Nice. What do you think of the sound difference?

Improvement but not phenomenal. Need to listen some more and maybe do a side-by-side (dunno why we didn't do it before his car got gone).

Trevor, I will update evening shots tonight. They will be preliminary shots so I will have an idea what adjustments I will need to make but I'm expecting to have a decent beam pattern with these LED fogs...

Look at my project thread for updates [emoji1360][emoji41]

I also discovered the tire shop the previous owner used to have the new Continental tires installed just before I purchased the car did not pay attention to the staggered wheels - so the 225's are mounted on the 8.5" width wheels, and the 255's are on the 8" wheels... I'll have one of my techs swap those next week. Then the car will get a complete detail, and by then the roads should be clean enough to actually register and start driving it.

Tires have been swapped
Got an error for lean running on both banks - remove MAF, found small debris in the screen, cleaned it out.
Also replaced intake elbow, cleared faults, and have not returned.
Installed the Soundplicity III unit
Replaced A-pillars with new OE covers
Installed new ZHP shift knob
Aligned headlights
Replaced "Xenon" colored fog lights with standard bulbs
Removed cowl assembly and removed wiper motor/linkage assembly to install new OE assembly

Waiting on replacement ZKW bowls from Clemsone46 when they become available.
Then maybe it will get an Epic Motorsports ECU Flash

I've put about 1200 miles on it now, and enjoying it very much!

If you were to DIY those pillars again, what would you have done differently?

Two things that may have contributed to them coming loose again, but not 100% sure:

1) Not enough glue. I used that Aleene's Tacky Spray and may not have used enough. Saw some others used it in bottle form and spread that with a wooden popsicle stick or use the 3m #77 adhesive

2) After I had the fabric reglued the fabric was not uniformly black. I spray painted the fabric with some SEM Black Trim paint and it looked great. However the solvents in that paint may have loosened the tacky glue.

If I were to do it again: new fabric and the 3M spray glue. 99.9% of the stuff 3M makes is the awesome....I was going to go that route, but FCP Euro had a special on the rear pillars that made buying new a no-brainer: $45.11 each

OK the E36 M3 has cods around the pre-cat O2 sensor for cyl 1-3 and the secondary air pump flow is too low on both banks. And a "vehicle speed sensor not present" code. Don't know how old any of these codes are so will clear them and see which ones come back. The specific Peake codes were (all from table 11): E5, F5, F6, D6. The car barely passed smog when I bought it and I assumed the cats were old, but a bad O2 sensor could do it. (I assume a bad secondary air pump does not matter when the car is warm.)

Good news is the Peake R5/SRS does work on my 2003 ZHP with the adapter. (I think Dane and others had reported using this successfully.) The 2 stored SRS codes are both from table 04 and are 70 (seat occupancy sensor) and 50 (supply voltage). I will search other SRS light threads here for answers. My seat occupancy sensor was replaced almost 6 years ago.

Tried reading codes in my ZHP with my new (used) Peake R5 FCX3 with 20-to-16-pin adapter. Good news, no codes! Bad news, no codes (not really bad, but nothing for me to tinker with now beyond my usual maintenance list). I did manage to accidentally reset the maintenance interval back to 15,000+ miles.

The ZHP has been throwing the occasional SRS/airbag light so I need to go try reading the SRS codes with my Peake SRS reader to see if there is anything.

And go try reading my E36 with this regular Peake to see if there are any codes there.

Battery inside your key may be going out...something to consider. Maybe it is not keeping a full charge causing it to act funny...my ZHP's keys were operating intermittenly until they finally quit.

Battery inside your key may be going out...something to consider. Maybe it is not keeping a full charge causing it to act funny...my ZHP's keys were operating intermittenly until they finally quit.

What did I do for my BMW today? Well..... I drove my M3 to work this morning and had a wonderful driving experience as I was taking a nice drive into Newport. What a beautiful morning and drive!!!!

That is what I am wondering since I saw your post....hence my question...

Sounds like fun!! :D

Are they still not budging on payout amount, Shawn?

I got them up another $600 today when they allowed the car to be in "very good" condition for the various components. Now at $9100. One last hope in the next few days when the get another read on what the ZHP "comps" really are (right now they allow $400 for it).

Point them toward that new EAG ad, albeit with a lot less miles maybe it'll scare them into settling closer to what you want.

I had meyle HD FCABs which were shot after only 15k ish.

Replaced them with z4m FCABs and they are wonderful!
Meyle makes garbage bushings. At one point they were good, but now, the turd in the toilet does a better job.

I had Meyle HD control arms AND bushings in at one point... Both CABs were busted and a ball joint on one of the control arms was trashed after not even 30k miles.

