View Full Version : What did you do for your ZHP/ BMW / MINI today? #2

to me, a SC is a way better option that an S54 swap - exponentially less work, easily reversible, cheaper, same or more power. win/win/win in my book. i personally have been thinking about both kits i mentioned, i like the packaging of the ESS kit better.
Don't forget: cheaper and less work to maintain. :thumbsup
dude, you remind me of how i used to be with changing cars all of the time. :) i thought you were all set to DD the ZHP? why not challenge yourself to keep it for another year?
:cheers
Man... I couldn't fathom not keeping a car for a few years. The financial loss to buy one and sell it at a loss would keep me up at night. lol

Didn't you just get a lot work done on it?
Yes a separate thread would be ideal...

Yes I did and it is one of my favorite all time cars honestly but the next step for me is to install my headers and get an LSD and ESS TS2+. But I will have 3 cars when I pickup the Land Crusier and I don't want to get into that again.
dude, you remind me of how i used to be with changing cars all of the time. :) i thought you were all set to DD the ZHP? why not challenge yourself to keep it for another year?
:cheers
The plan was to DD it but it is now WAY to nice to bring myself to winter drive so now the Land Crusier is coming into play. I still drive the ZHP almost every day and will plan to but like I said earlier it comes down to the 3 car thing....
Hmm...you have a pretty solid garage IMO. M3 and the Land Cruiser. That'd be good for me as it's basically a "bigger" version of mine now.
That said, the ZHP is a nice middleground between the two. Miles/usage/maintenance wise.
Also, enabling you:

I agree and it doesn't cost me anything to own. No loan, cheap insurance, ect. I just hate having 3 cars to move around and that money just sitting around. I feel my car is above his budget with all of the recent maintenance and things that have been done to it.

Radiator
Lower Radiator Hose
Power Steering Return Hose
Coolant tank
and last but not least

Its so good! =D
Correct. It is the euro shifter which can be bough alone.
However do purchase the clip and locking ring at the bottom that is used to secure the rod.
It is not a huge drastic change but an improvement over stock especially in 3rd and 4th gear. Should have been like that from the factory for the zhp.
I have been reading and found threads where it's a simple swap and threads where you have to remove the exhaust system.

If you wanna do it properly, you have to remove the whole exhaust system. I have seen some where you hack/pick the shifter out. Your car, your call.

I did the UCC SSK and DSSR without removing the exhaust but it was a PITA. UUC SSK requires you to remove the shifter carrier and modify it. That's what makes it so difficult... plus one of the carrier pins was frozen... But out of all my mods, it's my favorite:)

Installed Bimmian cell phone mounts in both my zhp and X3 today. They look really nice and are built really well but I wish that the fit was a little better.
For the zhp I had to do a little bending of the mount bracket to get a really good fit and have it not interfere with the dash trim. On the X3 I had to do the same but the trim around the radio is still a little off because the bracket is pushing it forward.

Consider yourself lucky you even got it to look so good! I effed around with mine for about half an hour trying to get it to sit flush and the radio trim still pokes out a bit. Yours actually looks perfect, as though the bracket wasn't even there...

Well my original ones were rubber like. The new ones were foam like. They seemed to fit in the space but I couldn't press the lenses back on because the foam seemed to be too thick. Never was able to put the new gaskets in.

Yeah, I noticed the new ones to be foam like as well. There was a little bit more resistance while putting the lens back but I was able to get all the clips to go 'click'. Did you make sure to push the gasket all the way within the groove?

Yeah I hope so too. I suspect the previous owner hit some crazy potholes on the passenger side - hence my mushrooming was happening on that side as well as an annoying rattle seems to be coming from the wheel bearing/hub assembly from the same side.
I bought my M3 strut brace on E46F - here is one on sale now for $225 shipped with all the hardware.

Yeah, I'm thankful where I live isn't too potholed. I can see how the thin strut tower metal could be bent by a few good impacts.
Nice spot on the strut brace. I'm too stingy to shell out $225 for that when I've seen others sell for ~$150+ and I still might have to get those $10 nuts you mentioned. Also, ECS has the non-M strut brace (which I believe is exactly the same as the M one except it's chrome rather than black) for about $265 and that drops when it's on sale.

Gave it some TLC today, fixed the shield over the fuel filter, stitched together the cracked lower lip of my front bumper, and fixed a loose fender liner. Also gave it an oil change with M1 and a Mann filter.
Lurking outside the shop.

Your ZHP is unbelievably pretty, Chris. That front and respray and those wheels really set it off. Such a classy color - you'd be crazy to sell it, IMO!
I am getting clear film installed tomorrow on the whole hood, fenders and front bumper tomorrow. Needless to say I am keeping it.
Next thing on the to-do list is a LSD followed by a TS2+ and install the headers I have had waiting in the garage.

Brought the ZHP in for the passenger airbag recall yesterday, and they did the VCG, installed new plugs and the fuel filter. I also purchased a new key that they coded. They were able to reset the airbag light that the previous owner tripped when he was fiddling with the broken window regulator. Unfortunately, when I returned to pick it up this evening, I found that the old remote (the only other key) no longer unlocks anything via the buttons. Key still works. I didn't get a chance to check it out until after all the service managers had left, and no one else could help.

I'd been given a 2016 328XI slushbox as a loaner. Even with Sport mode selected, the sloppy handling and wimpy steering made me feel like I was driving a comfortable padded cell. Definitely not liking the direction they're going with the newer models.

