Took my M3 out today and almost allowed it to get me into trouble with the local law enforcement agency. As we passed each other (going opposite directions) on the bridge we locked eyes and I knew exactly what he was thinking as my ///M got painted with some KA band...I was closer to an exit than he was so I took full advantage of my situation.

Needless to say I took an alternate route home and paid closer attention to my speed in relation to the traffic....and turned down my amped stereo system. Got my M3 safely tucked away in the garage....got her cleaned up then applied some wax to her :)

Installed CREE LED reverse lights.

@BP, since these are 7506 bulbs, can I use them as brake lights too?

Yes. I've had LEDs in the brake housing for years now.

How in the world does a bulb type affect a safety inspection? Jeez.

I replaced the key battery on one of my ZHPs keys today. I will post details of the process in my project thread later on this afternoon. It was fairly easy to replace (assuming you have good soldering skillz) ;)

For the price of a rechargeable battery, I saved myself from having to order a $250 replacement key fob...[emoji1360]

Replaced RF window regulator. It went a lot smoother than when I replaced one on my 328Ci. Very little to adjust - it was a lot easier to keep it from jamming up. I was hoping the airbag in the door was part of a supply voltage code my reader keeps throwing. I'll go and check fuses next. Any ideas where the airbag control module is?

I was hoping to install the Android-based Eonon unit today. I mistakenly bought the older Windows CE version, and want to exchange it, but the eBay seller has been slow to respond.

nice. i need to do full tie rods on my car too - it's seeming a lot more prevalent with 245's on the front now than it did with the 225's (as in, i didn't notice anything with the 225's ;) ). might do contol arms at the same time.

Yup. Sprayed it down with PB blaster. Sadly I don't have an impact wrench but I now know I have to have one. Once I got the bolt out and inspected it, there's rust built up essentially to the threads. I plan to scrape it out, anti-seize, yada yada when I put it back in.

It's funny, I feel like there are waves of repairs that members do. When I first joined I want to say it was the DISA rebuild, then shocks/struts/coilovers, now tie rods.

Been busy these past 2 weekends! Last weekend was brakes all around and soldering the broken wires inside my xenon headlight. This weekend is a new rear diffuser. The old one had a nice chunk out of it right smack in the middle from the previous owner. $123 later from BavAuto, and the rear is good as new!

Does anyone want to buy an old diffuser to paint?

Nothing on the ZHP this weekend, but gave the M3 some attention.

Subframe pulled, doing AKG reinforcement plates for RTAB, rear sway, and rear strut towers.

Trunk gutted, strut towers prepped for the plates. Need to get a gas bottle for my Miller 211, don't want to burn these in with flux. May also do some additional work on where the rear subframe mounts to the floor.

I took my M3 to a big area car meet (broke.east.meet v3) then drove it to Boston to pick up an old friend. My M3 felt so perfect on the roads today and my friend was impressed by how easy it sliced thru traffic (was going 5mph over the posted speed limit guys...) She told me she was surprised by how low my car was and how comfortable the car was to sit in while I was driving. It was an awesome day and afternoon. Finished the day by giving my M3 a nice wash and tucked her away inside the garage...

You're talking about the sub frame reinforcement, yes? Never heard of a kit for RTAB...Good idea doing it preventatively. I plan on doing this someday when I have a lift. Not going to attempt welding laying on the ground. I'm probably going to go with the Redish kit when the time comes.

Took the car out of the garage and car cover today and drove to The BMW Store in Cinci for headlight lens seals. The dealership is under full remodel slated for completion in July, can't wait to see what it looks like.

Then drove to Enthusaist Auto and paroosed the lot and some of their inventory, dreaming of a trade in.

Came home and swapped out fender markers for smoked ones with new Amber bulbs and tryout out the full smoked (housing and glass) corner turns with new Amber bulbs. If I don't like it I'll buy new smoked housing/clear lens corner markers like the ones that came on the car when I bought it.

Going tomorrow to have a tint issue fixed (free) and getting a windshield tint banner ($30)

Yep. The reflash is completely elective and not a part of any other service they're performing on the car. It's a known issue. I believe the official BMW laptop software even yells at the tech that there's a potential for the flashing operation to brick the computer.

Even the Shark Injector warns that something may go south during its reprogramming and you'd have to replace the DME out of your own pocket. Finicky little bugger it seems.

It's just to mirror the percentage that BMW uses in their expensive OEM LSD fluid for a proper functioning diff lock up. It's approx 4.6% so 4oz is just a tad higher ratio for the 1.1L LSD fluid capacity.

Friction modifier is not needed in a BMW open diff normally.

Well considering it's not a recall and isn't something that's mandatory, I don't blame them for not covering it. Would you cover a bricked DME on something the customer asks you to do for them that isn't necessary?

It's one of the reasons why I tell people I don't know of the risks when I do coding for them. "I'm not responsible".

I ended up using the SAF-XJ without any extra friction modifier when I changed my diff fluid last time around, so far no chattering. I figured if it started chattering I'll use the BMW stuff, but otherwise I don't want to inhibit any of the locking action.

