^^^ Yup. I wasnt sure I got all the air out the first time. My pedal doesn't feel spongy per say, but the pedal travel takes a little less effort than before. Hopefully that makes sense. My brakes don't feel bad at all, just different from before. They definitely stop me on a dime if I have too, the pedal travel just doesn't seem as firm as before.
I was thinking it could be the combination of the new calipers, lines, rotors and pads. I'm 99 percent sure the lines are all bubble free, the brake reservoir was always filled to the max as well so I'm pretty certain I didn't let any air into the ABS system. The lines were only disconnected for a few seconds each. Any ideas?
Go bed in your brakes, then see if it feels any better. The pads need to bed into the new rotors so there is a layer of material there for them to grab on to. If you're not sure how to do this, I made a tutorial video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRVoNYhvJuE
In my experience, if you disconnect the brake lines, you introduce air into the ABS system. Every time I've done so, I ended up having to use DIS to get the brake pedal feel back to where it should be
Never once had this problem. I must have bled my brakes a few dozen times since I've owned my car (a bleed before every track event, plus various brake system issues over the years). Never had to touch DIS, and brake performance has always been perfect after a bleed and a beddding.

What's DIS?
Yep! they are hawk HPS pads. That makes me feel a little better now.
My brake definitely has maybe an extra 1/2" of travel than before, but still stops perfectly. Hawk HPS 5.0 pads.

How often do you remove lines? It's only when moving lines it's an issue. Even then, I wouldn't say the brake performance was bad without using DIS - I could still get enough brake pressure to trigger ABS. But the pedal firmed up considerably after doing the procedure with DIS.
Even when I don't remove lines, I do prefer to bleed the ABS so that I can get all the old fluid out.

Did some more rear driver adjustments so I can fit 20mm without rubbing the inner liner.
Before:
25191
After:
25192
What a pain to adjust. I think I've done it three times and now I'm getting really fast at it. I'll be seasoned pit crew quality by next week if I still have to make more adjustments.
Also added full camber from the OEM eccentric camber adjustment bolt for more stable cornering so the rear traction doesn't slip out as easily.
OEM spec (car specific):
25193
Max negative camber which isn't a huge amount (-.4° to -.6° from my iPhone reading):
25194
With that the the toe goes in but OEM is semi aggressive so now I'm closer to neutral toe but still enough to keep stable high speed tracking in surface ruts.
I'll install the front reinforcement plates soon and get another full alignment mainly for toe.

I was trying to borrow a set of wheels and tires to set the car on because I was a little nervous about putting it on four stands, just because it makes be nervous, but also because I need to be in and out of the car to pull interior parts to send to Coby Wheel.
Here they are all loaded up in the truck along with my new Pilot Sports!

Gracias, señor.
Also, does a shorter shock stroke have any real world impact unless you're hitting huge bumps?
well, the koni yellow for our cars is designed to work with stock springs - be it sport (ZHP) springs or non-sport springs. since the rear of our car is already 15mm lower than non-sport, a shorter stroke is going to put lower springs (i.e., sport or let's say, eibach pro-kit or H&R sport) closer to the sweet spot of the damper.
the P/N for the 911 rears is: 82101159SPORT
they are $179/ea at ECS right now with free shipping, and also come with a metal dust cover. :) (you could re-use your original with bumpstop if you want, not a big deal).
there are a bunch of M3 guys that run this shock. apparently some calculations were made about weight between the rear of the 911 and the rear of the M3, and it seemed like a favorable match, and the results have been good.

I've removed the front lines at least 4 or 5 times since I've owned the car. Most of those times were because of the damned BMW Performance brakes that kept leaking, so I had to keep removing the calipers to rebuild 'em. Did the rears twice.
I looked it up and it seems the online consensus is that it's unnecessary to bleed the ABS pump when changing lines, as long as the reservoir doesn't empty out. My BMW tech friend said the same thing, and says the ABS pump only *needs* to be done if it gets replaced (assuming the system doesn't run dry). If it works for you then keep on! :thumbsup

With the help of Shawn and his power bleeder, I had the brake system flushed over the weekend on Sketchi. There was no air that came out of the lines however pedal travel is longer and not as firm compared to my zhp.

