What did you do for your ZHP/ BMW / MINI today? #2

are y'all using the stock CCV? i think it has a lot to do with that and how that affects the piston rings sealing correctly (especially when it's all clogged up). i used to use about a liter every 2000 miles, now i don't really use any at all over a 4000 mile change interval after my catch can/PCV implementation. car runs so much better, too.

Installed new windshield and cowl. It was tough driving westward with the sun low on the horizon with the old windshield. Lots of pitting. Vision/clarity is vastly improved in all compass directions with the new windshield.

I tried the clears about 5 years ago and tried some stealth bulbs. They weren't as bright as stock. So I went back to ambers and stock bulbs. Maybe some LED bulbs would be bright enough?

Use the oem BMW silver bulbs. Nice and bright

I do plan to stay an active part of the family, and maybe even attend the reunion next year!

BCS_ZHP suggests replacing these green o-rings ever-other oil change. I guess they used to come with the Mann filters but don't any more.

I actually got an o-ring with the filter along with the washer... I did change the o-ring last time so didn't change it this time... Maybe I got an old filter!

Yes. That's what Bruce had told me. The newer car filters still have it. So now we have the part number to replace the small two.

This morning I thought about what a couple of people have said to me when I swapped over my winter tires. They asked why I did it so soon, since it was so nice out. Well, frost covered everything this morning, and my first thought was:

Well, its only the passenger side and that too only one of the three studs that is tilted quite bad - the one which is closest to the engine. Ayan (orange260z) and I tried putting a block of wood and pounding the stud to straighten it a bit but it did not seem to budge at all. I think we would need to drop the strut assembly and then pound the sheet metal flat and then use a new strut mount.

I do not have the reinforcement plates installed - that was on my to-do list when I would do a front strut overhaul. Part of the reason why I bought the strut brace was provide some additional support in order to prevent any further mushrooming till I got around to installing the reinforcement plates.

Spent my first real day going over the car since it was delivered. I updated the navigation firmware and maps - the new firmware has the //M logo. I also installed the new trunk mount spoiler, and had new tires put on. Tomorrow I am installing the door lock cover and the ///M pedals I bought. Than I am flying back to MA for the week. The day after thanksgiving the rim repair company is coming out to do all 4 wheels. I am off that week and plan on detailing the car and will post pictures. On a side note, the front splitter came in but I'm not crazy about them and might go with the following spoilers

Bought a new exhaust for the e30 and installed it today... it only take me about 20 minutes to install at this point. New system is bolt on bosal. I don't like how quiet it is but it will pass state inspection :(

Installed Valeo projectors. No glue, original shrouds, original screws, and a slight bit of Dremeling.

Yes regarding the retrofit. Nothing is lost/compromised. You still have full manually adjustments and the leveling motor.

We use the 2.5" version, its better in performance and fits better all around. very sharp cutoff due to clear lens.

I NEED to do my OFHG, and this was supposed to be the oil change to do it on. But, time wasn't on my side.

I manage to get the FCABs and oil changed plus swapped on my front winter wheels. I'l swap the rears tonight/tomorrow AM. Originally I was going to run my DWS wheels until snow flew, but it didn't make sense to put them back on, and do it all over again in a month.

Hopefully I can do the fuel pump tomorrow or Sunday.

The old FCABs came off with a small fight. Not a hard one. One of them pissed oilly fluid all over me.

I know the feeling! Two year old twins is why nothing gets done to my car... I can't even remember the last time I washed and waxed it... I think it was bimmerfest :)

Yup, the kids are a wonderful handful. It gets easier but you don't get the time back. Just hang a taxi sign on your car and drive them to all their activities later on. Between being a taxi driver (mostly in the wife's car fortunately) the no car wash rules due to the drought, and all the beach tennis tourneys Ness barely got any attention this summer/fall. That's why it was so nice to have that Vegas work done. I also bought some LED fog lights that BP recommended, looking forward to installing those.

New snow meats, VANOS oil line and seals, LOF, new belts, idler pulley, plugs and hugs.

My 2003 goes in next week:

Clutch (247k on original. Not slipping though), upper strut mounts and refreshing the shifter linkage. And hugs. Looking for wheels as I need to put snow meats on this one too.

