Found a silbergrau metallic door moulding. It's still attached to the door. Now if I can only convince the seller to just sell me the moulding...I think he'll be willing to part it out.

Changed both of the air filters on Dad's E39 M5 the other day. I hoped to see an mpg increase, but it actually went down, LOL. Stupid heavy right foot..
The new Mann filters are made in Mexico, and the old were ones were from Germany.. :shifty
This is why I buy from Mahle these days. Granted my last Mahle filter was made in France... But it looked identical to the German one in all aspects. And at least it's still European.

The new Mexican made Mann filter is surprisingly good quality. It is identical to the OEM German MANN filter. I reckon I will change the filters out every other oil change (every 15k).. I also cleaned both MAF's while I was there.

So I bought a couple of things last weekend and the package arrived yesterday while no one was home. As I was playing in snow flurries north of Philly today, Preston retrieved my package from the post office. Enclosed were some used items for an e46 330:
1. BMW Performance intake
2. Dinan throttle body
3. Stett upper & lower boots
Unfortunately 3 of the 4 tabs on the intake snorkel broke in transit, the seller is going to make compensation for the damage, I'll try to figure out a way to piece it back together by gluing it, somehow. The boots will go on one of the cars, I like them, they're pretty nice. The TB, I don't know what I'm going to do with that yet.
Originally had planned to install the TB on my sparkling graphite coupe and get a tune. But after Preston installed the same TB on his car and got the tune, it's a pretty nice performance bump. I made a deal with my 2nd son, Brett, straight A's for end of the year grades along with a certain dollar figure and he can buy my coupe. We received his midterm grades this week, he has 6-A's and 1-B, he's working 2 part time jobs, plus playing travel and varsity soccer, he's a very busy guy and I think he's going to meet my challenge on both fronts. And I couldn't be happier for him, I'll absolutely cover my side of the bet but as a brand new driver he doesn't need the extra power that a TB and tune deliver. So I'm going to hold off on installing the TB for now, just store it in the garage. I might install it on the wife's car instead or might decide to sell it, I don't know right now. If I should choose to sell it, I'll list it on the private side of our forum first.

I hear you John. And what is it with you tennis nuts? When I told GiGi I might not install it on my car due to Brett likely succeeding in being able to buy it, she immediately said she'd take it, and she doesn't even know what it is or what it does. Her car has one of the worst 4K stumbles I've seen, it needs a tune so if I'm going to tune it anyway I might toss the TB in there as well. The part that has me concerned is I'm thinking you need an exhaust better than the OEM to get the most from your tune because the stock resonators are so restrictive. So I'll drop my 15th hint here, Derek's HKS catback would be perfect for my wife's convertible, not too loud but flows so much better than stock.

I did, nabbed one for a steal ($350) and my son bought it from me, then found another one that was a decent price ($450) and grabbed it too since these things so rarely hit the market. If I should find another one, I'll try to grab it. Typically the used Dinan TBs are about $500 (think thats what 330i got for his) so if I see one for that or less it'll come over here to roost for the family.

Found out a few things... You don't need to pull the bumper trim strips. DIY video after watching 3 times said he did that because he was prepping it for paint. I'll gather a pic, but found a fog light housing buried in the plastic behind it (drivers side) Found the passenger front section of the fender liner destroyed. Also found that the slots that align on that side to the white plastic clip... well it's screwed with wood screws from white clip to bumper.
Notice it missing in this pic:
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb133/00h2itr/1A2704F6-D95F-43AA-98C1-258D97D65997-3279-0000012124E94AEF_zps007c4b1c.jpg
Why did I pull the bumper in the first place with the current starting issue?
Black kidneys are in, bottom grill is grey in color. Also, new yellow fogs are in and going in this weekend.
http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb133/00h2itr/EB96D2A1-5653-48ED-9405-BFF8E8BFFE3A-3279-0000011B955C14C4_zps655d44b8.jpg

I can see how a warm summer day would be better for this. But there is a lot of clips, and having worked on the kidneys, I broke a couple. I didn't want to go down that route again. Kidneys were done when it was ~30 degree's out. Tonight it was in the upper 60's They did seem more flexible.

