Had my windows tinted with 35% Llumar ceramic film yesterday. It's still drying. It's been raining here for several days, so I installed the OEM Sirius module for my Business radio. Purchased from getbmwparts.com (https://www.getbmwparts.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=MorePartInfo&PartID=871755&siteid=214672&catalogid=4462) with a 1-year trial subscription, Priced dropped significantly the day I ordered it. Complete PnP installation, no issues. Thanks to the DIY threads for the assistance.

Small aesthetic mods...

Bimmian M3 style grey gauge faces:
23403
23404
23405

They look great, just can't get the gas gauge needle to be in the correct place when the car is off! Anyone else do this mod and get it fixed? All the other ones are fine.

Bimmian red piping, accents some red stitching alcantara goodies I have.

Brain is fried, just caught up on about 20 pages of this thread, 40 post per page? Something like that, can't do math right now, ha.

Tried out some BMW branded windshield wiper fluid concentrate in the i3 today, yippee, only cost about $9 but I think I'll get the $3 jug from walmart next time.

She's also charging in the shop at work right now. Lots to update, will update "project" thread, most notable change is H&R Springs, dropped her 1.25" and has transformed the way the car handles, with little to no deterioration in ride quality.

It's plastic, so far I have it just in the doors. It fits pretty much anywhere so I want to try it in some other places like the center console. Here is the link from Bimmian if you want to check it out:

@bosszhp: How is the gas gauge not correct? Also, how does the gauge do in different levels of light? It seems like the white numbers on light gray gauge background would wash out in certain light conditions. They look awesome in your photos though.

@UDubBadger: Looks good, what changes were there between your old trunk and tails and the LCI ones?

@johnrando: Why the switch from 12mm to 10mm? And I like the black California plates! They remind me of our simple Oregon blue plates.

johnrando
01-02-2016, 06:46 AM
I only bought 12mm as that was all I could get at the time I was installing my BBK. I needed spacers to fit the kit on, so they were front only. With my car, 12mm doesn't fit in the rear, so I finally got 10's and installed them all the way around (I'm 8.5 square on the wheels).

Haven't been out driving in over a week, so since it was a bright and shiny day I drove to 'The Costco' for some minor grocery shopping.

As I returned to the vehicle a very nice older couple complimented me on the car. I began to explain to them what it was, but I kind of got a glazed over look from both of them. They said they noticed the pretty orange color, then it finally clicked for me. :facepalm

I was able to correct the gas gauge needle so that's not a problem anymore. If it is really sunny out and the interior lights are off the white numbers can be a little hard to see but it doesn't bother me at all. I really like the look and it looks great with my silver cube trim! On another note, right after I fixed the gas needle and started the car it had a cylinder one misfire. Time for some new spark plugs and a new coil for cylinder one!

Yep, that's the typical scenario in South Florida... I stopped to compliment a guy on his very nice looking 4 series convertible.. You know how nice summer tires are sticky when it's warm/hot outside? Well that is how the winter tires feel when it's cold outside.

225 section width is skinny for the rear though but still plenty of grip.

I'm going to drive my imola sedan only when I have to since it's on summers.

You know how nice summer tires are sticky when it's warm/hot outside? Well that is how the winter tires feel when it's cold outside.

225 section width is skinny for the rear though but still plenty of grip.

I'm going to drive my imola sedan only when I have to since it's on summers.

Winter tires are great

Maybe I'll do that tomorrow.

You'll be pulling 1G turns in the X5 for sure ;)

Big $$$$$ tires Jon

There won't be any 1G turns in the X5... There have been 4 wheel slides in the past, hoping to avoid those a bit now, they are definitely hair raising experiences in something that big!

And as for the tire prices, actually, I got a SMOKING deal on these, about $600 less than Tire Rack, which is pretty reasonable. And that being said, the PSS are about $4-500 less than the Dunlop runflats I was running before. I'm pretty happy...

Updates for me, another small mod on the M3 today... Pics coming soon.