She's off to the shop today 'til Thursday for...
- VANOS/DISA valve
- Oil filter housing gasket/VANOS oil line
- CCV system
- Full cooling system overhaul
- Koni FSD shocks
- Full front/rear suspension refresh+rear subframe reinforcement (poly bushings for subframe/differential)
- Short shifter installation+replacement of pretty much everything there (also the AKG Motorsports selector rod!)
- Oil pan gasket
- ///M leather steering wheel
- 12mm rear spacers
- Front strut bar install
- M3 spec rubber motor/transmission mounts
- Probably some more stuff I'm forgetting.. the car is packed to the gills with boxes right now!
Headlights are also coming off and going to my buddy Rick @ Epic Lighting in Oklahoma for the E46 RetroQuik install. :) I can't wait to see how different the car drives and feels after everything is done. This week is gonna go by so slowly lol.

Give the calipers a couple whacks with a hammer while bleeding. If still no air, bleed the ABS system. If still no air and/or the brake pedal still feels mushy, it could just be your pads.

Thanks.
Wish I had access to INPA.
But I might give this a try. Thoughts?
Use the old fashioned two person method
Before you have the person in the car press the brakes, have them start the car
Crack the bleeder
The DSC light should go solid
Close the bleeder
Have the person in the car release the brake pedal and then turn the car off to reset DSC
Repeat as necessary
Doing it this way causes the DSC pump to cycle as you crack the bleeder. DSC will see too much pressure loss and error out. That's why you must restart the car to reset things--hitting the DSC button won't cycle it.

Yeah I thought this too. Unless you ran the reservoir dry, you shouldn't need to bleed the ABS pump. I went out last night and bedded in my pads and they already feel MUCH better. Still a tiny bit softer than before but its something I can live with. Im thinking it could be the hawk HPS pads..Thanks a lot for the video! it helped a lot.

No idea on the pads or rotors. Probably some cheap autozone crap the previous owner installed.
Only reason I asked is because I will be replacing a brake pressure sensor this weekend on the car and want to avoid any extra work.

Well. Let's say the software can be "acquired". It's factory and dealer software that leaked out over the years. With a little bit of computer knowledge, it's not super difficult to set everything up.

Started the auto to manual swap yesterday on my zhp. So far, took off the exhaust, (only one of the 4 exhaust bolts broke off the stud! Others came off hard after a few minutes of heating them up) also took off the driveshaft, heat shield, splash guard, drained the tranny fluid. Disconnected the shifter linkage. Hopefully today, I'll start pulling out the darn thing! So far so good. I hope the whole project will go as smooth as yesterday. Took me about half a year of researching/hunting for good deals on parts. The 5 speed is a ZF from a Z3.

Finally replaced my front driver's side window regulator! I followed the e46fanatics tutorial and had not a piece of trouble with it. Scariest part was fiddling with the door airbag, knowing that I was effectively handling a bomb. I had the battery disconnected, of course, but it's still scary to know there's a ton of potential energy just sitting in a box dangling in front of your face while you're mucking around inside the door.
Glad it's over and done with though - the sun's starting to show up in these parts, and I was getting tired of having to open my door every time I wanted to order fast-food.

You are doing a 5 speed swap as well? Noice! Make sure you do the shift pin service on the gearbox for smoother shifting. That will also eliminate the infamous leaning shifter problem.
Nice! Any reason for choosing the 5-speed over a 6-speed equivalent? Definitely document the process with photos!
Mostly pricing. Decent 6-speeds go for around ~$1200. The driveshaft for the 6 speed costs more as well. I picked up a good 5 speed for $455! Plus, with the 6 speed, you need the dual mass flywheel setup, in which that dual mass flywheel alone costs $600. I got a Valeo conversion clutch kit, including the flywheel, for that kind of money. And then theres reliabilty. I've been doing some reading and it seems that people are saying the 5 speed is more reliable.
Yea that 1:1 in 5th with the 3.64 diff will be high reving!
I bought a diff from a regular 2001 330ci. Don't know the final drive ratio but I had it welded. Focusing more on drifting/hooning in this thing.

The ZHP is on stands in the garage, and the wheels are at the powder coater. Last night, I pulled the shifter/boot, park brake/boot, and steering wheel and sent a box off to Michael at Coby Wheel.
I've heard horror stories about getting the shift knob off, but mine was cake. The park brake handle was a huge pain in the ass, though. Must have taken me 15 minutes of pulling, rotating, yanking, and cursing. Got it, though.

