Thanks for all the info, Bruce. Seems like work, and I'm nervous about cutting my end of the exhaust, but it would set me up for aftermarket 330 exhausts in the future. Def going to have to talk with Kyle about this.

Thanks Rob. I'm keeping dibs until I make a decision.

Love all the info. Thanks. My father in-law can weld, so this may be a go.

Yes. Just ordered ZHP knob plus new boot from leatherz. Don't want to damage the one coming out in case someone wants the whole shebang. I am totally done with the e82 knob. Call it my OCD but it is just too angular for me and doesn't feel right.

@ niart960 - Excellent work. Thanks for sharing your recipe.

@ David - Thanks mang.

@ Jon - Yep. Part of my excitement is just having a new knob. The other one was cutting my hand. I haven't driven zhp in 7 days and won't know performance wise how I'm gonna like it until I drive. I really love the way it looks though. I was able to trim and retain the boot too. Looks pretty good.

First hand wash and dry since probably before Xmas. Wow, she cleans up nice. Clay bar/polish/wax in a few more weeks. Washed my wife's e91 first... But you know you have a special car when its sitting off to the side in winter mode, covered in salt and road grime, wearing Style 44's and two kids in a Lincoln LS driving by stop and say to me, looking at my car,
"Man, that is a sweet BMW, what model is that?"
"Thanks, its a ZHP."
"Oh... what's that?"
"Oh, nothing special... something between a 330 and an M3"

Newjack came up and hung out with my grandfather and I. I replaced the CCV, manifold gaskets and the engine harness! Next up is to work the gas pedal into the harness and then swap the locks and the EWS.

Earlier today I attempted to replace my control arms and tierods as well as my suspension and it just went sour. No chance of me being able to do this in the street and with out the special tools. Oh well time to pony up and get it done for piece of mind. :(

I'm just tired and really don't have the time or energy to tackle the job and I'm in a position to just pay to have it road worthy again. Right now I've been on my back all day underneath trying to undo the necessary bolts to remove the arms. The inner joint is awkard to reach with conventional tools and I couldn't separate it. It would make more sense to have it done so it can be done before the meet.

BMWs tended to today by a dent less repair guy, he came to the house and worked on the cars while I left. Thought it better that I not watch the secret sauce being made. I was seeing 1 or 2 dings per car, this guy's inspection made me feel like our cars were on the verge of being totaled, he spotted more dings than I ever saw, think it was about 15 dings in total. Happy to report that all dings are gone, he spent over 3-1/2 hours here, I can only see slight evidence remaining of one ding on my car, it was a big one with some signs of a crease and he forewarned me that it would be a tough one to completely make disappear. His service was convenient, quick, reasonable price, and the cars look great, I'm happy.

It's my RTAB on that side, after doing research and watching a few YouTube video's, I'm certain of it. The rear end has had this "loose" feeling for sometime, I should have known something bad would come of it...

As long as you're doing RTABs, get limiters too.

For reference and others in need, Meyle sells heavy duty RTABs along with limiters as a kit. See OEMbimmerparts.

Vorshlag sells limiters separately or paired with MZ4 RTABs, which are an updated split-case design and are what BMW sells nowadays for the e46 M3. They fit non-M E46.

And to save a few bucks you can get the limiters alone from Ireland Engineering for $30.

Vorshlag's site explains the reasoning behind the limiters.

I ended up going with AKG Black RTAB's, according to their site, limiters are not needed with them... Perhaps they are wider/thicker than OEM? They'll be here tomorrow!!

Reset factory LCM coding to diagnose an issue I was having with one of my running lights. One of the bulbs wasn't illuminating, and that spot still didn't illuminate even when another bulb was placed in that spot. I was messing with PA Soft and that is what must've caused it.

Reset factory defaults and recoded all my personalized settings. Now it's all good in the hood.

Out of storage today! Took it for a little drive around town.

I do have to diagnose though, leaking coolant I am almost 100% sure from the tank and almost 90% from the sensor at the bottom of the tank. Also, noticed some smoke coming from the rear of the engine, passenger side. Oil leaking onto the exhaust manifold. Odd though because The valve cover gasket I changed last summer. Will look it all over in the coming week.