Way too cold to attempt the retrofit right now though, even with a garage. Supposed to get into the 40s Friday though, so maybe I'll do it then. The ones without the sport button are pretty rare, so I jumped on this one when I found it. If I ever figure out how to enable the sport mode functionality on the MS45.1, then maybe I'll retrofit the M3 piece.

Because JR. It's what he does. Cool pl8 mate!

:facepalm

Didn't see this until I'd reinstalled it. I think the wires did have a black wrapping. You have to go thru the trunk panel trim to get to the wire connection.

New Hella euro headlights for the M5. The adjusters are broken in the originals (a VERY common problem) and it's hell to disassemble them and fix them. As a result, the driver's side light points downwardEarlier lights can be baked open, mine are too new for that approach. Schmiedmann in Denmark sells E39 xenons for insanely cheap - $385 apiece. They're $800 and up over here. Received them in 3 days via FedEx. Being installed today. Already have the old ones sold for $250 for the pair.

I don't think so - they're made to slide down over the mounting bolts for the strut mounts, so I'd assume that the strut bar would interfere. Here's a couple of pics of them I stole from a Bimmerfest post...

They really do not look like they would cover the strut bar unless you do some cutting or reconfiguration. They look more like cosmetics to make the engine bay look smoother.

I bought them from ECS Tuning, but I suspect any BMW parts supplier can get them. Note that they are not a 'stock' item at ECS (or Bav Auto, from what I gather) so it may take a bit longer than usual to get them. Took a week for mine to show up.

I also installed the wheel studs that I bought from Daniel. It took a long time since it was my first time doing the VCG myself, and it took me a little while to figure out how much Loctite to use on the studs and how much torque to apply. what kind of impact gun do you have? this compressor should be powerful enough, it just doesn't have a lot of air capacity. my impact gun is rated for 500lb/ft i think.

the diff is doing well so far... granted, we've only had snow for 6 days so far, but have had it in some deeper stuff, slush, etc. DSC kicks in a lot less on take-off which is really the main area these cars aren't good in the snow. i also want to mash the gas a lot more, so perhaps now isn't the best time to give a solid opinion. ;)

what kind of impact gun do you have? this compressor should be powerful enough, it just doesn't have a lot of air capacity. my impact gun is rated for 500lb/ft i think.

I was researching oil coolers. Based on size, volume and number of rows etc...the oem m3 cooler would only be useful in a sub 100hp application.

The oem m3 adds .38L of volume. Only has two rows and makes only one pass. It doesn't seem like a very effective heat exchanger. Max btu exchange would be 9,000-14,000 per hour.

I went with a Setrab 16x3x2. It has ten rows and makes multiple passes. Rated for 230-310hp. And exchanges 42,000-60,000btu per hour. Its capacity is just under and quart. Can't remember exact number right now.

In an effort to replace parts and remedy a vacuum leak somewhere, I decided to replace the intake boots, idle control valve and rebuild the DISA unit (German Auto Solutions). Also installed the AFE cold air intake stage 1 (which probably results in more noise in the higher RPM than any real performance gains). We'll see if my dreaded check engine light comes back on after I get the codes cleared out.

They're aftermarket... they require the resistor boxes to be plugged in. No resistor box = error lights.

Technically that's just a faceplate, not an LCM. It is plug and play, though you'll need coding to make the rear fog lights actually illuminate. If you install it as-is, pressing the rear fog button will do nothing but illuminate the indicator for it on the cluster. No rear fogs will actually be active until it's coded.

The one you have is for 1) non-RLS equipped cars (Rain Light Sensor), and 2) vehicles without autoleveling, both of which your car has now. You can still use it, but the leveling rollers will do nothing and you won't have Auto capability.