03-20-2013, 06:50 PM
I swear i have posted this before but i could not find it. But it is somewhere on the site. You just push in with consitstant but firm pressure on the edges, then work inside. It will pop back towards the engine. Then you move to one side, bend, and pull out. I did it three times with the e46. I know i wrote it up multiple times......i just can not find it. Much easier in summer. But i did it in fall too.

It's actually pretty easy. There are 2 (3?) torx bolts that need to be removed from underneath the door panel plastic piece.
Removing the door panel is the worst part imho.
+1 Pretty easy. and it's 3 torx, on each corner of the plate.

I finally fixed my leaky PS. The culprit was a dumb hose clamp holding the hose from the reservoir to the pump. Unfortunately, it's been leaking for so long, the underneath of my car is n-a-s-t-y!
I also received the black crome tail pipe tips from John. They didn't fit, but with a little modification we got them installed.

Just so you know, road crap gets stuck between them so make sure to take a rag and pull the rocks out every once in a while. Also, penetrating oil is the greatest cleaner for those things I've found because of the material they are made from doesn't really like other cleaners/detailing products.

Replaced CSB and guibo. Separating and reconnecting the driveshaft is a PITA with a regular combo wrench! Would have helped a lot to have an 18mm ratcheting box wrench. This is the first time I've replaced something twice on the ZHP, other than oil, filters, and foglight trim rings. Guibo was replaced ~30,000 miles ago, but it was bolted up wrong so maybe that's why it failed early.
The driveshaft was not exactly as I'd expected. Based on the Pelican DIY I thought the u-join would be behind the CSB and the clamp holding the two parts together would look like this:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/techarticles/E36-Guibo/pic1.jpg
http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/techarticles/E36-Guibo/pic5.jpg
But no, on my car the U-join was in front of the CSB and instead of an external clamp calling for a pipe wrench there was an 18mm bolt head hiding inside the universal joint. Maybe it's something specific to the 6-speed. Or maybe in the past somebody put my driveshaft together backwards! After all, shouldn't the U-joint be after the CSB to allow for rear suspension movement? On the other hand, assuming rear subframe bushings and diff bushings are in good shape, the rear won't move around much relative to the CSB, while the transmission and motor might move around under hard cornering with stock mounts. So maybe the U-joint should be in front of the CSB. Or I'm looking at the DIY photos backwards....
This guy's E46 DIY video shows the U-join in front of the CSB, like mine. Maybe I took mine apart the wrong way? .
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6wlJplxMdg
Edit2: Ah I see now this E46 Fanatics thread explains that the 5-speed driveshafts have the locking collar as shown in that guy's YouTube video, but the 6-speed driveshafts have the bolt inside the U-joint. Thread: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=892866
Photo that looks like my driveshaft (and yes my CSB was completely separated like in that photo:
http://www.osoknrid.com/pics/IMG_0244_resize.JPG
Also my CSB was not held in by a circlip. Wondering if some previous mechanic forgot to replace it or the ZHP driveshaft simply doesn't need one.

I check tire pressures religiously and today confirmed that I have a slow leak in the right-rear tire. It's losing about 2-3 psi on 60 mile trips and ~10 psi over a few weeks. I visually inspected the tire and I didn't notice anything. Guess it's to the shop for a patch repair...

If you have 18" 135s, check inner rim for a small crack. Can put soapy water in a spray bottle and spray it on the tire and inner lip, look for bubbles. That's how we found a crack leaking air from one of my rear OEM wheels. Recently saw crack on inner lip of a front OEM wheel, but tire holds presure okay. Today I had Costco dismount the tire. Gonna try drilling a hole at the end of the crack and sealing it with epoxy. If that doesn't work, will get it welded like I did with the crack in the rear wheel.

If you don't find any cracks in the rim, or debris in the tire, then I'd guess Shrader (sp) valve. The valve has an o-ring on it that gets old, brittle and shrinks.

