I drive 30-32k miles a year. How much does the 135i get driven? 2 months would not be a fair estimate in my case. I'm worried about having to do it every week, because I WILL forget and I am most definitely very lazy. The less I have to do the better.
See my point above. How many miles do you drive in a week? How often do you empty your catch can?
I hear ya BP. I used to drive 100 to 200 miles a day at my last job

Finished up my brake pad and rotor replacement, sprayed the lower mesh grille semi-gloss black which is now drying, and applied Bimmian ///M color stickers to the passenger side grille. Not sure if I'll keep the stickers on, but I like them for now.

Cleaned, clay barred, and polished.
I still need to treat the top, then she'll be all set for winter.

My mechanic came to replace my oil pan gasket, OFHG, (M3) motor mounts, thermostat with housing, lower radiator hose and a oil change. Everything turned out well but the mechanic said as soon as he loosened the bolt holding the motor mounts the mount fell apart, I'm just glad I ordered those replacement parts [emoji28]

I got the same E46 M3 mounts. It was just enough of a change to make it feel like my E30 did when at idle, like there was actually some kind of a life force up front instead of it being totally numb. I really like it even to this day.

So how did you introduce more vacuum into crankcase? Pics.
i don't have any pics.
you're effectively disconnecting the stock CCV system and replacing it with these parts:
- catch can
- 3/4" high-pressure oil-friendly hose
- 5/8" high-pressure oil-friendly hose
- hose clamps
- 5/8" PCV valve (i can dig up the part # if needed, it is posted somewhere on this forum)
here's how it can be setup:
- 3/4" hose routed from outlet in valve cover, to inlet on catch can.
- 3/4" hose routed from outlet on catch can to 5/8" reducer
- 5/8" hose routed from reducer to 5/8" PCV valve, mounted vertically (i have mine underneather the intake manifold)
- 5/8" hose routed from PCV valve to severed OEM intake manifold CCV connector (this is the vacuum source). this concludes the vacuum portion.
- remove and cap oil drain hose inlet on dipstick tube that ran from the old CCV unit

i don't know how much i drive per week, but we average about 20K miles per year on the ZHP. i empty it every 3-4 months from april til november. in the sub-zero months i check it often because i am paranoid about freezing oil vapor mayo. if i was using the stock CCV i would be freaking out.
i'm actually going to be implementing a heater system for the catch can to keep the oil vapors from freezing.

very easy. same mount for both sides. if you have about 18"-24" of socket extensions that will help a lot (one with a wobble end will help on the passenger side).

That's not so bad for intervals. Only thing I'd be worried about is it freezing based on what you said. I've never had an issue with the stock CCV setup other than the mayo and maybe some oil consumption. Still unlikely I'll convert though, just seems like more maintenance to me. :dunno

No. The transmission mounts are under the transmission, which is further down towards the middle of the car. They're not very far though, and are easier to do IMO.

yeah, i can appreciate that. even though we drive the ZHP a lot, my car can sit for days at a time sometimes - which is prime for CCV/catch can freeze-ups in the winter time if it's well below zero. if you drive on a daily basis and get the car nice and warm, you likely won't have any freezing issues. also, it's warmer in CT. :)
we had 45 days straight of below-freezing weather last winter - most of those days got down to -20ºC. not good for CCV/PCV system oil vapors!

I couldn't find a real detailed DIY. basically you'll find 2 long black tabs on the top that need to be pushed in towards the trunk, there is also 2 clips on the bottom that you need to be careful not to break. (I broke mine) and then use a t30 to remove the armrest. Then there is one more bolt holing some fabric that's attached to the ski bag cassette and I believe it's a t50? Remove that, put the armrest back on and you're all done!

Well, I bought myself another ZHP last week. Was initially shopping for any 330i or 530i, but this one popped up locally. Not in the greatest shape cosmetically, but mechanically the car is solid. For the price, I don't care. Starting school next year and didn't want to take the M3 down with me. It's jet black on alcantara. Seats are in reasonable shape except for the driver bolster.
Don't plan to do real mods, I have my M3 for that. Did a couple that were freebies for me:
LCM Triple Flash
Rear fog retrofit
M3 Cluster Retrofit (and yes, the oil temp gauge works)
Otherwise I've just got some maintenance planned over the next couple months.
Just did an oil change today.
Plan to do a cooling system flush and refresh in the immediate future
Need to deal with the ZKW headlights (haven't decided whether I'm doing evox-r or AL assemblies yet)
Steering wheel needs to be rewrapped
Front license plate delete strip (okay, that's a mod technically, but it needs to be done ;))
Here's a picture with both of my dirty E46s

It was meant to be. Enjoy it, looks like a solid car. You should be able to get it cleaned up nicely, and it'll certainly make a great daily driver. I've toyed around with the idea of picking up another ZHP myself, seeing as mine isn't exactly the most comfortable to drive anymore.
Nice pick-up. Year? Miles?
Btw how did you go about getting the cluster to show that the rear doors open? I was highly considering putting an M3 cluster and making it work mostly for the oil temp gauge.