I'm driving the Mini Cooper today. It has the Harmon Kardon system. To me it sounds better than the HK on the ZHP. I don't know if it's the design or reduced cabin space or ???

Both cars are the same year (2005) with similar miles (140,000) if that helps any to explain the difference.

Hi everyone, been MIA for a while, so here's a summary of what's been going on with my cars.


Put new Ground Control (centered) FCABs on my E36 M3. But wait, that's not how it started... I first put some other brand of all-poly FCABs in but one popped out at a track day. Maybe I installed them backwards, but IMHO they have a poor design. Some nice racers loaned me a set of Ground Control E36 offset FCABs so I could finish my track weekend (with some extra caster). Then I bought and installed the GC E36 centered FCABs, which feel good. Sad part is there was nothing wrong with my stock FCABs--I could have left them on there for the track weekend.
Replaced left (passenger) fuel level sender on E36. Old one cracked on top and started leaking gas when tank was full
Just registered ZHP as a salvage title, again, after driving it (or parking it) unregistered since April. This is all because of the track crash in July 2014. Since insurance company totaled it, DMV requires a new salvage title even though it was already a salvage title. Anyway, finally figured out out how to get a new salvage title and got new plates today. No more sneaking around in fear of the highway patrol giving me an expired tag ticket!
Polished side mirror glass on E36 with Griot's Garage fine glass polish, Griot's glass polishing pads, and 3" backing pad on a drill. Was able to remove stubborn hard water spots. Next up is taking the Griot's random orbital and 6" pads to windshield of the old Saturn which has many hard water spots from the sprinklers.
Polished E36 plastic headlight lenses with mix of Harbor Freight $10 drill-based restoration kit and RainX hand polishing kit (which includes plastic sealer). Lenses now much better, no longer planning to buy Depo E36 replacement headlights on eBay. Next up is polishing inside of the pitted E46 headlight lens.
Replaced ball joints in E36 front control arms using hydraulic press at rental lift garage. Was very educational but ultimately not worth the time vs. buying new control arms. New would have been $202 each side vs. $39 each side for new control arm ball joints, plus garage rental time to press the ball joints.
Unplugged heater valve on E36 because it was repeatedly blowing a 5A fuse, same fuse that also powers OBC/clock, EWS, and HVAC controls. So without this fuse, car won't start and heater and A/C won't run. With valve unplugged, it circulates hot water to the heater core all the time, so once car warms up, my toes are toasty. Have a used E36 heater valve coming from eBay.

You always were the bargain master. I do wonder which wheels these are. I didn't realize that the standard X5 wheels were only 18"... I thought they were all 19's or higher. :dunno

Standard is 18", M-Sport is 19" standard or 20" optional.

New trunk latch, one of the license plate bulbs was out due to massive amounts of corrosion. Tried to get the glue to release on the factory handle cover by baking it for a bit, didn't work. I have the same issue for my passenger side license plate light holder. Just curious - did you try to remove the rust either manually or via a dremel tool?

Check Tischer (getbmwparts.com), they package up all the little parts into a kit for a price better than you can assemble yourself. And they include everything down to the valve stem and cap, the wingnut on the tire hold down, etc.

I installed my H7 WeissLicht Illustro LED bulbs today. I will use them as flash to pass, but Derek asked me to take pics of them as DRLs, so I busted out my coding software to turn on DRLs for these pics:

I was trying to fix the problem I was having with the car thinking the key was in the ignition. Turned out to be a fuse (Doh!), but I'd noted sometimes there's a perceptible delay before the starter cranks in P3, and have seen that mentioned a sign the switch is going. I'd started to have symptoms similar to yours, but not always started on the 2nd or 3rd try. Out of the blue.

No, did it by hand on Colin's OB car. I have read complaints about that too. I think the trick is not to let is sit too long.

I recommend replacing the ignition switch, salmon relay, fuel pump relay, and main relay.
Last year, mine wouldn't start when the temps were in the single digits. It would take two or three tries before it cranked over. After replacing these items at my friend's recommendation, the issue went away.

Accomplished a few tasks on red 02 this AM. Finally installed drivers door window. All windows in the car.

Re-upholstered one of the sections on the drivers seat that was destroyed. Installed new straps on bottom cushion and installed a bunch of new hog rings. Installed brackets and sliders, installed them in car, cleaned and conditioned the seats.

