Damn, definitely a different route. What made you change your mind? I would think the S4 would be ideal for the snow up there.
Not saying I don't approve of your choice, the ZHP is just sooo good :thumbsup
Yeah. I plan on finding a slick top ZCP e46 M too.
We only get 3-8 bad days a year and on those days I always just leave so early for work it isn't a problem or I will just steal my GF's Tiguan :)

Decided to keep the ZHP and sell my E36 M I just purchased along with the S4. Going to do an LSD in the ZHP and do some suspension work and get the F80.
The ZHP is just way too awesome

GLWS. i think it's a good decision, the ZHP is a much better 'all-rounder,' especially if you're downsizing your cars. LSD makes it that much better.
F80 M3 sounds like a good decision too. :)

it is, and it's pretty good in the snow, too. :)

Finally soldered LEDs for the rear doors in the M3 cluster

Also changed some of the warmup LEDs to red and wrote some arduino code to set an appropriate redline for the M54... but I didn't install the module in the car yet

Had a bad misfire, so I took off the valve cover... cover... and checked the connections for the coil packs. ISTA was telling me it was cylinder 2. Sure enough, the connector was slightly loose, so I swapped the coil pack with cylinder 1 (just to be sure) and re-checked all of the connections for the ignition coils. Seems OK now, but time will tell. It did it intermittently for the past 2 weeks up till today.

Very cool, I do love the look of the M3 cluster. Is the oil temperature gauge still programmed for our instantaneous mpg gauge or have you somehow wired it for true oil temp?

Oil temp gauge works without doing anything on 325s and 330s (323s and 328s are SOL). The only things that don't work are the warmup lights since our DMEs don't broadcast the message to trigger those.

May be a stupid question: What about the mileage reading?? Does it show the mileage it had on the M3 or does it get the mileage from the ZHP's DME??

I reset the mileage on the cluster to 0 and coded my ZHP's VIN onto it. Then after I plugged it in, it pulled the correct mileage from the LCM

I think it's about time I create a maintenance/mod thread for my car. But in the meantime, here's what I did last night and today - replaced diff bushings with AKG black, replaced rear shocks with Koni adjustable Sports, and replaced stock RSM's with Rogue units. All in all, a good time. Here's a few notes for anyone considering doing any of this.
Let's get the easy stuff out of the way first: shocks and RSM's are cake. Worst part is removing the trunk interior. Thankfully, that won't be needed in the future due to the RE RSM's - they can come out the bottom. Use a utility knife to score the RSM sound deadening material in the trunk. If you tear it, it'll disintegrate into countless pieces. With scoring, you can get a nice, clean break. Install is easy. Remember to tighten the rear shock lower mount when the car is back on the ground.
The differential bushings are hard work, and correct tools are essential. Make sure you have the star sockets for the driveshaft and the differential bushing puller/installer tools. I was fortunate to be able to borrow the puller/installer tools from a friend. The DIY's were generally helpful here. But I did save some time with a couple edits. First, you do not have to remove the axles or pull the whole differential. I removed the exhaust (I have a Corsa, so I can just remove the rear 2 sections), diff brace, driveshaft from the diff, 1 side of the sway bar from the suspension, and the 2 sway bar mounts to the subframe (just swing the bar out of the way - you don't have to remove it totally from the car). I then loosened the front 2 bolts and big rear bolt. I then got a hydraulic jack under it, took up the weight, removed those 3 bolts, and slowly lowered and pivoted the diff. The CV joints have plenty of play to allow you to get the diff low enough to use the bushing tools. Here's what my set up looked like under the car when the diff was down...
24460
Bushing removal went great, but was exhausting. It's a cramped space and even with the tools, you're expending a lot of energy. Installation of front bushes was easy. Rear bush... not so much. The sway bar flange is in the way when installing an AKG bushing (OEM would not have this issue - they press in from the opposite side). I thought I'd be clever and use the stock bushing tool. Installation went great, but when I tried to remove the tool, I saw the picture below.
24459
I had not thought through removal ahead of time. The 8-inch bolt was stuck between the installed bushing and the sway bar flange, and the bushing removal tool was useless to me b/c it was stuck in install mode (different flanges go on it for install vs removal). Expletives ensued. I spent 30 minutes trying to figure out what to do, then an hour slowly removing the new bushing with the stuck bolt and a ball joint separator I have. It was exhausting... but it worked, thank God. Lesson learned. NEVER install a bushing without thinking about how you'll remove the install tool when you're done. Live and learn!
Finally, here's the cracked rear bushing that inspired this repair. 98k miles on it.