Had a great Easter with our family and the in-laws, then got home around 4. Watched the Caps play to a 3-3 tie and thought wouldn't waste anymore time, didn't want to give them a chance to let me down. Decided about 5:30 to finally start on those ceramic pads for the X5. Under warranty, the dealer replaced front rotors & pads and back pads about 1K miles ago but declined to install my ceramic pads when I offered them. They said if I made them put non-OEM parts on the X5 it would void the warranty, so rather than fight them I told them to just install their parts and I knew I'd change the pads to ceramics myself. Finished around 7, took it out to bed the pads, and with my full belly of Easter dinner I damn near made myself sick cause those new pads grabbed so well.

Think I'm set for a while maintenance-wise on the fleet, it actually feels kind of good to not have a car maintenance need hanging over my head. I plan to do some PM with a cooling system refresh on my mine and the wife's car over the next few months but its no rush for now. Mine has 74K miles so its about that time, hers only has 45K miles but its coming up on 9 years old so I want to do it too.

Yes, just the pads, figured with new rotors in the front & the front doing the majority of the stopping, it was okay. Time will tell. If it doesn't work out, then I'll probably buy slotted & drilled rotors from Ray (Smileyz), he always gives me a great deal. I have his set up on 2 of the ZHPs, over 30k miles & 2 years on my wife's brakes, pads are still very good, rotors are not rusting on the top hats, no grooves or edge lips on the rotors, braking performance is great. Less than 10K miles on the other set which has been on 2 different cars (John who bought the TIAG ZHP last Sept didn't want that set up because the calipers were painted, he preferred OEM so swapped everything to my car).

Yesterday I was back, elbows deep, in Lucy's front end. After last week's "fixing" of the power steering leak, she still had a small puddle of ATF under her this past Friday. After serious scrutiny I found a rub mark on the hose from the reservoir to the hose under the radiator (fig 11). Looks like it was from my old air box. When I squeezed the hose around the rub mark, ATF purged out. I also found another rub mark on the lower pressure hose assembly (fig 3) from it rubbing on the sway bar. When squeezed, ATF did not purge. But I'm saying f'it and I'm ordering all new hoses.

I have a big question:

The pressure hose assembly, fig 3, is obviously very long. And hard to tell from the diagram, but easy to see on the car, doesn't look like it needs to be so long.
1. Does it need to be so long and why?
2. Does anyone make a shorter connection hose?

^I believe it's so long to allow for some cooling of the PS fluid, before it recirculates back into the pump and then into your steering rack. They are known to leak and can be very pricey. I just RTV'ed mine on the old car because it was just a slight seep. I sold it before I had to replace it.

EDIT: Maybe not, because #10 is supposed to be for cooling. Not sure why its so long

Dropped my car off at my mechanic this morning for a state inspection. Hopefully it will come back with a good bill of health.

I'm sure somebody knows where to download a copy of the Western regiod Nav disc for a Mk4 system... picking up the 740 later today and need a disc...thanks in advance to whoever knows where to find a copy of it!

I have one you can have but won't work in that E38 unless it was retrofitted with MkIV Nav. ebay seller sent me 2 of em. Have yet to load it to see if it works tho. Guy sells 'em for $15. Anyone else PM me if you want the seller's ebay name.

I will when he gets back to me. It's $475.00 without the rust spot (4 clear coat area's, 1 small ding in vertical rear lid, and front bumper re-do). I told him to call me with the rust spot estimate added to the total.

Chris-TK Harris (something like that) on E46fanatics had both the TSE3 and Highline tuning exhaust. IIRC he said he preferred the tone of the Highline to that of the TSE3, but the Highline droned a ton. I'll see if I can find it in a post, but it may have been via PM 3-4 years ago. I have it. It's by far one of the loudest exhausts for a non-M. It has a bit of drone though in my auto which can get a bit tiring after a while, mostly when driving on surface streets at about 30 mph or so around 2200 rpm.

Here is the thread:

He posted more later when he had the TSE3 too but I can't find it. Actually- maybe he didn't have a TSE3 and someone else had both. I'm confusing myself. Anyway- here's the thread.

I hear the Highline exhaust does drone a bit.

I did a muffler delete for like a week.. It was cool for like the first two days. After that, I was ready to go back to my super quiet Dinan exhaust. Which is what I did on the 7th day.

IMO. Just try a muffler delete, and see if you can handle the drone of your car or not. It only takes like 25 minutes to remove the rear muffler..