Thanks, Dane! Do you (or anyone else on here) know if the ZHP 6-speed requires the driveshaft centering sleeve (part #26117526611) on the front of the driveshaft? I ordered one from Pelican but it's special order so hasn't arrived yet. Figured I'd reuse the old one, but did not see one in there and not quite sure where it goes. Here's a photo from the BavAuto web site:
http://www.bavauto.com//assets/product_images/2/26117526611.jpg
And here's the RealOEM diagram-- asking about part #1:

It's still driving me bonkers to think some E46 have the driveshfat U-joint in front of the CSB and others have it behind the CSB. It just.... doesn't.... make... sense! Wondering if part of my driveshaft is somehow installed backwards.
Excellent work.

I wish I had a heated garage :begging
It was something like 43 degrees out, so not too too bad. Still f'ing cold though. And my trunk is probably in worse shape than yours is. I live near a grade school, and one morning some kids thought it would be funny to draw a wang and balls on the trunk of my car. Now I have scratches in a very embarrassing shape on my trunk lid. :shift

Yeah, I knew this was gonna take a while. I probably could have finished a bit sooner if I had used a rotary to compound. But I stuck to the orbital only because my paint wasn't too bad. Plus I always hesitate taking too much clear off. I feel like the clear gets softer and easier to scratch the deeper you go.
Oh, and good detailed pics to follow. I roped a buddy of mine into helping me complete the rest of the car on Friday. He owes me big time after I spent 6 hours with him detailing his new Cobalt SS.

Mainly minor things. They didn't do a few spots on my front bumper that I thought they would when they airbrushed. I also thought they were going to touch up the scratches on the center console/cupholders that they did not. I was also hoping they would detail the interior after it was done. Just gave me a little more work to do. I will pick up some suede cleaner this week to take care of a few spots. I can also take the cupholders out and repaint them myself.
On a positive note, they did a great job with some scratches from the PO's 3 year old on the doors and the rock chips on the hood look substantially better. Also nice to have a mirror cover on the passenger side again. I am just a little over meticulous and notice every little thing. I even made a page long list for them of things to look at when I dropped the car off. I don't think anyone looked at it. :rofl :( For having the car almost 2 weeks I guess I expected more.

Entire new console (console itself, cupholders, coin thingy) is < $100 at ebmwparts and will probably make a huge difference to a potential buyer if yours is damaged.
Mind sharing the costs ?

Yeah. I know they aren't expensive. The console isn't damaged, the coating is just scratched. It's basically just a rubberized coating anyway. I'll probably play around with a few ideas to see how they turn out.

Does that include the spot below the radio, but above the DSC button piece? Mine is pretty beat up there, and it's a rubberized coating I would love replaced.

I plastidipped mine. It had one air bubbled, that in the last two years popped and is now starting to peel. May just buy a black cup holder insert. The rest of the console I've painted, duplicolor rattle can, and it's held up excellently.
Acetone will smooth out the plastidip and allow you to blend it a bit.... I've done this to touch up my wheels

Does that include the spot below the radio, but above the DSC button piece? Mine is pretty beat up there, and it's a rubberized coating I would love replaced.
Here you go :)
Console - 51168218305 - $50.78
Cupholders - 51168217953 - $29.90
Oddments/coin tray - 51168217957 - $27.47
Radio mounting bracket - 51168268892 - $74.87
Prices are from ebmwparts. All these parts are in black - run the numbers on RealOEM to get the other colors in the parts lists.
The last part is the bracket you're talking about. A little ridiculous. A lot of people have been refinishing them with plastidip - might be something to consider if you don't want to blow $75 on this. Other option is to call your local recycler and see if they have them! They're also on classifieds/eBay all the time because of people installing navi - it requires a different bracket.

Took the car to Affordable Tire and Brake, Seattle, WA and they repaired my tire for free. Awesome dudes. They unmounted, applied the liner, replaced the stem, pumped it back to operating pressure, and remounted it for me.
Bought my silver gray metallic side moulding, FINALLY. Should arrive by Friday.
Looks like it has a minor scuff mark. The scuff mark looks black in the picture, so I am hoping it can be fixed with some polishing compound.