Plus one. Wow. Great job. The two front bushes defeated me but I did the main rear culprit. Glad you were able to get that bolt out!

Just took the new diff bushings for a test drive...and the driveline "clunk" on and off acceleration is finely gone!!!!!!!!! Feel like doing a dance. The AKG black bushings feel great. No increase in vibration, very direct power on/off feel, very slight increase in gear noise (can't hear it at all when on throttle, just when coasting). And the new Koni's in the rear are a welcome improvement. Those stock 97k mile shocks were shot.

Nice to know all of the changes had positive improvement! I have intermittent clunk from the rear and I have yet to pinpoint the cause. My mechanic had some sound device hooked up and couldn't locate it on the diff bushings, so who knows. Were your shocks original? Mine were shot by 50k.

Any dead bodies found ?
I got my ZHP about 15 months and 200 miles ago (111,000 miles on the car now). The thing that has bugged me the most has been the chipped/peeling soft-touch plastics on the interior. Over time they just look dreadful. So I bought some paint, a few new parts, and after a day's worth of effort I have what feels like a new car. Total was just over $325 for everything. Here's what I used:
- Krylon Black Satin for the black cube. No prep, just painted it in a couple of light coats. Looks perfect.
- SEM Color Coat 15013 Landau Black flexible coating for the shift surround. Scuffed off all the old soft coating with a kitchen scour pad, then 5 very light coats of the SEM. It's not quite as matte as I would have liked, but the finish turned out nice. I understand the SEM is quite durable.
- 2nd-hand new console and rear cover from a user on E46 Fanatics. It was new in box, and I paid for both pieces what I would have paid for just the console from a vendor.
- New radio carrier and storage tray from FCP Euro. Free shipping, and their prices are competitive. I decided not to skimp here, since even lightly used ones seem to have gouges and scuffs.
- New coin holder from Amazon.
- I bought a new cup holder when I got the car 15 months ago--the old one was just too disgusting.
- Alcantara shift and hand brake boots were in great shape, so I just cleaned them.
I didn't realize how worn everything was until I got it out of the car:

And the finished product. Great results!

Next I'm going to work on the door armrests. I got the SEM paint chart, and I should be able to match the Hellbeige.
Thanks for looking!

Yes! Found one. This is a few months back, after I experimented with Plasti Dip on the shift plate. It ended up getting nicked pretty fast, and I re-did it yesterday with the SEM Color Coat. But this shot shows the black cube trim wear pretty well, along with the nasty ash tray and sunglass bin and shift knob with the previous owner's gunk on it. That got a good clean as well.

Drove up to Charlie's place and he assisted with disassembling my driver's side headlight. The goal: replace the stepper motor.
Unfortunately, RealOEM gave me bunk information. The part number it says my VIN should have for a stepper motor is incorrect on the site, so unfortunately I had ordered that part number and found the part received to be different than the part that came out of my headlight. I was annoyed that I spent that money on a part thinking it was the correct part number.
Luckily Charlie had spare parts (as usual) and took one of the steppers out of his spare headlight assembly and ended up installing that instead. Hopefully it works out - we'll find out tonight.

Yes!