Started cleaning M3 upper oil pan in preparation for modifying it to fit the Massive lower oil pan conversion for S14 in a 2002.

Made a new metal faceplate for the center console that will house the headunit and three gauges. Same setup I had before - except I made that one from wood and it wasn't holding up very well.

Did not, paid a local BMW tech to do it on the side. I think the oil pan gasket would have taken me a whole day. I'm just glad to get that one taken care of.

Boy, is that ever an understatement. You could hire an entire army of babysitters and it would still be cheaper than a plumber.

I got a couple of quotes early this fall and it was the most ridiculous quote I've ever seen - for anything. It was so expensive, I could have literally flown a buddy in and paid him a day rate for two travel days, a work day, and the plane tickets - and it would have been cheaper. It was all stupid little stuff, too. Total insanity. Thanks, I'll pay myself the $2500 and spend a day doing those four small projects.

Mine was a passenger side issue as well, replaced the whole handle after I tried to clean up the corrosion. It was around $100 at the dealer after tax.

I know I'm not the only one to wonder why there isn't a red 02 thread in the "Projects" section?!?! I've seen pics of your progress but the full story of how it started as a mere cosmetic touch up, then what you've done so far, and continue to do, on this car is very damn impressive. Humor us, or at least me, put it all in one spot for me/us to ogle & be amazed. That is, set up this own dedicated "Projects" page in your spare time, lol.

I think I have spent the last 6 months (not really) on the paint correction for my black & nb ZHP.
Harbor Freight DA pads are great, but the orange cutting pads don't last.
Griot's orange cutting pads are very durable, but don't have quite the cut of the HF orange.
I have been using Clay Magic clay, 3M Trizact 3k wet sand disc, Megs Ultimate Compound (orange pad), Megs M105 (blue pad), and Megs Paint Protect.
Switched to Griot's AIO One-Step Sealant as I have heard good things.

That car will get a build thread soon.
Some very cool stuff in the pipeline for that car.

My Steptronic is sleeping under cover in the garage.

No kidding. Mine looks way better than that because at least the rubber gasket at the top is still all intact, but that rubber is still very cracked and the black plastic has definitely turned gray in a couple of places. Plastic just doesn't handle the long-term sun exposure very well.

According to BMW Atlanta, $71.58 is retail... It looks like FCP Euro is $59 with free shipping, but $10 more isn't bad at all for instant gratification and local convenience/support.

Definitely putting this on my to-do list. It's part 51-71-8-232-894 for coupe/vert and 51-71-8-208-483 for sedan.

Yeah, but FCP Euro has a lifetime warranty on all parts they sell. I'd rather save the $10 and wait a few days for a cowl I know I'm going to have to replace in a couple of years.

Yep all parts bought from the dealer have a two year unlimited mileage warranty... if the dealer installs the part and it fails, they cover the labor too... one of the only advantages of dealer service...

We had the self level control module replaced by the dealer on our e53 a few years back. with coding and programing, it was close to $1000.00. When the part failed a year later, it didn't cost us a cent to get it replaced and coded

I took it on the Natchez Trace Highway for the first time today, which is very windy and hilly, and loved every second of it! I also found out that my ZHP was born on my brother's 25th birthday, kinda cool.

Put about 500 ml of engine oil in the car. I seem to be leaking/burning about a quart every 6000 KMs. While I was doing this, I see mayo build-up since it has turned pretty cold here and my drive to work is about 5-6 kms each way. There was no mayo in the summer months.

the theory is that you're losing oil due to poorly-sealing piston rings. introducing more vacuum to the crankcase allows the rings to seal better, thus less oil consumption... which means less in the catch can.

i was using 1L per 3000KMs before i implemented the catch can/PCV setup, now i use almost zero.

Beat me to it, Guy has those pads and likes them. Between reading his review on them here (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?15323-Hawk-High-Performance-Street-5-0-Brake-Pads) and them being on sale on TireRack, I went for it.

I'll let you know how the Hawk pads are with the BMW Performance rotors, Daniel, when I bed them properly and get some miles on them.

I drive 30-32k miles a year. How much does the 135i get driven? 2 months would not be a fair estimate in my case. I'm worried about having to do it every week, because I WILL forget and I am most definitely very lazy. The less I have to do the better.