Hmm, I was having a hard time whether to go Meyle or Lemforder for the control arms. Glad I went and spent the extra $100 for lemforder. Going to be running Z4M bushings too

That's got to be something else. My 330 ET blew up once long ago, but I was still able to limp my car home without temps even going up from normal. I even lost HVAC heat half way through the ordeal which is when I really watched for engine temps since the coolant level was below the thermostat.

That is the exact same kit I removed from my wife's zhp. It also roughly lasted 30k. This ECS Tuning kit is crap.

The upper hose imploded and was about to burst. The expansion tank was on the verge of cracking and the cap was leaking.

Go with an OE kit from Tischer BMW.

Cooling system parts is one thing I don't mess around with. I kept trying to justify buying aftermarket for certain parts but... too many components are ones that would leave me stranded, so I had to go OEM (same parts as OE just without a BMW logo). I saved a ton of money going this route, but still ended up paying way more than aftermarket parts. It was a happy medium, I suppose.

sorry to hear, man... my ZHP came home on a flatbed yesterday too. cooling system also! my wife called me from downtown toronto... "the coolant light came on and there is steam coming from under the hood!" fortunately she was able to pull over and shut down right away. i called CAA and they towed it home on a flatbed, 222km (good thing i have CAA, the tow was basically free - it would've been over $600!).

my wife was a bit pissed, of course - so was i, i just replaced the radiator two weeks ago but i had done almost 1000km since then with no issue. i dug into it today and found the rear hose on the expansion tank (the one that goes to the heater core) had come off - apparently i did not get it sealed properly, even though i thought i had the spring clip seated - it was about 6mm off. enough to work it's way loose off the o-ring and piss coolant everywhere...

anyway. i'm happy it was something simple, glad it was my fault and not a faulty part. going to clean it up tomorrow, refill and bleed the system. i hope your issue is something simple too.

Its because i used an upholstery cleaner on the middle of the seats. Was just preventing overspray onto the alcantara that i did second, and the bristles on the brush were were a little stiff. Just precautions.

The Sonax alcantara cleaner works SO good, highly recommended... And go to your local Walmart and pick up a horse hair shoe brush to brush the dirt off and vacuum, and also to help work in the Sonax. I cant believe how night and day it looks. I was sure that my Coby ZHP knob was beyond help, and it looks just shy of new. Only downside is the $25 bottle with shipping is VERY small, but still worth it..

I was idling through a parking lot last night and my car beeped and the DSC light and Brake light came on (amber). I got home and parked it, then checked the codes just now. Its been a year or so since I scanned the car so I was expecting a lot of errors. I wasn't disappointed:

# ERRORS DETAILS - DTC(hex)/PARAM(hex)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EWS -> 0F/22 - Power on reset

ABS* -> 5E24/A0 - Pressure sensor 1/2 not plausible.

A/C -> 20/02 - AUC heating

SRS -> Shadow-memory:
61/20 - Passenger's seat belt buckle switch, resistance too low or short to ground
70/10 - Seat occupancy detector, connection to B+
03/40 - Passenger's belt tensioner, resistance too high
60/20 - Driver's seat belt buckle switch, resistance too low or short to ground
02/40 - Driver's belt tensioner, resistance too high

ZKE -> 49/3F - Customer cut-off 2: Short circuit to batt+
6C/09 - No answer driver mirror
Shadow-memory:
81/01 - Alarm memory: Door contact Driver's door
8F/01 - Alarm memory: Panic modus was activated
8A/22 - Alarm memory: Radio interior protection
90/21 - Battery Voltage: Open circuit
88/01 - Alarm memory: Hood

TEL -> 91/3F - Main antenna or compensator/combiner disconnected or shortcut
98/01 - Microphone disconnected
Shadow-memory:
11/04 - I-Bus access error

BMBT -> 01/02 - Watchdog reset
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not sure what a lot of those mean, but I cleared all the modules and tried the scan again:

ABS* -> 5E24/A0 - Pressure sensor 1/2 not plausible.

SRS -> Shadow-memory:
61/20 - Passenger's seat belt buckle switch, resistance too low or short to ground
70/10 - Seat occupancy detector, connection to B+
03/40 - Passenger's belt tensioner, resistance too high
60/20 - Driver's seat belt buckle switch, resistance too low or short to ground
02/40 - Driver's belt tensioner, resistance too high

Those SRS codes won't clear, but I thought I recall reading that PA Soft can't clear SRS codes.

The Pressure sensor 1/2 not plausible error won't clear. I guess we will see if the light comes on when I drive it again. This is unfortunate as Im reading changing those sensors is hundreds of dollars (I don't think I can tackle messing with the brake system myself).