I used Krylon Black Satin for the black cube, not SEM. I just cleaned it with a damp cloth first, then laid down a couple of thin coats. It really brought out the detail, and is spot on for the original color and sheen. I did the rear armrests and all the dash trim a while back, and plan to do the fronts soon.

Yesterday was E46 headliner day for me and my good friend that owns the body shop. He has a good bit of experience with headliners, so his experience was much appreciated. The '01 325i he is 'purchasing' from me and my ZHP both had drooping headliners, along with all of the pillar pieces having fabric issues. When I had owned the '01 325i, I had purchased brand new A and C pillar trim. These didn't even make it 3 years until they started peeling again. No way was I going to waste money on the ridiculously overpriced pieces from the dealer again, so luckily my friend found the material for our headliners from a local fabric store that is almost an exact match in thickness to the original material, and the look of the texture is the same. It was also on sale for only $9 a yard, so we got 3 yards each for both of our cars.
The adhesive used was DAP Contact Cement that came in a gallon container. We applied it using a cheap suction paint gun. We removed the old glue using red Scotch wool pads. It came off with relative ease. Now we did not remove every single ounce of the old glue, but from my friend's experience he promised that it wouldn't come down for quite a long time. We shall see. Here are a few pictures from yesterday.
Both cars after pulling the headliners and sunroof panels. My car needed the sunshade fix, so this was done with all new parts during re-assembly.

I am very happy with the result. Even with his experience, it took quite a while to complete both cars. We started at around 3:30 yesterday afternoon, and finished at 2:30am. It is a good bit of labor, but you can't beat having a new headliner and pillar pieces for $30 in material and $15 in contact cement.
As mentioned previously, this headliner material we found isn't nearly as thick as what you usually find, but it is still just a tiny amount thicker than the original material. It doesn't present any problems and everything still fits very well. I will try to update with pictures of it installed later.

Turns out the stepper motor inside BP's headlight assembly was the bad part. While working on his headlight assembly BP discovered exposed wiring inside so I used liquid electrical tape to seal the exposed wiring then we put everything back together. BP told me his headlights were perfect on his drive back home :)

If you haven't already, get the reinforcement plates for the shock towers. They are around $20 and just sit on top of the shock mount. Cheap insurance to avoid cracked and mushroomed shock towers

Speaking of rain....chose to not go on a mountain bike ride on Sunday and work on my zhp instead. Over the last few months, the valve cover has been leaking more and more and of course, it drips right onto the exhaust manifold and thus lets off that awesome burning oil smell. My wife has not been happy smelling like burnt oil everywhere she goes....so Sunday turned out to be the best day for it.

Now that the bank account / car fund is flush again... time to buy more parts for the ZHP and get her ready to be brilliant on track! And there should be plenty left over to start a go-kart build with my 6-yr-old twins. Time to get them in the garage!

Now that the bank account / car fund is flush again... time to buy more parts for the ZHP and get her ready to be brilliant on track! And there should be plenty left over to start a go-kart build with my 6-yr-old twins. Time to get them in the garage!
very cool! i am doing a go-kart build with my 8-year old son this spring/summer. well, it's going to be a bit of a riding mower/rat rod kind of thing. it will be cool.

Sweet!!!! Love it.
We have a bunch of land around here, and I have very safety-conscious in-laws :) So we're going with a full roll-caged build. I'm going to grab a friend's when his kids are done with it. Engine and chassis are decent, and it will give me a good starting place. I want to do a lot of upgrades, but need to learn to do basic welding first. Can't wait!

Sold her stable-mate. It was hard to let my '96 Miata go. She'd gotten me through some rough personal times. But with the kids starting school, she was parked all the time. Fortunately, I was able to sell her to a fellow Texas track enthusiast. She should be well cared for.
NO!!!!!!!!!!! You WILL miss her and regret it! :(

I will indeed miss her. But she won't be the last roadster I'll own. When my kids graduate from the "go-kart" build we have next on our plate, I'm hoping to try my hand at something like a Spec Miata build or perhaps a Time Trial car. But I want them to do it with me, and I want to start with something near stock so we can have the pride that comes from a full build.