I put my summers on and replaced my warped front rotors with new Zimmerman drilled. I was in a jam since I was going to just get my warped rotors machined but to my new knowledge the machine can't machine a slotted rotor. Only blanks and parallel drilled rotors. One side was 3 thousandths of an inch off but the other side was 6 thousandths of an inch off. One hair follicle is 3 so our cars are very sensitive to even the slightest "offness". SO far so good with the Zimmy's. I got them at $120/piece...is that a decent deal for getting something within 2 hours?

Ry - you're only seeing a small portion of it, that entire wall is covered, I glanced over it this past weekend, Stuart's collection is very impressive. Drool output was extensive for many reasons -- those die casts, new 22" wheels & coilovers for his M plus bbk for e46 and new led headlights for his M too -- all in the same one room! I never made it past that room, and his garage -- one whole large & wide drawer of his tool box full of BBS center caps, valve stem covers, lug nuts (red, blue, black), multiples of everything, actually some of the BBS stuff spilled over into a second drawer -- the drool luckily doesn't show up on the padded garage floor. He said there was another room in the house with bakers racks full of e46 parts, we never made it there cause I would have thought I had died and gone to heaven. We got diverted when my son asked for a ride in Wagone, Preston will have to tell you about that in his own words...

It took my like 2 minutes to realize that the paint was paint and NOT the sun's reflection. Hardly noticeable, IMO. I wouldn't do it unless it was plastidip because then reversing it would take sanding and whatnot.

You won't like silver metalizer for your trim. The silver metal flakes are too large. If you're Diddy...then yes....do it all over. But it you don't want to feel like you're ballin' out of control...then try something other than silver metalizer.

We both have automotive ADHD.. I'm always looking for a new car, haha.

Meantime, what are the stats on the M5...?

Bought it from the local Ford dealer. It was a one owner trade in car. An older gentleman DD'd the car from 2002-2013, then traded the M5 for a Lincoln MKZ..
It has BMW service records from 0-90k miles, and the local Euro INDY shop from 90-118k (mileage we bought the car at).
It is Carbon Black, on Black Nappa leather. It has the door shades, powered rear shade, PDC, M audio, heated seats, xenons, suede headliner the usual E39 M5 stuff..
It is bone stock, and it will probably stay that way.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8496/8400067690_a62dde4890_b.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8049/8398977201_0a2f98d6f4_b.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8330/8398969765_28b95dd819_b.jpg

It is in very fine shape. But it needs some TLC. Like the seat twist issue on the passenger side front, a new door shade, and two new fender liners..

Sorry for the bad pictures, I don't have any shots of the whole car..

Good progress on your shorty sporty. I am considering one for myself, they have really come down in price these last few years. IMO the 2001 740i's and 750iL's were the last really nice 7 series BMW's.

Okay, I will definintley let you know. This shift knob has the backlight on the shift pattern which is pretty neat.

Good progress on your shorty sporty. I am considering one for myself, they have really come down in price these last few years. IMO the 2001 740i's and 750iL's were the last really nice 7 series BMW's.

get one but don't sell your dad's M5... everything will be transplanted. I'll come up once a month and help. Euro iL's have Glanzschwarz available as an option ($800), but shorty's only got the matte shadowline. Other things to look for, but just let me know when you get to that point as I just completed my search and know what to look for. ;)

+1 (GOAT...)

I need like 7 of them

edit: especially if your car is Imola and you care about racing (a big part of why I bought my car and not a SGM like I was looking for 4 years ago)... shouldn't be a question in your mind to what my comment means if you understand the significance

I found them JP! I just ordered one, free shipping too.

Sounds good on the E38 plans. I will definitely let you know when I get serious about one.

Same here brother. My Dad's 1990 750iL got me hooked, then he decided to give me his old 735 with nearly 300k on the clock. Oh Lord, that 735 was such a tank.. I really miss that car :(

I will have to dig up some pictures of the old 750, when you popped the hood to look at the color tag it would say "BMW-Sonderlack" meaning "BMW individual".

Your Dad's 735 looks amazing as always Stathi. Is that picture with new lowering springs installed?

Here are a few of the old 735 I mentioned..