Kinda a pita.

I only replaced one sensor because they are $120 each.

The way I did it was fill the Reservoir to the top, remove the hard line, plug it, then remove the sensor and quickly replace it.

Doing it this way I only lost half of the fluid in the Reservoir. Then I bled the brakes.

No light soo far but I did not scan the car to see if the code is still there

Did my control arms and bushings today. Went with Lemförder ZHP arms and the Z4M control arm bushings.

What a pain in the ass though. The nut on the inner ball joint on the driver side was very rusted, and after a point was just causing the shaft to spin with it. Tried all sorts of things like jacking under the ball joint, grabbing onto the shaft with locking pliers, and using an air hammer to shove a pickle fork between the control arm and nut. Nothing worked. Ended up having to drop the whole front subframe to just cut off the nut.

Yeah, it wasn't terrible when I did it on the M3 either. On this car I don't think the arms were ever touched in 12 years / 165k miles. Once I resigned myself to pulling the subframe it actually wasn't so bad. But I spent hours trying to loosen that nut before that.

Would you have the link and P/Ns on placing your order for the control arms?

I bought the arms from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Lemfoerder-W0133-1788188-LEM-Lemforder-Control-Arm/dp/B001G6MZS2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 and http://www.amazon.com/Lemfoerder-W0133-1788187-LEM-Lemforder-Control-Arm/dp/B001G6MZUU?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

Came in Lemforder bags and the part numbers on the sticker were 31122282121 and 31122282122

Bushings I bought from ECS. I bought the ones that were prepressed in new brackets. Part numbers are 31107836862 and 31107836863. https://www.ecstuning.com/ES48905/ https://www.ecstuning.com/ES48906/

You could also buy the bushings by themselves and have them pressed into your original lollipops. A good bit cheaper, but I don't have access to a shop press and didn't want to deal with getting the old brackets off the old arms. https://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/31107838575/ES48907/

Also an easy way to tell the ZHP and non-ZHP arms apart is to look at the outer ball joint. The bottom of the ZHP arms is much flatter

ZHP:
https://c1552172.ssl.cf0.rackcdn.com/60333_x600.jpg

vs

non-ZHP:
https://c1552172.ssl.cf0.rackcdn.com/279553_x600.jpg

Couple tips for the job: Get the bushings installed on the control arms before getting them on the car. A good method I found was to stick the control arms in the freezer for a few hours (I put them in overnight), lube up the bushing with some dish soap (and just dish soap; no water), and push the control arm through. Slides in like butter.

Also in hindsight, if you have something to support the engine with, it very well might be easier to just skip straight to removing the subframe when dealing with the inner ball joints. Once you get the outer ball joints free of the steering knuckle and the control arm bushings unbolted, remove the two nuts/bolts holding the steering rack in, push it out of the way, and suspend it with some bungie cords. Then remove the nuts securing the engine mounts, remove the 4 bolts for the subframe, and it should just drop down. Not very heavy. That way you have much better access to the ball joints, and you can actually torque them.

Yeah, I installed them as an "oem plus" mod. Gives the car a little more caster and tightens up the steering. The bushing itself is also solid rubber instead of fluid filled, and is considerably stiffer because of that.

Replaced the center console armrest with a unripped one.

After reassembly, the tray under the armrest will only separate if the armrest is fully down, and even then, it will lift up and follow the armrest instead of staying put/flat. I don't remember how much tension was in the springs when I removed the old one. Should I have given them an extra 1/2 turn twist or something?

Plus, he likes working on BMWs... I am trying to get him out of the VAG rut he is in. Compared to his Audi S8, the E46 is stupid easy to work on.

1) lifetime warranty - I drive in the winter, need warranty against rust problems
2) distance - I have a shot at getting them before the weekend - car is undrivable as is
3) they price match, AND I get $100 off for being a loyal FCP customer, free shipping if I can't convince them to let me pick it up

Pss10's dialed down to 1 are a MUCH more comfortable ride than whatever H&R's and Bilstein Sports. I've had H&R race and "Sport" Sports. I've got the 10's set on 3 and it is still a better ride and my car is low. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160421/d58d09940f9b6fec52504339a4059b95.jpg

I planned on running them at around 4, maybe 5. Based on the comment above, 4 is looking more likely. I'd have to see how they are. I want to adjust height for maybe 2 fingers worth of wheel gap, which should hopefully be high enough to allow for a little bounce and still be acceptable for looks.