The gear ratios are almost the same, just with no overdrive (1:1 5th gear). Since I had this setup in my E30, you'll be revving about 3000 at 70 if you retain your stock rear end.

I don't know how often they outright fail, but the synchros, especially in second, are a little weak. Pretty easy to bind second gear if you shift fast. The 5-speeds might be stronger, but perhaps more importantly, they are more easily rebuilt. And they weigh less. Both important for a track car.
For a street driven car, I'd probably argue the 6-speed is more reliable since these boxes never get the 5th gear lean and such problems.
I did a lot of coding to the E92. I thought my ZHP had a lot of awesome options to enable - the E92 has even crazier stuff.

I did a lot of coding to the E92. I thought my ZHP had a lot of awesome options to enable - the E92 has even crazier stuff.
Flashed my DME to the BMW Performance Power Kit (v57 Daten files have it! For MEVD17 N55 E9Xs, use zusb 8666678 and follow these directions (http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31885))
Mirrors fold on lock with comfort access
Velocity display on OBC
Brake lights flash at 5hz when ABS is activated
Removed iDrive disclaimer
Enabled weather band on radio
Removed driver seat belt chime
Disabled key fob opening all windows
Enabled key fob closing all windows
Soft-on for welcome home lighting with license plate lights
Fogs on with high beams
Fogs on with flash to pass
Double blink hazard lights
Changed CBS maintenance display to show only mileage, not dates, for brake pad wear estimation
Attempted to turn on spark plug CBS and tried to set oil/brakes to a percentage instead of mileage, but all aren't fully supported and will show blank values
Wipers that are mid-wipe when the engine is turned off will finish wiping and park at the bottom of the windshield off (wtf, bmw, you must've had a bored programmer to think of something as obscure, but useful, as that)
The bolded ones can be done on the e46 too

The tire shop was a little annoyed with me. The powdercoater's didn't cover the hub rings when they sprayed the wheels.
The tire tech came up to me and he's all, "these don't fit your car?" And I was like.... "Um they fit two weeks ago??"
We brain-stormed and decided to sand the insides of the rings on the wheels. Thankfully the guys at discount tire were cool about it. I called the powder coating company after and gave them a piece of my mind. Losers. Just happy it all worked out.
Other than that, they look amazing and should hold up well. Pics to come soon

That's my nightmare. My wheels are getting refinished right now and I can't imagine getting them done only to have them gouged up again.
The powder coater is going to mount and balance my new set. I figured who better than the people who just put the brand new finish on the wheels to mount them up?

Think I have a misfire, car started running super rough about 3/4 of a mile from where I live and got a CEL. Shut the car off then started it again, started to run rough again. Will a normal code scanner be able to tell me if there's a misfire on an individual cylinder or will I need PAsoft to see something like that?

Thinking it's probably the coil pack(s). I did plugs ~45k or so ago- maybe less, I'd have to check my records- so they don't seem like the likely culprit. I ordered a coil pack last night just in case, figure it can't be a bad thing to have around given that I don't think they've been touched on this car.

Came home yesterday from a short business trip to find the battery in my M5 had gone tits-up. Did a history check and found it was last replaced in 2011, so after some quick research, was off to O'Reilly to pick up a SuperStart 95R Platinum AGM battery. You wouldn't believe the size & weight of this hulk - 63 lbs! Good price for AGM though at $179.95, and super-easy to replace. Unlike the E46 and other E39's, the M5 battery is in the center-rear area of the trunk, not in the right rear fender well. Now I'm ready to endure the brutal Phoenix heat. I always go AGM for that reason.

I was asking about the 17x8.5" ET40. Their website states that "Seventeens have clearance for up to 355mm BBKs in many applications." I inquired about these:
Front kit: 1B1.8008A 355x32 2-Piece 14"

I was asking about the 17x8.5" ET40. Their website states that "Seventeens have clearance for up to 355mm BBKs in many applications." I inquired about these:
Front kit: 1B1.8008A 355x32 2-Piece 14"
Rear kit: 2c1.8013A 345x28 2-Piece 13.6"
Granted it's a large kit, but I'm sure they'd be fine on 18s.
Oh, I see what you're saying. That's a rather large kit...
The BMW Performance calipers were huge yet they fit behind my Style 68's with a spacer, which have curved-inward spokes as well. I think the spacer requirement was 3mm (I used 12's anyway), but that was purely a fault of the spoke design and not the size of the wheel. The calipers filled the wheel, but being a 17" wheel, still accommodated the caliper. If the spokes were straighter, it would have fit.
I wonder how the Brembos compare to the BMW Performance Brembos in terms of caliper size... those were friggin' huge, so I can't imagine the non-BMW branded Brembos to be any bigger. The Perf ones utilized the stock 330i rotor sizing.