Yup, that is the H&Rs in the front. Stock LAD in rear as most E32 guys leave it. Actually looks good and drives pretty good. But I had bought him the rare H&R kit for the iL for Christmas, we will swap the rear in the next couple weeks. He was just so excited to take it out of storage last week. He has been driving his truck all winter. Goes from the 735iL and M6 in the summer to just the truck in the winter. He gets depressed haha.

any chance he's interested in S38B35 swap? I know where to source a fully functional M6 motor for him

I had mentioned it to him in the past, but he actually just had the entire M30 rebuilt last summer at BMW! No expense spared on that car haha. He goes all out, very very OE+. He's owned it since pretty much new (couple thousand miles on it when he bought it in 91.) If it came down to it, he'd rather part with the M6 (which is insane haha! V10+6 speed manual+catless RPI exhaust=:drool) than the E32 haha

Well... My car has an exhaust leak somewhere. Last week I was lifting it to check it out, and then my jack slipped while raising the front. Front subframe bent near the steering rack mount, reinforcement plate bent, and the splash shield cracked. I've also since discovered that my driver-side control arm is shot, and my lower radiator hose is leaking (very slowly albeit).

The bend in the subframe is barely noticeable... but it's a structural piece, and used subframes are pretty cheap on eBay. I got a near mint one for $125 shipped. So the car is getting new control arms and bushings, a ZHP steering rack, new coolant and hoses, and new underbody panels. It already has new motor mounts so I'm not replacing those. May end up replacing my cats -- I think it's just a bad gasket or loose bolt, but it is possible that the pipes got damaged somehow.

Car probably won't be operational 'til next week since I don't have the control arms yet. I don't really feel like putting it back together with known bad arms.

Beautiful day for it.

I'm tackling my vanos today. Been sitting on the parts forever.

I'm about 2 hours in. Grabbing a quick lunch break.

Anti rattle rings are installed and vanos pistons are reassembled.

Just have to do the seals and button her up.

Oh yeah, and run down the PS fluid leak that I discovered this morning....

Next Saturday there's an NJCCA event in Frenchtown I was planning on attending - just a meet/greet/ogle cars event. Frenchtown is a hike for you, I imagine, but with that VANOS done, I'm sure you'll want to break it in! You can always drive up Fri. night. Plenty of space for you and/or you and the wife. Leave the Mazda at home. hahahaa

My son , young Brett, has been on the ball today. All spring sports at his high school sold mulch bags, collectively had 3000 bags to deliver, Brett and his crew of 7 personally delivered 550 bags. I just drove the truck borrowed from a friend with a trailer tagging behind that we could carry as many as 75 bags at a time. Then home and he washed my/his car, then his brother's car and finally his mom's x5. Inside & out on all of them, he did a fantastic job. Unfortunately (or fortunately) mom was driving her IR conv so it did not get cleaned today, we'll hit it in the morning. Meanwhile, I took the dog to the vet and played with the lawn mowers, cleaned decks and sharpened blades so we're ready to go in a couple of weeks. Also cleaned the 4-wheeler since my other unnamed son destroyed it previously when he was home from college.

Just got done installing my tse3 a couple hours ago. Very pleased with the sound and the fact that there is zero drone. I expected it to be louder to be honest, it is actually perfect. One thing tho, almost every flange leaks. I'm going to talk to cosa about it, I made sure they were right too. May be getting it welded after all...

Here are a couple pics, nothing of the finished product yet. Should have taken one of the underside when it was on the stands. It was also dark and my phone doesn't like dark!

David --We do rent him out, lol. He'll help me spread our 50 bags of mulch next weekend and then he'll seek to do the same for others, for money of course. Brett is always trying to figure out a way to make a buck and then he's a miser with his money. He works a part time job at a golf course, also buys & resells the limited edition sneakers to his buddies, and does yard work for an older couple around the corner. He's the only 15 year old I'm aware of around here that's saved up enough to buy his own car, and you can guess which type that will be. The challenge laid down to him was get straight A's plus earn half of what I paid for my ZHP, then I'll retain ownership but its his to drive full time, I'm confident he'll make it on both accounts. Plus he's playing on a travel & the HS varsity soccer teams, not sure how he finds the time for everything. Our other 2 kids are pretty good in their own rights, just not as driven by the all might buck as this one. I do remember another young lad that was pretty much like this oh say about 35 years ago, lol.