That's tough, but probably wise if it just sits. As you say, you can take comfort in it going to an enthusiast! I'm going to be very sad when my father sells his '94 Miata, which he hopes to do by the end of the year.

Sometimes you just have to let it go. Seth let his 2 M3s go and we just had to let go of our X1 M-Sport because we don't need it.
They'll always be another car...
We're going to do a similar project with our kids when they are old enough... Golf carts ;)

A rigid hard coat is no substitute for a soft and flexible wrap. While a rigid coat is great for minimizing scuffs and oxidizing, XPEL wrap can ward off chunks taken out from high speed frontal debris. I do a lot of highway driving and my whole frontal area are in pristine condition which XPEL is supposed to last for 10 years. Plus any light scratch the XPEL receives will self heal within minutes back to its original glossy state.
Wrap like Xpel Ultimate is great for parts that are subject to flying objects like mirrors, hood, fenders etc. However for lenses a coating would be more ideal IMO

The plastic lenses on our car are so hard and brittle. Highway crap sand blasts them to nowhere land. Lenses are pretty cheap considering the price of XPEL.

So I'm a moron.
Bought the strut reinforcement plates and didn't really pay attention to the threads here. Got all excited to install them under my M3 strut tower brace and realized I need to sandwich them between the mount and the turret. I don't mind dropping the strut out, but I think I'll wait until it warms up enough to feel my fingers. Might as well combine that with the new FCABs sitting on my bench and while it's apart maybe control arms too.
Oh, and the front right wheel bearing is singing me the sound of it's people on left sweeping turns. Looks like that needs attention too. FAG or SKF, anyone got a preference?

Replaced the plastic insert in the hood cowling. I've had it sitting in the parts cabinet since list fall and just hadn't gotten around to it.
It's probably kind of wasteful because the old one is just a little grey, has some wax in it, and could probably be adequately cleaned up or painted, but it's the little things, and there nothing like a new piece.

I won't daily drive it. For some reason, I hate the thought of just driving to work and back only to leave the car baking in the hot sun all day. I'll drive it on the weekends all the time, out to dinner, and probably a day or two a week at work when it isn't going to be 102.
My wife says red,and I like it, but I'm also thinking of blue and maybe painting the calipers blue at some point. Decisions.
I'm going to drive it to the BMWCCA meet at the Bohemian Sunday, then on the lake drive next Sunday, then I'm going to park the car in the garage, get the wheels and tires done, and while that's happening, send the wheel off to Coby. Also, while it's on stands, I plan to do the FCABs. Other than an alignment and oil change, it shouldn't need anything else all summer.
Once the car is in the garage on stands week after next, you can expect the weather to be extraordinarily beautiful. ;-)

I definitely feel ya on that! Some days I really hate leaving my car outside. I currently don't have garage access either so the zhp is outside almost 24/7.
My collection of parts waiting to be installed is starting to pile up so I'm really excited for warmer weather! I refuse to work on my car when its too cold to feel your fingers haha.

Yesterday I spent some time with the new to me sedan, performed a baseline maintenance -
-Transmission Fluid - Redline D4
-Differential Fluid - Redline 75/90
-Brake Fluid Flush - ATE Typ200
-Power Steering Flush - Redline D4
-Engine Oil & Filter - Motul 5/30 & MANN
-Replaced heater blower motor
-Replaced cabin air filter - Corteco
-Replaced engine air filter - MANN
-Replaced upper radiator hose - OE
-Replaced Radiator - Behr
-Coolant "flush"/Drain refill - OE BMW & Distilled
-Replace spark plugs - Bosch
-Ordered a Soundplicity III
I still need to replace the driveshaft flex disc, install the Z4M front control arm bushings, rebuild the shift linkage (feels a bit sloppy), and a new differential rear carrier bushing.
I also discovered the tire shop the previous owner used to have the new Continental tires installed just before I purchased the car did not pay attention to the staggered wheels - so the 225's are mounted on the 8.5" width wheels, and the 255's are on the 8" wheels... I'll have one of my techs swap those next week. Then the car will get a complete detail, and by then the roads should be clean enough to actually register and start driving it.