I washed mine yesterday for the first time in 3+ weeks. Minus winter time with salt.. it was probably the dirtiest I've let it get. Mud everywhere, brake dust and other stuff all over my wheels and such. I had to use degreaser to get it all off.
My pup helped too. He kept drinking out of the soap/water bucket & my dirty brake dust water bucket.. as well as chasing sudds down the driveway. He likes to bite at the streams of water coming out of the hose too. Needless to say.. he was a bit wet when we were done.

Boy oh boy...not a good day for the ZHP at all.
- 8 codes. Misfire on all cylinders, P0171, P0174
- Very rough idle
- Knocking noise underneath the car when clutch is in neutral
I ordered a Dorman DISA and new intake boots...hoping this will take care of the problem. The knocking noise seems to come directly from the transmission.
Symptoms:
- Car in neutral, foot off the clutch
- Random knocking noise
- Foot on clutch, noise goes away
- Much more prominent with my engine misfiring
It must be some bearing of somesort...maybe input shaft or throwout bearing. I haven't figured it out yet.

Ouch, no good. My throw out bearing/input shaft has made a very quiet clatter in neutral with my foot off the clutch since I have owned it. Never progressed or got louder, so I never worried about it. But yours might have let go!

21 is the Hydraulic tensioner assembly. You can replace only the idler on it for around $40.
If you have the belt off, turn the idler and listen for any noise. Mine were loose and noisy.
Does the noise change with RPM at all? Or even go away? Mine went away completely after about 5 minutes of driving before replacing.

The noise from the neutral almost sounds like a flywheel issue. But most likely not.
I know a Lightweight Flywheel makes noises when in neutral, but when the clutch is in it goes away

Now that you mention it...I do have a good amount of chatter when moving into first gear, especially in the mornings. It's very possible that my flywheel is worn out, and with DMFs I have heard they tend to get funny when they wear. I'm at about 127k on the original clutch, after all. Could be that I need a new one in the future. I'm just hoping it holds out 'til I start working!

Extra cooling to the brakes and/or intercoolers. Foglights block a good amount of potential airflow to those parts.

Funny thing you say that, because my "ducts" to my brakes are actually throttled off in the Z4M. I have huge inlets (as you can see in my sig) but there is a plastic piece behind there that throttles at least 75% of the opening.
I also have ducts to the brakes on the 128i right next to the fog lights

So found out today that the negative battery wire in my trunk is going bad. I had wiggle it a bit to get my car to start today. Luckily it's not ridiculously expensive like I expected. I found it for $33 shipped online.
Is it bad that I just assume that when something breaks that I'm in for a $100+ repair??

That's potentially very dangerous... I would highly recommend you replace and secure that before you drive around. You shouldn't be able to wiggle it after you clamp it down. There's 300+ amps going through there, so small extra resistances can dramatically escalate things. If a battery gets disconnected while you are driving, you're in for a disaster - it can ruin your computer and electronics.

While looking at my rear diff leak (seems to just be the rear cover, nothing spun anywhere, no leaks on input/output shafts from what I can see), found the following additional issues...
Passenger side rear tire showing belts on the inside, sidewall has more than 1/2 of the writing on it rubbed off! (alignment done less than 5k ago) RTAB's?
Valve cover gasket leaking again
All of this in addition to the tensioner idler making crazy noise at idle that I posted yesterday; WHERE IS THE NEAREST KIA DEALERSHIP?!
I kid, but damn, can I please get a maintenance break?! I just did the clutch back in January, now this...

I'm ashamed with myself for this but I need to share.
I have not been checking my oil levels regularly, and as a mechanicaly inclined person who studied it in college, I should know better. My low oil level light came on a couple days ago for a few seconds going around a tight corner and shortly there after went off. I stopped on the way to work today at Auto Zone to check the oil and top off. I pulled the dipstick out and.....it didn't even read on the stick :facepalm.....fml. I went in a bought two quarts of Mobile One 0-40W Full synthetic, and went out and put both in. Checked the dipstick again.....oh dear jesus :eyetwitch still wasn't reading on the dipstick......so I went back in and bought two more quarts. Went back out and put both in, and checked the dip stick and FINALLY back to normal levels........That means my engine only had 3 quarts of oil left....I'm so lucky I didn't have any major issues arise from this. I can not believe I didn't check the oil, and let it get so bad. I treated my girl like crap, and she deserves better. She felt a lot better after making the oil level right. I didn't realise how bad it had gotten. I can assure myself and everyone else that this will not happen again. From now on everytime I get gas the oil levels will be checked. Rain, shine, sleet, and snow no matter what.