Along with coding the key, there is a sequence of steps you need to do to make sure both keys work... I don't remember the exact procedure but a quick search returned this and it seems similar to what I had to do-

Any transmission is someone's choice and preference. Each one excels somewhere.
A DCT in an E90 is like a video game. It's brutally fast and makes you swear on every gear change because it's so fast and there is no pause in between shifts to recover your emotion and senses. It's just a constant V8 roar crawling down your spinal column reverberating into your heart that makes you fall in love and commit automobile adultery. Oh gawd......I need a time out......

Just picked the ZHP up from the shop, she's now sporting a 3.46 open diff with polyurethane bushings! In addition to that new rotors, pads and brake fluid flush. Also got my nav fixed which went out last week, apparently the AC got so cold condensation dripped on it and shorted it out. Torque is definitely more noticeable now. However with the good comes the bad. A few months ago my car was illegally towed and I'm just now finding out that during that they bent both rear tweezer arms. Car was parked facing forward when they illegally towed it from behind and I guess they pulled the car by the tweezer arms because both are bent backwards :facepalm.

This must be a common design flaw with the nav system being under the vent. I notice that if I use the AC much my screen is apt to flicker here and there. I suspected it was condensation. How did you end up repairing it when it went out?
I wonder if putting some kind of layer (of something waterproof) on the top of the nav system will protect it from dripping water.
Hm, Does the nav system have vents on top of it for heat dissipation?

My Indy took it to their guy that does radios and such and he fixed it for $150. They also put something on top of the nav like you were saying to catch any future condensation. Although my right side speakers are still not working so I'm wondering if it is related to the AC condensation.

If you seriously want to, try to get it to me sometime within the next month and a half. I start med school at the beginning of August, and I won't have as much time to deal with car stuff.
Also, you'd have to send me the DME if you want the oil warmup lights to work (unless between now and then I figure out how to implement the software mod over OBD rather than having to use a BDM flasher)

Any chance you could ask them what they used?

If you seriously want to, try to get it to me sometime within the next month and a half. I start med school at the beginning of August, and I won't have as much time to deal with car stuff.
Also, you'd have to send me the DME if you want the oil warmup lights to work (unless between now and then I figure out how to implement the software mod over OBD rather than having to use a BDM flasher)
First, congrats on med school! No easy feat. I'm trying to go as well. Where are you headed, if you don't mind me asking.

I owned a second house for a while that had an insulated garage door, and a small wall-mount AC unit built-in. No such luxury at my present house. By the end of the month (or maybe by this weekend), the overnight temperature in the garage will hover around 100, all summer long. It's great at retaining heat.

Finally got my ZHP's ball joints and bushings sorted out, and got an alignment. Unfortunately, they're not able to get the passenger side rear camber in spec (-1.5º instead of -2º). Probably a slightly bent control arm or something. I'll have to deal with that at some point, but in the mean time being half a degree off on camber shouldn't have a negative impact on tire wear at least. Took the car for a long drive and it felt fine for the most part.
Also since this was my first long drive with the car since doing the M3 gauge mods, I decided to take a picture of how it looks all warmed up

Yes it was a bitch retrofitting it to my ZHP. Not sure if the boot retrofit was worth it since it looks bulged, but I'm going to give it time to see if I want to spend another $60 or so on a new one...

Especially in a 100° garage. Got everything out. Have get the oil pan to the machine shop and get the crossmember media blasted so I can weld in the motor mount reinforcements. Oil pump is next. Swapping it out for an Achilles Motorsport upgrade.

Figured out why my driver side high beam shutter wasn't working. A connector was unplugged. Plugged it into the headlamp and the high beam worked great! Success!
During testing, however, my passenger side high beam shutter began to stick open. I can only close it by smacking the hood or the headlamp housing now. Ugh. What a pain in the ass.

I have one too. The reason the M5 boot bothers is me because its a different material than the rest of the leather in my car. My door panels, seats, and steering wheel are Montana leather, so having a smooth leather or an advantage boot would drive me nuts. lol
Thanks for the offer.

This boot comes attached to the M5 shift knob. You can't buy it separately...
I may consider getting rid of it. Interested?

My car:
Went to go pick it up from the mechanic after I had the brakes bled and the side bolster valve replaced in the passenger side, but now the pump isn't functioning. Left it with the mechanic for diagnosis.
My father's ZHP:
Dremeled down the window switches so that they could actuate one touch close for the rear windows.
Coded in one touch close rear windows using PA Soft
Reprogrammed the temperature gauge for more accurate readings using PA Soft
The E39 540i:
Replaced the windshield washer fluid level sensor and grommet
Attempted to get errant airbag light to go off by fiddling with the passenger side wiring harness, but no luck. I think I'll have to look into it with PA Soft, if that's an option
Purchased:
E46 M3 engine and transmission mounts for my car
Headlight cover for passenger side xenon bulbs for my car
Cabin air filters for the 540i

There doesn't seem to be a DIY but Vas has some good tips in this thread:

Also, there are some descent YouTube videos out there too
If anything send me a pm about the diy for the oil pan gasket. I'm getting ready to tackle another one

Sorry, I missed this post... I have 141K on it so far. Everything is still in excellent shape. My motor mounts are still perfect and the lower control arms are also in excellent shape. Very surprised about these two... Tie rods are also fine.

It's pretty strait forward. When you unbolt the pan, there are two bolts hidden up inside the bell housing and there are a couple more in the back that are kinda hidden or they seem like they wouldn't hold the oil pan on but they do...

It looked pretty bad but I think it's been leaking for some time. Sometimes a VCG or OFHG will leak down the side of the block and look like and oil pan leak but I already did those two a while ago.