That valve cover is the M56 (325 SULEV) valve cover. Metal instead of plastic so it should be more durable. It also has a PCV built in, allowing you to hopefully delete the failure prone PCV from the M54

Next weekend, Vanos and CCV. And a wash, since it will be covered in pollen and look dusty as Fuuu.

Probably smart to leave it. Hope all of that maintenance will lead you closer to resolving your issues.
As for me, I got my new APEX ARC-8 17x8.5" ET40 Hyper Black wheels from the group buy mounted with Continental ExtremeContact DW 245/40R17 tires. I think they look great (ignore the dirt)! Now to find some BMW hub caps...

Going to drop it off for a bath in a solvent tank next, then I'll be ready to swap it in on the first nice spring day.
i'm VERY curious to see how this turns out!! is that an actual PCV? or a CCV?
look how clean the post-valve chamber is!

Had to take the left side fuel level/suction jet pump out to investigate why my car went dead with 70 miles left on the OBC. I tightened the main hose that clips to the bottom of the unit. The clip that is known to break is still here!!
Does anyone know exactly what the parameters of when fuel is sent from left to right to prevent fuel starvation?
I've been monitoring the secret OBC 6.1 to see how much fuel is on each side of the saddle fuel tank in real time.
Yesterday I spent some time with the new to me sedan, performed a baseline maintenance -
-Transmission Fluid - Redline D4
-Differential Fluid - Redline 75/90
-Brake Fluid Flush - ATE Typ200
-Power Steering Flush - Redline D4
-Engine Oil & Filter - Motul 5/30 & MANN
-Replaced heater blower motor
-Replaced cabin air filter - Corteco
-Replaced engine air filter - MANN
-Replaced upper radiator hose - OE
-Replaced Radiator - Behr
-Coolant "flush"/Drain refill - OE BMW & Distilled
-Replace spark plugs - Bosch
-Ordered a Soundplicity III
I still need to replace the driveshaft flex disc, install the Z4M front control arm bushings, rebuild the shift linkage (feels a bit sloppy), and a new differential rear carrier bushing.
I also discovered the tire shop the previous owner used to have the new Continental tires installed just before I purchased the car did not pay attention to the staggered wheels - so the 225's are mounted on the 8.5" width wheels, and the 255's are on the 8" wheels... I'll have one of my techs swap those next week. Then the car will get a complete detail, and by then the roads should be clean enough to actually register and start driving it.
That's a ton of work, good job!!

- Refinished the passenger door armrest black cube trim (yesterday)
- Installed ECS Black Gloss front grills to replace the OE chrome that had numerous broken clips
- Used Carly for BMW to turn off all of the DRLs and activate the triple blink for short turn signal press
Next on the list:
- Oil change
- C Pillars fix
- Waiting for the rest of the parts for the cooling system refresh to be performed next week
- Full detail with paint correction

Carly for BMW is very limited in terms of coding capabilities for the E46 compared to what it can do on the E9x or E8x platforms. If Carly can do it, I imagine most of the more powerful coding systems can do it as well for the E46. I had the triple blink on my e90 and have it now on my E84 (besides the E46).

I had to initially guide them into the tube and make sure that they remain straight in. Of course, that's just me and on my Frontier. ECS' might have a thicker wire stick????

You need an LCM with software version 4.0 or higher to have this feature. Only late '05 and '06 coupes/verts had it from the factory, and even then it had to be coded.
The only way to get it is to by having a version that's 4.0 or higher, than code VIN and mileage to the LCM and code the triple blink to be enabled.
You can either buy a used one and code the VIN and mileage or maybe have it flashed by terra if he's still offering the service and IF your LCM meets the requirements.