It's a 2004 with 165k miles.
Rear doors I haven't actually done yet, but I know how. You have to install the LEDs and appropriate resistors -- the spot is there, just unpopulated. When I get around to doing that part (maybe this weekend) I'll post details. It is tough to buy LEDs that match the stock color exactly, so I would recommend either salvaging them from another cluster or just replacing all of them so that they all match each other.

No write up since I didn't write one yet.
Everything works except the warmup LEDs (which can be made to work with an arduino or something along those lines)

As it sits, the wrong redline is shown (but the car will still stop at 6800). Eventually I plan on having something sit on the CAN-bus to trigger the warm up lights, and have them stop at 6500 or 7000RPM. And I might change the 7000 and 7500 LEDs from orange to red.

You should see how is BMWs park at the office. LOL. Sometimes we just double parallel park in front of the ones who have pulled in. Sometimes we park along side the front door and leave it there. Haha

Finally bedded the brakes last night using Hawk's bedding in procedure. I drove it home carefully afterwards to let it cool, so I'll have to test it out later. Might do it again.

Started my up on Thurs, and it started missing - P0301. Had to limp it home, but we made it. Swapped the coil with #2, and the code moved. That simplifies things a bit!
So today.. installed 6 new coils & spark plugs. 91,500 miles on the clock, so I figured I might as well. She's running smoooooth. Got back from a road test, and my new plates were in my box....

I had this setup on the 323ci for about a year. It's very good for what we wanted it for. Nice compliant ride but has returns when you really want it. We've used it for 3 HPDE's (AMP, RRR, and RA) on my car and is a great cross. She wanted it and we use my car for track, so it was better to get something a little more track oriented for mine. That's why we got the PSS-10's for my car.

When I get around to suspension, I was thinking pss10, but don't know if I can justify the cost. Are they really that superior to the non adjustable PSS? I'd probably never play with the adjustments. I've adjustable coils on my Miata and haven't touched them.

Depends on what you like as far as firmness. We absolutely love the PSS non-adjustable. The PSS-10's set at ~3 is where the PSS are in relation to how firm they are and is probably where I will keep the 10's at except for track days. Set at 10 results in a ride that makes things rattle in the cabin over bumps and was noticeable when my wife followed me. "Looked bouncy" was her quote. Bilstein Sports are probably a 5-6 on the PSS-10's.
Again, just our opinion. The ONLY reasons I went to PSS-10's on my 323 was we track my car and I couldn't find another set of decent used PSS non-adjustable.

Yes and yes. If you want a gauge of where they'd be on your car at lowest setting. The rears with spring pads installed and the adjustment rings in as well would put the rear at 24.175" to the fender lip. The fronts I adjusted to match and was 4 turns up from full bottom. Think the fronts would go down for front rake to another .25" lower.

Haven't driven spirited enough to really get a feel for the new brake setup since it has rained pretty much nonstop for the last week. I did bed them following Hawk's procedure during a break in the rain, but I think I might go and do it again in a few days to really set down a nice film. So far though no complaints. I did notice that they don't quite have the initial bite of the OEM pads.

Yup, I noticed that there was no bite as well but, also noticed a shorter stopping distance. Before the Hawk 5.0s, I was using Mintex from Bav Auto so, I can't really compare them to BMW OEM.

well, the benefit to an adjustable setup is that you can corner-balance the car, and adjust the damping per road conditions (say, family trip vs spirited driving, or track days). i wanted the PSS10 but i ended up getting the PSS because it was about half the price. and everything i read about the PSS suggested that bilstein nailed the damping for a daily driver, and i have to say - after almost 1000 miles of mixed driving, i'm inclined to agree.
for height adjustments, i was happy with then ZHP stock ride height so my car is setup pretty close to that. perhaps a tad lower up front. travel is good.

i'm running 4 turns up from the bottom on the rears with all pads in, and 7 turns up in the front (well, 7 turns visible below the lock ring - that's about 9-10 turns up, basically at the top of the adjustment range.
Pss or Koni yellow though.
that was what i was deciding between before i bought the PSS. i was going to get custom-valved externally-adjustable rears from Ground Control though.