Picked her up from my Indy yesterday to find a dead battery (not the first time) after they replaced my VANOS seals and did the rattle kit. Went straight to Pep Boys and grabbed a Bosch 94R battery and popped that in. As for the seals, I definitely feel an increase in low-end torque and overall it's a lot smoother. Nothing crazy but I am still in the break in so will report back after that, haven't done any "spirited" driving as per Beisan's recommendations. One other thing I noticed is I can still hear a faint clatter which I had before the rattle kit was installed, it is less noticeable now but I'm thinking maybe it's not related to the VANOS. Seems to go away when I push the clutch in, is this the "ZHP rattle" I hear a lot of people refer to? Is it possible to incorrectly install the rattle kit? I talked to the tech who did it and he said it was his first time doing it and didn't see what the difference was with the rattle kit O.o

When I hold the clutch in I can't hear it and most of the time when I depress the clutch after that it goes away and then comes back when I stop again. Seems to be less noticeable now with the VANOS rattle kit but it's still there. When I first got the car and started hearing that I read a lot about it and like you said everyone mentioned the lightweight flywheel as being the culprit or the bell housing which is different than non-ZHP cars, IIRC.

Its currently 5:30am, and 39* outside... I'm getting ready to wash both vehicles for today's Cars n Coffee... I know you Northeast folks have ZERO pity for me, but damn, this is our coldest morning of the year... I'm NOT looking forward to this!
Use waterless wash. No need to freeze your hands off and could do it in your garage.

No worries, neither of them were actually that dirty... The X5 was in the garage and just needed a quick detail spray and wipe... The M3 was outside, covered in dew, so I used that to give it a quick wet wipe, and then wiped it again with detail spray and a dry microfiber... Both looked pretty good at the show...

Have fun. Hope Jon's car is ok.

Yeah, I saw him, apparently his fender bender wasn't in the M3, so his car was fine...

I can think of another one, being able to buy a badass X5M for your wife to haul the kids around in! Although I'm not quite there yet, on the kids part that is. I have a lot more coupes to go through before I reach that stage, and even after that at least one year of a car seat in an M3, then maybe an SUV ;)

Well, you see, the C&C event is held at the outlet mall... I asked the wife to drive with me. She was forced into 2 hours of C&C as the event started at 9, but the outlets didn't open until 11. Of course, she didn't get home until 2pm, and the event was finished at 12... :shift

I don't think the X5 has the capacity to tow the M3... But that would look AWESOME...

Hah... The X5 was what she wanted... We happened into an M because I wanted a toy. I did sell my ZHP, so the fun car was missing. In hindsight, some days I should've kept the ZHP...

Oh yea, the e70 will tow it... can tow 6000 lbs but not an M version... there is no place for a hitch with that fancy rear bumper... It's not really setup for towing anyway.... it's setup to be fast :)

I beg to differ!! Stu can chime in, but I know he has a hitch, and I've seen others with the hitch. Most have to cut the bumper for the receiver to be exposed, but Stu mounted his downward so the hitch receiver was hidden... And he does tow with it!!

You can either use the oem BMW unit - but you have to cut bumper. Or you can use an invisible hitch system like mine (European design) and when you remove the receiver..you can see anything

Ordered for the wife's X3:
- Eccentric Shaft Actuator Seal
- Variable Timing Unit Gasket

Ordered for the ZHP:
- 20 lug bolts
- 4 center cap emblems
- 4 stick-on ///M emblems

Wheels get powder-coated and will wear brand new Michelin PSS's in Feb/Mar. Can't wait!

Ordered it all from AutohausAZ. It would be nice if one place would stock all OE parts. Every time I need 6 or 8 things, I can never get it all from one place. So, either I have to suck it up and wait a week because the east coast is the center of the auto parts universe, pay shipping twice (and wait a week), or order from someplace in the west and accept an OEM part or two. In this case, it was the VictorReinz version of the eccentric shaft actuator seal. It was less than half the price of the BMW part, and everything else was cheaper, so I went ahead with AutohausAZ. Hopefully the VR part is a good one. Planning to do the valve cover gasket in the next week or two.

Fun, fun!

Cool, thanks. I've ordered from them a couple of other times too and had no issue. I was more wondering about the VictorReinz gasket. I know everybody has their opinions on OE vs. OEM, but I do like getting stuff with the BMW logo on it whenever possible. The valve cover gasket set I already have is BMW, and so is the timing shaft gasket, so it's just the eccentric shaft gasket. Probably fine, but I hate that nagging sensation... Apparently, it's a pretty big job, so I certainly don't want to do it twice.