Yes, I guided my wire dipstick when I insert it into the dipstick tube but then I do the same for my OE dipstick. I still get a good level so I'm not too bothered by the wobbliness of the wire... I like having a billet aluminum dip stick in my engine bay :)

Removed the driver's side fog light. When removing the damaged one and temporarily tucking away the wires, they must have gotten tangled up in something. When I tried to pull out the wire to plug in the replacement light, it had barely any slack in it. Out came the intake and headlight, only to find the wire tucked around something else, holding it up. All's well now.
I also lined up the clamp screw heads on the intake and the Stett boot so they're all facing the same angle upwards. :biggrin

In order to get one touch - triple blink you need an LCM that has software 4.0 or 4.5
If you have an LCM with older software this feature is not available and you can't use PA Soft to activate this feature. BP made a thread on this[emoji1360] I think it is in the DIY section...

Only 2006 E46s came with a new enough LCM to have the triple blink feature. 2004 and 2005 LCMs can be upgraded. 2003 and older LCMs would have to be replaced. If you're interested, let me know and maybe we can work something out

Likely motul or Castroil Although I have historically used Mobil one in all my other cars.
But this engine is really high strung and all the internals are forged or titanium.
When new, BMW specified 15W-50 weight mineral oil in the S14. However, running a 15W-50 weight synthetic oil, or a thinner synthetic like a 10W-40 provides the same or better protection as the 15W-50 weight mineral oil in all cases, with none of the drawbacks.
Thinner oil flows easier, faster, and carries heat away from surfaces quicker with less work required from the oil pump, and less resistance on the crank. Thinner, high quality synthetic oil also flows better in the cooler weather along with equal to or better film strength than mineral oil of a higher viscosity meaning longer life of all lubricated components.
Oil is one of those products that everyone has a favorite. And it can be quite a point of contention between folks.
I will reconsider Amsoil and Redline as well.

My S14 is presently being overhauled due to rod bearings knock....and then some more when we opened it up...Pandora came out.
But anyway, 3 local M3 S14 techs (all well known) plus Mike Miller highly recommend 20w50 conventional/mineral oil. Using synthetic was the cause of all the engine wear. 20w50 especially for SoCal weather. Synthetics for newer BMW engines.
"Initially, I agree that 5W-30 oil is too light for an S14 (and many other engines) unless you’re driving in Arctic temperatures.
As for synthetic vs. mineral oil, I don’t really care but it should be 20W-50 year-round in the San Diego climate. I use Kendall GT-1 20W-50 in engines built during the S14 era. Synthetic theoretically lasts longer but the S14 runs so rich I wouldn’t leave any oil in the engine past 5,000 miles.
Now, as for the engine wear, it could be the result of normal driving without enough oil viscosity, but it impresses me more as the result of racetrack driving and lots of it, probably with software that increases the redline, and possibly with detonation resulting from 11:1 compression pistons – they require racing fuel. Pump gas doesn’t have enough octane.
As for the Internet folks, you will get a different answer from everyone you ask about engine oil." - Mike Miller

Just installed an auto dimming / home link/ compass mirror in my ZHP. Fairly straightforward install, but a bit of a pain to fish the wires where they need to go. I used the official retrofit harness and tapped into the reverse signal block and got power from a switched connection in the fuse box (fuse 24). If your car doesn't have a ground already wired up, you can easily just tap into the grounding block over there.
My car for some reason had the BMW assist wiring despite not having BMW Assist (probably why I already had a ground connection). If you do this retrofit, make sure you remove pins 4, 5, 6, and 7 from the mirror connector, otherwise you can damage the new mirror.