Went to the dealership this morning for a DME update. Chickened out when the service advisor mentioned that flashing might brick it. Ugh. I need a car (and $1500...) right now much more than something purely elective. Oh well. I think I will just be installing a sprint booster and calling it a day until I can afford to take chances with the car's computer. Shark injector will have to wait.

Also installed the Weisslicht smoked LED side markers!

Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk

The risk is pretty minimal; even if it bricks it's usually recoverable. If you're at all concerned, mail me the DME when you have a couple days when you don't need the car; I can flash it on my bench.

I ended up using the SAF-XJ without any extra friction modifier when I changed my diff fluid last time around, so far no chattering. I figured if it started chattering I'll use the BMW stuff, but otherwise I don't want to inhibit any of the locking action.

Yeah. I'll see how this goes. After a nice easy 20 mins drive home, I tackled the low speed curves in my area and the back slid out nice and easy when my right foot made the orders. Not sure if it's placebo but it felt like the lock up happened just a split second earlier making for a more fluid/direct feeling. LOL. It's probably in my head. The old fluid only came out dark transparent brown instead of black like my friends car was.

Been a while since I have done any 'car stuff' with my move from Ottawa to Toronto and all that.

Used NCS Expert to code the parking lights to stay off when the headlights are on (SIDEMARKER_US = nicht_aktiv) and also coded the IKE (PA SOFT) to not warn me when the temps are below 3C. That alert is so annoying - passengers often wonder whether something just went wrong with the car.

It always makes my heart skip a beat, silently think "f*ck, what went wrong?", and then see that it's 37F out and sigh some relief. Coded it out for that reason.

I've been slowly replacing all of the suspension components and bushings over the past three months, and last night I replaced the final pieces...the tie rod assemblies with new boots and clamps. It was now finally time for the 4 wheel alignment I have been patiently waiting to get since I purchased the car in January. Unfortunately, all of the places within an hour drive refuse to align BMW's, as they say they don't have the proper tools or weights for the interior to do it properly.

The closest BMW dealer wanted $209 for an alignment...no thank you. The only other BMW dealer in my area-which is 80 miles away-had a coupon for a $129 4 wheel alignment. I arrived at 9:30 this morning and the car was ready before 10:30. The car had not been aligned in probably two years, and I was interested to see how close I had come to getting everything back to what it was after replacing the RTABs, and all the front suspension components (minus the control arms, which are less than 2 years old). Surprisingly, even though the settings were off, they weren't nearly as off as I thought they would be. Still, having it properly aligned makes such a difference in the way the car feels, drives, and helps to alleviate some of the tire noise issues I had been experiencing.

I've had a set of these. Unlike Charlie, I was not impressed. For street use, they were "ok". They were a bit noisy if I remember correctly, and grip wasn't as good as my S-04's. For the price you pay for them, they're good.

I had to take them on the track once since my track wheels weren't available. The tread blocks started chunking. Grip kind of sucked. They were ok in the wet as well.

These are most definitely a "you get what you pay for" tire. They're not bad, not excellent, but right in between.

Eh, even with DOT4LV (or DOT5.1 which is also low viscosity), the CDV is quite noticeable. Switching back and forth between the M3 and ZHP was quite irritating until I decided to remove the CDV on the ZHP (and for whatever it's worth, I didn't replace the line, and I had already done brake fluid with low viscosity fluid shortly before deciding to remove the CDV a few days later).

For strictly street driving, you may as well go with Pilot Sport A/S 3s instead of a cheap summer tire. Grips about as well as the PS2s, last way longer than any summer tire, and is useable on the odd cold day.

I could tell a difference in the throttle response and a little bit more pep in the 3.5k+ range. In particular when switching pedal positions abruptly I would usually get some hesitiation, however now I feel a smooth transition from abrupt change in pedal positions. Dead spots are also slightly reduced.

I felt those changes initially, but with things like abrupt pedal change hesitation, that came right back for me and eventually felt no different. Perhaps my car was relearning or something when it was smooth, because every time I do a throttle adaptation reset, it's perfect for an hour or so and then goes back to choppiness...

I'm curious to see if yours stays good.

Washed the "Green Monster" (that's what my assistant calls it, she loves cars) for the first time this season.

I've booked a full paint correction and QQuartz appointment for the end of the month. I'm waiting until the new (to me) freshly-refinished Carrera Sport wheels are CQuartzed at the same appointment before installing them. I'm really excited about the new look!

I would agree. They drive like nothing else on the road and I think a GT3 is the only proper replacement for an e90 M3. I love the styling and comfort of the 991 but I feel I would get bored with the PDK just like I am with the S-Tronic in my S4.

Porsche Racing Green - it's a very metallic racing green, so in bright sunlight it can look almost turquoise. Discreet but rich and different.

Got the whole front end resprayed (hood, bumper, fenders) as well as the rear bumper from cars tapping it and the passenger side rear quarter from a bit of rust that was forming. I just need to do some detail work now to get a lot of the dust and compound off of things!