I actually prefer the fit and feel of the OEM corners compared to the cheapo feeling of the DEPO corners that came with my car. It's the little things. :)
Mine are ULO from Germany, so they fit quite nicely. :)

I'm assuming it has something to do with needing a side-facing reflective surface instead of simply a bulb housing.
I know some guys in law enforcement and they said the code on the state books state that you need an amber reflector in the front and red reflector in the back. My clears have a clear reflector and orange bulbs. Plus, it depends on what shop you take it to. I've been to a few places that don't care. Since I was going to a new place where I've never had my car worked on, I swapped them out to prevent any questions/delays.
I'm glad it takes about 5 minutes to swap them.

Paid off my 2014 property tax for both cars. Fortunately I only had to shell out $280.46 for both cars :) Seems the ZHP only cost me $84.92 for the entire year.
With that said... why on earth would I want to buy a new $60,000 car? So I can shell out even more money in property tax? I don't think so.... I will stay with my well maintained E46's instead. Thank you BMW for designing a nice car! :thumbsup

Thanks. Are Auto Dimming mirrors the ones with the red clown nose under the mirrors? If I read it correctly, then a compass mirror would be a plug and play as replacement?
Sockethead

both mirrors can have the clown nose. On manual mirrors you twist the clown nose to dim the mirror. Auto dimming mirrors will have an electric eye centered right above the clown nose and one on the back of the mirror
The mirror in my car was originally a manual mirror. I did the OEM retrofit and added the wiring harness but you can tap into one of the other existing harnesses too

Finished the exterior full detail I've been wanting to do (I've been waiting the pollen to clear out some.....)
Full Foam Bath and 2 Bucket Wash
Clay bar the whole car using Griot's Detailer Spray
Polished driver's side Shadowline rain gutter with PC7424 DA with 3" orange pad and Meguiars M105
Polished the hood with 2 passes of Mequiars M105 (PC7424 DA with 6" orange pad), 1 pass on rest of car
Polished whole car with 1 pass of Meguiars M205 (PC7424 DA with 6" white pad)
Sealed whole car with Blackfire Wet Diamond Sealant
Polished all 4 wheels with Rejex Polymer Sealant
Looks like the San Diego lifestyle for it's first 10 years really agreed with the car, as the paint looks amazing for a 10 year old car. Paint has zero water spotting, just some fine hairline scratches that look like they came from a cat on the hood and trunk lid. Next time I use the m105 I should be able to get the remaining scratches out. Only parts that saw any abuse were the bumpers. The dealer I bought her from had the front one refinished, and the back one is on my list to get done. It's not bad, just doesn't compare to the condition of the rest of the car. Since she is only going to be a fair weather car for me she should be easy to preserve....

That makes sense to me. I had a B&M short throw shifter that would grind going into 2nd when I shifted fast. I went back to OEM short shift kit and I don't have that problem anymore. But, it speaks to the problem.
Also, I can't see a track car using 6th gear probably ever.
I love the 6-speed for my street car though, my RPM's would be too high on the freeway even with the stock 3.07 ratio.

In VA, you pay property tax, registration, and an annual safety inspection fee every year. And tax on the vehicle when purchased. I live in Ohio now.

I put on the spare and went to put air in it at a convenience store. When I start to fill the back, I hear this loud hissing. I think it's the air hose until I look at the front wheel getting lower...front rim is bent too.