The one I got was from an E90. I think BMW changed the mirror mount for the F-series BMWs, but otherwise pretty much everything is backwards and forwards compatible (just have to make sure you remove the BMW Assist pins in the case of the E46 since those pins serve other purposes on other BMWs)

1. That old lady sounds awesome. I hope she's using that power's potential.
2. Is that an S5 or an RS5? I assume it's the former.
3. I think that would be a great acquisition for the reasons you mentioned. I have two family friends that have them and have very few bad things to say about them. I test drove one as a part of my local BMW dealership's test drive event to compare similar cars to the 435i X-Drive. I thought the S5 held it's own well against the competition, even though I preferred the 435i.
Let us know what you end up doing.
I got mine off eBay

And I brought this home for a night. I am very very tempted to buy it to replace the S4 instead of an F80. The F80's are A. everywhere now B. Fast but don't have a raw feel C. I can get this car for a wicked good buy through the Audi dealer I sell at D. wow, that's a tough call - the F80 M3 is pretty. prettier than an RS5, in my opinion - and the RS5 is a good looking machine! i can't imagine an audi feeling more raw than an M3.... however, i have heard the RS5 is a different beast (the S5 was a dud, apparently).
my dad has a 2007 RS4 cab (in glut orange - 1 of 1!), and it is the rawest audi i've ever driven (i've owned a lot of them). the steering, brakes, engine, NOISE - it's all there. the seats are not great, for me - otherwise i would actually consider getting one. they are awesome otherwise. how is the RS5 in comparison? i'm sure you've spent time behind the wheel of a B7 RS4.

that's an RS5. the boxed flares give it away. :cheers

Right you are. I've wanted to drive and/or ride in the B7 RS4 for so long. I still lust after that car.

yeah. in 6 years, i could import a LHD B7 RS4 Avant from europe, with the optional recaros (the ones that actually say 'recaro' on them - i think they're leather/alcantara mix) - now we're talking... :)
in 1 year i can start looking at importing a LHD euro E46 330i M Sport Touring... 6-speed of course. :) ideally we could go on a family vacation, and buy one while we're over there. :)

I don't know yet. It's pouring out. LOL and I failed at taking my mushy RTABs out. Even broke the RTAB tool. [emoji24] So I'll have to fix that and align before I even test everything out.
The ride quality is firm but not as harsh as OEM. The shocks are taking up sharp bumps and smoothing them out.

Whoa. For a second I thought you had the car supported by that spring!

i'm VERY curious to see how this turns out!! is that an actual PCV? or a CCV?
look how clean the post-valve chamber is!
Yeah it clearly did its job. That is technically a CCV and those chambers serve the oil-air-seperation function, although, I dont know the difference between a PCV and CCV :) I thought they were the same thing.
I've been using a oil catch can since the TS2 removed the stock CCV and oil seperator and just uses a "PCV" instead, which is actually the CCV off a 318i. Using the M56 valve cover with built in CCV and oil-air-seperator I can ditch the oil catch can and still prevent the goop from getting sucked in through the blower and intake.

Installed tranny mounts, bled brakes, swapped winter wheels for 135/PSSs. Took her on a spirited run out in the country. Tried the Koni fronts at 0, but it was too soft. Dialed them to 3/4 for now--better.
Old mounts were very soft and mailable.

I didn't get into first much, but it did seem to go in easier. I hope that keeps up.

I replaced the fuel filter earlier today with a new Mahle filter. I had a feeling that the filter I was going to replace was the original 12 yr old filter with 129k miles, and it was. Clearly could see the April 2004 date stamp on the filter. Surprisingly, very little 'gunk' came out of the old filter. I replaced the small vacuum line as it was falling apart, and used new BMW clamps.
I'll be replacing the hazard/lock switch in the center console in a few minutes. My tape repair on the original switch only lasted a week before the lock switch quit again.

Nice job.
Thanks I also played around with the smoke machine I bought from Drummrxx. I may have detected a small leak down near the lower intake boot but it was hard to tell and I was too lazy to take it any farther apart. Maybe another day...