That's what I thought too, and is why I wasn't as worried about it. I can't believe the light hadn't come on yet, but I shouldn't rely on a light to tell me when I need to add oil. It's my responibility to make sure everything is ok.

I haven't seen any leaks anywhere. Right now this vehicle is just my DD, granted I drive 76 miles oneway to work. I believe this is a consumption issue.

I never noticed any leaks on mine either but, the oil filter housing was leaking as well as my VCG. The OFHG leak was running down the block and back to the transmission and dripping from there. And I never even noticed the first drop. That combined with a bad oil level sensor, and plain stupidity, caused me to burn the rings out of my last engine.

I had no idea you were getting an exhaust too! I wonder if your ZHP exhaust would work on my car?
Oooo, so nice. Really like the brake handle.
Ryan,
The 330/325 exhaust is different than the 323/328 exhaust. The angle where the exhaust mounts to the outlet end of the exhaust manifold manifold is different between the '99/00 cars and '01/06. You could make it work but would need to cut off the front end of your exhaust connection and have it welded to the front end of Rob's. Most likely would have to cut the front few inches of Rob's exhaust off, mount it to you car, then have someone determine how much of your exhaust needs to be cut off & welded on to make it all fit correctly.
Sounds like some trouble to do this but the result will be worth it. On the 323, the stock exhaust is too restrictive with the stock single piping, the dual pipingZHP exhaust will free it up and move your back pressure convergence point backwards. Moving that convergence point backwards moves the first heat concentration point backwards. And moving the heat away from the engine helps createmore power, you should notice a difference. Good luck with it.

Mileage on tires and brand?
It's my RTAB on that side, after doing research and watching a few YouTube video's, I'm certain of it. The rear end has had this "loose" feeling for sometime, I should have known something bad would come of it...
But to answer you question, I don't think I have 15,000 on that tire, its a Michelin Pilot Super Sport. The other one on the rear had a blow out because it was low on air (nail). This tire has 3 nails on it, its been going low every now and then which is why I was inspecting it (for nails) which is when I saw the belts showing. I need a TPMS system!
I ordered AKG Black RTAB's, new exhaust gaskets (we used RTV when we installed my clutch because I forgot to order them) and a new steering coupler (been on my list for awhile)...
The seeping VCG and squeeky tensioner (not loud today at all, loud yesterday as seen in the video I posted) will have to wait a little longer. I also still have an airbag light on, ugh. Hope the tire will hold out until I can get these parts in and installed, luckily I'll be able to claim the tire as a road-hazard and get one for $35 shipped...

I've been like that with the MINI, not as bad but still. No worries.
At that point i'd say its turned into a consumption issue. My MINI burns oil because I was an ass not checking it regularly.

Replaced my driver's window regulator for the 2nd time. I got a free replacement under Dorman's lifetime warranty, and I reinforced it with zip ties this time to avoid redoing the job a 3rd time. I also found out that a spring on the door lock mechanism was loose in the door, so I fixed that too. Working windows, and no more rattling when closing the door. Double win! I'm gonna take apart my passenger door tomorrow and do the zip-tie mod on its regulator.
PS: Dorman themselves have non-existent customer service. However, Amazon was extremely quick to issue an advance replacement with next-day shipping for the sum of $0.00. Just gotta ship back the old one. Super impressed with this.

