bit of minor rust repair on the pillars
Then I will find a NB interior, black dash and carpet for my ZHP and some silver cube trim :)

I live in the metro area and the roads get plowed very well and I am not concerned. I have driven really low cars in the winter and it's not like I am slamming it. It'll be an inch and a half tops with the cup kit.
Bimmian toys: painted keyhole cover and Xenesis "Xenon match" H7 bulbs for daytime running.
The keyhole cover pops in very easily (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?3108-ZHP-Mafia-BMW-330i-Official-Keyhole-delete-DIY-doityourself) (Thanks, Dane). The color, as with the painted grille, is a bit whiter than the other paint on the car, but it's not something anyone would notice.
The stock halogen bulbs in the daytime running position were driving me crazy: I have the factory HID system otherwise. I can't fit LED or most other replacements to the DRL position in my coupe. The Xenesis does pull the apparent color temp up a bit. We'll have to see how they last. Turns out one bulb was failing anyhow.

Yesterday was spent replacing all three differential bushings on '04 ZHP I bought recently. The first time I drove the car I knew they needed replacing, as I felt a thump every time I would shift. After inspecting them, I would say the rear one was shot after 150k miles...

That's one dirty differential.

All finished.

The car is at my friend's body shop. The bumper is off because it is being resprayed due to some paint fading on the top section. I have a new front bumper there waiting to be painted also.
I've done this job on another E46 before at my house while on jackstands. I think it took me a full weekend to complete. It took me around 7 hours yesterday...having access to a lift helps tremendously. I rented the tools from a member on E46 fanatics, and it made that part of the job super easy.

Pulled the whole left side of the engine apart to clean the idle control valve to solve rough engine stumbling when cold. While I have the whole intake manifold apart I cleaned the throttle bodies as best as I could and did the same with the interior of the intake plenum. To give myself room I need to pull the cabin filter housing off as well as the little plastic wall that separates the brake vacuum and DME to the rest of the engine bay.

This is something I did with my ZHP, not for it: we took a victory dance together in the driveway after it was revealed that the dent my wife put in my air dam when she drove it up onto a curb, backed off, panicked, put it back in first and repeated... that dent popped itself out! Some scratches to the bottom of the air dam, but still... :-)

I would highly recommend the aukey car charger. It has enough output to charge two devices at the same time and low profile enough so that you can shut the cover of the ashtray while the charger remains plugged.

You should probably buy one with QuickCharge 2.0 or 3.0 capability if you have a phone that supports it. A phone that supports it charges sooooo slowly with a lowly 2.x Amp charger.

Got my AC system properly evacuated and re-filled/recharged with R-134a. Can't say that it is any cooler now but the hissing sound that I would hear constantly when the AC was on, is completely gone now and the compressor seems to run a lot smoother. Earlier I could feel the compressor cycling very frequently and feel a noticeable 'jerk' every time it would turn on. $150 cash.

These are 17x9 et30 with 245/40/17 squared.
The 18s are the more traditional 18x9.5 et35 & 18x8.5 et38
Gonna be running 245/35/18 & 235/40/18

My ARC-8's are coming in tomorrow, same sizes! I got Hyper Silver (my car is Sapphire Black Metallic) but man I'm loving the satin black you have.