BP picked up that lightly used set from the po in CT for me hence my "wub" of him in the earlier post :)
Also: Saving this for my car Peter as I'll probably follow suit, the driveways I encounter on a regular basis I'd scrape on constantly if I was too much lower than stock.

yep. too low is generally never a good idea for a street car. :)
i'm very pleased with mine. it's maybe 5-10mm lower than stock up front, and i have zero issues with clearance - or bump travel! i'm so pleased with them.

I've ran mine at bottom for as long as I've had the PSS systems on my car. Never had any issues, but location and roads play a big part in that. Not so low that I have to run camber plates or arms.

fronts, no - easier. jack up front, adjust. no need to remove wheel, there is room for access.
rears, yes - but a bit more fiddly. jack up rear, remove wheels, unbolt lower rear shock bolt, push hub down to relieve tension on spring, then adjust by hand (there is no room to get the adjusting wrench in there). this sounds like a pain, but you'll spend a few days fiddling with it and then you'll be all set.
i made 2 adjustments for front and rear after the initial install, and i love how it sits.

Somewhat. Part of it goes in the gas tank, part of it goes into the oil and the third part goes into the intake manifold through a vacuum port.
If you pour it into the oil, you have to do an oil change shortly after driving the car for a certain amount of miles

I used the "F" shaped vacuum line that goes into the upper intake boot. I've used it on a bunch of my vehicles without issue, but the ZHP was the least phased by it going in (normally they stall or want to), and had the hardest time running after the 20 minute wait. It did clear up after a minute or two of a lot of throttle, and a lot of smoke.

LOL I don't know. My car did run better during the cold starts and it felt like it accelerated smoother first thing in the morning with no hesitations. I don't think I'd bother doing it again though. I'm not sure if it was coincidental that a short time after I needed to replace my pre cat O2 sensors or if it was just time.
Now I'd just use the ATF fluid in the crankcase flush before I did an oil change. Which I've done with my past ZHP and my current car.

Bad news is we didn't discover that until we'd already removed the PITA inner and outer ball joint nuts... But at least we hadn't removed the whole control arm. They actually appear to be in good shape (for Meyles...)
Thanks for the assist from NovaPhotog (Dan) and Don Adolpho with his wicked cool ratcheting breaker bar!

Didn't get to the LSD but got the exhaust hanging out of the way and removed rear sway bar and loosened the Torx nuts on both axels. Car is still on jack stands in the garage and I hope do work on it more this next week.

Let me know how you like it at that setting, it feels like the sweet spot for me.
And that is annoying about having to sell the arms, but I'm sure it won't take long for someone to snatch them up from you. Or you could keep them if your control arms are getting old.

Will do. The tears seemed really firm. I think I had them at about 2 turns.
I may keep them as my son's car will eventually need them. How's just over 100k now.
Hoping to get to the diff this weekend.

Finally broke down and ordered the pre-painted rear deck spoiler from Bav Auto. Apparently some of the early cars came without them and I've been debating whether or not I really wanted to add it, but ultimately decided I like the looks better with the spoiler. 2-4 weeks for it to arrive they say, but the car isn't going anywhere during the winter!
Wish they offered a pre painted boot lid handle/light assembly.

Well. Was planning to replace front control arms as I thought the front left clunk was a bad ball joint. Well... Good news is It was simply the top end link that was loose.
I also removed and softened my rear Koni Yellows and adjusted the KW springs a tad higher.
Didn't get to the LSD but got the exhaust hanging out of the way and removed rear sway bar and loosened the Torx nuts on both axels. Car is still on jack stands in the garage and I hope do work on it more this next week.
Time for a liquor drink!

I'm also having the car played under this weekend - seriously, f*** those exhaust bolts.
I gave the car some well due gifts for its 400,000km birthday. Subframe was initially supposed to be bushings only, but they found a 5cm crack while pulling it out. Wish my car had been taken care of during the recall.
- Engine mounts
- Tranny mounts
- Cat replacement
- Oil pan gasket
- Drive shaft flex disc + CSB
- Full subframe overhaul with floor reinforcements

Sucks you had to have that done but it's one less thing you'll have to worry about ever again.
Do you know what reinforcement kit did they used? That doesn't look like the Turner kit or the Redish kit....

I'm picking up the car today, I'll ask them. From my understanding they're custom - they have quite a portfolio of restored E30s and E24s that had destroyed floors, so they probably commission their own steel plates for these jobs (and save customers some $$ in the process)

what kind of vacuum do you have?
i have a dyson canister vacuum. i bought it 3 years ago, second-hand, for less than half price - it is one amazing machine. i bought the canister model because it was more portable and definitely easier for bringing out to the garage to vacuum out the car. dyson has a 'car kit' with some nice bristly and long, skinny attachments that work well for upholstery, crevices, etc.
plus, this thing SUCKS, literally! :) it puts my shop vac to shame!