I have an amazing local middle aged guy that is a one man operation behind his house, shop, paint booth everything and he did it for $1,200 cash. He usually does work for a dealership by him as well as restorations but he squeezed me in.

He previously worked for arguably one of the best body shops in the twin cities for 14+ years then decided to branch off on his own. His work is top notch and I would recommend him to anyone. Everything matches perfectly down to the correct orange peel texture of the OEM paint. He really knows what he is doing.

For just the quarter and rear bumper alone I was getting quotes in the $1,100-2,400 range from 3 other shops.....

Hope they will. Let us know. My local Firestone said they couldn't offer lifetime as other facilities couldn't accommodate BMWs. He wasn't sure if he could but said he'd need to see the car. He did say it needed to be full of gas and weights put in front seat(s).

More like what I attempted to do today.

Tried to clean my ICV to address some rough idling issues. Was able to remove the cabin air filter assembly, airbox, the upper and lower intake ducts, DISA valve and reach the ICV. However, the ICV would just not come out from the rubber bung that holds it within the intake manifold. Tried wiggling and yanking it many times at all sorts of angles but the rubber bung was holding it pretty well I guess.

Oh and also found out that the brand new DISA valve that I installed in the summer of 2014 is not working at all. The flap is completely loose and seems to be detached from the shaft which connects it to the vacuum pot. :mad

I think I might have to open it up and try to fix it where the shaft connects to the flap inside (kind of like in the pic below - not my pic)

I think the ICV and throttle body were pretty dirty as well :( Any tips on what I maybe doing wrong in pulling out the ICV?

Hope they will. Let us know. My local Firestone said they couldn't offer lifetime as other facilities couldn't accommodate BMWs. He wasn't sure if he could but said he'd need to see the car. He did say it needed to be full of gas and weights put in front seat(s).
Never heard any alignment place tell me that before.

I would rebuild that disa with a German Auto Solutions kit.

As far as the iacv, you sure you remove the bolts holding it down?

Yup, looks like that is what I might have to do. I have a vaico disa now so the GAS kit may not work. Should have my old OE DISA lying around...will try on that. But it's crazy that a brand new DISA would fail so soon.

Yup, both the torx bolts were out. I had also removed the bolts from the electrical harness to give it a more clearance. The ICV was moving around when I was yanking at it...it just won't come free.

Genuine BMW parts carry a two year warranty. Take advantage!

I did a g.a.s rebuild on a non bmw disa valve and it was not simple. Had to modify the housing for the kit to work.

If you have a OE BMW disa, rebuild that unit.

Not sure what to suggest about the iacv. Just pull harder or maybe pry it out ?

Thanks for the tips. I guess I was doing everything right, except maybe lacking in the muscle dept. :) I will give it a shot later in the summer again...with more power :)

Now, off to figuring out DISA rebuild.

A busy bee today. Replaced the RSMs and RTABs, and both camshaft position sensors on my 03 ZSP. 250,689 miles.

Dude, I was multi-tasking like a champ. My phone can be quiet an entire day when I have nothing scheduled. As soon as I get under a car, texts from you, Michelle, among others wouldn't stop. Popping out RTABs in between texts and sips of iced coffee can be very cathartic.

My 2003 has a new spring in its step with new CPS and much better footing with new rear suspension bits. I took extra liberties with Title 14 today.

yup. Took about 2 weeks but got the MIS tool delivered last week.

Honestly, the right side RTAB was very stubborn. Was afraid that I would have to heat up the carrier. But, a long ass pipe acting as a breaker bar and my buddy standing on the brace holding down the trailing arm got it free.

I can't say enough about the Rogue Enginneering RTABs and RSMs. No NVH, but the car tracks very well, very responsive to throttle adjustments and well, stupid easy to install.

Despite mking the the carriers very accurately, it is still going in for an alignment this week.

Glad you got them out (and done). I was able to use my Koch subframe tool to get the RTABs out. It is for rent if anyone needs it (hint, hint). I'm scheduled for alignment on Sat and have not been driving the car much in the meantime.

My wife drove the ZHP yesterday while I stayed at home (telecommute day). This is a summary of our conversation during the day:

1 ) In the morning : "When I parked the car the oil light came on and stayed on." I explained the oil level was a little low, but she could drive back home just fine.
2 ) In the afternoon : "The car doesn't start." I said that's a known problem, just try 10+ times and the car will start. She said it took 15 min for the car to finally start.
3 ) When she arrived home: "I'm not driving your car tomorrow."

The idea of a rental looks more attractive now. :biggrin

It's burning oil. In addition, it won't start some times. I will replace the ignition switch and fuel pump for that reason.

How much oil? And have you replaced the ccv?

I added 0.5 liter of oil after 1,600 miles. I don't think CCV has been replaced on this car.

Took off the 08's and put on the OEM pads, rotors on the 323. Couldn't bare the squeal any more. That was after getting nearly everything hooked back up after engine replacement on one of the race cars, only to find out the M20 had a late model water pump on it.