CT is an expensive state to live in. I pay:
Motor Vehicle Tax every year, split up into 2 payments - last year's taxes (paid this year) was about $277 or half that for 6 months.
-- It doesn't help that I live in one of the more expensive cities in the state, at about 42 mil rate... Hartford, the capital, is over 70 for mil rate!!!
Registration is $85 every 2 years
Emissions is $20 every 2 years, due right before renewing registration
Insurance is about $150 a month
All for a car that is worth less than $5000.
I did the math the other day for if I was to buy my dream car, an F80 M3. Calculated at about $75,000 value, I would be paying over 2 grand a year in taxes. Unreal...
EDIT: Holy crap, didn't realize there were that many posts since the one I quoted... missed a whole page. Oops.

Perhaps when I pick up my set of RE-71R's come May? Or whenever the hell Bridgestone decides to make them available again.

Replaced my trunk lid grip strip and installed ziza led license plate lights. Also, took my car for a drive with the freshly wrapped wheel from Coby after swapping it in lastnight. Feels so gewd.

I had to cut the A/C belt off after stopping an hour from home after diving 7 hours. Made awful noise which clued me in. Guess I'll be replacing both belts tomorrow. This is the 323, so yes I'm not overly concerned with the threads being covered on the mech fan portion. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160408/312b90d893ed7c5f886de20bd40f3389.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160408/5b8a6ee91ee22b6d51f8d996f45f4b97.jpg

first off; congrats on the new PSS! you'll love them. and you're going to need to figure out how not to rub like crazy in the rear, as the 255 PSS are W I D E (tread block is 10.2" wide!). you'll need over -2.0º camber in the rear.
secondly; you actually could've packed it more efficiently. ;)

The specs are darn near identical to the 255/40-17 RE-11's I ran at the track.
RE-11, 255/40-17:
Section width: 10.2"
Tread width: 9.4"
PSS, 255/35-18:
Section width: 10.2"
Tread width: 9.5"
They're pretty much identical in size. I shouldn't have any rubbing issues. :thumbsup

I sure am curious about what you'd propose. We really had to rack our brains to even get this configuration to fit... must've tried at least 5 different ways and always ran into an issue. :dunno

yes, but your BBS wheels have a lower offset, right?
for the tires, you can stack 3 on each side of the rear seat (the seat back must be up to do this), and 2 in the trunk. the leaves plenty of room for front passengers.

True... guess we'll just have to see.

Already tried that... just couldn't get it to work. :(
Tires were too big...
I had to sit pretty far forward and straight up, too... it was a bit uncomfortable on the 1.5 hr drive back home. Needless to say, I don't ever plan on taking 8 tires in my car again, though to be fair, I didn't plan on it this time either. :dunno

Tried reading codes in my ZHP with my new (used) Peake R5 FCX3 with 20-to-16-pin adapter. Good news, no codes! Bad news, no codes (not really bad, but nothing for me to tinker with now beyond my usual maintenance list). I did manage to accidentally reset the maintenance interval back to 15,000+ miles.
The ZHP has been throwing the occasional SRS/airbag light so I need to go try reading the SRS codes with my Peake SRS reader to see if there is anything.
And go try reading my E36 with this regular Peake to see if there are any codes there.

In VA, you pay property tax, registration, and an annual safety inspection fee every year. And tax on the vehicle when purchased. I live in Ohio now.
Not sure who you're referring to though.

Dang! I now feel lucky. In Michigan we pay an annual registration fee, and sales tax when you buy the vehicle. That's it. Oh, and car insurance.

This is more of what I have done in the past week...
1. Replaced Vanos seals, valve cover gasket and spark plugs. VERY noticeable performance increase due to very worn Vanos seals.
2. Replaced RTAB's with standard Lemforder E46 parts. Even with 129k miles, twisting of the original RTAB's showed very little wear.
3. Replaced rear shocks with Bilstein B4 Tourings valved for sport suspension. Also new Lemforder rear shock mounts and new gaskets. Although the factory shocks were toast, the original RSM's showed basically no wear or cracking. This car has lead a pretty pampered, easy life and it shows by how little bushing wear there is.
4. Installed a new Eonon GA5150F head unit and factory HVAC relocation kit. This is one of the few non-maintenance items I have purchased for the car, and I was really on the fence about it for a while due to some of the issues people have had. However, so far I am very pleased and impressed with the head unit. It sounds excellent, and I love the functionality it offers. It's not perfect, but what it offers for $329 shipped (the price I paid on eBay) it cannot be beat. I still have to finish running some of the wires (GPS antenna, Bluetooth microphone, USB dongle) and hopefully I can get that done this weekend.