I still prefer the clean no front license look, but better this than a 200$ ticket after court fee's

Washed the 1 M in prep for upcoming detail session. Going to try out a new wax for kicks and grins to see if I like it. I've been using Collinite family of waxes what seems forever, but have a wild hair up a southern hemispherical region to try something different. For some odd reason the color attracted my interest. It's touted as a wax for warmer colored cars.
If it doesn't workout, maybe I can use the remainder as a substitute for marmalade. :fingerscrossed

Thanks guys. This was at the limit of my wrenching skills. Had to borrow some of my kids from time to time to assist with jacking and putting the car in/out of gear.
I would recommend renting the tools for the forward and rear diff bushings.

Got my wheel spacers and new air filter for my stage 2 afe. Original plan was just to put the filter on since it was 25 degrees outside . I got a wild hunch and decided to put on the spacers as well. I need to adjust the camber in the front a tad and either shave off, or remove the bumper clip on the rear. Other than that she sits nearly exactly how I want it to sit!
Hopefully it'll be warm enough to give her a good bath tomorrow! I'll be sure to get some shots on the dslr if I do.

I finally replaced my CCV system, intake boots, and rebuilt my DISA with a GAS unit. Not too bad of a job. About three hours. I've had the parts for months now!

Good job on the CCV. I hear it can be a bear. GAS DISA is actually kind of fun to do.

Finally got the ZHP off the jackstands. MFactory LSD is in, rear shocks loosened up a bit, loose front endlink tightened. Rainy and 52* here in VA. Took the car out for a quick check ride. It feels great! The 3.38 is exactly what I was looking for. Rolling start in 2nd!, nice pulling power in 3rd and 4th! Can't wait to get it broken in and really put it thru its paces.

Nicely done, I look forward to seeing what you think when you've gotten some miles on the setup!

Very cool. Did you just change out the lenses/cover the lenses or are they new headlight assemblies?

Those wheels look great where they sit! I also have always loved the way that Yakima rack looks. I'd love to have it on mine, but it would serve absolutely no purpose, haha

Which head unit is that, Eonon? How do you like it?

Nicely done. What prompted you to swap out your CCV system?
As for me, not today but over the last few days:
Installed ///M license plate cover in the front.
Swapped my cloth mats for BMW all weather mats
Installed my ProClip cell phone mount to my Bimmian mount (currently dismantled while the black spray paint for the mounting screws/nuts dries)
Swapped my alcantara shift boot and parking brake boot for leather ones.

Put all of the tools away from the diff and suspension work. I think I had just about every tool I own out!
Also changed the oil on Nolan's TDI.

With so much power from the S14...I really do not know if the body would be able to handle that engine. Body might slowly peel away from the speed. :thumbup
BTW, did you do your own S14 engine rebuild?

I'm sorry, I just find that hilarious. :rofl
While it's not nearly enough power to be a concern for the chassis, it sure is more than enough to provide some serious zoom. :thumbsup

Yes sir, VAC performed the head work. And local shop did the bottom end machining. I assembled everything.
Btw - I did weld in gusset plates I made to the front unibody/frame rails and to both subframes to support the additional power. And I welded in structural plates to known weak points (based on 50 years of folks racing these cars)

Stopped at my local dealer today and placed an order for a few little things for each vehicle... To be picked up tomorrow... While there, I also got a full all access tour of the new dealership (they completely rebuilt the whole property). Pretty impressive, and then I checked out the new 7 series... Wow, what a car...

New Pulley Day. I went into a store the other day and left the car idling. I came out and heard this whining from across the parking lot - sure enough, it was coming from my ZHP. Couldn't hear it inside at all. Glad I caught it - I had one go on my E38 and it made major mess of it.

I got 21mpg going thru the foot hills of Indiana in my Steptronic on the new I-69 that just opened.
Average speed ~85-ish.
I KNOW the 6M would get better mileage.
Car was also full of Xmas stuff and an overnight of clothes, 2 kids in heavy car seats, and wife.
Loved it though!
Going to head to Costco to have tires spun, ever so very slight vibration at 80 in the wheel.
Not sure that Costco does a fantastic job of balancing wheels. I much prefer road force balancing.

Road Force balancing is the way to go.
And it's done.
Had it balanced today. One of the wheels threw all its weights.
(must have been a new guy the first time around)
Now smooth as BUTTAH.

Not for the ZHP, but for the 330Ci: ordered valve cover gasket, OFHG, and Vanos rebuild kit. Already have the CCV kit, so hoping to dive in and do it all at once. Gonna be shut down for another month, so I can work away at it at a 'leisurely' pace...