Replaced DISA with Dorman DISA. The Dorman is identical to OE. I can't tell the difference at all.
This was my old DISA:
http://i.imgur.com/uPxuAPHl.jpg
Notice that the pin is gone. It was loose and could come right out with ease when I got the DISA out.
Don't worry about the pin falling into the intake if your DISA is broken. It can't happen. It sits flush with the back of the manifold. The flap can't get sucked in, either. The pin will hold it in.
Misfiring is all gone now. Much, much smoother idle, and the 4100 RPM dip is either gone or not noticeable. I'm going to do the intake boots and clean the ICV as soon as those come in. Lower intake boot has a crack at the elbow of the ICV, which explains the lean condition.

So after you left, drilled out the stripped out bolt on Preston's AFE CAI cover, broke off a bit in there which stymied progress momentarily, then cut a slot in the bolt head, pounded a regular screwdriver in there tightly and was able to get it out. Followed that up with fixing the rear bumper on my wife's car, someone hit her car today and popped the corner of the bumper out of its retaining clip. Then messed with her positive battery connection under the hood to make that more aesthetically pleasing. Preston arrived home from college and was hell bent about replacing the lower grille on the front, Jon Estrella had given him an extra lower grille and he painted it last time he was home. Learned the hard way that the lower grille for a coupe is different than the sedan one that Jon had given him. A quickie paint job on his original faded lower grille for the coupe and then reinstalled everything. Also, on a coupe the front bumper does have to come out to replace this lower grille, tried David's "push hard" method and got the lower grille free but there was no way to snake it out of there. And the one thing I wanted to get done today, install new ceramic pads on the X5, well the pads are sitting next to me on the counter, there's always tomorrow.
And the main garage door opener decided to crap itself today. I messed with it for almost an hour, baffled and tired so will look at it again tomorrow.
Biggest news today, initiated the process to get us some more ZHPMafia.com stickers. I found one sticker a couple of weeks ago, asked Marcus & Dane if I could reproduce it for the upcoming May reunion. So the plan is to get one of each color (brushed aluminum, black, white, red) for a QA check by Family leadership. Once approved, I'm ordering 100 of each color, so 50 pair of each. It's $50 per 100, so they will be available for $1.00 a pair at the meet. Reunion attendees get first preference, if any stickers remain after the meet then I'll put them up here on the site for others to procure.

Yes, bravo on getting all that done!
Ya, the car runs so well now especially with the new exhaust.
Reported earlier on guibo and CSB. Forgot to mention the other work.
Last week, bled the brakes and lubricated Bimmerworld guide pins, which were almost seized with dried up (or missing) grease. Waited too long on that maintenance.
Put one push pin and 3 screws into rear bumper cover to hold it snug to rear bumper. Been rattling around on left side since before I bought the car, but it moves no more. Had to remove water deflector and parts of rear wheelwell liners to see how it attaches. In the process I finally found the charcoal canister, which was bigger than I expected.
Glued right mirror cover. Saw ding 2 weeks ago, tried to pop it off and broke the interior clips. Removed glass and glued it down with 3 dabs of hot melt glue. (Now, who dinged my mirror cover?)
Drilled and filled rim crack with 5-minute epoxy. Costco dismounted tire for free but wouldn't remount because tire starting to cord on inside edge. Today paid another tire shop to mount it backwards so I can wear the other edge.
Now just need 2 new front tires. Considering Bridgestone RE-760 (for the 3rd time), RE-11, Pilot SuperSport, and even Michelin PS all-seasons. Was reading the summer tire thread.

I have had some good (internet) friends in Belguim and Germany procure some EU only parts/wire harnesses for the X5
I am modifying the OEM BMW x5 trailer hitch so that the receiver points straight down instead of out the back (horizontal with the ground) so that I do not have to cut a 12" x 8" hole in the diffuser/bumper (one piece) and I will be more inclined to go ahead and get a CF diffuser.
this is what BMW wants me to do to the bumper

This is my progress (I got the idea from my BMW/Westfalia E46 M3 hitch system that hides completely behind the bumper and mounts to the "frame" rails instead of the thin body panel that is the spare tire well)

Ryan,
The 330/325 exhaust is different than the 323/328 exhaust.
Thanks for all the info, Bruce. Seems like work, and I'm nervous about cutting my end of the exhaust, but it would set me up for aftermarket 330 exhausts in the future. Def going to have to talk with Kyle about this.