BP, glad you're going the bilstein route. the PSS are almost half the price of the PSS10; i haven't driven the PSS10 but i am very pleased with the damping in the PSS kit, it is matched to the spring rates and feels excellent. now, you can obviously get the PSS10 to feel the same, but then crank up the damping for track use - but it is worth the extra dough?

i think you're still going to need a fairly respectable right height and at least -2.0º camber in the rear with 18x8.5" ET35 wheels and the 255-width PSS. i ran my 135Ms with 255-width PSS and 10mm spacers (so effectively ET40), with -0.75º camber and it rubbed occasionally. more negative camber would help. are you fenders rolled?

you're going to love this suspension!! when do you pick it up?

From what I have found with Bilstein in my experience of running them on 4 vehicles. 2013 Cummins Ram, 2006 Duramax, 1997 M3 (spring and shock setup), 2000 E46 323iA (PSS).

I never had to warranty the truck suspension one single time and it was flawless and they rode great. Now for the cars I blew out one strut in the 97 M3 to where it would just collapse under its own weight when removed before sending it out and my PSS fronts had to be warrantied twice for both struts in the front and one rear shock in the year and a half I had it.

That being said I would avoid Bilstein applications for cars personally. I know they have a ton of racing history but I would not recommend them for a street car. All of the setups I have used with Koni shocks have ridden better, had a wider range of dampening adjust-ability and never had a single issue with them blowing on the 3 cars I have now ran them on.

From my own personal knowledge, the PSS and the PSS10 set on 3 are about the same ride wise. My wife loved the ride of the PSS, so she got my PSS on her ZHP and I picked up the 10's for my 323ci that sees track duty.

Rent the tool from Marcus unless you got money to blow and want to buy a new one.

The tool makes it simple.

I bit the bullet. Bought the MIS tool. RTABs and RSMs delivered today.

The only issue I have at the moment is the offset of the wheel. I've run 255/40-17's in the back before (pretty much same diameter as 255/35-18) with ET40 offset wheels with no issue. It's that last few mm of wheel offset that killed me, unfortunately. Rear fenders are rolled. I believe my camber is already at around 2 - my buddy who last did the alignment said he set it there so I get a good mix of tread life and fitment.

I placed the order with overnight shipping this morning... but then got a call as I was typing this up stating that they don't have it in stock and that Bilstein needs to send it directly... I was very unhappy about this, but at this point I'm fighting a losing battle. I will not have a usable ZHP by this weekend, and I'm just gonna have to get over that...

So, while I had him on the phone, I applied my $100-off loyalty discount to the order since I forgot to do it at checkout, as well as lowered the shipping method so I could save money on shipping and taxes. Hopefully I'll have it before next weekend...

Sorry to hear you had issues. The only 2 failures amongst the 8 Bilstein shocks I've had in my driving life (2 cars) were both on the same car, at high mileage, which was regularly driven on some of the worst roads in the area - imagine horrible speedbumps on the highway and countless potholes that I try to dodge but fail to do successfully rather frequently ("if it's not one pothole it's another"). Considering the shocks have lasted to well over 120-130k of roads like that, I'd say that's a darned good run. Let's not forget that they were replaced for free. I have no complaints about Bilstein's quality of product - my only gripe right now is how stiff my car is with the spring and shock combo I have - Bilstein Sport with H&R Race springs.

323i had them for 2 years and the M3 had them for 11 months. I drive about 28 miles across town each way and the M3 wasn't an everyday car.

WOW, my brain was telling me long but it was actually low.

I had H&R Race springs on the M3 and they weren't super dumped with the PSS on the e46. I would say it was lowered an inch and a half to two inches MAX

that's pretty low on an E46. the bilsteins already have very little travel up front due to the inverted design - i'm not surprised they died early.

But.... does it stop your M from going out?

I don't drive my ZHP in the rain... one reason is simply because it's black... and I have a spare car but Damn I know what you mean, I only have 2 days a week when the kids are in daycare to drive my car and it's been raining a lot lately. It was gorgeous out yesterday so I said F it, put the car seats in the ZHP and took the kids for a spin. They friggin loved it!

Expansion tank blew on 405 yesterday. Just in time to catch rush hour traffic and enjoy the 38 mile 2 hour tow back home. Luckily my Indy was able to get the part and it was installed before 10pm last night. Couldn't figure out the proper bleeding procedure (which is likely why it blew on the first place as I replaced thermostat last month). Found a thread on proper bleeding technique and it's back up and running like a champ.

Oh, also got in on the mfactory spring break sale! Helical LSD here I come!

Had the car clayed and waxed earlier in the week too.

Debating on the Mishimoto expansion tank next. They're a pretty reputable company with radiators, has anyone gone this route for ET? Love to hear some reviews/feedback before spending the $209.
